This is undoubtably one of if not THE BEST barbecue I have ever had in all my years. I went here on a whim during the (beryl) storm. They were one of the only places in the area serving hot food and Im glad I did because driving by you probably wouldn't notice its small sign.., I was mind blown. The meat was so flavorful gigantic and succulent! I had the coleslaw and green beans for my sides. They both were perfect && I'm not a fan of canned geeen beans but these were sooo well seasoned it made no difference!! . This blows papas barbecue out of the water. Took food to go. The ribs were delicious. Also had the jalapeño sausage. Usually jalapeño sausage has cheese and this one did not and yet it was still super moist. I really liked the barbecues sauce because it wasn't sweet and was just flavorful. We did not try the sides but they were not that entertaining looking. They were super nice serving us too! I have been going to this restaurant for over 20 years. It's an amazing family owned business with great food good service and lots of friendly faces. When you first walk in, you can recognize it's not a big place. But you can also see how many of the tables are full at lunchtime and dinner time. This is a staple for the city of Bellaire. they have catered many events for me as well. Absolutely would highly recommend. The atmosphere is amazing as well. read more

I've been living near Bellaire, TX for around 2 years now and I pass the this bbq spot pretty often. I've always thought about trying but never did until around a month ago. Way better than I ever expected! I recently visited for the second time and I ordered the Fancy Stuffed Potato. Everything from the potato and ingredients within the potato were very succulent! The beef was cooked well and seasoned perfectly. I also ordered the green beans and peach cobbler on the side. The peach cobbler was good despite what I initially assumed. The times that I have been to this bbq spot it's always pretty empty, but I've only gone during the late evening, so I'm not sure of the traffic they may get earlier in the day. I've been passing by this place for about 5+ years now, and today I was driving past it during lunch and thought I would pop in and give it a try. Being almost noon, I should have recognized there was no one in line at what is typically a very busy time for good BBQ joints. I got the two meat plate with two sides - brisket, jalapeno sausage, pinto beans, and slaw. The brisket had no flavor and was tough - no hint of smoke for a place with "hickory" in their name and no bark: it was as if someone got some brisket and popped it in an oven for a while. The jalapeno sausage was fairly low quality, and you could seriously go to the grocery store and buy any sausage link and cook up something better on your backyard grill. The beans had a good flavor but the slaw was fairly bland. I did get some BBQ sauce on the side and tried to use it to at least give some flavor to the meats but it had a strange taste, also - it seemed to be heavy with sage spices with a little bit of oregano. There are way too many good to outstanding - and even "okay" tasting - BBQ places in the Houston area. I would give this place a pass and go somewhere else. read more

The sausage had no flavor at all. The brisket had hard, dry pieces. BBQ sauce covering it all was terrible. Green beans and pinto beans tasted like they were from a can. I felt sick the rest of the day after eating there. I'm sure it was the excessive salt and/or MSGs. Mario has been cooking excellent BBQ for the Bellaire neighborhood for decades. His smoking technique is amazing and his homemade BBQ sauce is to die for. Try the ribs, the beans and the sausage. I was driving down Rice Ave and could not help smelling the smoke from this place. I was hungry and happened to be craving BBQ at that exact moment so I thought I'd give it a go. The portions were humongous! I got the ribs and brisket plate. The side selection is limited, but they do give you quite a bit. The ribs were 4/5 - very well cooked, moist, tender and smokey - loved them! The brisket was a different story - tough and dry...I feel like I could make better brisket - I'd give it 2/5. As some other reviewers have pointed out, the sauce was definitely a winner. I have to admit that I'm the type of person who seems to like sauces on the sweeter side, but I found this sauce very good even though it wasn't sweet at all. When they were owned by the Greek family many years ago, they had the best French fries in the world. Now they are not as greasy (they're probably more healthy) but are still good. In memory of their former Greek owners, they still serve gyros. The food is good and the portions are large. They have very good cole slaw, which is a necessity for me. The potato salad and baked potatoes are also great. I love the old-school decor but have a little problem with the blaring Fox News commentary on the television in the front dining room. Our family went again last night and took friends, and everyone loved it. My son is not a fan of eating out, but he's decided he loves the brisket sandwich and the stuffed chicken baked potato here. His friend loves barbecue and says this is the best he's ever had and will get his family to come here. Funny -- I saw a man get off the bus and come in for the first time. He said he asked the bus driver for the best barbeque place around, and the bus driver let him of here. I hadn't had the peach cobbler before, and I didn't think it has much taste, but the brisket baked potato was huge, as always, and very good. I noticed at least one writer gave it a low grade because the TV was on Fox. It was on Telemundo last night when we were there, but the remote control is on the table, so you can change it to whatever you want. We watched Battle Bots on the Discovery channel. Also, if you're looking for a fancy place, then you'll be disappointed. Even though I've brought two dozen people to eat here a couple of times, it's still really a "hole in the wall" type of place. Being from Texas, I know good BBQ. I had grown up in Bellaire until 1993 and never went here, but we did have a neighbor that raved over this place. It must have been good then. Ants on the trays should have been a cue, but I kept going. I got the three meat platter with two sides. The potato salad was the star of lunch. The cole slaw sometimes is extra soupy but this won I think they forgot to put the dressing on it it was so dry. Oh and speaking of dry, let's talk about the ribs, brisket, and sausage. Very suspicious to me since I have known these folks and eating at this restaurant for over 25 years. My husband picked up bbq for 20 yesterday. I haven't stepped foot in the place in 20 years, so I can't comment on decor/crowd/etc, but this is what I do know: The brisket was fork tender and juicy, plenty of good fat, but there was also lean pieces. The sauce was one of the best I've ever had. I don't like sweet, and there was nothing sweet about it, just very tasty, with vinegar and pepper undertones, on the slightly thick side, so it hangs onto your meat a little better. The pinto beans were a little creamy and had a nice tang to them, I suspect they put a dash of the sauce in them. Now the potato salad is my absolute favorite in town. Mostly potato, a dash of mustard and mayo with a little celery and pimento for color. We also had smoked turkey breast and sausage which were fine, but to me the brisket was the star of the show. It all came nicely packaged with the usual pickles onions an d jalapenos, along with a loaf of white and a loaf of wheat bread. All extremely reasonable, like $6 a person. We had been curious to trying this place for awhile now. Upon entering, it felt like the a/c was broken and the inside is very run down and has a dirty/dark feeling. There were no customers and al the workers were sitting hanging out at a table. The meat looked dried out and I probably would have left before ordering but my husband was already ordering. I got the sausage plate and had to choose my sides based on which one looked least nasty. The potato salad looked dry and like it had been sitting out for several days. The green beans looked and tasted like nothing more than canned. The cole slaw was sour.
