I went to this restaurant for dinner a couple of times after picking up my children of from preschool, and last night was the last time I will go here. The food is not very good, the employees are not very friendly, the beef is dried out and if you order a chopped beef sandwich they give you the very end of the brisket that's mostly burnt and barely edible. last nights visit with my kids is the last time I will be going here, though I think everyone makes mistakes and deserves another chance, but this restaurants food just isn't any good, the bread they use is grocery store bought Ms. Bairds buns, and Natures Own bread. The sauce is not any good and lastly the interior of the building is just run down and outdated. Been eating here since the late 1970's - when my Dad worked nearby & found. Always has been one of our family's favorites for lunch & they will even smoke a brisket for you. Their chopped beef basket is lean, beef is flavorful, great sauce AND the fries are just how I like them & they serve a basketful. I worked a quarter mile from this restaurant for 16 years, driving past it every morning and afternoon. None of my coworkers ever suggested eating here. I finally decided to go on my own. I should have known better. The brisket sandwich tasted like roast. The sauce, which it needed to make it somewhat BBQ, was more like gravy. The restaurant atmosphere (hot) and furniture (old vinyl) didn't make things any better. Being a native Texan who has eaten their share of BBQ, I can't remember ever walking away from a plate. Since I moved to Houston, I have been trying to find a really good BBQ restaurant. I keep trying different places and I end up with something good, but not amazing. Sadly, I thought this place was kinda the same as the others I tried. The sauce is ok and the toppings on the baked potato are sparse. So this is the best place in Houston to get a BBQ sandwich...This family owned restaurant has been dishing out some great food for mannnnny years, Their BBQ is amazing but what makes their sandwiches so good is their sauce, its divine...I only wish I had the recipe. The #1 thing to get is the chopped beef sandwich, make sure you get it with fries, they're extra greasy good. I personally get them to make me a special sandwich, a combination of chopped ham and sliced spicy sausage with extra sauce, yep that's how I do it. ohhh and those of you wanting something different, their BBQ baked potato is outta this world. read more

The last time was my last time. I have been going there for 20 years and the place has gone downhill. I invited my mom and hickory Pit embarrassed me. The ribs used to be big, they were tiny. The sauce is the worst anywhere. It's a shame they have no idea what they are serving anymore. read more

One of my favorite go to BBQ places in Houston. There are other places with better brisket or ribs, etc.. .but their BBQ potato with a mix of brisket and jalapeno sausage on top, fully loaded, with BBQ sauce on the top.... man its tough to beat. Adam Richman from Man vs Food would have a problem eating the whole thing in one sitting, so you will have leftovers for later, but it is awesome. Just keep driving.. it's not worth the stop. 3 meat combo was more like a kids meal for $11.35.. cheese fries were just shredded cheese that was placed in the microwave. The BBQ sauce was watery and there was no flavor in it at all. read more

We live down the street so I pop in time to time. Personally, my favorite BBQ is my dad's, but this is a favorable second. The gentleman/owner recognizes me so he is quite sociable and nice to me. The meat has always been enjoyable to me, but maybe I always hit the right days. You can't go wrong with a stuffed potato and the Western poboy is also quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, they had a fired a couple of years ago so the last time I was there a couple of amenities were missing: mainly the soda fountain. Consistently good BBQ served by family in a friendly atmosphere. I just saw a review which said they did not provide enough onions and pickles for the sandwich. No way. The onions and pickles are on the self serve bar and you can have all you want. Be wary of these negative reviews. I try to support family owned local businesses. read more

For reference, I have 2 smokers myself and really love good BBQ. Goode Co BBQ and Rudy's have been my Houston faves. Hickory Pit is solid 4 star... Best brisket potato I've ever had. Everyone in Bellaire talks about the potatoes here. The pork is also good on the potato for change of pace. The sauce- depends on your taste but works great on the potato and is fine for most else. Some folks love it. The ribs are solid in my opinion too and warrant 4 stars too. read more

Brisket is a bit dry but has an amazing after taste. Ask to get the ends of the brisket. The sauce is a great mustard/vinegar flavor that I usually don't like but love at this place. Tastes good with wheat thins. I was critical at first but then craved it later. read more

If you want good Bar-B-Q, stay away from Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q in Bellaire, TX (Lengthy review, but well worth reading) I had a horrifying experience at Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q on Memorial Day Weekend On Saturday, I took a brisket, 2 chickens and 2 packages of premium beef sausage links. The assistant manager attempted to charge me $1.00 per pound to smoke the meat. I reminded him of the advertised price of 65 cents per pound. His response was, "Oh yeah," and said he would correct it. I later discovered he still overcharged me by $2.08. I told him I would pay for my order in advance because I might send someone else to pick it up the next day. I paid $18.29 on my credit card, and was told my order would be ready at 1:00 p.m., Sunday. I arrived on Sunday to pick up my order, and the assistant manager was working the register. He was wearing a tattered glove that looked as though he's been wearing it all day. It was torn at the cuff and was in pretty bad condition. He went into the kitchen to pick up my meat in the same glove. He touched the meat and I asked him to please change his glove and his bare unwashed hand. He changed the glove, at my request, on his right hand and did not use a glove at all on his left hand. He returned to the front and said, "You had 1 sausage, right?" I told him "No, I had 2 packages." He repeated that question in the same manner, 2 additional times, and my response was the same. I showed him my grocery receipt, and directed him to the clipboard where my order was taken the day before. Finally, I asked, "You can't find my package of premium sausage?" He said it was not there. The owner stepped in and said, they probably accidentally mixed up the order. He offered the sausage he had behind the case to replace it. I asked if it was pork. He indicated it was. I showed him my receipt for the premium beef I purchased the day before for $10.98 per 2.5 lb. package. He said all sausage is pork, regardless of how it is advertised. I refused his sausage and asked him to reimburse me for my purchase that they lost or gave away. He agreed to do so. The assistant manager walked over to the register. I walked to the register also, thinking he was going to reimburse me. Instead, he started ringing up order, again. I reminded him I paid for the order the day before. The assistant manager said, "Oh yeah." I reminded him that he needed to reimburse me for the $10.98 for the lost meat as well as the price per pound I paid to have the 2.5 pound package smoked, which totaled $12.61. He tried to pay me $10.00, which I reminded him was not the correct amount. What happened next, I could not believe. He put the money back into the register and said, "You did not pay me yesterday." I couldn't believe what I was hearing. The assistant manager told me I did not pay him, and accused me of trying to take money from the business. There were other customers present, and I was deeply humiliated. I insisted if they did not return my money, I would call the police. The owner stepped in, went to the register, and threw thirteen dollars at me. I gave him the dollar back, and reminded him he owed me 61 cents more. I told the owner I didn't want a penny more or a penny less than what was owed me. He dropped the 61 cents in my hand, and told me he never wanted to see me, again. I have been a successful business woman, yet I was accused of being a thief. I left the store and returned home quite upset and feeling humiliated and victimized. When I returned home I relentlessly look for my receipt which was proof that I paid for the order the previous day. I found the receipt folded between my credit cards. After locating the receipt, I called the owner back. I gave him the transaction and invoice information, along with the date and time of the transaction. His response was, "It's okay." I told him it was not okay and he owed me an apology for humiliating me in his establishment in the presence of other customers. He apologized and said to come in someday, and he would buy me lunch. I told him, "Thanks, but no thanks." My last disappointment of the day was that the barbeque was horrible. The sausage link in my order was pork, not the beef link I purchase and delivered to Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q the day before. I attempted to break off the chicken leg, and discovered it was a bit bloody. Fearing salmonella poisoning, I would not eat it. Finally, the brisket was dried out. The meat tasted smoked, but not seasoned, at all. This was a complete disaster. My only recommendation is that, if you fell like eating Bar-B-Q, stay away from Hickory Pit Bar-B-Q. Remember, "Money goes where it's invited, and stays where it's treated well." I will NEVER do business with Hickory Pit Bar-B Q, and recommend you make the same decision. read more
