In town visiting family and we decided to stop here last night (5/18/26). Everyone is super nice. Must make up for the awful food/service. Order wings/fries...emphasized SEVERAL times please fry crispy. Received my food and wings were pink on the inside!!! I'm good don't want anything. Son-in-law ordered a sandwich and asked for no cheese...lo and behold had cheese on it. Then they forgot my grandson's apple juice. She kept walking by, then said they were out. We were a group of 4 ordering takeout and mostly explored HT's extensive appetizer choices. Something to definitely order again is the shrimp in a spicy sesame sauce with crispy broccoli and mushrooms. The small Tavern salad was a good size and the street corn side had a lot of flavor. Our nachos tray was huge, but toppings were mostly sauce and peppers. A bit of chili was hiding and saved it from being totally bland. Biggest disappointment: the chicken quesadillas were dry, underfilled, and cold. Mozzarella "wedges" turned out to be mozzarella "sticks" -- nothing special. And Finally, an order of fries was OVER salted, really a waste. We would go again because it's convenient and our order was complete and ready at the pickup time. Portions are generous and menu includes ingredients and seasonings if you're picky and want something left off. It wouldn't take much to bump my 3 stars up. read more

Service was very slow despite small number of diners and plenty of servers. Food was good but waitress disappeared for long stretches. We got only a customer copy of bill and had to ask for merchant copy to sign. Server didn't understand why we needed merchant copy. Duh. We visit this location every couple of months. We arrived about 6:45 on a Monday. We were completely forgotten watching people who were seated after us. The explanation was having to "restart the grill". I guess their burgers didn't need to be cooked? We had previously stopped going here for several years due to poor service. Looks like history will repeat itself. Pity really, it's close to home and the food is pretty good, but 1 hour 45 minutes for a hamburger is ridiculous. read more

1-9-2026 There were large parties not enough help to run the place. My waitress didn't have time to take my order so someone else got our drinks and took our food order so basicaly I never saw our waitress until she finally stopped and asked if we needed anything.We asked for ketchup but it literally took 10 minutes. We needed refills on our drinks. My wife had to get up and go get them. My steak was overcooked on the outside. We had not eat at this restaurant for quite a few years until about a month ago and it had improved greatly at that time. I commented to the GM that night that it had changed greatly but the last several times it has gone back to the old inefficient and poor service and food quality as before. If you can't give us service don't seat us. I'll go somewhere else. read more

Ok, when I go to hickory tavern i order the classic tavern burger. every. single. time. BUTT when i order my burger I ask for no cheese, and they put cheese on it every. single. time. honestly I don't know why they put cheese on it every single time but every single time I ask for no cheese and they still put cheese and it angers me because I hate cheese and I just they've never told me like "oh we can't make changes to orders" I tell them "hey Id like the classic Tavern burger but with NO cheese" and every single time without fail they bring it to me with cheese I don't know why because they agree to putting no cheese on it like when I tell them no cheese they're like "yeah that's no problem" but yet they still put cheese and it's a big problem because it ruins my mood and next time we go to Hickory Tavern they will be hearing about this. One thing I have noticed though is the patties themselves are super crumbly like they make all their burgers have two patties and the patties like fall apart super easily so maybe they just like put the cheese on there because they're like "is the customer gonna complain about having cheese on the burger or are they gonna complain about having a crumbly burger?" so maybe that's why, but maybe just don't sell crumbly burgers. read more

We have been several times and it has always been consistent. We usually sit at the same table at the edge of the bar area and ordered the same thing. We are that predictable! He gets the shrimp appetizer and the turkey melt for his entree. I get the pretzel bites appetizer and chicken fingers and fries for my main. It is always fresh, always hot, and we always have great service. I would not hesitate to stop in whether you want to watch a game, meet with friends, or get together with the family. This place doesn't disappoint. I have eaten at several Hickory Taverns through the years and this one has been the best by far. Keep up the good work! read more

Said we wouldn't go back after the bad quality of food and service last time but wanted to give it one more chance which was a mistake. Nothing changed, food is overpriced for the quality and waitress/manager wasn't nice. Here's a picture of the $9 cobbler....Definitely never going back again read more

Hickory Tavern is a cute bar and grill Atmosphere. Inside the Tavern was an A+. Service was fabulous, but the wings were not so good. Starting with the fact I asked for buffalo wings with a side of fries and the wings came plain and the fries were so over seasoned with salt that you couldn't eat them. The beer was cold but the food was just meh..... we will try this place again but order something different to see if it was just an off night . read more

I had a couple gift cards for hickory tavern b/c I used to really like going there. However my last few experiences have been so bad. My server was fine. She brought the bill. It was $32 but $39 was taken off the card. Seemed like I had been charged a 20% tip but when she dropped off the bill she mentioned that I wouldn't be able to tip on the gift card. When I pointed out what appeared to have happened, I was told I was making a big deal out of nothing. In the end it may have been an honest mistake but the way I was treated was not. No explanation, no apology, and when I sent an email no response. I always enjoy eating here, this place has been a staple for me since childhood. I get a cheeseburger with chips every-time and it never disappoints. The appetizers and honey croissants are also amazing ! Our server Casey was amazing and did such a wonderful job, he made sure we had everything we needed. read more

Just plain bad. Terrible pulled pork sandwic, dry and pure salt. Chicken wings also extremely salty. Sign of a terrible cook.

The service was excellent. The food was excellent. We happened to go on a day that they started using the revamped menu. This was my first time so I can't compare their selections to previous menu items, but the menu and the items I saw ... they all looked great! I had the garlic parmesan wings and they were perfectly cooked! They were seasoned very well with the flavoring ... not too overpowering at all. It was all good. I was so hungry that I didn't get a picture but I plan to revisit them when I'm back up that way! read more

Hickory Tavern used to be one of our favorite dinner spots before Covid. Last week, we were invited out with friends and landed back at your restaurant and our experience was wonderful! We returned a few days later on our own and again were very pleased! A great atmosphere for football, a true sports bar, experience with a cozy family style atmosphere. The food was delicious, as I had the cheesesteak sandwich and chili, both delicious. The only drawback is that they were not hot but lukewarm at best. The service was really good even though our waitress had a large number of tables. I'm not sure if this place will be a regular on our list, but this experience was a 2 star expierence but I will give it a three because of our waitress, Kendra. Worst experience we've ever gotten from there, waited forever on food but that wasn't the bad part, got cold wing served with no sauce at all on it...was just going to eat my tots but didn't have a drink and was waiting one one for 15 min after he asked if I needed one then waved him over to ask and waited even longer so didn't even end up eating because by the time I got a drink to eat with all the food was cold. Wings, although limited sauce choices, have been good sized, cooked well, and delicious in the past. However, tonight I ordered take out, 3 orders of 6 and some chicken tenders. Tenders were "good". Wings were by far the worst I've ever had. Must have been cooked a couple of hours ago, sooo dry. I ordered extra sauce, but didn't get any. I don't think there's any way it would have helped. They clearly don't know how to cook wings, or just don't care. If that's the best you can do, take them off the menu. read more

I will NEVER eat at a Hickory Tavern again. Nick, the manager at Hickory Tavern in Gastonia, has the worst social tack of anybody I have ever encountered. We had a party of 8 that planned to eat there tonight to only be told when we arrived that they could not seat or serve us. Yes they could not serve us!!!!! They could not seat us outside because someone had made reservations. OK, then we asked for seating inside. BUT NO, they already had reservations for 8 inside also. Is that all the seating they have. We were then told that they could seat us but we would have to be done in 45 minutes, OR we would have to wait over an hour and a half (after the other parties were finished) to serve us. Nick was not very tackfull in delivering this information and we were very insulted with his demeanor. This is not the first time that I have encounter Nick at this location. Over a year ago, he was also very rude when I had a complaint about my bill, which he told me that that was what it is and there was nothing that he could do about it. I hate this place and will never spend my money at this place... Nick needs some people training if he is going to be in a managers position of any kind working with the public. read more
