This should be a 1 1/2 stars because 2 is too generous. Lets start with the over all odor of this place....old stale beer, old stale wet mop and food spills onto the carpeted floor! I wanted to walk out right then and there but we were hungry so we stayed. We started with the BBQ chicken nachos. I am not a fan of these flavors together so I can't give my opinion. But hubby and daughter really liked them and they seemed to have a lot of toppings. For entrees we ordered, wings for the hubby, smothered chicken for me with extra mushrooms and the Buffalo chicken sandwich for our daughter. The wings and the chicken sandwich came out first and I told the family to dig in. Hubbies wings were odd and not in a good way. They don't fry their wings, they put them in a big open fire oven. So the result is a little rubbery in some places and very well cooked in others. Our daughters sandwich was ok-nothing special. When my dish finally came out it was covered in ONIONS NOT SHROOMS! and this was not our servers fault. And the onions were not fully cooked so they completely over powered the dish. We called the waitress over and had her take the dish back to the kitchen. She offered to have the kitchen refire a new dish but hubby was half way thought his wings and daughter was half way through her sandwich so by the time my dish was remade and brought out the family would be done. One of the managers came over to apologize for the mess up and offered to bring anything else and also said they were going to take the dish off the bill. Over all this place is a low quality sports bar....so I guess if you drink enough booze or beer the food here might taste good. We won't be back! read more

I am from Southern Pines but don't live here anymore. My mom was in the hospital and her nurse suggested we try Hickory Tavern for dinner on our break from the hospital. The service was wonderful and the food was amazing!! The manager, Anthony, happened to stop by our table to check on things and I casually mentioned my mom was in the hospital and it was our first time there. When I asked for the check the waitress said it was taken care of. The manager came over and said he hoped my mom felt better. I would have written a positive review regardless bc it was great but this was over and beyond! You don't find service and nice people like this very often! You won't be disappointed!! read more

First visit to any Hickory Tavern. Atmosphere was great with lots of nice TVs and a large animated crowd. Good selection of beers and friendly staff. The bee sting wings and chicken salad sandwich were both delicious. I felt like prices were high compared to Buffalo Wild Wings. Probably due to lack of local competition. Overall great place. Minus 1 star for prices. I will go back. read more

A big group of us came here last night for wings. It was super busy and high energy! Obviously Wednesdays are very popular and I can see why. The wings were AWESOME! I think I ate my weight in them. The managers were hustling to make sure everyone was happy. It's nice to see managers who actually care. Our server was very attentive to our needs, and very friendly. Whoever is in charge of this place obviously cares about the customer. You don't get that everywhere. This was a great experience for us, and we will be making it a weekly tradition from now on. I love coming here to eat and am here almost everyday. They have a very welcoming staff here that always makes you feel like you're at home. i've never had a bad experience here. I wish i could say the same for other restaurants in this area but Hickory Tavern always keeps me coming back. I recommend this restaurant to all of my friends and i can't wait to come back and eat again! read more

I am sadly disappointed by my last few visits here. This used to be one of our favorite places but now quality and service are both lacking. Our food orders have been wrong, incomplete or just below standards the past three times. Tonight our service was extremely slow and at times non existent. We did speak to a manager who did try to rectify the situation, and the discount was much appreciated .With a spouse in the restaurant industry, I try to be understanding that "things happen" despite best efforts. Liked the vibe but take out disaster. Medium rare tavern burger was well done and dry as the Sahara. Do it yourself salad became we will do it salad as what we ordered was not what we got - such as got black beans instead of avacado. No utensils. Really disappointing. read more

Unfortunately this place has gone downhill. Went for a quick salad for lunch with a friend and 2 hours later we left with extra bowl of chili that was brought by mistake and the manager insisted we take. As I waited in the indoor lobby for my friend to arrive, there were flies swarming around. First of all, let me say, if you're a sports nut...call Dorothy cos 'there's no place like home' here! A gazillion blaring, flat screened TV's and attractive waitresses in different team jerseys greet you, where you're seated and introduced to a remarkable selection of beers and some tasty noshings. I have to say, if you're a vegetarian, there are actually some selections to be found! First, they can 'vegetarianize' (I know, it's not an actual word, keep reading) their nachos by using beans as opposed to their chili, and that's pretty good. They also have build-your-own salads, a veggie burger and, of course, their pizza that you can make plain or throw some veggies on it (not great, but it's something!). As a pescetarian, I always choose their shrimp tacos as my main dish, which are really quite delectable and I've found their fish sandwich to be satisfactory. Their main concentration are their wings, which all the omnivores go nuts over (the 'Bee Sting' flavor is, quote, "Awesome" according to my brother and other people in the joint) My parents love this place and they are big fans, so that says something to their wings and nachos! Waitresses have always been helpful, courteous and accommodating, always a huge plus in my book! So, if you're a fan of the poultry slathered in a variety of sauces, beer and sports...head on down to the old Hickory Tavern! read more

My family and I have been here for one hour. Our order was a taken 40 mins. ago and we've yet to see our food. Our waitress said there is a problem in the kitchen. I visited Hickory Tavern Saturday, March 17, anticipating and wanting a corned beef dinner for St. Patty's Day, which they had on special. I was so disappointed in my meal. The portions were large but the meat was so tough I could not chew it. I told my server and she said that she'd heard the same complaint from others that day. She did not offer to replace it with anything else either. Wish I had just refused it and sent it back to the kitchen. I boxed it up, took it home, and cooked the meat until tender and finished my meal. Do not count on the food to be much good. It's a sports bar for drinking and watching the many TV screens. I won't be back for a meal, though. read more

Not far from the golf courses, so perfect place to unwind after a round. The Shrimp and Grits was phenomenal and all draft beer was on special for $3 which was a great deal. Our server was training a new server and they were very prompt and courteous. read more

This is our second time coming to Hickory Tavern and both times have been awesome. Our waitress was Kayela S today and she did a great job! She was very polite and attentive. We are also impressed at the manager who comes and checks on people to make sure the service and food is good. He also has refilled our drinks a few times now. I have been here several times and had a bad experience each time. The worst (and last) experience I had here was during the World Series 2013. As a Boston Red Sox fan, this was an exciting time. We arrived at Hickory Tavern around 11 pm and took a seat at the bar to order an app, a few beers and enjoy the game with other fans. There were a few people at the bar who arrived around the same time we did. There was a woman behind the bar who was already breaking down the bar an hour before they close....first sign we should have left. We asked to order an app and we were told the kitchen was also already broken down and staff was sent home. I have been in the service industry for 20 years as a server and bartender and NEVER worked at a place that "broke down" their bar and kitchen an hour before close. This is just bad business. The bartender was RUDE. We asked for beers and was told we could only have one round because she was ready to leave ( an hour before closing). We left and NEVER looked back. This restaurant has a reputation for bad service and treatment of locals and it lives up to and owns that reputation. The service is BAD, the food is frozen/reheated at best and it's overpriced for the quality. I would never recommend this place to anyone. We did, in all fairness, contact the management the next day. We received an apology and promise to look into the issue. Seems the manager left early that night so the employees thought they could do the same. Not really an excuse. We were offered a gift card to come back for more bad service and cheap food in exchange for ruining a World Series playoff game for a couple of Boston fans....yeah, no thanks. read more

Rudest hostesses ever. We were visiting the area for the weekend to host another local event, and found this place online because of the musician booked for tonite. We were a simple party of two. When we were "greeted," it was obvious the first hostess didn't want us there. She said the wait would be 25 minutes to an hour. We saw at least 5 tables leave, while our party and one other party continued to wait. Finally, at the 25 minute mark for us, the other table was seated. Then a larger group that showed up was seated within 5 minutes. Then 2 guys that just showed up were seated before us near the music by the first hostess, while the second hostess tried to take us all the way to the back of the dining room. We only went to the place for the live music. Our hostess lied to us by saying the guys were part of another party. We heard the entire exchange between them and the other hostess. Apparently, customer service is not important to this place. We left and will be taking our business elsewhere. We eat out 5-6x/week. Most places appreciate our business. read more

First visit was with girlfriends on a Sat morning in early Jan and we were treated like royalty with an upbeat waitress and awesome food. I had the health nut salad and loved it. So bizarre to put bananas on a salad - but just try it - it's magic. The other lady who got it felt the same - we wanted to lick our plates. Our waitress (Lilly) made us feel like we were her only table - so great! I was just here again the other night with my family and it was during an NFL playoff game. Different vibe but still fun. Had the same salad and while it tasted great - there were a few issues with it, so I talked with the manager and he graciously apologized, took ownership of the error and offered to comp it saying "I don't feel right about you paying for this ... this is not where I want our quality to be...." I did not let him comp it, but it was wonderful to hear his personal approach to addressing the issue - he took the plate back to the kitchen and said "this is exactly the kind of training I need for the team to improve" ... you can tell he takes a great deal of pride in the end product and customer satisfaction (for the record, the salad was still delish, it was just sloppy presentation that resulted in some things being included that shouldn't have been - no biggie for me, but I wanted him to know). Very impressed with the interaction with him. Also the waitress brought the kids meal to my son and then slipped me his dessert (an oreo single pack) on the sly so my son didn't see it and I could decide when to show it to him ... brilliant! Love it when the service team is mindful of common sense like that! We will be back again soon! read more

We had the most horrendous experience tonight here. The only reason I gave it a 1 star is because the server was so nice and apologetic. We took our family to celebrate our sons birthday. Gave our orders, and realized that it was hotter inside than outside. 90 outside, 100 degrees inside. Found out as we were getting our food that the air conditioner had been broken for two days. Felt so sorry for the cooks and servers. Impossible to enjoy our meals while perspiration was rolling down our faces. They should have closed down until they got the air fixed. Asked for a discount because of the miserable experience. Was refused. Our fault for not walking out. We were just hopeful that we could make this birthday special for our son, because he's always liked this place in the past. What a horrible, horrible dinner. Can't believe they would not give us a discount, or a military discount!! read more

Excellent menu with MANY choices.Side salad is great with several unique dressings. You must try the fish tacos-thank you-they are NOT fried. One problem... large dust bunnies kept falling from ceiling fan onto our table. We had to cover glasses with napkins. The waitress and hostess were nice & pretty(as I noticed about the whole staff), but messed up almost the whole order (maybe if they didn't go for looks in waitresses they'd have a few people that knew how to do the job better). I like this place. Very good value for the food they serve. Check their specials and you can really save. Great sports bar and good service. Nice place to bring your family or hang with your friends. This one has 40 TV's for your sporting pleasure. Negatives- Loud music in the evenings and they play a lot of Rap/Hip Hop, not really for the people who are in there, middle aged white guys. Often the will put on Ultimate Fighting and there are a lot of children in there eating with their families, again not appropriate. Lastly, not everyone loves basketball. Was there last week to watch the NHL playoffs and only 2 screens out of 40 were hockey. 2 for golf and 36 for basketball. While I like basketball, not everyone does. There were a lot of hockey fans huddled in the corner. Basketball, no one really cared. Any way, I love this place and the food is great! I take my family there a lot and we all enjoy ourselves very much. I recommend this place very much. read more
