$10 DELICIOUS Chimichanga (Al Pastor). Could be 3 meals.
    Joyce C.

This is so secret that it's been open 7 years, with new waterfront Condos across the street, right near the Roosevelt Island Bridge, with lots of commuters, runners & dog walkers going by every day; but they didn't pull up on Yelp. I mistakenly created a new Biz Profile for them. It's really a HIDDEN GEM, an NYC & "the best mexican food can be found in the back of a Mexican grocery" Experience. I'm excited for my new job nearby but also excited that my co-workers order from Hildago (& for their working partners & visitors) almost every week. Apparently the owners know them well. And WHY didn't I know about this place when visiting Noguchi Museum, Socrates Park or Rainey Park before!! The slim options nearby are the Jamaican Restaurant, CostCo food stand, & a fancy Coffee Shop. THE item that looks to be the Staff favorite is the Chimichanga with Oaxacan Cheese (you MUST specify what type of cheese or you'll end up with a bright yellow kind). I got mine with Al Pastor as the meat option and I think it's the best Al Pastor that I've ever had. The seasoned pork was delicious. (I had Al Pastor & Chicken Tacos previously & it was definitely much better than the Chicken) Back to the Chimichanga, from what I can tell, it's a griddled Burrito. Filled with rice, black beans, choice of meat and cheese. Every ingredient was so tasty. In a lot of burrito situations, there's always one ingredient that's lacking, but not here. Usually I don't understand carbs within carbs, but this changed my mind. It's topped with crema and guacamole (also tasty, but a bit salty) and served on top of lettuce and tomato. NOTE: this thing is about 5 pounds or more, maybe 8 pounds of food. You WILL have leftovers for only $10.99. Had a no sugar Tulsi (Holy Basil) Hot Tea and friend had a Papaya Shake (just okay, mixed with ice and I think coconut). A co-worker had a giant Veggie Cemita (sandwich on a round roll) and I saw string beans falling out of it. I want to try the flautas and sope sometime, and their soups. They young woman working at the counter told us that they have Lunch Specials also. Meat, rice, beans & soda for around $8.99. Seating is minimal, literally 3 small tables & 6 chairs in the front of the grocery. I can't wait for the weather to get nicer & take this to the park. Or a walk to Roosevelt Island, eat under the cherry trees. Go there! Don't worry about the lack of ambiance, the food and super friendly service will blow you away! Just keep this spot a secret though...

My boyfriend and I typically come here for tacos and gauc to bring to Rainy park for a picnic in the park. The food is SO good. St James is still May favorite Mexican deli but the tostadas, tacos and the GAUC and chips are VERY good!! Chill bodega vibe, not fancy but good food at low price

more onions than anything, also lots of jalapeños made it spicier then the green sauce..

my score 3.6 stars ordered: rice and beans, pico de gallo, chicken empanada with green sauce. rice and beans: needed just a bit more seasoning (it also had peas, carrots and corn in it, if y'all care to know). empanada: wasn't bad, pretty regular, not as good as the ones outside atlantic terminal brooklyn, also the green sauce if i'm not mistaken is store bought. it didn't taste like any i've had from mexican or latin america restaurants. the pico: was spicier than the green sauce lol, i poured off some of the juice on the beans and rice and it gave it some flavor. also there were way more onions than tomatoes. delivery was on time and the driver was very nice and friendly. i'll try again..

Al Pastor Tacos - very good

It is very rare to find clean, convenient Mexican grocery stores here in NYC (I'm from California where we had an abundance of Mexican food), so I was so excited to see this place opening last week. The woman behind the counter told me they were going to open a kitchen with a variety of Mexican foods (tortas, tacos, sopes, etc), so I had to go back today and check out their food. I had 4 Al Pastor tacos, which turned out to be very good but much bigger than I expected so I was stuffed. They were also very reasonably priced. To top it off, they have a case full of great-looking pan dulce (Mexican sweet breads/pastries).

It ended up being the best decision we made all night. Emily, our server, was nice, attentive, and took great care of us. The food was just as fresh and delicious as at the taco stand at the QNM. The purple corn tortillas were incredible, the chicken was hot, juicy, and flavorful, the steak was delicious, and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the mushroom taco. The restaurant has a fun, authentic Mexican vibe with colorful décor, a great playlist that really adds to the atmosphere, and it's honestly a cute spot if you want to snap a few photos. Everything was made fresh, and we'll definitely be back!

Also, the fryin cheese did not suit the soup at all- Oaxaca cheese tastes so much better with this type of soup & this is the only Mexican spot I know that uses something other than Oaxaca cheese. Needless to say, it did not work & rubbery cheese in soup is not it. I thought that maybe the soup from this place was a one off so I also ordered a couple tamales from here on a separate occasion as well. Unfortunately it was not a one off as the tamales were super dry & almost inedible because of that. I won't be returning back. Tamales super dry
