Okay, I need to come clean. I haven't stayed in an old school, motor inn type motel in probably 25-30 years. But we were looking for a Carmel Valley, low price motel that would be clean, get a good nights sleep, and take a shower. So we took a chance with this property....and it turned out to be fine. This motel met the criteria above. With its proximity to Carmel Valley Village, it was perfect. There is one thing that I need to point out to possible guests, their whole 'office hours' (8:30am-5pm) is a real thing. Clearly the Owners are not trying to provide any real customer service when they offer their guests coffee and pastries for breakfast, but then keep the office locked until 8:30am. I wish I could go to work at 8:30 am. This is rare and odd when you are in the hospitality business to only provide guests service between these hours. But make no mistake, they are very clear about their unique and strict office hours...I just couldn't believe it. So clearly I had to leave for work prior to 8:30am and missed my coffee and pastry. But if you saw me, you would say, "that guy does not need a pastry". If you need a clean, no frills motel with great water pressure, Hidden Valley inn will work just fine. read more

I had high hopes that I would get decent sleep when I booked. The previous night at the Carmel Valley Lodge up the road I heard traffic noise all night. Victoria at reception was very accomodating in checking me in and showing me the room, number 29, which though spartan was fine. Around 8 pm I heard a constant dull noise like a machine, maybe an air conditioning unit but I never discoverd the source. It made rest impossible but finally a few hours later it ceased. However, then I heard a woman talking and this went on until around 2:30 am. Since it was in the middle of the night there was no one to call for help. At 3:30 am I went online and found a bed and breakfast which allowed me to sleep well. At 7:30 am, anxious to leave, I brought my key to the office. No one except cleaning was there and I explained everything. They took my key. Later, I repeatedly called and was told that Victoria was at another location and that an email had been sent to her. I spoke with a woman by phone who said, We have your number on file to contact you. She told me the number and I corrected her: That is the wrong number and email. She sent the email to the wrong place and I subsequently spoke with my husband who told me he had received this strange email. The upshot was that not only did they charge me for the horrible night but also the day that I returned the key at 7:30 am. I was told that the balance would be refunded. I will never do business with this place and urge anyone else to avoid them, too. I am initiating procedings with the credit card company to get back the money they took from me. read more

Soft clean sheets, cozy atmosphere, AC and heating the WORKS. The saltwater pool was so refreshing on the hot days I stayed. The additional complimentary water and iced tea at the pool was such a nice touch! I was really thankful for the fresh pastries and coffee they had every morning in the office. Worst hotel experience I ever had. I arrived there 5:30 and the office was closed. And I couldn't stay there. They didn't provide me after hour phone number. But they full charged me $220 for the night. I asked them to give me a compensation for a free night, but they refused. What a customer service. read more

We just spent two nights here. The location is great and convenient. The pool and surrounding grounds are beautiful. Most rooms have very nice patio with nice overhang. The rooms appear to be recently remodeled. The bathroom had a redone vanity. However, the tile floor had broken/cracked tile, badly grouted. The tub had been patched and there were large gaps by the faucets. Water pressure was not great. The cabinet doors under the "bar" were wonky and didn't close properly. It's like the remodel job was not up to par and needs more attention. The coffee in the room was terrible so we thought we would take advantage of the free coffee and pastries in the office on the second morning. Sad to say, this was not served until 9AM!! Our pick was primarily based on location as the hotel looked walking distance to the Gardener Ranch where we had a wedding to attend. It's certainly close enough to walk but not so much in high heels due to the topography. The cal-king size bed was very comfy and I was a huge fan of the heated bathroom floors. The heating/cooling unit was noisy and not easy to use. We did not see any staff since we arrived late and left late. read more

No railing along steps down from office door. No grab bar or anti-slip floor in bath tub. Too few hooks or towel bars in bathroom. Glitch at check-in. No one at counter, took a few phone calls to get help. Sign saying "back in 30 mins" without time reference is not helpful. Otherwise rooms are clean, quiet, plush towels. Good breakfast croissants and quiche. Staff polite and helpful. No table in room. Maybe hotel is in middle of renovating? Bathroom has new cabinets but chpped tile floor. Stayed here for 2 nights w/ my wife for our anniversary getaway. Exceeded both our expectations. 11 miles out from highway one. Less than 1/2 mile from the restaurants in the Carmel valley. We really enjoyed how the inn is tucked away and not near any of the road traffic. Also the rooms are pretty standard, especially considering the price(a great price for the location). Wifi and tv worked well, same with the heat and ac unit. Our bed wasn't the comfiest but that's okay. Some small details you could tell were off or overlooked when the inn was being redone. No electrical outlets where you'd need one or where you'd think it should be. No fan in the bathroom. The inn staff were all very friendly and the inn offers a nice danish and coffee in the morning as you are on your way out to explore for the day. That was very nice. Would definitely stay here again and also recommend to friends and family. read more

The main office and actual location of the rooms are far away from each other (driving distance), and we were given the wrong directions by the lady at the office to our room. Aside from that, the staff did not give us any problems. They were very friendly and accommodated us the best that they could. It was very hot the weekend we stayed there, and unfortunately there was no air conditioning. The furniture is a little on the old school side, but it gives the place "character". Breakfast buffet and free wifi was good. It is close to Volcano Grill [highly recommended!!] and other good restaurants. All in all it was a good weekend, but I don't know if I would return again to this place. read more

Lovely little inn, which reminded me of the New England-style inns I'm used to as an east coaster. We were greeted by a friendly woman at the front desk who checked us in, gave us a quick overview of the place, and handed us two complementary glasses of wine (they have happy hour with wine between 5 and 6). Our room was clean and spacious and had a nice view of the pool with the mountains behind it (see the picture I posted). The wifi was fast which I was very thankful for since I have almost no cell phone service in the mountains! In the morning we had a nice breakfast, which was a step above the traditional continental breakfast with made-to-order waffles and good coffee. My only regret was that we only got to stay for one night! Someday I'd like to come back and take advantage of everything this hotel and their kind staff have to offer. read more

You get what you see, nothing more and nothing less. The rooms are fine, but beware of the shower! It has a mind of its own and can go from icy hot to piping cold without much reason almost as if someone in another room is flushing a toilet. Also I don't think the rooms are properly insulated because it was freezing at night & early morning. They do give you an extra blanket to combat that issue. Additionally the front desk staff didn't really know too much about the area which seemed weird? We asked if there we shuttles or tours for the vineyards and he wasn't sure. Also we asked if there was a place to rent bikes, which he also didn't know. I feel like Carmel is wine country so those should be things someone working at a hotel there should have knowledge of. The nice thing about this place is the breakfast. For being included in the price, it's definitely a wide assortment of items and they include waffles. read more

This is not a 5 star hotel equipped with modern furniture and newly built appliances, they didn't even have an AC thankfully it's always cold by the mountain areas, HOWEVER, the location of this place is great, we are surrounded by trees tucked in the mountains, exposed with fresh air, birds chirping and just green great scenery wherever you look! Solely the main reason I am giving this place 5 stars, I also fell in love with the old unique characteristics of the building, If you want a relaxing weekend getaway and want to get close to nature book this place. It is only 25 minutes away from the neighboring city which are also tourist spots, Carmel by the sea and Monterey. read more

I found this place on one of those travel sites (kayak?) for my girl's birthday getaway. I can't tell you how pleased we both were!! A hidden gem at the Hidden Valley Inn... Before you cringe, it really is a hidden gem. Overall, the best part about this place is we felt at home. Every year for Memorial Day, we make a family trip to a good friend's ranch. THAT feels like home to me. THIS PLACE feels like home!! We were kindly greeted at the office after coming in late with all the information we needed for a very enjoyable weekend. The place itself is homey. It's not a modernized hotel room with fine furniture, but that's the appeal to the home feeling. Each room has either a deck or patio with a table and 2 chairs. Our view was of a field and someone's yard. Not sure if it was the owners' or the neighbor's? Either way, not a bad view! We were surrounded by trees and grass everywhere that there wasn't a room or a pool. The main patio area has a pool, picnic tables, and at least 1 charcoal BBQ from what I remember - maybe more. One of my first thoughts on Saturday morning was "this is the perfect place for a group getaway/team bonding!" Wouldn't you know... a group of 10+ women came in that night and (I'm sure) had the weekend of their lives. There was a Continental breakfast served in the main house. It was the classiest, best tasting Continental breakfast I've ever had! Waffles, warm hard boiled eggs, yogurt, fresh juice, toast/bagels with 3 incredible jams, cereal, coffee... That's the short list. We were just a 10-15 minute walk from downtown. The downtown area by itself is a whole other amazing review! Just be sure you're walking on the right side of the street or on the sidewalk because the main road can be busy. Also, we were only a 20-25 minute drive from Carmel-By-The-Sea. It really was the perfect location and the perfect getaway!! We WILL be back! read more

We stayed at Hidden Valley Inn for two nights Jan 6 & 7th and this place didn't disappoint! It's off the beaten path and all the rooms are spacious and cozy. Its quiet, amazing for relaxing, and surround by trees and nature. On the second morning we woke up to deer roaming around the rooms. Inside our room we had a king size bed, extra blankets and a heater that you can control to your liking. The facility has a heated pool and two games so you can be active or relax on a lawn chair and read. The location is about a 20 min drive to downtown Carmel By the Sea and 30 from Monterey so going out to dinner or walking around a more crowded area is easy and convenient. We also chose to walk to the little village area that is 8 mins away where there is wine tasting, restaurants and our favorite Thai food place. We were very impressed with Hidden Valley Inn and the easy communication we had with the receptionist. Would definitely come back again! read more

$180++ for - a one bedroom with a queen bed lil suite - two single convertable sofa pull out beds in the living room area - small bathroom with shower that came with a dead belly up flying insect by the shower window, and a water saving toilet that borders on ridiculous (3 flushes to clear out a load o' human logs that could virtually clog and backflow if you are unlucky with the flush, and depending on how much and what you ate the night before that warranted an evacuation of your guts) - mini breakfast buffet that isn't half bad. It is a little pricey for most of us plebs, but it is the best value around. 20+ mins away from Carmel where it is way more expen$ive, but at least you are tucked into the Carmel Valley away from the tourism. CCI has two sets of lodgings, Arcadia (or Acadia) Lodge and Hidden Valley Inn. We stayed at the "hidden valley" which was a downward slope drive from the check-in, reception, and breakfast buffet dining area, a mini quiet backdrop of the countryside. Buffet includes: - Belgian style waffle irons with pitchers of pre-made batter. Good toasty stuff that's better than most breakfast hacks back in the SF Bay Area. - boiled eggs in shell - various bread for toasting, pastries, and muffins, as well as cereals - coffee, milk, OJ 3 stars for the overall experience, +1 star for the great customer service when making reservations and answering questions/helping you with your stay. read more

On the surface the place looks lovely. Flowers abound,the pool area is serene and it seems so peaceful. Step into your room and all thoughts of fabulous things disapear. The room smelled. Like mold and feet and what we figured out later was lingering leftovers from when the septic tanks overflow valve was activated by everyone using their plumbing. The room was dirty. Sand on the chairs,hair on the bathroom floor and sink. The blinds were bent and looked askew,so one felt that they needed to tilt to the left to look out the window. If someone is above you,plan on hearing every step they take (sung to The Police) Our bathroom had a dripping bath filler,the fixtures were from the 60's and the tile flooring was not safe nor up to code. This was a nice little place tucked back in the country of Carmel. We were excited to get there with a nice array of restaurants and Market just less than a mile down the road. The rooms were nice , housekeeping was amazing , and the owners were kind. Breakfast was delicious they made homemade waffles and organic cereals with milk and a number of pastries. The pool was nice and was slightly heated. We did make the mistake of going the weekend of the Big Sur International Marathon. The room next to us was Extremely Loud in the late hours of the night we had to call twice to get them to quiet down and it never happened. So needless to say we didn't get much sleep that first night. If I had any advice to make to the owners if someone calls twice walk down and knock on the door. Otherwise we had a wonderful stay and met some really great people. read more

True to its name, Hidden Valley Inn is a hidden gem in Carmel Valley. We stayed in a newly renovated room with a king sized bed that was so comfortable! The view of the mountains outside of our room was stunning and the grounds were beautifully landscaped. The entire property was quiet and peaceful. There is a shopping center and plenty of restaurants nearby. If you are looking for a cozy inn away from the hustle and bustle of larger hotels, but still close to Carmel and local sightseeing options, then this is the place for you. read more

What a great place! The ambiance is intimate and friendly from the staff to the rooms. Don't get me wrong if you want to spend 400-500/night you can find better (we paid about $170/night) but as we enjoyed everything in the surrounding areas and only spent the late afternoons/nights at the room we couldn't have been happier! The only slight I would have is some might see the rooms as dated but my husband and I saw it as quaint and a calming change of pace. You know, I stayed here for 3 nights for a wedding and initially was less than impressed. There's no room service. No gym. No dry cleaning. Wicker furniture. Tiny TVs. Just generally "Meh" for what the prices are. But after 2 days I really warmed up to the "summer camp vibe" and shut my yuppie self up. The free breakfast in the morning was not the best but it got it done- coffee carafes and cereal. Belgium waffle maker. The beds were comfy. The atmosphere was loud/could get really fratty, but it again, the summer camp vibe grew on me. I think I just wish it wasn't as expensive or offered more amenities. read more

After getting bad news about my race hotel, I searched frantically for another room in the area so I didn't have to camp out in my car. Fortunately I was able to get the last room at Country Garden Inn and could relax knowing that I'd have a bed to sleep in. Immediately upon calling them I realized that the service was going to be wonderful. They dealt with all of my frantic questions. Upon arrival, Brett at the front desk was an absolute charm. He asked me about my marathon plans and we started chatting about the area. Since I had the last room, I stayed in their second location up the road in the Carmel Village. After locating my room, I had difficulty with their finicky door. Once I was able to get in, I realized that this room was a bit dated. I didn't mind, but I feel like it is due for an update. Getting to sleep I realized that the bed was extremely stiff. Both my friend and I had some difficulty sleeping (especially since we had to wake up at 2:30am). But the rest of the necessities were great. I was surprised that they offered us a mini fridge, which managed to come in handy. And they were wonderful to provide the runners with breakfast at 3am. Unlike several of my other friend's hotels, we had a lenient check out time so we didn't have to worry about traveling home sweaty from our race. To be honest, the service deserves a 5 star review, unfortunately the room was not as stellar. It is in a great location, there are plenty of restaurants and little shops in the village and you are only thirty minutes from Big Sur or Carmel. read more

This is a very lovely place run by a slew of kind hosts! We stayed at the Country Garden Inn the evening of December 27. $130/night Service: The service here is wonderful. The people who run the place went out of their way to accommodate our various needs. They're also happy to recommend places to eat and see. For the price, we got way more bang for the buck than the other inns of comparable price along Hwy 1 we stayed in. Karen handled my reservation by phone. I asked if we could extend our check-out time until 3 pm and she said that they usually charged guests for an extended check-out time but that she would consult with the manager and see if they could extend the time free of charge. She called back the next day and said it would be all right. No extra fee. Karen was at the office when we arrived at the inn to check in. Though we arrived way before the designated check-in time (3 pm), she happily checked us in. At 5 pm, we joined the other guests for wine and cheese hour. Karen was there to offer recommendations for dinner in the area. The next morning, we joined the guests for a breakfast of waffles, English muffins, blueberry breakfast cake, bagels, hard-boiled eggs, tea, coffee, orange juice and fruit. Amenities: The usual--soap, good wifi connection, tv, a balcony. Lacking a mini-fridge, but let's overlook that and give this underrated inn a solid 5 stars! read more

2 & 1/2 stars. This review had me torn between 2 and 3 stars. Country Garden Inns in Carmel Valley has a sister property further up in 'town.' Because the main hotel was full, they put us up at the satellite hotel. My friends and I were the only people in the place. Rooms are spacious though quite outdated with not enough outlets to plug all your things in - phone, hairdryer, hot iron, regular iron, ipod, etc. Maybe we plug too many things in these days. I totally agree with Marie M. The B&B owners were so nice and accommodating at the buffet breakfast and they do have homemade waffles. Only bananas for fruit though. For the amount of $$ this place cost, nearly $240 a night with tax, etc. for a Friday and Saturday, I would expect a room like the Bellagio or something (their rooms are actually small...but you get the idea). read more

Its old but is very charming and the area is extremely nostalgic! So if old, peaceful amd senic are not your thing stay in the outter area this hotel the employees ARE AWESOME!!! Only thing i could nit pick is that its a little pricey...but the few days we were here are absolutly memorable!! They locald are very liberal so as a gay and interracial couple we were welcimed with open arms no hassle no discrimination!!! Foods here are local fresh organic and taste pure!! To all my fresh heads and ever expanding gay community CARMEL VALLEY IS THE PLACE TO BE AND HUDDEN VALLEY INN IS THE PLACE TOO STAY!! read more

well I dont mean to sound like a B&B snob or anything...or maybe because I stayed in the Hidden Valley and not the other side of this place...I didnt think it was good. #1 its like 11 miles away from HWY 1..which is how you get everywhere! and at night its a dark drive....yeah not exactly anywhere near the downtown carmel I was going for the room has dated decor, and a very uncomfy bed-springs were in my ribs and it was very firm. the bathroom is very cold and also very dated. we had like 3 little towels? not very plush, the gym offers better ones. breakfast was ok...i've had better, but you can tell they were trying with the gentleman making you one, and the softboiled eggs...everything else is just bagels and muffins. Good coffee however and we scored a great view of the hills once we were seated (you had to hike up a steep hill to get there however) overall, if this place was closer carmel it would have been nice and I would go back, but the windows were the old single pane windows and it felt very cold in there. It was reasonably priced, but I guess I know why now... comfort inn is literally 2 blocks from the shopping and stuff in carmel...might as well stay there if you are just looking for carmel. This was my first time at a B&B and it was really great! My guy treated me for my birthday in Aug and got a great packaged deal: a 2 night stay, 2 dinners at different restaurants, and 3 wine tastings for $400! That's a freaking steal (hard times). The room was quaint, with a kitchenette and a fireplace. Only downside was there was no AC, just a little fan. The front desk was courteous and helpful, and the owners are two cute older gentlemen. The breakfast was a little disappointing though, not a lot of variety. Waffles, hardboiled eggs, cereal, fruit, and pastries. Good location, great wine tasting places and restaurants nearby, and Big Sur 30 min away. read more

I loved staying at Country Garden Inn. The look and feel of the rooms is very comforting and welcoming. Its located at a beautiful place(valley) surrounded by nature everywhere. :) Parking was easy. Each room has one. Bathrooms were extremely clean. Breakfast is served every morning from 8 am to 10 am. They have beautifully decorated the breakfast place and fire place. Loved the entire stay. My husband and I were vacationing in the Carmel/Monterey area for our honeymoon. My husband had done research prior to our trip to insure us a romantic and wonderful honeymoon. He read several reviews and viewed pictures of the Country Garden Inns prior to booking our reservation on line. From the information he read on their website he was under the impression it was to be a B & B. Much to our disappointment this was not a B & B (or at least what our perception of what B & B should constitute). The efficiency room in which we checked into seemed to be from the 1970's. The bed, bedding, furnishings and bathroom fixtures were all very old fashioned. We settled into our room regardless and decided to make the best of it! We went out to dinner that night and came back to the room fairly tired and needing a good night sleep! What we got instead was a HORRIBLE and torturous night sleep. We were up the entire night with the bed springs poking us in the back! My husband NEVER complains about anything; although when his sleep is deprived! My poor husband was SO unhappy and disappointed with this Inn. "How could this place allow any person/guest to sleep in this bed?" They should really be ashamed of themselves! Enough of the negative stuff..... On a more positive note, being that it was our honeymoon the Inn did have a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries awaiting our arrival in our room. A very thoughtful and sweet touch! I must also give credit where credit is do and mention that the management was very kind and helpful and did refund our one night stay without any argument or question! The staff leave before 8pm so if you are arriving late expect to have to call around town searching for a new place to stay. I arrived to find out they staff leaves early and there is no one who can help you at the hotel (meaning no night staff) so I was locked out, sitting outside in the cold and dark. Not safe. I had to call an uber and drive down to Carmel By The Sea to find an open hotel that had a room for me. Terrible place! read more

We stayed here about 5 years ago and it was just ok then. This time we were supposed to be in a king room which was up some very rickety stairs. After we saw the room we changed to another one and on,y stayed 1 night instead of the 3 we planned to stay. We upgraded to a better location The Carmel Valley Ranch and have a beautiful suite for just little more. It is well worth it and would stay there again. We will NEVER stay at the County Garden Inns again. read more

Wow... stay away from this overpriced dump. Arrived for a wedding, and a bunch of us were staying at this, and various other inns in the area. Lady who checked us in was very nice, but we were told we would be staying at their "sister" property up the road. I tried to explain we needed to stay at the Country Inn, and not the Acacia since there was a shuttle for the guests up to the venue... but this was to no avail since we were told we could not stay at the inn we though we booked. Shockingly, another friend who booked a room after we did was able to stay at the Country Inn with not being shipped off to another property. Entering the room, we should have know there was going to be a problem. The room smelt terrible, the heater was on (even though it was a very warm summer day), and there was a iron burn on the carpet. Additionally half the outlets in the room did not work. Another person commented on the beds being ridiculously uncomfortable and I would agree 100%. Not sure how a bed can be both hard and sinking at the same time. Needless to say, the sleep was not good. At $200 per night you would think the rooms would be updated, clean, and maybe throw in a decent tv (not that that is too important, but there was some tiny tv in the room). Stay away from this property until they can at least clean up their act. read more

We had an end room downstairs we could see the pool area and out our patio door we looked out at a field felt like being on the country. The coffee and waffles were very good.
