HiFi is a celebration of food and music! A small establishment in Historic Filipinotown (hence the name HiFi), it's located across from Rideback Ranch (film company). As of Dec 2021, you order from the QR code at the front of the register to pull their menu up. The wifi wasn't an issue and we were able to order without a problem. There isn't a place to sit except the 3 tables out front. If you're able to get them for your group, you're good to go! We took our food to go, waiting about 20 minutes and enjoyed our lumpia, Sisig and adobo in the car! They've maximized the space to highlight their love for food, music and hoop. See my photos. This review is long overdue but it deserves the five star rating and more to me. HiFi Kitchen belongs in Historic Filipinotown as it represents the spirit and pride of the neighborhood while serving delicious Filipino dishes, both modern and traditional. I love the vibe of the spot as it plays 90s hip-hop and have decor based on that era and genre. Pre-covid pandemic, there was very little seating, only located at the window. Now, transactions are mainly contactless as I have always ordered ahead on their site. They have limited dishes so it's best to order ahead and not risking making the drive, only to find out they ran out. I have not had one bad dish or drink here. Talib Kawali- fried pork belly with fluffy white rice. I love to order the La-ing plate (taro leaves cooked in spices and coconut milk) with the lechon kawali. It has all the flavor and texture I would want in a dish. Hot chicken wings inasal- I normally get this with a side of their fries. These wings are not really spicy. It's not tangy like buffalo wings. It's more low key, peppery and earthy. It is served with atchara and pickles to balance out the taste. Lumpia- So good! I'd be happy if I bought to orders of these and eat it as my meal. I follow their social media to keep tabs on what is on special and what they have on deck. Gonna be honest, the only Filipino food I had before this was Jollibee. We came to grub at this spot for my buddy's birthday. It was pouring outside and we just stormed the place, but the homies that run it were great sports about it. As a vegetarian, the best things were: * Lumpia: It's like a fusion between a samosa and a spring roll. It's because as someone that comes from that culture, I have a clear idea of what the flavors should taste like, the consistency etc. Heard about this place because they have an array of options for Filipino food - they have gluten free, vegan options. This is what we ordered--- Chicken Adobo: tender boneless chicken thighs simmered in our signature cranberry-soy marinade, served with cucumber salad. HiFi Tacos (vo, vvo, gfo) Angeleno-inspired Filipino flavors: Got to the chicken adobo and tocino pastor tacos Food was bomb. Meat was tender, flavorful and even the cucumber/tomato salad was a great compliment to the adobo. This spot is a real snug place in the middle of historic Filipino town. Street parking is going to be your only option and because of COVID, there is limited seating outside. This place is awesome for Filipino comfort food. The shop front is discreet and we thought it would be more inviting if they had seating outside. There's only one counter by the window for seating so it's not a place to bring your whole family. We tried: Lechon Kawali: 4stars the pork is super good but a bit too fatty for me. We got three pieces of pork but all the other pictures I'm seeing now have way more??! The skin is perfectly crispy and the chimichurri sauce complements it beautifully. I love that they tried to include some veggies. Sweet Spaghetti: 3.5 stars. While good, we felt it was drowned in too much sauce that it became overwhelming. We wished there was more spaghetti to compensate for this! The beef franks and meatballs were pretty good. Lumpia: crispy, generous amount and meaty. Ube upside down pie: this is catered by creme caramel and the ube flavor is so rich and creamy. My girlfriend loved this especially. I wished it was crispier on the pie side but they don't make this in house so not much can be done there. Staff were kind and welcoming. The place is small and personally, I recommend takeout as there's really only one table and two chairs that are comfortable. Even then, the sun shines brightly into the dining area and makes it warm. Now, the food was pretty good. Especially the chicken adobo fried rice. BOMB but my partner got the pork belly plate (sorry I don't remember the name) and it was disappointing. The plate only included about 5 chunks of pork belly and white rice. It was okay, nothing special but didn't feel worth the price nor the time we waited. Do expect to wait at least 20mins for your food, but that's how you know it's made to order! You know when you go to pick up your order and they're playing ATCQ on blast in the kitchen, you're leaving your dining experience in the good hands. Some of the menu items are also named after living legends in the rap game: the Talib Kawali, a play on lechon kawali, is as delicious as it is punny. My favorite thing on the menu is probably the Giniling Fries, which is a kitchen sink dish of sorts that puts so many savory flavors into one to-go box. A little spicy, a little umami, and a lot of delicious, it's going to fill you up and make you want to go back for your next meal. The staff was really kind to me after I totally misnavigated to pick up my meal the first time I got takeout from them. Protip: the entrance is on the street, not the alleyway! Got the La'ing GF meal. Fairly new to flip food so wanted to try it out before heading off to catch my flight by the airport. Boba shop is right across the street so that's really convenient to grab both. Overall, food tasted just OK to me. Maybe it was just too mushy for me. Presentation wasn't there as u can see in the photo. Store inside was cute tho and the customer service was great here. YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY! 5 Stars for this business! The owner, Justin Foronda, has been very invested from start to end. He was the one to take our order, and possibly even cook it himself too. He's passionate about his culture and proud to have his restaurant become a staple in the Historic Filipinotown neighborhood. We ordered the Chicken Adobo (signature marinade, shredded chicken, house pickles, sautéed veggies 8.99), Lechon Kawali (crispy pork belly, sautéed veggies, house pickles, choice of homemade apple sarsa (v) or chimichurri 12.99), and La'ing (v) (coconut creamed taro leaf, faux-go'ong, chili oil, marinated tomato with cauliflower 9.99). Everything was amazing. The protein on each of these dishes was finger-licking good. The shredded chicken was amazing, I wanted to stuff my face with it, play a game of chubby bunny. The pork was soooo crunchy and softon the inside, in the most high quality way- seriously, 5-star techniques right there. The marinade was alsooooooo scrumptious on the vegan dish. I wanted to eat every piece of rice that touched the sauce. IT WAS SO GOOD!! I'm happy my job pushes me to explore every corner of the city. I wouldn't have found this place otherwise. HiFi Kitchen has without a doubt easily become one of my favorite places to eat. Great little joint in my favorite area of Los Angeles, Historic Filipinotown. Right across from the Boba Guys and Unidad Park, be sure to stop by this kitchen for some inspired Filipino food. Aesthetically, you won't find anything else like it. You will find the wall art and the art-installation behind the counter reminiscent of 90s hiphop. While the storefront is small --with a bar for seating-- you won't regret taking your food for takeout and eating it at the mural across the street. However, this is not just your mom or Auntie's Filipino food. It's Filipino's food with a twist. A lot of the items here are in a silog style --meaning a rice bowl with a main dish. What's cool is that the food interpretation feels like a Filipino American rendition of authentic meals. The dishes are aesthetic and healthier with modern garnishing, while still being distinctly Filipino and true to its roots. I ordered the Laing with cauliflower and the lechon kawali. While I'm not usually a fan of the taro leaves in coconut of laing, the bite from the roasted cauliflower gives it enough substance to complement the side of rice. Some pretty good Filipino food here. I tried the lechon and it was crispy on the outside with a nice sweet flavor to it, juicy and tender on the inside. The bowl came with some veggies and tomatoes, a small container of a delicious garlic sauce was also paired with my bowl that was garlicky-tangy and a great topping for the bowl. They had veggie lumpia to my surprise, it was good, but I will def. have to come back to try the classic pork lumpia. Washed this all down with a little can of Kalamansi juice! So bomb! The area is a lil rough but its not bad. There isnt much seating, maybe 4 or 5 stools. This is more of a pick up or take out type of spot not dine in. If you need some Filipino comfort food in DTLA, this is your spot! I've only been here once for the grand opening and been wanting to come back to try the lechon. All the photos of that dish looks really good. I tried the adobo, afritada and lumpia. While I enjoyed both dishes, the lumpia was my favorite. It's actually one of the best lumpias anywhere!
