highland tavern...we had our daughter's graduation party upstairs in may. the space was perfect (so fun how the garage doors open to downtown!) food was great, and the service could not be beat. our waitress treated us right! (i didn't include names; not sure if i was supposed to?) i had to plan the celebration from out of state, but it turned out to be no problem at all. the manager was super helpful and efficient. we couldn't have been more pleased!!! read more

Amazing comfort and bar food - among the best I've ever been to. Their tator tots are to die for. The ribs are delicious and have the perfect kick to them. I challenge anyone to find better pork rinds... So perfectly seasoned and melt in your mouth delicious. After getting a recommendation to come here we find that they were on DDD, how could you go wrong? They have plenty of TVs, a small outdoor patio, ping pong and foosball table. Like everyone else says, the tots are amazing. These are homemade, cheesy, and very very tasty tots. The atmosphere was good with good music and good service. I wouldn't recommend the wings, the habanero sauce was not very spicy or plentiful. The fries were your average skinny fries with no seasoning. The tots, ohhh the tots! read more

After seeing the magical tots on DDD I knew this place was a must while we were on vacation. They were just as good as they looked on tv, so crunchy and delicious. I can see why people like this place so much. For our first trip, everything was fantastic, especially the tots that everyone justifiably raves about. On my second trip, my pork sandwich was a bit of a disappointment because it had so little meat. But otherwise it was a good experience, and the service has been great both times. Went to try out their tots after my friends mom saw them on some food network show or something. Lunch was easy breezy. The tots really were good but too many for me to eat. The turkey sandwich was good and also too big to eat all at once. Although it did make a good snack later! I like watching the World Cup while we where having lunch (Germany v. Not gonna lie, I came here because my wife and I watch diners, drive ins and dives all the time. Didn't disappoint though. Had the pastrami sandwich and it was probably the best I've had. This place continues to deliver. I want to know who's cooking back in the kitchen, because that is one seriously skilled mofo. I've gone several times again, and the food is really, really well executed and yummy. It's not over the top inventive gourmet. Just perfectly executed, well flavored food, using nice, fresh, clean ingredients. I continue to love their salad. They've added a yummy tabbouleh side and chicken skewers that are so wonderfully flavored. His Dudeness (the most finicky, high maintenance eater you can imagine) just had the [panini-ized] Cubano, and was blown away by the flavors and textures. He had it with sweet potato fries, which he declared put Root Down's to shame. It was so good he wanted to save half his sandwich just so he could eat it for lunch the next day. Alas, he ended up wolfing it all down. I love this place. So glad to have a homey, comfortable, pleasant eatery/bar in my neighborhood that serves reliably yummy food that doesn't make you sick or sit in your stomach like a vat of doughy grease, all for a reasonable price. read more

We came here on the suggestion of a friend who saw the place featured on "Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives." We never saw that episode, but they wanted to try it, so we went, too. We planned to meet at 4:00 in the afternoon on a Sunday, and, when we got there, they were already there. We noticed the place has a number of good "Happy Hour" specials, including $2.50 domestics from 4 to 7. I liked that. Two of our friends were already waiting for us when we arrived right on time, and were waiting in a booth, but had not been served. We waited around another fifteen or twenty minutes while waitress after waitress just walked on by as if we were invisible, or had somehow fallen into a warp in the space/time continuum. It was a little unnerving. We also noticed that the place was a bit small - maybe five tables and six booths? There is, of course, the bar since it is a bar, and a secondary counter for seating between the bar and the tables, but it was just a bit compact and "crowded." Sitting in the booth, the table was right up against my stomach. I wouldn't get anything in my lap, but it was uncomfortable, and I'm sure people bigger than I would not even be able to use the booths. As for the tables, most of the seating in the place is for four or fewer, but they can push tables together for larger parties. They're in real trouble if they happen to get larger parties than that, or more than one large party shows at the same time. Anyway, I digress. There's not much for vegetarians to eat, but they do offer a few options, and only salads if you want to go low fat, or grease-free. One of the greasy options was the "Tavern Tots." People rave about these, (probably what Guy Fieri came for on DDD), and they are correct. The Tavern Tots are absolutely, without question, incredible. The best tots I've ever had anywhere. They are crisp on the outside, tender on the inside, and seasoned to perfection. They are served with both ranch and blue cheese dressing, and the blue cheese dressing is great. We also had the grilled cheese sandwich, which was excellent, too, but not much of a bargain at $8.00 - fair, but not great. I got mine with the french fries because I hadn't tried the tots before. The fries had a good flavor, and the weren't greasy, but they reminded me more of Kobey's shoestring potatoes than french fries. In other words, they're "skinny," very skinny. I would like to mention that the food was prepared perfectly, and way above standards for a pub. For the most part, this is a pretty average pub. The walls echo sounds so that even with a few people, it sounds very loud, and it is difficult to have a conversation. The waitstaff were nice enough, but I'm still wondering about that glitch at the beginning, what's up with that? And, even though the place is in an up and coming neighborhood, it is still in an area of town I would not want to be in after dark. When you are sitting there, look across the street at the houses with barred windows, six foot fences, and, just down the street, the sign warning passersby that the property is protected by guard dogs. The neighborhood still has a way to go to escape its recent image. I only graded this place up from average to very good based on the food. It's not really inexpensive, but it is really, really good - especially the tots. If you go there, you have to try the tots. read more

Why I haven't had a fried egg on my pastrami sandwiches in the past now befuddles me. It was great. I will return a few times a year. We got here at 6PM Saturday night and the place was slammed. (It's a bit loud and tight quarters with all the people here) We grabbed a beer, waited an hour... Totally worth the wait!!!OMG! Bartenders were great, super friendly and saw there was a huge wait and asked anyone if they could start them with drinks which I appreciate. The food was good, my egg on my sandwhich wasn't cooked properly but everything else was delicious! The only complaint I really have is the hostess was NOT friendly what so ever, didn't even say hi to us at all, never took our name or anything, she looked like she hated her job. Best. Tater Tots. Ever. I come here almost once a week just for the tots. The service is friendly and the food comes really quickly. The only problem I experienced here was a few days ago when I came to put my name in for a table. They told me 20 minutes. I came back 20 minutes later and they said it would be another 20 which was slightly frustrating. It gets really busy during dinner hours so it was understandable. We saw this place on DDD on the Food network, so when we were traveling out to see my brother in law for Thanks giving I told my wife this was a must do. They delivered in every way! Tots still think about them. I got a ruben which was heaven, wife got their steak and cheese..wow. Got my son the grilled cheese (most people go bread and cheese, these guys rock it). And I will say if you like pork rinds (even remotely) you need these chili lime and they take 3 days to make they are worth getting and taking with you for later. read more

I recently revisited and saw that they have expanded the place, nearly doubling it in size. Also added a pool table and sliding garage door. Sweet artwork too. Fantastic brunch specials on Saturday and Sunday. We loved their extra spicy bloody mary made with housemade jalapeño and cucumber infused vodka. Hubby enjoyed his biscuits and gravy. I tried their turkey on hoagie roll. We, of course, had to order the tavern tots and was happy with them. The food was good, but what really made this place stand out for us was the decor and feel of the place, plus the excellent service from the friendly hostess to our awesome server, Ariana.
