Greta (a seven-year old girl who lives in Berkeley and who likes story telling) and her grandmother were enjoying a day of kite flying at the Berkeley Marina when suddenly, Greta said, "Oh no, Bubbie! My kite just broke" Her Bubbie looked up kites and toy shops and said, "Let's go across the way over there to see what the kite truck has and see if they can fix it". Well not only did Tom help Greta fix her single line kite that was starting to get too easy for her, he helped her pick out a new, two line kite was harder to learn to use but less likely to break when it fell because it had no rods. Tom showed them how to launch and steer the new kite and said, "its a good thing I'm not too busy right now...I can give you a lesson!" Greta wants to let you know that Tom is great and helped her learn in just one day. She also wants to say that he is very helpful but that you need patient and do not hog his attention if he is busy because that would be rude.

We have tried and failed more times than I can remember to fly a kite. Got a nice kite from Tom and finally tasted sweet kiting success.

Got a kite from Tom. Have tried kiting on 8 other occasions with no success. The smile says it all! Thanks for the quality kite Tom!

Kite fans should come to A Day On The Water 2 and enjoy kites from Highline Kites, made famous at the Berkeley Kite Festival

Somebody told you to go fly a kite? You can get one here. They have some really beautiful kites and a wide selection. Best of all they can show you how to fly a kite like a pro. They have everything you need for flying kites. They sell out of a truck in the Berkeley Marina at Cesar Chavez Park. Mostly there Fri-Sun. If you have ever been to the Berkeley Kite Festival a lot of the big and real nice kites came from this company. They are very friendly, knowledgeable, and low priced. Highline Kites will be part of the A Day On The Water 2 festival. Another good reason to go to it. Come enjoy the kites.

Stopped by last Sunday to buy some accessories for my kites and ask some questions. Tom was a great help and a wealth of knowledge. I will try to buy all my kites and supplies I can from him in the future. How lucky we are to have a guy like this local!

Wasn't able to find kites anywhere. Thanks to yelp for helping me find HighLine Kites. I bought a cheap colorful Octopus kite for less than $20 for my 2 year old.

I would encourage you to ride a bike (tons of bike parking) or take public transit. There is not a lot of parking for cars here, although you could park on the street. I also shop at REI, but much prefer Sports Basement. I even use their free 1lb propane tank refills (after initial purchase of a refillable tank) and I feel that that is a very smart thing to do give that the normal propane canisters are totally non-recyclable and considered hazardous waste, so you cannot and should not even throw them away. I found a hazardous waste disposal/recycle site where I got rid of mine, good riddance. The refillable ones they sell at Sports Basement is the way to go. Sports Basement has a good return policy and for the most part friendly people working there. I did run in to what seemed like an incompetent phone support person however. I had called the 800 number to cancel a preorder on a bike and she acted like she had no idea what I was talking about, and ended up telling me I would have to call the store I had set it for pick up at. It turns out, I was able to cancel the preorder via the 'AI' chatbot on the website. I'm really not sure why the phone rep. wasn't able to help with that.

Set some boxes by me and I tried them on and then said what do I do if I want to get a different size that you don't have in stock. He said he can order it online. That was it. Did not ask me any questions about what I was looking for or offered to make any suggestions. Visit Two- I took a couple of different sandals off the shelf and waited until I saw an older clerk, not just someone out of high school or college, , putting things away just out of sight in the stock area. Told him what I wanted and which shoe sizes I needed to try. He came back with whole sizes in one type of shoe, Chaco brand, and the other one he said they only had this one size and they didn't carry any half sizes in that shoe either. I said well that's too big for me, there's nothing else? No. He didn't ask me any questions either. Finally when he came back out, I said do you happen to have a size 39? (That's a European sizing.) He said yes we do. I said, that's 8.5, a half size and you just told me you didn't have any half sizes in that shoe. I asked if they had a different color then black, so he went into the stockroom and found a color preferable to my liking. So ended up purchasing that shoe. But if you're working in shoes there, how could you not know that European sizes and how they correspond? REI used to staff knowledgeable people in each section, including shoes. Do you think they would be interested in making a sale. I don't know what management is like these days there, but I'm a member and it's a huge disappointment.

This place does require patience. You'll need to walk in circles, dig through racks, and really search. But if you're willing to put in the time, it pays off. The prices have gone up a bit since the early days, but compared to retail and their standard outlet stores, but the deals are still amazing. This place is the OG. If you allow time for parking and give yourself a solid hour to browse, you're almost guaranteed to walk out with a treasure or two. It is huge with two different sides. Due to its size, there are more options of everything. I generally at least find one item when I make a trip out here. I've found a long down jacket before for the price of $60 when MSRP'd at $400. Denali and Nuptse jackets are rare to find. You will have to take your time and look at everything. Expect to be in there for 30 min to an hour if you like to sort through everything. Employees have always been nice and helpful. I always stop by when heading out to the bay or passing by. I never make a trip just to go to this store, or else you put yourself up for disappointment. It's an outlet! Like I said- hit or miss.
