Today was my first visit to Hilights Salon. Upon my arrival, I was immediately greeted and given a tour of the salon which made me feel very welcomed. After waiting two weeks for my appointment, I was super nervous about getting my hair done by someone new. I've had horrible experiences in the past at different salons and wasn't sure what to expect this time around. I got my color and cut done by Cassie and words cannot express how happy I am with the final outcome. Cassie was super professional, sweet, easy to talk to, and extremely accommodating. Erin has been doing my hair for the past three years. I had an incident a few months ago where someone else (different salon) had dyed my hair neon blue when I was going for a platinum silver. First my hair turned neon green and I had to wash it out with PRELL. My hair was fried (from treatment and the shampoo) and I had to cut 6 inches off my hair. Erin examined my hair carefully and we had to make the decision to dye it dark again, close to my natural color (a little lighter). It was a hard transition for me but Erin knew exactly what she was doing. It's been two months since I met with Erin and my dark hair is starting to fade back into a blonde that I LOVE. in the summer I will be able to get back to the original blonde that I had. I have been a client of hilites salon for years now. Admittedly, off and on for no particular reason. But I find myself always returning and for the past few years I have been a steady client. I am writing this review to say that ALL of the stylists at this Salon are great! I have had Tricia the owner do my hair, Deena and today had Jessica a newer stylist do my first balayage! She did an awesome job, the colors blended beautifully with the end result being exactly what I wanted. Tricia employs the best of the best for her clients!! Been bouncing around looking for a place to cut my hair. For a dude, hilights as a name is kind of suspicious, but fear not. Got my hair cut by Tricia. She was pretty good. Friendly and she seems to know what shes doing. $25 bucks a guys hair cut, wash, and style is pretty reasonable around here. For me, there are 3 major components for getting your haircut. 1: Has to be a good general haircut 2: the less talk the better 3: availability for appointments Hilights hit on all 3. I walked away feeling like i got a good haircut, she made sure not to get hair down my back, cleaned up the back at the neck line, did some styling, and offered some advice. Not to be an ass, but I like to take some me time to ponder life and think about things while i get my haircut. Tricia was an active talker, but it felt sincere, so I'll let it slide. I had an appointment at 12:30 on a Tuesday and the place was empty which was great because parking was easy and i was able to sit right down. I hesitate to even say that because I dont want to have to compete for an appointment. Overall, Tricia and the woman at the desk were friendly, got the job done right, and for a good price. The place is modern looking and clean. Als got a referal coupon for $15 bucks off for me and for my referral. Key things to know: They accept credit cards, but no tipping on them. There is a lot in the back that you access from valley brook. Also, the stylist washes your hair (went to a place where a guy does it. No thanks) Will go again and will tell others about this place. read more

So disappointed. My stylist had left so I was re-booked with someone new. She did the exact same thing as my previous stylist did (followed my previous stylist notes) and my hair turned out fine.... went to pay and she charged me $768 for a bleach re-touch before tip. I had my hair done in September 2020 and the exact same service was $229 plus I tipped her $72 (30%).... no one informed me in anyway at anytime that the prices have increased and honestly I get prices going up but I was charged $768 plus $159 in tip so total $928 for a bleach re-touch! That's a 308% price increase! I'm totally disgusted and I'm so disappointed. Please don't book here unless you know what they are going to charge you. So shady. I've been looking for a new hair place ever since moving back to north Jersey. I don't get anything fancy - just wash/cut/style. Therefore, I was not willing to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but I wanted something better than what I was used to - where the stylist actually had an opinion and helped me make decisions about my hair. I was set up with Melissa, who is supposedly only a "junior" stylist, so obviously I was a bit apprehensive about that. But to my surprise, she was amazing! Best hair stylist I've had to date and I love my haircut. She spent a lot of time consulting with me before doing anything and giving me lots of feedback and advice about how to cut/style my hair. On top of all of that, she was incredibly friendly, and I guess because she is only technically a junior stylist, it only cost $30! (and I have very long, thick hair too, which took a lot of time). Thru the power of instagram I found Hilights Salon and it has been a joy! Kendra was the lucky individual who took care of my partial highlights. I requested very casual natural looking auburn/copper highlights. She walked me thru the colors, placement and the thickness of the highlights. With her patience and finesse, the entire process was pleasant. It Took about 2 hours ( I have a lot of hair ) and the color results couldn't have been better. Just left wanting more. Because I was not blessed with bushy- thick- dark eyebrows, I wanted to color them and to my surprise the color Kendra picked was super perfect! Great color coordination Kendra! On my 2nd visit, I desperately needed a deep conditioning service because my ends were frizzier than a brillo pad. The conditioner treatment recommended worked marvelous on my hair. I was extremely happy with the result. I don't remember the names of the lovely two ladies who took care of me but they were great too. The salon is clean and tidy. Always find street parking. Last time I was here, I was treated poorly, they lost all of the appointments due to some computer issues. When we walked in we were given dirty looks by the staff (because they assumed we were "walk-ins on a Friday night" and no one did anything to help with the situation, they basically said, no one here is willing to help. The first couple of times I tried this place I was not a fan. When I made my appointment I asked for someone that could handle curly hair and I was told (kind of with arrogance) that all their stylist can manage all hair types....Not true! they assigned me to someone but I don't want to name them, that did a good job at coloring (it was just single process) but my cut and blowdry I hated, which sucks because it was really expensive. When I went back to touch up the roots (same stylist) it was $80 and she wouldn't blow dry my hair (this is why I used to color my hair at home). 10 months after that, I decided to give the place a try again, but ask for a different stylist and what a difference. I did a complete look change, highlights, bayalage, treatment, blow dry (which she did amazing) and bought product...paid so much money (like close to $420 inc/ gratuity) and I didn't care because I was happy. I have gone back to her twice and love it! I just won't buy product, because I can buy the same from Ulta and at least get points, get sales, use coupons etc. read more

I had to wait 50 minutes for my appointment and I had to ask 3 times for an update .... I understand you're busy but communication with your clients is key. Especially first time clients, you think you would want to make a good first impression since you only get one chance! I cut off 12" to donate and asked for a shaggy bob with lots of layers and side swept bangs.... I got a plain old bob! I had to ask Linda (an experienced hair stylist they claim) to go back and add more layers. I will not return and cannot recommend; stay away unless you want a boring cut and are willing to spend time waiting. Very disappointing, but the cut was for a good cause and hair will grow back ... can't wait to go home to have my hairstylist fix this boring bob. read more

What started out as a coloring for a few grays that I have in the front of my hair (very few) the process is a so called color camouflage that fads in 2-3 months, well for some reason Gennifer brushed this chemical process throughout my hair line and sections of the back of my hair, once washed out it had black highlights on most of my hair and she did not style my hair after. I was so upset I have a wedding coming up in 2 weeks and a 50th birthday party as well, I called and had to drive back and try to fix this mistake and know it has reddish orange highlights and looks awful! If I could give this place ZERO stars I would ! I went in there with some pics of what I wanted . Of course I understood I wouldn't get the exact same color . The hair stylist said I can't get this bluish silver u want but I can get a neutral silver . Mind you .. she still said she could get some sort of SILVER in my hair right ? So at the end of this my hair came out caramel/blonde . And it was just ugly . I said please fix my hair or I'm not paying for this or I'll only pay partial for your time but this is not what u said I would get . Now if she said sorry your hair will come out caramel but the second time around we can push for neutral silver I would've expected this . NO ! As much as she will deny it she promised I would at least get a neutral silver . Little did they know the police officer was a friend of mine .. even he said this was ridiculous and my hair wasn't how they said it would be . But it was up to me to pay . I paid because well I'm not broke and I didn't go there to not pay . But for a salon to go this far and in front of my 12 year olds daughter who's birthday was THE NEXT DAY ! I have been to Hilights Salon a few times since 2012. I usually have Gina doing my hair and I think I have had Kendra once when I was a walk in. When I normally get my hair done by Gina, it comes out fantastic. However, this time around I booked an appointment with Tricia because she had an opening. I was a bit apprehensive because I was so used to Gina but boy was I in for a surprise. Tricia scooped me in and took me to a chair immediately and starting to wash my hair. Their hair products smell fantastic by the way. She talked to me the whole time she was washing my hair. She then led me to another chair where she was going to chop my hair off because I decided not to get my haircut every six months like I'm supposed to. So then she started chopping it off and as she chopped it off, she explained what she was doing and why she was doing it. She asked me questions about myself, my life and other things. Let me tell you, she's a people person. Tricia began drying my hair and she did it so softly, never pulled on my hair (neither did Gina). She then explained to me things I should do to my hair like glaze it and a frizz free blowout and why they are beneficial to my hair. She gave me a face frame and REAL bangs. She cut about 3 to 3 1/2 inches off and the best part was that she asked me if that was okay (all the stylists at Hilights ask you. That doesn't happen at many other salons). I decided to book my next hair cut appointment with her six months from now like she told me. I think I'm gonna try the hair glaze with her next time. Overall, I'm extremely happy with my new haircut. My hair is so soft, healthy, and gorgeous. I'm pretty sure she will be my go-to stylist from this day forward. After getting a bad cut elsewhere, I looked at reviews on Yelp for a new place that could (hopefully) provide a fix - and before I went out at the end of the week! I called on a Wednesday (I think) and the very pleasant receptionist gave me a Friday morning appointment with Deena. Boy did I get lucky! She listened to what I had to say before making suggestions of her own and I told her to go with what she thought would be best. The results were awesome! I was really impressed with how she was able to give me a cut that looks good whether I wear my hair curly or straight. Unlike a lot of salons I've been to in the area (you know the ones - no supplies put away, a dirty microwave and coffee pot in a corner, knickknacks littering every available surface), this one was very clean and professional-looking. They have those great modern, freestanding shampoo sinks that don't kill your neck or the stylist's back (one of my great traumas from my days in beauty school). My blow-out was great too and the final price was VERY reasonable. I will absolutely be going back and won't hesitate to recommend this place to others. (Though I'm tempted to take points off for being right across the street from Wendy's - thank god it was 10 in the morning or I'd have been over there scarfing down some chicken nuggets.
