My experience at this hair salon was an absolute disaster…read more On December 19th, I went for a root touch-up and had sent messages and visuals beforehand showing my hair's current condition and the color I wanted. I chose this salon because my previous stylist was far away, and my hair was incredibly healthy and strong. My hair expert friends confirmed this; I had been working for a year to grow my hair. However, because they didn't properly lighten my roots, Paulina Sanchez applied a dark and greenish color without asking me. I was shocked when I looked in the mirror. I went home and sent them a video crying, asking, "What did you do?" but they didn't reply. I later visited the salon so they could see it in person, but they ignored me and said, "We are busy." Within 2-3 days, my hair became multiple colors and kept falling out. I developed sores on my scalp and cheeks. The salon staff sent me a long apology message, saying they would fix their mistake and scheduled to correct my hair this week. However, despite knowing how damaged my hair was, they did not consider that it needed time to rest. Today, I had my appointment. They applied bleach for 5 hours to my hair, and some areas still didn't lighten. While washing my hair, I saw my broken hair in the hands of two staff members, yet they didn't say anything. They mockingly said "Happy holidays" when they finished. Even the other customers saw my hair was falling out. This process was extremely damaging financially, emotionally, and psychologically. My hair has become completely unhealthy, and I will have to shave it tomorrow. The 10 days I spent dealing with this experience caused me serious trauma. I am also a business owner in the U.S. and have never had problems with my clients, as they are more important to me than money. If you cannot do your work properly in this country, please leave this business to those who can. I believe these individuals' licenses should be revoked. Please do not visit this salon to avoid being victimized. I definitely do not recommend it.

If I could rate this salon a zero, I would. I went to Erin to have a full balayage . I showed her specific pictures and told her a few times that I hated the copper tone that was in my hair at that time. After 5 hours of being there and over $300 later, I left with my head fully copper toned. I could not even look in the mirror at myself. I was disgusted and I hated the color. I called a few days later and spoke to Erin to tell her how I hated it so bad. She told me to come back in and she would fix it for me. Well, I did and when she was done "fixing" it, I was charged another $250. I called a few days later to talk to the own, Trisha, and she has yet to return my phone call. It has now been about two weeks without a returned call. However, I did get a call from the "manager," who I believe is named Dena. She was honestly the rudest, most condescending and disrespectful person. When I was telling her my situation, not only did she have an attitude but she laughed several times at me. I am completely appalled and dissatisfied with every aspect of this "business." My hair is still uneven. They refuse to refund me any amount. Instead, they wanted me to come and have my hair done for the THIRD time with the owner. However, it should have been done right the first time. Since it was not, it should have been done right the second time. Now I will not go back a third time. For what? So my hair can now be processed three times and be completely damaged? No. I will definitely never go back again. I could have went to a top salon in the city and had an amazing job done and definitely not have paid over $600. I am absolutely disgusted with this establishment and will be sure to let the Better Business Bureau know as well. read more

I have always gone to all different types of places to get my hair done. I never felt 100% comfortable with anybody doing my hair. My friend recommended Hilights (Trish). I needed a hair change and a new hair salon so I figured to give it a shot! We both made appointments. The second I met Trish, I knew I was never going to let anybody else touch my hair but her!! I have dark brown hair, and told her I want to go blonde. She explained to me all about transitioning to blonde, etc, etc.. I walked out with an AWESOME new hair cut and a beautiful color! (My friend also walked out with an amazing haircut as well!) I have gotten so many compliments on it!I am going back in March for a touch up and to go lighter. I trust her totally, and she is the sweetest person ever! She is so fun and you can tell she loves her job! I also got my eyebrows threaded there, and they looked AMAZING! I will never go back to waxing! I forgot the woman's name who does the eyebrow threading (I am so sorry!) but you just need to ask for her and they will know who you're talking about! The rest of the staff is also VERY friendly. The salon itself is really nice and clean. And the staff is not pushing you to buy super expensive products, which I have experienced in the past. I can only say good things about Hilights Salon. Ana Lee has been working on my hair for the last 2 years and has been my best hairstylist yet. As a woman with dark Asian hair, I've come across many people who did not know how to work with my hair type. Often times when I would want to lighten my hair, and other stylists ended up turning it orange or just shut me down right away telling me that it's not do-able. Ana, on the other hand, is a professional through and through. When I did my first consultation with her and talked about my hair goals, she came up with a flexible plan that helped me get there over time. When you show up for your appointment, there are no surprises. She will tell you all the information that you need to know and what she will be doing that day. I would often get my hair dyed and trimmed. She is passionate and meticulous with her work, almost as if she is going through each and every strand of hair. Thanks to her, I have achieved my hair goals, and she continues to help me feel more like myself with every appointment. I do not trust anyone else with my hair care needs and goals. I am new to the area, and as such, relied upon the reviews on YELP, for selecting a salon. Hilights had great reviews (except for some troll who wrote about the lighting) which I found to be perfect. I was willing to pay for the top stylist, and colorist, and since I was changing my hair color to auburn (from blonde), I was quite nervous. I arrived at the salon, just as a photographer was leaving, and learned that my stylist that day had won an award for best colorist. I was very excited, and so was she, but she quickly switched it into professional, and we began to discuss my hair. Trisha was so professional, I wondered how the previous 30 minutes, had not gone strait to her head. It did not. It was not about her, she made me feel it was all about ME!. 90 minutes later, I was the perfect shade of red, my hair was cut perfectly, and I was treated like a princess. The entire experience was priceless, and I am already pre-booked for touch ups. Trisha you are worth every penny. I pass this salon on my way to the bus stop wach morning, it looked nice and clean and their hours are convenient. I came in the late afternoon, and Trisha did my hair. Trisha is courteous and pleasant with a great sense of humor. I got a highlight and cut with a blowout. My hair was beautifully styled and had a lot of movement. I must say, that I was in the salon when Melissa was there. Melissa wrote a scathing review here, but I myst say, they did everything they could to accomodate her demands, in fact Dina the front end manage offered to buy her lunch, even after she screamed at everyone who tried to fix her box dyed, messed up, head if hair. I tknow she lied about her previous dye jobs, because she admitted it to me when I dared to ask her. Sometimes people need hear themselves talk to others. She was embarrassing. If I were that salon owner, I would post a warning on here to any shop she walks into. Trisha and her team did everything humanly possible to fix her hair. Some things just cannot be fixed. I applaud Trisha and her team for having the courage to try it. read more

I am VERY picky when it comes to my hair. I have been going to hilights for about a year now and I've been to both Tricia and Gina. I understand gina was the previous owner, and Tricia is the new owner. Both of them know what they are doing, with people and with hair. They have a nice decor, its super clean (even for a hair salon) and i always leave feeling beautiful. They also have an online booking system that is convenient when I'm at work to make an appointment . Its also super convenient that they have a parking lot behind so i can get parking at ANY time, and if your familiar with ridge road, you know its a bit@# to park on. I have recommended many friends who also go there, and they are always thrilled with how they look too.. so its not just me. If you want a salon that is trendy and priced well for the service, i suggest hilights. read more

Well, I have to say, I am not the easiest client. My hair is the most important thing I wear everyday. I used to go to my favorite colorist until she moved out of state so I was forced to try new places. I've been to many prestigious places and paid top dollar, but always left disappointed. Fortunately, I heard that Tricia opened up her salon and I knew I had to give it a shot. As I had some tough times in the past, I was still reluctant to try another place, but Tricia really cared and consulted me through the process. As a result, I booked an appointment with Linda, and can't wait to get back there again for my next appointment! I have been going to Hilights and have had the fabulous Cassie for 2 and half years. The first time I met Cassie, I walked in with long, over processed, and stringy blonde hair. That day, she changed my life. We cut 7 inches off and she created a master piece with a blonde balayage. I always said to myself, " I could never pull off short hair, I'll be the older lady with gray long hair". To tell you the truth, now that I have been working with her, I will never go back to having long hair again. From the first time I have met her until now, she ALWAYS listens to my thoughts about styles/color, gives great suggestions for up keep and product use, and continues to make me feel amazing every time I leave there. Hilights Salon is the BEST place you can go to get your hair done. I have been going there for the past four years, and I do not plan on ever leaving! Every time I get my hair colored, it turns out to be exactly what I wanted (even better). Over the years I have been red, light brown, and now blond (my hair is naturally dark brown). When I get a new haircut and blowout, I leave feeling like a model. I am very crazed about the length of my hair, and they always cut it the perfect length. I even donated ten inches of hair there, and I loved the haircut they gave me. Tricia and Deena always take great care of me, and I always leave thrilled with the outcome. The salon Experience has been wonderful! From the moment you walk in the staff at Hilights quickly checks you in and offers you a beverage! Those morning appointments can be rough without coffee - but they have you covered! My stylist Erin is phenomenal! Check out the Hilights insta and you'll see!! She always explains the process and offers helpful hair care advice. Love her! After being turned into a brassy mess the staff suggested her over the phone over a year ago and I will never use anyone else! I have naturally red hair and was VERY nervousness to et highlights and lowlights in it for the first time. Melissa made me feel veryyy comfortable and eased my nerves about finally dying my hair. I could not have been more happy with the results so much that I keep going back to get them done even more drastically than the first time. I was searching for a new salon for a while, i found them on Instagram, their insta is bomb. I called and waited a week for an appointment, but i wanted a big change with an top stylist. I choose an educator which i was notified on the phone that there will be 2 people working on me, i appreciated knowing. I was greeting warmly and i got a cute tour, the salon was way bigger than i thought It was and i liked to know about the history, and that It was a small female run business. #girlpower My stylist was Melissa, she and her associate worked magic, i felt so happy and beautiful when i left, they even posted my hair on their IG! This 5 star review is based on my first impression and will be updated after my appointment tomorrow. Salon was very clean and trendy. Super friendly staff. I spoke to the women at the front desk (sorry i didn't get your name) and one of the stylists, Erin. I have been going to the same stylist for 15 years and she unfortunately had to step down from doing hair due to personal reasons so i have been in the market for a new salon for quite some time. Based on the conversation and first impression of Erin and her extensive knowledge I would feel confident recommending someone here. They certainly seem like they know what they are doing. I've been dying my hair since middle school, and it wasn't until years later when I took a chance on Hilights Salon that I actually loved my hair! Cassie is the best! I've been seeing her for about three years now, and I'm obsessed with my hair after every visit. Whether I want a trim, a new color, or a fabulous blowout, she knows how to make me happy. If for whatever reason she's not available, I always ask for Mimi! She's so much fun to talk to and gives great scalp massages. More than anything, I love both of these ladies because they always make me feel comfortable. They listen and together, we figure out what's best for my hair. read more

My whole family and I come here all of the time. Elizabeth (Liz) and Erin do our hair and we love it!!! The place is nice, very clean and the girls are very friendly! They have become a part of our family! I would give them all of the stars in the world if I could. If there are any bad reviews is because some people are haters and they cannot see what is good. I recommend this place to everybody that lives around the area because these girls never disappoint! I am very happy with their level professionalism and warmth. Everyone asks how I have such beautiful hair and I always tell them - Erin from Hilights Salon! I've been seeing Erin Roney since 2015 and I would even drive from RI (when I lived there) to NJ for hair appointments. She has taught me so much on what would work for me -color, cut, and even hair products. Thanks to her hair care tips - my hair is so healthy after multiple sessions of balayage and highlights over the past years. This salon saved my hair! My hair was burned off from another hair stylist from Fait Maison Salon in Bayonne. The pervious hair stylist also had me walk out with uneven blotch yellow blonde hair. When I contacted Hilights Salon they connected me with Brittnay! She made me feel comfortable even though my hair looked crazy at the time. She listened to my goals for my hair and, was knowledgeable on what needed to happen for me to get there. She got me to a solid color the first time we met, and has gotten my hair to a healthy state. The front concierge left as well, and now there are new staff members. For one, the main person that is and should be the first impression to the salon - the front concierge manager, Dawn - is completely imposing, rude and unprofessional. Then the rest of the staff seems pleasant, but definetly made to feel rushed and non cared for. Here are a few reasons to back of my statement: To put things under perspective, for this visit I had just requested a simple haircut & blowdry. Nothing else. 1. To start, I had multiple text notifications from the salon sending me reminders that I had an appointment. I showed up on time, and I was told otherwise - that I was not showing up on the system nor did I have an appointment. I was ready to leave since Dawn did not provide a resolution or an apology for the salon's confusion until a stylist passed by and took me in. 2. When I was brought in, I was just asked "what do you want?", no proper consultation and all was completely rushed. Then, I was told my hair was clean so I didnt "need" a proper wash (per the package description). So no wash, cut dry and then blow dry quickly without any product to protect my hair from heat damage nor was given the option to request this is usually my preference. 3. At the end, I was told the total for this 15-20 minute service was $80+, I had stated my experience and there was not a care in the world from Dawn, her response was " the standard fee for blowout and haircut is $80". I felt this was pretty high and not appropriate for the bad customer experience I had, but I still paid and left the salon. I went back and looked at the list prices displayed on Substance's salon's website. Here's what it states: - Under Women's Menu: "Classic Cut + Blowdry - Shampoo & conditioner, Haircut & Blowdry : $55-65" - Under "Salon Menu" ' "women's haircuts Level 1 = $69, Level 2 = $74, Level 3= $80, Level 4=$84. I was NOT provided a reason to the fact I was being charge for level 3, the answer provided was "this is a standard fee". Which clearly, what is written on the website does NOT support this statement. 4. Oh! To top it off, as I was paying without asking for what had happened - Dawn (instead of apologizing for the confusion and the MESS of a customer service experience) began speaking and said she didn't know what had happened and imposed that maybe I had done something wrong! IT'S ALL IN WRITING AND THE APPOINMENT WAS SET THROUGH THE TEXT REMINDERS THAT THE SALON PROVIDES. The whole experience was COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE AND I WILL NOT BE RETURNING nor recommending this place to anyone in the Rutherford area!! It's quite sad, because this used to be my home salon and I loved all the staff and how cared for I felt everytime. I would always be listened to completely, cared for and consulted, never rushed and kicked out the door like today! Now I have no choice but to find another salon that cares for their clientelle, respects, consults and treats each individual as top priority.

Parking was metered and easily accessible. I was greeted with a masked receptionist who took my temperature and got me ready for blow out appointment. Washed my hair in back sink and then took me to first chair for blowout. Shane was my stylist and made my hair look amazing. I touched the back of scalp and color from the scalp came on my finger so basically the shampoo after color wasn't done properly and there was still a lot of color left. I was so displeased. I went back. It was raining and really cold that day I still went back, the salon was closed. I wrote them an email next day and they just responded with a sorry on the email and saying they will talk to the girl who shampooed but I think even if they were a teaching salon the main stylist should have checked if the service was done properly, it felt like negligence and rushed service. I was not feeling well that day, and after that I had to wash my hair again at 9 PM on a very cold day, only because they didn't do it properly, i had an early morning flight next day and this totally ruined my mood. I expected them to offer me some refund atleast as service was so dismal.. when I had left 40% tip as well. Nothing like that not even a call from them for apologizing properly when i was an old customer.. This experience left such a bad taste in mouth, the color also stained my nails before my hawaii trip. I'm not going back

I came in with shoulder length hair, and he gave me a pixie cut which is not at all what I asked for. Very sloppy cut. Was more focused on talking rather than focusing on the haircut. When I said it was too short and was extremely polite, no yelling etc. and asked what we could do, he refused to fix it for me at any capacity because he felt "too awkward now" and let me leave without charge. It's taken a long time for me to grow it out and it definitely left me frustrated with my hair for a long time. I was hesitant to leave a review so long ago because he told me the last business he started , he had to close down mid Covid. I was empathetic to this, I desire the business future success but I do not recommend this place for young women with thick hair such as myself.
