I had been going to a salon closer to my home for a while and wasn't necessarily unhappy. But it takes a while to get an appointment and I was in a time bind when I saw a Groupon for this salon. I looked at their photos, of which they have a ton on Facebook, and decided to give it a shot. I'm very picky and the photos being of their own work posted by their own customers made me feel confident. After I made my appointment for two days later, I was nervous because the person they told me I would see was listed on their website as an intern. But my experience was great! Let me start buy saying I had really high hopes for my hair coloring experience but it was not as I had hoped for. I originally went to the salon for a bridal up-do for my best friends wedding and hit it off with the stylist Erin. I did half up-half down with the bottom being curled. Even though my curls came out I still wanted to go back to get my hair colored b/c I know my hair can be difficult to curl and I was confident that she was going to be an expert colorist. When I called to make the appt. for my hair they told me I HAD to come in for a consultation. I was annoyed about this b/c I didnt have the time and they wouldnt let me schedule the appt. UNTIL I came in first. The consultation lasted less than 5 min., I showed her a pic and she said "oh yea we can do that for you." I scheduled an appt. and came back a few days later, she was nice enough to squeeze me in b/c she had a cancellation. Day of my appt: I was in the salon from 9:30 in the morning until 3 in the afternoon. I wanted a brown to light blonde balayage. My hair was box dyed black about 2-3 months before and my original hair color is dark brown. She bleached my whole head and then applied a glaze of some kind and a toner. But if you are doing a bayalage which is a completely different color on the bottom heads then on the head how can you apply the same product all over? The stylist kept going on and on to everyone in the salon how this was black box dye before and look at the color now. So I was excited to see the final product. However, my hair was not at all like the picture and was not a balayage it was all one color, ORANGE! Based on her conversations with the other people in the salon I gathered it must be difficult to go from black to the blonde I wanted but that was NEVER communicated to me. If this was going to be an issue it should have been communicated to me during the consultation that I was forced to go to. On top of everything my hair cost me around $280 which is expensive but if it was what I wanted I would have happily paid it. (Obviously I had to pay it). I knew it was going to be expensive but I never get my hair done and I really wanted to treat myself which is why I went to this salon to begin with. I know a few people that go there and they have always had positive experiences. I waited a few days before calling the salon b/c the stylist told me it was going to lighten up and those really blonde pieces I wanted were going to come through. When I called the salon the owner was really helpful and told me I could come back in and they would fix it. I was a little embarrassed b/c I felt bad but why should I? I just paid $300 for my hair to be orange!!! The stylist put another glaze on my hair which I knew wasnt going to work b/c again how can you have a balayage and apply the same thing to your whole head? So my hair is still golden orange and all one color no balayage! I wasnt going to write a review but Im really pissed the more and more I think about it. Im so nervous to even go back to a salon but I have to b/c my roots are coming in and my hair is just a mess. Im not bashing the salon, I think overall they do a descent job but choose your stylist carefully and make sure they communicate to you properly what they are capable of and what expectations you should realistically have. read more

Had a very bad experience.i went here with lots of expectations .I did a $45 haircut but my hair were not even looking like they just had a haircut.there were no layers at all, even after I did layers.They have in experienced staff(Alexa). 2nd time I called them for a blow dry but since they were giving '"urgent " appointment, she said they will charge more and we agreed upon $33. When my blow dry was done , she charged me $45. When I asked that we agreed upon $33 over phone , she said it was her "mistake". read more

Moved to the area recently and saw the mostly good reviews here on Yelp...well I have to say it must really depend who you are talking with...I was talking with the "Manager" and she must have woke up on the wrong side of the bed. The salon only had 2 customers there in the middle of color process - so it's not like she didn't have time to talk to me. I expressed interest in both a haircut and in the near future Keratin treatment when it was time to have mine redone. I have naturally VERY curly hair and asked which stylist she would recommend for my cut and she told me "no one in particular, all our stylists are DECENT" (ummm if I was a stylist here I would FLIP if my manager told a new prospective customer I was just decent at doing anything!!!) Having curly hair my entire life I have always been to salons where 1 or 2 stylists were known for their talent in dealing with curly hair - it IS different! I told her that didn't sound very convincing and maybe this wasn't the right salon for me and she was already walking away when she said "ok! Thank you!" complete with attitude. Maybe she was frustrated with me because I asked for which brands of Keratin and Frizz-free Blow out they use and she didn't know the answers? Seems like a perfectly legit question and something the salon manager should be able to answer. Giving 2 stars since the salon was clean and nicely decorated/up to date. Otherwise would have given 1 star for the attitude and customer service. It's really too bad I was hoping my search for a new salon was over. read more

I might be the worst hair "patient" ever. I'm picky, I want to know every move the stylist is making, and I'm not afraid to let you know if I don't like something.... Not only does Tricia handle my horrible hair disposition, but she produces a flawless fabulous look everytime I see her. As long as I live in the state of New Jersey, I will never go to another stylist. That's how much I love Tricia's work!!! I do not recommend this salon at all! My daughter and I came into this salon last week Sunday. My daughter is almost 4 years old dl I figured a level 1 stylist would be fine. When my daughter had her hair wash, her shirt got completely soaked. The stylist proceeded to take my daughter to her chair. She gave her a trim and blowout. The stylist proceeded to dry my daughters shirt as much as she came with a blow dryer. I had an appointment the same day bit for a later time so we decided to go home. I changed my daughter's top and I brushed my daughter's hair and thats when I saw how uneven the cut and random pieces sticking out from the bottom. I called the salon right away and they said they need to see if that stylist has availability to have us come back. I requested for my daughter's hair to be fixed with the stylist I was seeing later thag day which was a level 2, and they granted my request. I came back again, and the second stylist saw the uneven cut and she fixed it. Shortly after my daughter's hair was fixed I got my hair cut. I requested for a small trim in length, layers and a face frame. When it was blow dried it looked good. I didn't wash my hair for 3 day and when I did I saw how uneven my hair was. I have long, thick hair and the salon charged an additional $10. I decided to go to another salon and got an experienced hairstylist that evened out my cut and layers. This was our first time at this salon and I did my research to make sure they had experienced stylist. I know they have different level stylist. DO NOT GET A LEVEL 1 or 2 STYLIST! You will regret it. Maybe the other higher level stylist might have led to a different result but I was so done and over calling this salon and asking for them to fix their mistakes. After moving to the area almost a year ago, I've been trying to find my new hair stylist to no avail...until today. Melissa did an amazing job fixing the last haircut I received that left my hair with uneven and sporadic layers and gave me advice on how best to proceed with bangs that had also been cut unevenly. I don't mind trying new salons when it comes to haircuts or blowouts but I go to ONE specific person for highlights. I decided to try this salon and get highlights done, and I was really nervous. Making an appointment was extremely easy and they followed up with me the next day just to confirm. The girl that helped me (wish I could remember her name) was so welcoming from the moment I met her. I showed her several pictures of what I wanted and told her to do whatever she was best at based on the photos. Since she's a "level one" stylist I was a little skeptical of her doing my hair, but it came out fantastic! If that's a "level one" I can't imagine what's a level three ...especially when it comes to the prices because I paid $200. The reason I'm giving this place four stars is because the prices are too high, and the other woman in the salon need to be a little more welcoming. I understand that they have a greeter, but he doesn't do hair and I think it's unprofessional when you're at a salon for the first time and you don't even know what a person specializes in. The girls working there never introduced themselves , or even asked me what "level" I was interested in getting. This salon just wants to take money from clients. I canceled my appointment after being kind enough to reschedule when I went all the way over there and the stylist couldn't cut my hair. She flat out refused to cut my hair into a pixie giving me all sorts of excuses. Then I agreed to reschedule. The day of my appointment (several hours before) I canceled and they said they would charge me 50% of what I was going to pay. And the other stylist who could cut pixies charges $56 while regular cuts charge $40!!!! I disputed it and the receptionist was rude and claimed to not understand my English. Finally she said she would charge me 25%. So then I find myself forced to come in for a cut, and I don't even know if they'll be able to cut it. Don't waste your time with this salon they are not worth it. read more

I love Hilights Salon! Ask for Gina! She always does an amazing job on my hair!! Every time I go to get my hair done, Gina always takes her time and listens to what I want done with my hair. I did the ombré, got multiple trims and hilights by Gina. The people who work there are very friendly and accommodating. I moved to the neighborhood and saw this salon on Ridge Rd on my way home, so I figured I would check them out. I'm glad I did. I stopped by on my way home from work and they were able to get me in the next day if I did my color with one stylist and cut with another. Cassie took great care with my color. Omg! I got my hair done by Erin and its amazing. I got a balayage for dark hair with caramel blonde accents. I also got a haircut. I have to say that it's the best haircut I've gotten in a while. I was very scared to dye my hair for the first time in my life and have it gone wrong, but that is definitely not the case. She was very friendly and helpful. (1/19/2013) My curly hair has been rescued! Deena is awesome. i came here in October with great trepidation after getting a DISASTROUS cut to my long, naturally curly hair in June (i lost over 1/2 of it). It was actually cut so badly that it didn't curl anymore (it's straight underneath and very fine) I asked for a consultation first, and she talked through it patiently with me, understood the problem and agreed with my preference to do too little than rather than too much. She cut a minimal amount of hair, but it was easy to see the improvement - it started to curl again! (what a relief!) So, i went back this week, and we did a little more, and it is more improved. I feel like she really understands my hair and could see what had been done wrong and how to take baby steps (at my request) to fix it. Everyone i have talked to here is super nice and helpful. The owner, Tricia, has a very nice business going in a little shop in a strip of stores on Ridge Road. I will definitely be seeing Deena again, and highly recommend her to anyone - if she can handle MY weird curly hair, she can do anything! :) read more

I was immediately accommodated by a warm and friendly voice on the other end. I walked in and was greeted for my appointment, and offered coffee. My stylist Erin was an absolute doll! She may be a junior stylist, but she gave me the best cut and color I have had in the longest time. This salon is completely top notch! In an age when client experience matters and competition is fierce, customer service is imperative. Turning away a customer for being 10 minutes late after you tell them on the phone it's ok to come within 10 minutes of the appointed time is beyond contempt. Perhaps customers should leave if you don't seat them in front of a chair with scissors in your hands right away, as soon as they arrive. Should people leave if you don't serve them within 10 minutes that they are there? I've been there plenty of times when service doesn't start on time. So is your time more precious than other people's time.mI get that lateness causes other clients to wait. How about applying some of that creativity towards problem solving and making things work for everyone. I'm sure late clients wouldn't mind waiting to be served in between clients by the stylist they booked (not a stand in). I know that there are down times and stylist aren't busy the entire time. A bit of flexibility would only help your business! Otherwise, there are plenty of salons with 15 minutes late policies. Really, don't bother to refute, defend or make accusations against me, as I'm sure you'll do, as you've done to all other unhappy customers. A classy salon would be gracious and apologetic, not defensive. Update: I expected a response and thought this was going to happen. I don't often write reviews and expected that any negative reviews Would result in slander from the owner. You've done this to others before. Negative reviews....everyone sees them. It's just I was hoping you would put more effort into improving your business model instead of wasting time with your long excuses, long come backs, explanations and character smearing. Over the years, I have had horrible experiences with hair colorists at a variety of salons across NY and NJ. I tried everywhere and never felt satisfied with the results. So, I resorted to coloring my own hair.... I wasn't completely comfortable with those results either, but at least I wasn't spending hundreds of dollars! Then, I happened upon Highlights Salon, in Lyndhurst, NJ. That's where I met Tricia. Although I was there for just a haircut, she talked to me about giving professional color one more try and promised me that I would love the outcome. I reluctantly agreed expecting the same results that I ended up with numerous times before. WAS I WRONG!!! I LOVE MY HAIR for the first time in years. Tricia added highlights and lowlights to my blonde hair and I am so pleased with the color and dimension that I wanted to share my review. I would definitely recommend Highlights!! The salon is clean, current, and the stylists and colorists are friendly and professional. As an added bonus, they offer make-up and eyebrow threading services as well. Great salon!! read more
