So the E said a few weeks back, may I buy you supper for Christmas. And of course this was OK and because I hadn't been on the town in the City of Hills in a while I took to searching on the asterisk and was all what is this HCG place. Apparently it's been here for awhile. Admittedly I just come and go but I come and go pretty regularly and think I'm reasonably observant but yet. Totally in the dark. E had never been either but her tastes generally orient in a different direction so there's that. We went. Then, a week later, I went again. This time taking a different pair of kin as their Christmas supper. Because it was that good of an experience. All around. Totally. From the front of the house to the lady behind the bar which sadly is only half a bar because they are too close to a church to serve whisky. What an awesome law. Because you know that everybody on the way to church would see this establishment that's closed during church and be all omg I totally want a whisky right now and off to Walmart they'd go to get some and there would never be anybody in the pew. Sorry. Sidetrack. Yes. Everybody was so nice! And attentive and fun to hang out with while asking for food and provenance and the rest. The meals were delicious. Had brussels sprouts app one day and the cauliflower that tastes like chicken wings the next. Hanger steak was in my belly one night and the sirloin special the next. I liked the hanger better but not by much and it's on the regular menu so there you go. Get yourself some. I think there was a halibut and a sea bass or one or the other in there and many of the local IPA and their small brew on tap selection felt pretty good so I wasn't wanting for anything. Service here is great, the food did not really have any wow-factor. It was pretty busy for a week night. For an appetizer, my friend and I shared the Spinach and Artichoke dip which had shredded Asiago cheese and rosemary tostadas. This dish was fresh, strongly flavored, warm, creamy, and delicious. I would definitely order this again. Under the classics page, we got the Chicken Rockerfeller and Curry Shrimp and Scallops. The chicken Rockerfeller had creamy spinach and proscuitto. This dish came with basmati rice and carrots. I really enjoyed the spinach and softness of the chicken. My own curry and shrimp dish was the most disappointing part of this dinner. The shrimp and scallops were cooked with a smoky flavor. That part was good. The curry was so watery and flavorless though. If i were blindfolded and tasted it, I wouldn't have even known it was curry. Anyway, the bill came out to be around $60 for all that. One of the pricier places in Oneonta. It would've been more worth it if my main course were more satisfying. Hill City Grill is known for having a huge variety of drinks, so make sure you try some wine! read more

Fabulous Main Street find! This restaurant is from the same family as Toscana but has more space between tables and a better vibe. Showed up again at an empty restaurant but HCG filled up fast. We were in from out of town for our sons soccer game and were arriving into town a little bit later. This was one of the fee places that stayed open later (9pm on a Friday night) and oh my did we hit the jackpot. The food was outstanding, the service was phenomenal and the the prices were extremely reasonable. My wife ordered the hanger steak and I ordered the chicken Rockefeller. Both were outstanding. If we ever are back in town we will certainly go back. read more

Doing the SUNY NY college campus tours this week and tonight we're crashing in Oneonta. Dinner at Hill City Grill was the perfect remedy for this exhausted family. We were delighted by the friendly, warm, smiling waitstaff. Cate, our server, had an enthusiasm I rarely encounter. Happy, knowledgeable and competent. The demeanor of a server, whether in a coffee shop or a Michelin rated establishment, cannot be underestimated. We also chatted with Nick, who was all smiles and super cool. The food was fresh, innovative, generous and delicious and the rustic, exposed brick, intimate, inviting atmosphere all contributed to a flawless dining experience. read more

My first night in town included a very good dinner at Hill City Grill. Good salads (blue cheese dressing is home made and tasted great) and my Crab Cake entrée was exactly what I wanted and contained two large cakes with a lot of flaky crab meat on top of pickled cucumber slices with grilled veggies and a cool creamy sauce as well as a couple shots of a sriracha flavored sauce. The dessert menu looked good but there was no room left after the entrée and salad. Good service via Danielle and the place is perfect if it's just two dining or a family/small group. I made a second trip before leaving town and while service wasn't as good as the first visit (it was busier on a Wednesday than a Friday), the Short Rib over Macaroni and Cheese was terrific. You can taste several different cheeses and you'll likely have plenty for lunch the next day, or at least a great snack later that night. read more

First impression walking in, it's cute. Small with an upscale feel. We waited at the bar for our table and the bartender Jess was very sweet and attentive. We got a glass of wine each and over heard they do not serve liquor due to some regulation about serving liquor within a certain distance to a church. We ordered the chipotle calamari, the calamari is cooked perfectly and served with a chipotle mayo. It was delicious. Once we were seated we were given hot/toasted multi grain bread with pesto butter that was phenomenal. I happen to really enjoy pesto so it was a nice surprise. I got the grilled chicken pesto mayo panini, it came on multigrain chibata and was delicious, was craving mashed potatoes which they kindly subbed for the French fries it came with and they were AMAZING. Over all was a delicious, wonderful dinner. Highly recommend eating here. Everything we ordered was great. read more

Excellent food with great service. Our party of 4 ordered items off the specials including a shrimp and scallop pasta dish and a medium rare duck breast. The duck was phenomenal - tender and juicy with a crispy skin. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meal. If you want a nice meal and are willing to spend a little more, this is an excellent option. This was a great surprise! We popped in late and got a great meal quickly. The menu is somewhat small but there were about a half a dozen specials. The server was good but we were a little surprised that she had to go ask the prices of the specials, which were higher than expected. The dishes sounded great, but they were in mid-20's so we stuck with sandwiches in the $10-$12 dollar range. My husband had a burger and I had the grilled chicken sandwich. Both were excellent and the fries were stellar. We will definitely go back. Street parking is a little hard to come by in that area of Main Street, but if it's after hours, park in the City Hall lot across the street. I hope they don't arrest me for saying that. read more

Went on a fancy date with my girlfriend for Valentine's Day weekend. The waitress and restaurant was very nice, but that is where the pleasure ends. We started off our night with some fried calamari. It was solid but nothing crazy was expecting more for the caliber of what this restaurant was flaunting. Then the time to order our entree came upon us. We were deciding on what to order when the waitress told us about the "amazing specials" we were hooked. She told us about a filet mignon wrapped in bacon with some veggies that she highly recommended it. We were set! We haven't had filet in years and wanted to treat ourselves so we decided to go for it. But that was a mistake we came to understand when heading back home. I ordered my filet medium rare and I got the slab of meat back still MOOING. Was almost as if the outside was seared and the inside was left to be raw,chewy and bloody. I tend to never send food back since I understand sometimes mistakes happen and I can move passed a slight mistake but this was a NO NO. My girlfriend ordered hers medium well and it was definitely cooked very rare. The waitress came to our table asking if the filet was cooked properly almost in the tone that something was wrong and she was definitely correct. We asked her to send it back and finish cooking the meal for a chance of redemption. It came back still very rare but edible at this point and yes, I have had some bloody rare steak but what I had served to me before was not it. After deciding to actually dig in more into the meal now that I knew it was "cooked" I was baffled by the foul flavor the topping of the filet had. At first I thought maybe it's just a very strong flavor of some horse radish or something but it tasted foul as if gone bad or extremely sour. I'm not sure why they would pair that with this dish and asked my girlfriend if I was just uncultured in the appreciation of this decision to be put on the plate but she was very put off as well. We both scraped off the topping and decided to just stick to the filet itself as the sole meal and was still not impressed. The quality of the meat was nowhere near the consistency and texture that I've had at other restaurants in my past experience and was extremely disappointed. I overheard the table across from us have the same issue with the fillet being undercooked and I was feeling their frustration. They charged $30 for this "special" that ended up with both my girlfriend and myself sick at the end of the night. The waitress apologized and "accommodated" us with a dessert on the house but I definitely felt robbed. This meal had no place being in my stomach and I felt horrible after having it there. I saw the ratings of this place and was really excited to have a beautiful night with my lady. Although the experience wasn't anywhere near spectacular we still laugh about it today. I'm not giving this place another chance and if you do happen to give this place a shot. Stay away from the specials! I hope this review helps and don't get food poisoning like we did. Wow! This cute little restaurant was honestly one of the best I've been to down here! The waitress was super sweet and helpful and served us with a smile on her face, something I take into consideration when I go out to eat. I felt very comfortable and some and my date sat right by the window, so we could watch passerby's. I ordered the steak and my date ordered a burger, and we both loved our meals! I already had my leftovers as another meal, it was so tasty! The mashed potatoes and steak were perfect and the veggies were also delicious, not too mushy or anything. Steak was cooked perfectly also, was very impressed. This is also the first time I've had my steak already cut for me, which to be fair was a lot easier than having to cut it! Previous reviews of this place didn't let me down, Hill City Grill was great. My sister is a vegan and usually she doesn't have any other options at restaurants but a salad or French fries. Hill City Grill had two meal options and when we asked about a vegan appetizer, they didn't have any but said they could bring out some homemade roasted red pepper hummus that wasn't on the menu. Honestly, my favorite part of the meal was the honey butter and the warm multigrain bread they gave us when we sat down- not to say our meals weren't good, because everything was definitely delicious! read more

I was in Oneonta from Maryland, and looking for a place to eat. A local recommended Hill City Grill. I was expecting a diner or burger joint. I was pleasantly surprised and wrong! I arrived right at 4:00, opening. I was seated right away by my hostess/waitress. She could not have been better. What a find. Never expected to discover this fine a restaurant in a somewhat back water town in the middle of nowhere. Here to visit Baseball Hall of Fame & this was a highly recommended place by our hotel (Hampton Inn). Varied menu with all sorts of choices, several very unusual. I had Moroccan lamb meatballs served on a bed of arugula & couscous with olives & other goodies. Nicely presented & excellent. One other of our party had braised sort ribs on home made mac & cheese. Yummy. Service was excellent, Danielle took great care of us. They also have local crafted beers & good wine list. Ambience & prices in line with an upper class establishment. I have been here twice now while in town. And both times it has knocked my socks off. First time I got the salmon, which was cooked perfectly, with the accompaniments that went so well. Wow! Great food and great service! We've been here before and had a good experience then, but tonight, wow! Hubby and daughter shared macaroni and bacon cheese filled breaded and fried appetizer ( I forget their fancy name). All I know is that they loved them and they looked heavenly! Hubby and daughter each got a cheeseburger and fries which they enjoyed. I am on a restricted diet and opted for the sea bass with veggies. All I can say is that it was the best fish I've eaten since I can remember. Really flavorful and delicious. Hubby appreciated a good selection of craft beer and I enjoyed a Saratoga Seltzer with lemon. The waitress was attentive and nice--she suggested the sea bass because of my dietary restrictions. So the plan was to eat pizza at the place next door until I saw the menu in the window. I told my husband and son I was eating at Hill City Grill and they could follow me or have pizza. My husband followed and my son had pizza. We split the Asian Steak salad and then split the Wonton Sashimi Tuna appetizer. Made a reservation for 6 o'clock. Showed up at 5:30 to a sign that said "Short-staffed, closed Thurs 8-12 to Fri 8-14. We were there Sat the 21st and it was a ghost town. They were locked, no one alerted us or cancelled our reservation. VERY bad business and the food has historically been very poor with bad service. Will never dine here again. read more
