The staff is amazing! Our server, Sebastian, was super attentive and constantly making sure we had everything we needed The owners were there and also came by to make sure everything was good. The inside is newly updated and looks great! The food was really good! Everything tasted fresh. We were there for breakfast. Everyone got a different type of item (omelet, scrambles, power plate, pancakes, etc). It's been over 15 years since we ate here but with the new owners, the updated interior and delicious food, we will definitely be back soon! read more

Why change a great thing? We came down for country fried steak and eggs and left with nothing. Staff was nice but they ran out at 11 am on a Sunday morning. Let me say great customer service .. that's why I gave it 3 stars. Waiter was friendly and absolutely awesome personality but food was not great. I ordered the cilantro chicken salad. The greens were not fresh, extremely wilted which ruined the salad. To top it off the chicken had no flavor. It's like the food isn't made with love. They just dish out. Price wise I felt it was expensive. My salad was over $25 with taxes and tip as it is $19.99. That's isn't reasonable for the quality not being great. I've loved this place for years, but this visit missed the mark. When I asked how it was outside after being offered patio seating, I was told, "Well, I don't know, you just came from outside." It felt unnecessarily snarky. Hospitality starts with tone, and this wasn't it. The Grilled Chicken Avocado is listed with mixed greens, but I was served a large bowl of romaine with no explanation. If ingredients change, communicate that. It's basic service. We also had to track someone down for water, despite the restaurant not being busy. The ambiance and food is still solid, their pancake variations and burgers are consistently great, which makes the service experience even more disappointing. In town for a couple days and needed to run some errands with my aunt so she suggested we come here for breakfast. The original owners sold the business sometime ago and they've updated a lot of the inside. One interesting thing in the foyer was a big Christmas tree and being the month of May I just had to say Merry Christmas to the waitress when she seated us. I had a pretty decent eggs Benedict and fresh orange juice and my aunt grabbed a breakfast burrito that was ginormous in size. Food was good, but restaurant was a little empty from what I remember when the old owners were here. Maybe just being super early on a Tuesday morning. The crowd had shown up yet. I went to Hill Street cafe with my mom specifically to try the pancakes since they have so many different flavors. Once we were there I honestly could not choose which one looked the best but I ultimately decided to go with the Oreo pancakes. They had a QR code on their menu to look at the seasonal pancakes which was a collection of different styles of Hawaiian pancakes. They told us that they didn't have those anymore for some reason but our waitress was nice enough to be able to accommodate an order of the pineapple pancakes since my mom had been looking forward to it and because they still had all the ingredients. We went on a Monday afternoon so it was pretty quiet but there were still a few people. They also had a really nice outdoor area that we didn't see til after the fact but I'd definitely eat out there next time. As for the pancakes themselves, I didn't love mine. They were just 4 regular buttermilk pancakes with orea sprinkles and whipped cream on top. They weren't bad they just weren't great. It was a big portion and so I took home my leftover to eat the next morning and they were kinda better reheated in my opinion. My mom loved her pancakes though. Hers had pineapple baked into the batter and since they were specialized she only got 3 pancakes but it was still plenty to fill her up and eat for leftovers. She also got a late which was very pretty. Overall the food was okay, the service was great, and the vibes were kinda lacking, but I'd try it again for lunch. read more

Don't come here often, but stop by because was in the area. Not sure what to order so I just got the tuna out. Bread could have been better toasted or grilled. The Mexican churro pancakes were huge the churros a little bit too dry or hard the pancake batter I believe hot Cheetos in it only ate about a third of this stack too big and sweet I think the best item I enjoyed was the salad. It was fresh all the ingredients and well serve Service was good a little busy but found myself having to ask more than once for an item. I had ordered like extra napkins or more water or a refill. When I'm no longer pregnant and on a restricted diet, I plan on trying more things! I got the veggie omelette and was very happy with it, while my husband got the crepe flight, fresh orange juice, and eggs, bacon, and potatoes. We also tried the cinnamon roll which would have been too sweet for me anyway but was still really good and looked amazing when it first came out. Had lunch here a few times and every time the service was good. The servers are friendly and check in on you throughout the meal. I've even seen the owner walking around and chatting with the regulars. They have an extensive menu so there is something for everyone. They have a happy hour menu and sometimes even have themed specials for holidays such as Valentine's Day. Everything I've tried was yummy and the portion size was good. My family and I found Hill Street Cafe by chance after an event, and we were so pleasantly surprised. As soon as we walked in, it smelled amazing and had the coziest, most welcoming atmosphere. The space is clean, warm, and inviting. Right away we had a feeling it was going to be good. Our waiter was fantastic. When I asked for my breakfast without cheese, he kindly asked if it was due to a dairy allergy. I told him yes, and he was extremely attentive, making sure the kitchen prepared everything dairy-free and with care to avoid cross-contamination. That meant a lot and made me feel completely safe eating there. Not every restaurant takes allergies seriously, but they definitely do here. The food itself was delicious, and the portions were generous. I enjoyed it so much that I told my husband we had to go back. And we returned again in the same week. We ordered several dishes, and everything was fantastic. The staff both times were genuinely kind, attentive, and friendly. One of my favorite touches is their fresh-squeezed orange juice they juice it right in the dining area, and you can taste the difference. So fresh, so good. You can also tell they have a lot of regulars, which says a lot about the consistency and the community vibe. Plus, they offer great deals! This is officially one of our new favorite cafe spots. I visit Ventura once or twice a year, my bff comes into town from TX and so we meet up at her sisters. We love to eat and always looking for a good spot, her sister recommended Hill Street and Oh my my this hit the spot! I had machaca (beef) with eggs, home potatoes and couldn't forget the beans that were yummy! Loved how well cooked the meat was and very flavorful! Everyone loved their food. On the coffee side, 3 of us had cafe de olla and it wasn't enjoyable. I didn't want to say anything and then I had to... I had to add creamer to make it better, it was missing something. Not sure if it was more cinnamon vs sugar cane idk the ratio, all three of us actually agreed on it even though our coffee taste is different. read more

Honestly the worst breakfast place I have ever been to! We ordered two grand breakfast & an open faced turkey dinner. My husband tried my turkey dinner & almost threw up because it was so sour like the meat had gone bad. The food was not cooked properly even our eggs were not done right they were still runny & cold. When we asked to speak to a manager he took 30 min to come see us & he seemed like he didn't care. I WILL SAY THE SERVER WAS AMAZING & she was very apologetic & said they have had a lot of complaints lately. So, lets get into it! First off, the ambiance is comfy and chill, patio area is nice! Our waitress wasn't as friendly as I hoped. There was a kid named Gustavo who was Super attentive and even got our drinks and checked in us. Even though he wasn't our server, I wished he was. Bravo Gustavo . Okay the food, I mean come on, it's breakfast. How do you mess up breakfast? Well, let me tell you how this place did just that!!! The michilada was way to thick, it needed another beer. The pancakes were bomb! But the rest of the plate was a disaster. Burnt hasbrowns ALL of it on the bottom (photo attached). The chorizo was also dried and overcooked (photo included). It didn't even mix well with the eggs. I didn't even finish my plate. Total price for breakfast for 2 people and 2 michiladas was $76 ($10 tip included) pretty outrageous for burnt ,and dry breakfast. Sometimes a place is popular because its close to home and feels familiar. I guess that's why this place is always packed, because its not for the breakfast. I've been passing by this restaurant for years and was always wanting to try it but just never found my way here. I saw within the last year they reported being under new management and then again recently a friend of mine really hyped this place up. I knew that I really needed to make the effort to give this spot a try. My review is more for the food and takeout experience as I wasn't able to dine in. I'll definitely report back once I can come to dine in but in the meantime I'm really happy I found a good local spot that is spot on for takeaway. Called ahead to place an order for pickup for an early lunch. I was impressed that they told me the wait time would only be about 10 minutes. My drive from my office to here was a little under and when I walked in my food was already ready, that's a good start. The business is very unassuming and from the outside doesn't look like much or at least is no frills. However upon opening the door I was impressed by home welcoming and fun the place looked. The inside had neon lights and when you turn the corner to the hostess stand you are transported to a lovely local diner like vibe with cozy booths and a fun bar top diner style counter. The inside is decorated to give you that small town comfort feel. Next time I'll definitely dine in. Staff were super nice and on top of things. When I walked up to the hostess booth I was greeted immediately and given my check to pay. The brought me back my change within a minute and I was good to leave with my food. The two staff I interacted with were very friendly. I was impressed. The food is a solid 5 for diner comfort food. American classics for breakfast and lunch you can't go wrong. I ordered a tuna melt and it was super good! The cheese was thick and the tuna fresh, loved the crunch from the celery. The bread was buttery and the perfect crunch for a melt. The French fries were on the thicker side which isn't usually my preference but they were super hot and fresh that it did make a good side. 5/5 for a stellar sandwich. Also pro tip they have the good ranch here :) loved that I asked the waitress when I called for two sides of ranch. Always risk asking for sauces over the phone when placing an order but sure enough they were in there, just as a I ordered. $17 for a hefty sandwich and fries, supporting local, well worth it and not a bad price. I was not expecting this place to be by the library and surrounded by Kaiser medical buildings. It's such an odd place and I even passed it by on accident. When we got out of our cars we saw several seniors headed in. We asked to sit on the patio to enjoy the cooler morning weather in Ventura. There were 2 other tables sat outside with us so it wasn't too busy. It was much more busy inside. They had a fall special menu which I appreciate. The menu is fairly large with something to appease everyone. I ordered the fall breakfast that had 2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon with a choice of pumpkin pancakes, apple and cinnamon French toast or a cinnamon roll. I chose the cinnamon roll. My eggs were cooked to perfection and I accidentally broke my yolks before realizing I didn't snap my photos. My cinnamon roll was served several minutes later and to be honest, it wasn't that great. The inside was very stale and dry tasting. It was rather disappointing that I ended my breakfast in that note. I appreciate that they did honor my Yelp check-in offer for 20% off. I showed it to the waitress at the very start of us ordering and she said yes they would accept it. Later she forgot about it and we had to remind her then she asked to see it again. Unfortunately, when I showed it to her at the beginning I marked "use it now" so it was gone and she couldn't see it again. But she did add it anyhow. On my last trip out to Ventura to run a marathon, I stopped in here for brunch on a Saturday. Honestly, this wasn't my first choice. However sometimes in life, good things that happen are not planned. My original spot fell through which brought me here. This restaurant was easy enough to find. It was off of Hill Rd near Telephone Rd, right next to the Hill Road Library. Although the place was pretty packed, they were able to seat me right away. Even though I was seated next to the restroom, my table was right next to the TV, so I got to watch the Las Palmas v. Barça match while I was there. After looking over the menu, I ordered the Hill St Grand Breakfast with home potatoes, sourdough toast, and coffee. The food was good and the service was good. The service was excellent, our waitress was so friendly and attentive. They have TVs and counter/bar seating as well as booths. The hot chocolate was so good, I love that they added marshmallows and whipped cream. They are quite generous with their serving sizes. The Mazapan pancakes were delicious. They weren't too sweet. My husband had picked 3 restaurants to go to for breakfast. So I reviewed on YELp and picked this one. Everyone is very friendly and the place is cute and comfortable. We were seated pretty fast and choice inside vs. outside. I'm sorry I didn't get our servers name, one of the girls said call her Marti. I had coffee and it was very good. Both my husband and I had the Chili Verde Omelette, you picked your side, fruit, hash browns, etc. We liked the meal but thought it was pricey ($19.99) compared to other cafes with Chili Verde. Very easy, quick service and super clean. It was the perfect place to stop between my son's soccer games. The staff was so nice. We completely took over the patio and we're so loud with boys throwing things jumping running and they seem totally unfazed. We had the cinnamon roll combo, Machaca & Eggs, and the Chile Verde Huevos Rancheros. Great size of servings and many options to choose from for breakfast and lunch. This the second time I've been here. I always give second chances. Unfortunately I won't be back. My friends and I were very unsatisfied. One of my friends had the chiliqueles on a dirty moldy wooden plater. She didn't touch it. She told the waitress and she said she would notify the cook. I ordered the Machaca.
