I started to come here more since I work at Kaiser. Food tastes good, portions can be good depending on what you get. Taco combination plate is a good value. The Shrimp tacos are $6.19 each and come with 3 shrimp each, don't feel like the value is there but they are tasty. Today, I was quite disappointed. I kindly asked for a "Few" more chips and the owner came out and said each taco only gets "2" chips. Being a regular and asking for a few extra chips shouldn't be that big of an issue, not like I asked for an order. read more

Finding good tasting value is harder in the 805, but places like taco shop give me hope! Nice sized burrito with a good amount of filling, but it all tastes so good it makes me want to eat 2 at a time (although I really shouldn't be doing that lol). Was working in the area so i stopped in to try a taco. Went with pastor in a flour tortilla, it's a good size taco for 5 bucks with a tip. They give you a few chips and grilled onions/jalapeno with it. I enjoyed the food here. I got 3 asada tacos, an al pastor burrito, a side of fries and Agua de Jamaica. The tacos were great it comes with salsa, grilled peppers and onions and lime. The French fries were hot and salted well which I really like. The burrito was delicious, it surprised me a little that the Al pastor still has its sweetness to it. I have had others that do not. The service was on point as well, greeted me and took my order quickly and accurately. Inside is small and not really meant for inside dining. We went to the taco shop on a random week night bc we wanted asada tortas. We also ordered birria tacos. The torta was an 8/10 and the birria tacos were a 6/10. There was no line when we walked in and we looked thru their menu to choose what to order. There are many options on their menu so I do plan on coming back to try other things. We also got a tamarindo agua fresca, which was a 7.5/10. It was pretty refreshing. We sat inside and waited for our food to be ready, which took about 15 mins. Cute little place! I haven't tried their food yet, so I can't say anything about that. But I love their frappes! My favorite frappe is their horchata frappe it tastes just like an horchata but better! It's sweater than a regular horchata, so it's definitely more of a dessert. I've also tried the mazapán frappe, the Ferrero Roche frappe and their flan. Everything is delicious, so I would love to try more items from their menu. Service is good, also this last time the girl taking my order forgot about my frappe and only made one out of the two I ordered. We wanted to pick up some quick Mexican food after we found our first choice closed for the day. The Taco Shop had very high ratings so we decided to give it a try. The shop is primarily takeout only and there are only three small tables inside. During our time in the restaurant, there was a steady stream of customers going in and out, picking up takeout orders. Pastor Torta ($13.41) - The bread used is a toasted sesame roll, which isn't the most fluffy, but still manages to cradle the food inside. The meat is a bit sweet and fruity and a bit spicy, but flavorwise very muted in comparison to most pastor/adobada I've had. The torta is not greasy at all and generally kind of dry. The meat is mixed with pineapples and it's tender, but dry. Feels like a "healthy" torta if you will. There's a bit of pico and thin slices of avocado, but those don't add enough moisture and creaminess to counteract the dry meat and bread. The torta comes with chips and a couple of wedges of lime. While eating, I futility squeezed the limes, desperate to add moisture to the torta, but instead they folded over and collapsed due to how bone-dry they were. (3/5) Burrito California, Asada ($13.41) - Considering they have Burrito San Diego on the menu, I assumed that one was the California burrito and that this one was the Mission-style one. If this is a Mission-style burrito, it's not very good. The asada here is sad and dry with no crisp, no fat, no grease. It's very tender and lean with no gristle whatsoever, and generally quite boring in texture. The burrito as a whole is dry, with the only thing contributing moisture sour cream and a bit of water from the shredded iceburg lettuce and tomatoes. The vegetables are crowded in the center of the burrito, so most bites are flavored with a tinge of watery sour cream. There are refried beans and rice, but they contribute minimally to the dish. (2/5) Overall the food at The Taco Shop is very much meh. I feel like it's only for people whose only prior experience with Mexican food is Chipotle, but I'd say even Chipotle has a bit more flavor in their meats. This was my first time coming to this place and although I wish I could give it 5 stars for me personally service is a great factor. The reason I am not giving it 5 stars is because as I mentioned it was my first time here and I felt that the front cashier was not very welcoming and seemed upset from something due to her tone. We decided to try a variety of things such as their taco sampler that comes with 10 tacos, their asada nachos, and a Mazapan Frappe. Every taco was delicious and had amazing flavors. I want to say they are handmade tortillas but I am not quite sure either way very delicious. I do wish though that the tacos were labeled so we could see which ones were which. The asada nachos were also perfect with enough portions of toppings such as guacamole, sour cream, and jalapeños. I really enjoyed the cheese on them as well! The Mazapan frappe was something I had never had someone else and it did not disappoint. It had bits of Mazapán to enjoy. This is also not really a sit down place to eat due to their very limited seating and being right next to someone which is why I feel a lot of people place pick up orders. It is very crowded and a bit awkward to ask the person at the other table excuse me every time you have to move. When I was there most people would come in and just grab their food. I do think their taco and nacho prices are fair due to the portion and quality, but their frappes are a bit pricery for them being about $7.23. A small locally owned business with a delicious menu! The food was fresh and tasty, plus the owner is so nice. I saw him bringing food with another customer to their car, along with pointing out there's a cash discount. It takes some time since it's made to order but if it was nearby, I'd definitely eat here more often. I ordered an asada torta and subbed the chips with fries. It was a good size and the fries reminded me of McDonald's. I'd assume their California burrito is probably really good with fries like this. I wasn't prepared for the professional feel of The Taco Shops (TTS) kitchen--wish I had pictures. They appear to take their work very serious. On our journey back south from Solvang we stumbled across this gem located in Ventura. We were looking for a good breakfast burrito on our way home. I have to have refried beans on my breakfast burritos. We must have found half a dozen taco shops before TTS that either only had black beans or didn't say they had refried beans on their menus. Then we found the trifecta! The TTS breakfast burrito. This burrito is made with fresh made scrambled eggs, potatoes, cheese, sausage, bacon, and chorizo !!! I added my refried beans of course . Each of our burritos came with a perfect portion of fresh tortilla chips and the choice of either mild or hot salsa. The only foul I'm calling is the use of french fries for potatoes. First time here. Called ahead to see if they had habanero salsa, (usually won't go someplace if they don't have it) they did, so I wanted to try it. I'm glad I did, but not for the reason of the habanero salsa (it's not that good, and they make you pay $3.12 for 4oz if it... NOT worth it) The green salsa is really good though and I'd just use that next time and save the 3 bucks. Bought a bean, cheese and rice burrito. It was a very nice size for the price. Very filling. I had the cochinita pibil tacos. No pickled jalapeños, add cilantro. The taco were very full. 2 tacos was enough for me. They use fresh made corn tortillas, and that really elevated these tacos a ton. They are pricey bought individually, but definitely good. Both orders came with a small handful of tortilla chips, which was a nice extra touch. The front end cashier was a very pleasant and helpful young man. The cook even came out from behind the counter to answer questions I had. The place was clean and inviting. Not too much indoor seating, but as a take out order it was perfect. Do not sleep on this tacos shop. Ordered the Quesabirria tacos, ceviche, and Fish Tacos and they were all extremely delicious. The tortillas are a good size and you can tell they're homemade. The quesabirria tacos came with 3. The fish with 2. The consomé is delicious as well and you can tell these folks take pride in their food. Not to mention the horchata which is so good! To say "they know what they're doing", is an understatement. THEYVE MASTERED IT I've never eaten here in person and have only ever DoorDashed them. First off, they have the most thoughtful and secure way of wrapping food for deliveries. No spilling, no oils coming through, no moved around food - just PERFECT they have phenomenal guac and chips. My ultimate favorite is the SURF N TURF BURRITO. This is what dreams are made of. Any pain or stress I have literally leaves my body when I have this burrito. The surf n turf is a must have. I've loved the Taco Shop since their Oxnard location and I am really happy they made their way to Ventura as this location is the most convenient for me and really makes equally as stellar food as their original site. I love the taco shop because it's classic delicious Mexican food but elevated slightly that I wouldn't call it a divey hole in the wall joint. I feel like this place is more a happy neutral where you get fresh & delicious Mexican food without it being too fatty or greasy. But it doesn't lose that down home cooking and love that makes Mexican food taste like a homemade family supper. Trust me just come and you'll see what I'm saying. The food here is exceptional. My go to is usually their green chicken enchiladas as they are super tasty and I like the sauce. It's mild enough for me but still packs good flavor. However, today I was feeling adventurous and got the $19 surf and turf burrito. A lot of places simply couldn't execute this dish which is why I'm sometimes weary to order it at places but knowing how good the food usual is here I was willing to splurge and go for it. I am so glad I did because so far this has been the best shrimp & asada burrito I've found in the 805 yet! You get your moneys worth because no joke every bite I had I got a jump bite of shrimp. That's unheard of and truly I don't know how they make money off of this because the seafood and proteins are beyond generous. I'm not complaining! Just was shocked in a good way. Pro tip you have to get a side of their spicy creamy seafood sauce to dip the burrito in, that made this dish a 10/10! One of the better burritos I've had in Ventura in a long time. They have some good assortments of fresh juices and sodas here that it's easy to get a drink on the run. I grabbed a jamica which was flavorful and refreshing. I little on the pricey side but a good splurge when I already went all out with the burrito so figured why not? The staff here are super friendly and nice. When I call in an order the gentlemen that answers is always super sweet and clear. He speaks both Spanish and English. He makes you feel appreciated even over the phone and he always gets my order correct. Inside the gal that rang me up on the register was equally as nice. Good people work here. Only thing worth noting is this spot is super small inside. Normally your only option is to get the food to go which I know isn't everyone's favorite. I get it but this place is so tiny they really can only accommodate like three small tables and with the foot traffic you really wouldn't want much more inside here. I've accepted if you want good food sometimes you have to be willing to get it to go. That's okay by me as long as you know before coming in. We planned on dining in for breakfast but quickly realized that it's an order and take out type of location. We ordered: TTS Torta is made with an artisan sesame bread (just realized they all are), beans, breaded pork, homemade potatoes, grilled onions, grilled jalapeños, cheese and avocado. This sandwich was gigantic ! But honestly I barely got through the first half it was so much but great for sharing. It was good but not great for me. Lacking a bit of flavor even with the green sauce . Taco Shop has been on rotation for us when we get takeout. It's a really solid option for authentic tasting Mexican food. My go to has been the chicken tacos dorados. They're nice and crunchy and have plenty of filling. They dress them up with lettuce, tomato, red onion, queso fresco, avocado, and a chipotle crema. Add a bit of their green salsa and voila. So delicious! I recently also tried their tacos and enjoyed them. They come in handmade yellow corn tortillas. I got an asada taco and a carnitas taco. Both meats are really flavorful and good quality meat. The order comes with a side of grilled onions, grilled jalapeño, and tortilla chips. Love the grilled onions. Wish more places served their tacos this way. We have also tried their nachos, burrito, and asada torta. All good options. I have yet to try their guisados but they look great. As for their agua fresca, get the strawberry horchata and thank me later. My main dislikes are the rice and beans. I've tried them a couple of times in hopes that they'll get better and they don't. They're both super bland and lack flavor. I wouldn't waste my money on getting a side of them. They're kinda pricey too for an add on. I also don't know why their torta bread has sesame seeds. Gives me burger vibes which don't belong in a torta. The torta would be great if it was in better quality and traditional bread. I also was disappointed when ordering through DoorDash or online because regardless of the size of the order, I've only gotten 1 container of red and green salsa. Definitely not enough. Don't be stingy! So now I order for pickup and ask for more salsa when I get my order. Location is small but always clean. The menu is large, but I appreciate the different proteins to choose from. breakfast burrito: A tad on the smaller side. But it's biggest problem was the ratio of meat to everything else. It has bacon, sausage and chorizo - it's too much. I think you can do without one of them. In addition, they use french fries instead of potatoes - a first for me. Since they use fries, I would get rid of the bacon, since you have the crunch texture from the fries. san diego burrito: This was a larger burrito.
