Incredible meal at The Tavern tonight. They currently have a play on a Reuben as a special and it is drool worthy. Wagyu beef pastrami, smoked cheddar, of course kraut and secret sauce but then you get hints of jalepeño and everything season on the most perfectly crispy marbled Rye. Wow. Sooo good. And if you haven't tried their Brussels sprouts, you are missing out. Instead of the typical bacon and Brussels.. it has teriyaki and jalapeño and char. Omg the char. You must try this local Lakewood spot. read more

I love this place. Great location, nice patio, excellent service. Everything I've had is delicious (pork chop, wings, lettuce wraps). Their Ranch Waters are served in the topo chico bottles which is awesome. And a Jäger special on Sundays! Plenty of TVs, Sunday Ticket, and they'll put game sound on too! We came in on a Wednesday right at last call. The service was great and we got a quick round in before close. However, one of the "investors" wives came in with her friends after last call and threatened the bartender with her status as an "investors wife" if he didn't serve her and her friends another round. It was really off putting to see. I hope that's not how the staff is usually treated by the investors and their spouses. read more

My go to spot used to go every Tuesday and Thursday but not go on saturdays and the people here are always so friendly and the atmosphere is very chill, the food here is superb, you need to try the Reuben or the "long-walk" chicken sandwich neither will disappoint, if you sit at the bar Jordan or Roger always make sure you're taken care of, love this place !! read more

Incredible. Very chill atmosphere. Excellent bartenders. A fine cocktail. I recommend the chips and salsa with queso to start. Warm salsa and fresh queso with a bit of a kick. The chips are light, thin and fresh. Delicate but strong enough to dip without snapping. For lunch we had the steak frites (just $19 on Saturday...that's a hell of a deal). The steak was medium rare, sous vide for tenderness and perfectly seasoned. A steak that tastes like a steak. The frites were crisp and salty, just as they should be. A substantial salad with fresh greens, tomatoes, radish, cheese and croutons arrives in a metal bowl. The blue cheese dressing was perfect. We also had the special, Korean style bbq pork with fried rice. The pork was juicy. Cooked on the bone and sliced with sticky Korean bbq sauce brushed on top. The bone is presented on the plate with bits of meat and sauce to nibble off. There's something about the salty sweetness of meat on the bone. The fried rice was delicious. Onions, radish, egg, and a few other ingredients I cannot recall. Damn it was good. Also at 19 bucks, a total bargain. I took half of it home and it made an excellent early supper. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. You deserve a good meal and tasty drink. read more

We've been eager to try Hillside Tavern, as we've seen how busy it is and read the reviews. We started off with onion rings and cheese fries: the onion rings were okay but super greasy. My daughter's hands were wet. The cheese fries were tasty but I could not get away from the seasoning on the fries. A huge platter came with one tiny ranch. By the time we got more the fries were cold. We ordered other meals that came with fries and it was just more seasoning! Again, couldn't get away from it. I'd recommend lightening that or eliminating the seasoning all together. Salt on salt on salt. By the time our food arrived 3/5 of us felt sick. The grease! The salt! The special was a 10oz baby back rib and it was covered in a Franks red hot sauce vs bbq sauce. No bueno. I love supporting local restaurants and also want to give my honest opinion. Dont burden them with your service at 8pm on a Sunday. They are ready to close & would rather leave you unattended so long, you leave. We even got up and moved to the bar only for the bartender to completely ignore us. Was it crowded? 100% no! Sad it's our neighborhood bar & the service has always been poor. Went there with a large group on a Sunday afternoon. Most of my friends (and I) got the fish and chips. The breading inside was on the soggy side and not crispy at all. I wasn't a fan of the bland crust. The fries were way over seasoned. I got a cocktail to go with it. For the prIce, I was astounded. The fish and chips were definitely not worth the $13.50. There were 2 pieces of fish and French fries in the basket, no other sides (such as cole slaw). The cocktail ran me $11. Come on, this is a pub! To pay $31 (tax and tip added) for a lunch with one drink is highway robbery. I used to live in Boston and this was on par with Boston prices. DIsappointing for the caliber of food and the slow service we received. Won't be going back. read more

My husband and I have been going here for the last two years, but around summer 2022 the wait staff changed and we've noticed that since then, the service has gotten significantly worse. The bartenders are disengaged and not attentive. Hillside used to have more of a neighborhood "Cheers" vibe but now we feel like a number even when it isn't busy. Food is still good, but it feels as though the quality has suffered since the change as well. read more

This place is new, so I expect it to get better with time. But for now, don't expect speedy or kind service from anyone there. The pimento cheese shared plate was good, but $7.50 for 10 fried saltines and a tiny scoop of pimento cheese is insulting. (I had hoped the photos I had seen here were a shared portion, not the entire dish. I was wrong.) It pains me to say it, but don't get the onion rings! The batter is so thick and heavy that it's almost like pizza dough, and it's not crispy or in any way pleasant. Plus the herb mix in the batter is overpowering, and it just doesn't taste right in an onion ring. I have never left an onion ring untouched until I had these. :( The cheeseburger was delicious. But I can get a delicious burger, better atmosphere and better accompaniments a lot of places. read more

That may be the best fried bologna sandwich I've had! (Sorry mom, but it was just different.) How does that saying go? Good things come to those who wait! That's it. This place was well worth waiting for. Had the good fortune of going on their first night/soft opening. Of course there was a bit of a backup in the kitchen, but the place was pretty packed and everything came out wonderful and just as ordered. This place has a great atmosphere, with a great selection of drinks. I'm not a beer drinker, so can't comment on something I know nothing about, but the food, service, atmosphere were all excellent. Those kangaroo martinis were the bomb. The menu is a little outside your typical bar food, but still casual and delicious! Love the layout inside. It has a great feel. I came for the patty melt because of an article i read.. The patty itself would melt in your mouth amazingly but it was like half the size of the bread that was holding it, not a good ratio. I would recommend 2 or 3 of those patties on that sandwich. The flavor was good but way too sour from all the pickled pepperoncini. So this needs some work, not worth driving for an hour one way. lol. We also got the bologna sandwich which was ridiculously good, nothing would i change on it! This is probably a top ten sandwich in DFW. Next we had the buffalo wings which were super crispy and juicy, very impressive but the flavor options were very minimal. I have not tried the cocktails but they did appear to be right down my alley. read more

The smoked bologna sandwich is a work of Art in its own right. Every ingredient chosen for it flatters the dish as a whole. Also, I love that they put chips in it! It's one of my favorite things to do to a sandwich in the first place. And, it comes with home made onion rings that are made in house. I've never seen or tasted onion rings like them before and they're perfect- not soggy or greasy, and very crunchy. They're hand made at the restaurant daily. This place is on my list for my monthly indulgence. Highly recommend! read more

I was there tonight ( 12/26 ) for a late night drink and to catch the final minutes of the Portland vs Utah game. Bartender was in a terrible mood, not sure what happened before I arrived but the bartender was being rude to a patreon, complaining about not having enough sleep and bitching about retirement ( all weird considering his chosen profession ) who was trying to be friendly. I've been to this place 3 times and twice I've had terrible service...both times related to bartenders. Fuck this place! Don't be a bartender if you going to complain about not having enough sleep. read more

We first ordered the pimento cheese as an appetizer - the crackers that accompanied it were totally inedible due to the oversalted seasoning. Next the fries that came with the infamous bologna sandwich were perhaps the saltiest item I've ever put in my mouth and they were also totally inedible. So the big question - Is Hillside Tavern deliberately oversalting food so that patrons will order more drinks? We visited Saturday 1/4, I had the Bay of Pigs sandwich, and my boyfriend had the bologna sandwich and a small salad. They were really good. Server Caroline was lukewarm and did not smile. Came in for dinner tonight and managed to snag a spot at the bar. From the get go the service was great. It's hard to judge a place in their first few weeks of operation but I think this place will be around for a while. Great wine selection and cocktail menu. My critiques are very minimal but mainly have to do with portion size. We had the lettuce wraps, fried chicken sandwich, and the bread pudding. First of all the flavors were great across the board. We have been frequent flyers at Rapscallion and these guys know how to put out great food. Only small complaint was the portion of chicken on the lettuce wraps and portion of bread pudding. The price probably fits the portion size but I would spend an extra few dollars for a little more on each dish. Maybe I'm just a fat ass but hey, if it's good you want more. Anyway, super excited to have a spot like this in Lakewood. Looking forward to our next visit. read more

I'd never typically order a cold sandwich for dinner but the server recommended the ham and cheese and WOW it was amazing. Hillside Tavern is in a convenient spot and they've done a great job of making it feel more like it's on Lower Greenville than in a strip mall. So many things on the menu sounded delicious, will definitely be back to try more! read more

We went for dinner last night and it was fantastic! Jordon, Pedro and Matt were very helpful and made great recommendations. The chicken bites were the best we have ever had, the bacon on the wedge was unique and amazing, the Rueben was life changing! The beer selection was great. Next time we hope to arrive before the bread pudding is sold out, that has got to be delicious as well. We will be back soon! read more

First time here, been wanting to try for while. Sat near the bar. One of the worst first impressions I have had in a while, a male waiter bussing a table and putting his fingers in full drink glasses. Then, not washing his hands, prepares our waters. We had to ask him to come over so we could place an appetizer and our initial drink order. He proceeds to constantly touch his nose, no hand washing. We order and wait about 25 minutes for our food. My "Palmetto Cheese" toast comes out with delicious toppings. I take a few bites and do not taste the Palmetto cheese. Push back all the ingredients and there is no Palmetto cheese at all!! The main ingredient is missing. Never had that happened! Looked around for our waiter, no where to be seen. After 10 minutes, we asked the bartender (that had zero customers and standing watching TV) turned around and looked at us like we were crazy. She should of walked the 5 feet over to our table and asked what we needed. Our waiter finally shows up with the table beside us food. We say "excuse me", Twice. He walks back to the kitchen. The bartender looks at us and saw the waiter walk off. She just stood there. The waiter comes out 5 minutes later and heard our "Excuse Me" and after telling him the plate was missing the main ingredient he doesn't say sorry but a comment "I guess it's not Palmetto Cheese Toast then". WTF? Then he takes the plate away and brings out a new one, everyone else is done. Ended up being good. No visit from the manager to apologize, no apology from the waiter. Item was left on check. For a $78 plus tip lunch they should of done something. Not coming back. read more

Was okay. Had the fish and chips, batter a bit on the heavy greasy side. Fish inside was cooked properly. No condiments on the table had to get up to ask for them. Sat outside good. I would have to say service needs to improve a bit. Check on your patrons right after you serve them. Should not have to get up to get condiments so you can start eating your food. Also would not order the fish and chips again. May or may not be back. I really hope it gets better. Would like to have it as another option for eating or drinking. Growing up in New Jersey; Everyone knows of the bar down the block that is the neighborhood institution. The kind of bar where you see old friends, run into co-workers, or had that terrible blind date that you won't forget. Hillside is pub food meets neighborhood social. Elevated menu items make it more than just "pub food" yet simple enough that anyone could find their fan favorite. Accommodated with superb service and unique wine specials, how can you not love this place! Not trying to over complicate things, we stuck to the fish and chips (sub giant fricken onion rings) and a burger and fries. We simply figured this is an essential for any pub and boy did they not disappoint. Can we take a moment to discuss the French Fries... crispy, hot, seasoned, sweet, salty, herby, spice goodness! Ok rant over... finally let's talk a out value for money. Most apps under 10. Entrees in the teens and bottles of wine below $50. Was very excited to go here and it definitely has a cool vibe. Food was very overpriced and underwhelming- got 6 chicken wings with two pieces of celery for $11 and paltry chicken/lettuce wraps for $8.5. Not much flavor to either of them. Sauces came out in a pre-packaged plastic container. Didn't stick around for the main course even though we'd heard the burger was good. Hoping for more and maybe it will change a bit. read more

Food is incredible and the atmosphere is very trendy, but casual. I've had the wings, pimento cheese sandwich, cheese board, burger, onion rings, and more...never been disappointed. Drinks are fun and creative. Servers and bartenders are great and the manager always says hello. And they're open for brunch now, too! read more
