I see that my original review is nine years old so it is time for an update. The first time we went, the food was a "wow." We loved it and I gave it 5 stars and so looked forward to returning. This time, however, the experience was a bit of a disappointment. My ratings for this experience in July 2026: Service: 5/5 Ambience: 4/5 Food: 3/5, which is generous. I could easily go 2 stars. Let me start with the positives. Our server, Madeline, was excellent. She was personable and efficient. She missed on her recommendation but I think that was more the kitchen than her. She was there when we needed her without being overbearing. She labeled our take home boxes so we knew what was inside. Nice touch. The ambience is upscale without being pretentious. There was one a group across the restaurant that was so loud that my wife and I had some difficulty conversing, but I understand that is not something the restaurant can control. The restaurant was nearly full on a Friday when we entered about 7pm and when we left there was a long line of people waiting for a table, so I guess the restaurant is doing something right. What the restaurant can control is the food, and it was not up to par. We started with a chopped romaine salad, which is basically a Caesar. It had too many spoiled (wilted or brown) pieces of lettuce and was way overdressed. Quality control needs to improve. The kid wanted pasta as usual but their offering was with pesto and that was a no-go so Madeline had the kitchen do an off menu pasta with red sauce. I appreciate the gesture. The sauce was not acidic but the pasta was al dente and the kid was not used to that, so she did not really like it. Not the restaurant's fault on that one. The wife had the daily special, short rib stroganoff, and said it had no flavor. I did not try it but I assume the meat was not seasoned. I had the chicken parm with spaghetti from the "classics" portion of the menu. I was not impressed. I expected the spaghetti to be on the side but it was on top. The chicken had a strong burned flavor so I wondered if the spaghetti was on top to cover the burn? My pasta was al dente which was fine with me but overall the dish lacked flavor except for a burnt taste. I would not order it again. Overall, all our dishes missed the mark in one way or another. No one enjoyed their food. Maybe we ordered incorrectly, although you would think that ordering the daily special and a "classic" would be safe. Maybe the kitchen had an off night when it was so busy. The demand for a table was at variance with the quality of the food, which was average at best. At least the drinks were good. read more

It reminds me of a lot of places when I grew up. Kinda dark not to loud. The server took our order and I hadn't decide what else to get besides the wedge. So he gave us a few minutes and I decided to do soup and wedge. He had everyone's order just not soup. The kids got butter noodles with Parmesan . When they came out they were swimming in butter almost like soup. We had to drain off all the butter thought the kids would get sick. My daughter and husband got the gem salad and a sandwich to split. My son-in law got soup also so waiter brought their soup and gem salad out . A little later he brought my soup and Son in law order a wedge so he got him that and their sandwich . He never brought my wedge that I had order so everyone done and I am getting my wedge salad. My wedge was not good at all dressing was runny . Anyway very disappointed with service and food and when we left I told hostess thank you but she was too busy on her phone to acknowledge me. Neighborhood Services is a great spot for a nice dinner out. If you haven't been, you need to visit this Dallas staple! Every time I've been to this location, I've had a fantastic experience. The ambiance works perfectly for either a date night or a work dinner, and our waiter even shared stories about local celebrities who frequent the restaurant, which added a fun touch to the evening. To start, our table shared the meatballs (7 to an order) and half a dozen oysters both were excellent if that's your kind of appetizer. I've ordered the Parmesan-crusted sole for my entrée on my last two visits, as it's a frequently featured daily special, and it never disappoints. The crispy Parmesan crust paired with fresh lemon on top absolutely hits the spot. We couldn't decide on dessert because there were too many great options, so our waiter convinced us to go with the "dessert bomb," where they bring out one of everything. It was definitely more than we needed, but I was very happy with the decision. Let me start by saying I'm a hermit. I work at home. I adore my husband and children and being cozy in our house. It takes a movement of God for me to dress up and go out because my everyday is lovely. That said, my husband declared that he'd made reservations at Neighborhood Services to celebrate our anniversary. "Okaaaayyy," I smiled, intrigued, and a bit nervous. Good food attracts us to a place; thoughtful and welcoming staff make us loyal. And this hermit is willing to crawl out of my happy little cottage again and again for Neighborhood Services. Rhea, the General Manager, greeted us at the door and welcomed us with a lovely "Happy Anniversary!" and led us to a cozy booth. I am pretty shy upon entering new places, but her presence was like a deep exhale. During the evening, Rhea offered spot-on wine pairings--like, they were ridiculously good and perfect complements--that truly elevated our meal. Next, our server, Mimo managed to be this hard-to-balance combination of attentive and subtle. We hardly needed a menu because of his cool expertise. He anticipated our needs and gave stellar recommendations with warmth and attention to what we liked, and yet he gave us plenty of room to just spend time on our date. Excellent service. We had an extra treat of being served some courses by Chef Davidson. I adored chatting with him as he shared the story behind a given dish, like the secret ingredient in the irresistible garlic bread (besides childhood nostalgia) or the decadent cheese included in the sumptuous Mac and cheese. Chef's explainers made each bite that much more delectable. Some food highlights for us: The oysters we devoured were fresh and slightly briny. If you enjoy raw oysters, you will love these. My husband (who does not choose veggies on a menu, ever) and I both enjoyed the crispy asparagus with dill sauce. I CANNOT get that buttery, salty good garlic bread off my mind. I cannot believe how obsessed I am about the bread. We enjoyed the Italian offerings of arancini and Caprese salad, too. And that garlic bread.... Hubby had the filet, which I stole a bite of. He smiled the whole way through it, and I can see why: it was tender, flavorful, toothsome. I had the haddock, which was gently flaky except around its brown-butter crisped edges. I wish there were more; it was delish. The mac and cheese was tangy and unctuous, and the Brussels sprouts (which my husband also enjoyed), smoky and meaty. At the end of our night, Jordan, the valet, was just as kind and celebratory (and quick) when we went to retrieve our car as everyone else we encountered. Ambience and service was very good. Of the 4 meals we had, three of us loved our meals and one did not like theirs (chicken Piccata). The presentation for all the meals was awesome, just seems that the chicken (for the piccata) was not pounded and was quite dry. After deliberating our dining prospects one night, I offered to my better half that we try Neighborhood Services, a joint that's been around for well over a decade. For some reason, I'd never been there (or so I thought), and, that night, I was in the mood to wander off our beaten path of familiar chow houses. My better half assured me that we had indeed been there, some years previous. While I was sure she was right, I couldn't remember that visit. My ability to recall the faintest remembrance was akin to staring into a proverbial black hole. This fact made me a tad nervous...since my lapse in memory of a past event normally meant that I wasn't impressed with the outing and had decided to cross the encounter off the list for some reason. Before I could backtrack, she made the reservation and told me, in no uncertain terms, that we were going. But to be truthful, based on the fact that my memory had gone AWOL of that long ago visit, I wasn't expecting much. Our reservation at Neighborhood Services was for 7:30 pm on a mid-week night, and the joint was packed and noisy. Immediately, I mentally subtracted some points. Crowded and noisy isn't my cup of Oolong tea. But the hostess said she had a booth for us, which quickly caused me to cancel the previous subtraction. After being seated, our waiter was quick on the scene and snapped up our drink orders. Taking a look at the menu, it was decidedly American fare, but offered some twists and turns in what one might find in another restaurant that offers so-called American selections. For some reason, today's daily plate of meatloaf caught my attention. I usually recoil from any thought of ordering comfort foods or a traditional home-cooking style of dish. But, it did push me towards my ultimate pick of chicken piccata, preceded by a simple salad of greens. While I'm no fan of eating in noisy and crowded restaurants, the food rose above my small discomfort. For some reason, the simple, but tasty dish of chicken piccata left an indelible mark in my memory. I have no idea why my memory of my first visit to Neighborhood Services went missing. Maybe it was a longer than expected wait. Perhaps it was due to some fellow diners who had a bit too much too drink. But this trip has been firmly placed in the memory banks. read more

Neighborhood Services is wildly popular in the Dallas area. They're a part of a restaurant group that includes Montlake Cut and Town Hearth. This is my least favorite of the group by a large margin. Don't get me wrong, nothing is bad. .. just not what I was expecting considering the reputation. The "CFS" or Country Fried Steak is one of their signature dishes. It's made with wagyu beef. I can't say my pallet was sophisticated enough to discern the difference. I found it to be a little greasy, yet dry. .. could've used a bit more seasoning too. The Crispy Shrimp were pretty good, but standard. The hand pie was exceptional. I'd go back just for dessert. Service could've been more attentive, though not rude. I'd revisit if someone really wanted to go. I'd stick to appetizers, cocktails, and desserts though. read more

I was in town visiting friends who highly recommended dinner here. We had another friend from out of town visiting as well and we decided to try it. We were greeted well and seated at a very comfortable big booth. Our traditional drink of choice is an old fashioned and we were very happy to get a high quality one here. This was unexpected because this is not a "pizza place". But it was just the right amount of flavor, light chewiness, airiness in the dough, and tasty blend of toppings. 3. The fried shrimp are good. Batter is good and not overwhelming. 4. Brussels sprouts are good. A little too toasty but still in the good range, and very tasty. 5. Server was very friendly and enthusiastic. Thumbs down: 1. Came here for a Thursday night dinner with a friend and it was packed! We had to change our reservation size so had a bit of a wait for a table, but lots of space to catch up by the bar area. Once we were seated, our server was super friendly and attentive and gave lots of good recommendations. We shared the Crispy Asparagus, which was lightly fried and yummy. I then had the Caramelized Scallops without the bacon. The scallops were a little too oily, but the polenta was a nice touch. The dish was relatively standard, but I still enjoyed it. For dessert we shared the Butterscotch Pots de Creme which was super sweet but also addicting. NHS has long been on our rotation. We used to eat at the Preston/Royal location weekly for years. Went to the original Lovers Ln location tonight for my birthday. Pains me to say it was a big disappointment. Prices have doubled like many places. But the quality has slipped dramatically. The schnitzel was1/2 the size it used to be and twice the price. Plus it was over fried. The Thursday pot pie special was not special in the least. Wasn't bad but not much better than Stouffer's. Service was wonderful as always, but did find it telling that neither the server nor the host asked how our meal was. I think they know what the answer would be. read more

Mediocre food at best. Fish tartar sauce was not much more than mayonnaise. The malt vinegar was weak cheap stuff. The burger was raw in the middle and lacked any taste. The meatballs at least had some spice on them, but basically odd tasting. We had a few other things, but nothing to go back for. Wine is marked up 300% so our $50 bottle of wine was $150. There was a 2 year old kid that was all over the place at the next table. I like kids, so it was a positive. Service was good. First of all I would like to say that my problem is specifically with this Neighborhood Services as we have enjoyed other locations and Montlake Cut many times without being disappointed. I advice you to stay clear of this specific restaurant and his manager Alex Gutierrez. This experience was not only disappointing but has me thinking of filing charges against the manager. We had a 9:30pm reservation for 4 and got to the restaurant at 9:10, to which we were told that they were running behind so it would take a little more time so we proceeded to sit at the bar and have a cocktail to wait for our table. By 9:45 a group of 3 that were waiting before us at the bar got sat down so we were sure that we were next. By 9:50 another group of 4 entered the restaurant and at 9:55 they were sat down. I approached the hostess table and asked a young man to get the manager because I wanted to complain about the fact that they sat down a group that came a lot later than us. This person said he was the manager and asked me what he could do for us and I told him that we wanted to sit down and explained the whole situation. By this time the hostess came to us and said she sat them down because they had a 9:15 and I said, I understand that but they weren't there until 9:50 so in any case they would have lost their reservation, to which the manager got angry and moved himself as to be in between me and the hostess and started to move forward as to try to challenge me physically to which my wife stepped in and asked him to step back. We immediately closed our bar tab and left. While the bartender was closing our account another couple came to us and said the manager had treated them really bad and that they would never return. Neighborhood Services is a small, quaint restaurant with some of the best food I've ever had in Dallas. My boyfriend and I went there on a Thursday night and I started off our visit with a cosmopolitan from the bar, delicious and potent however not too strong! I tried some of my boyfriends Sauvignon Blanc and it surprised me how good it was so I got a glass of that as well! From there we sat down at our table and our incredible waiter Marcus greeted us with enthusiasm and professionalism. We started off with the meatballs, fried asparagus, and brisket nachos. All of our starters were delicious but the brisket nachos were my #1, I need to come back for another order because I've been craving them since I left! My boyfriend and I split the wedge and it came in nicely sized portions for both of us, sometimes wedges can be on the smaller side but this was more than enough. I'm glad we split this but it could be a great meal for someone who's looking for something a little lighter or is just craving a salad! The main portion came out and my pork chop was DELICIOUS. Hands down the best pork chop I've ever had in my life. It was juicy, tender, had incredible flavor and it made for a wonderful lunch the next day as it's HUGE! We got sides of Mac and cheese and asparagus (you can never have too much) and again everything was exquisite. Dessert was something we looked forward to even after we were full from our starters and main course and it did not disappoint. My husband and I went to Neighborhood Services and had an amazing experience. The GM was so kind and checked in on us during dinner. I ate the hand made noodles with lobster and my husband ate the short rib enchiladas. They were so delicious and can't wait to go back. Very crowded on the weekend nights! The place is small and tightly packed. Tip: Always listen to the specials! The specials are what makes this restaurant fabulous. Upon first glancing at the menu I wasn't terribly impressed BUT after our lovely server told us about the specials I was excited. If you like Cesar salads, they have one of the best I've eaten in Dallas. All four of us had the special fish dishes. Everyone was 100% satisfied! We came for my wife's bday and our 3 young children and the presence of children was made very clear was not something welcomed in any measure. We were asked repeatedly to move out of the way and perhaps sit at the bar with a baby carrier and toddler, while our table was prepared. Obviously not family friendly. We went to have the double cut chicken parmigiana Tuesday special. I asked the waiter specifically how the chicken Parmigiana was prepared and what it came with. The waiter said it came with a little salad they put on top of the chicken but didn't mention the dish came with a pasta. I told him to put the salad on the side and I specifically would have told him to make sure the pasta is on the side too. When it came out it wasn't hot and the chicken was lying on top of the pasta with red sauce which made the entire breading on bottom soggy. Totally annoying. Also because there was no way to know if the chicken came with pasta we ordered a pasta special called "lemon pasta." You shouldn't get that, it was terrible. It smelled like hot trash and the sauce seemed like it needed a lot more work. I told the waiter I was pissed about the food and how I asked him directly about the preparation to avoid the soggy fried chicken. He messed up. They took the pasta dish off the bill but I felt bad about having them take the chicken off the bill too. I didn't want to throw the waiter under the bus with the manager but in the days since the experience has gotten under my skin. If you really love food and are particular about your tastes, skip this restaurant. This place is probably just a pretty place to grab drinks. Don't count on anything exceptional. My wife made a reservation and took me here for my birthday since it's so close to home and we always here so much about it from other Yelp Elite. We really wanted to like this place, and I had high hopes for a new spot close to home instead going to Hillstone all the time. Unfortunately, we really didn't have a great experience here. Even though we came before it was really busy and during the middle of the week, were seated way in the back corner by the kitchen by ourselves while the rest of the restaurant was seated more prominently in the front. Furthermore, our waitress hardly came by and never looked our way when I tried to flag her down. I had to ask her for utensils and even had to ask where the bread was that we saw other tables being served. We were pretty much isolated on our own for most of the meal even though the wait staff come out of that kitchen door all evening. Strange. My teenage kids were very embarrassed and we felt really out of place. I don't understand what happened. I guess we don't fit the desired demographic. It was a horrible dining experience and really ruined the mood. If you don't really want people like us eating there, I get the message. read more

Went here on a double date a few weeks ago and it was fabulous! I had been meaning to check this place out for awhile bc so many of my friends had raved about it. It did not disappoint! We were sat in a comfy booth and ordered cocktails. I ordered a dirty martini which was amazing and then we ordered the fried shrimp, meatballs, and a few salads. The fried shrimp was the winner it's a definite must if you like shrimp! We then ordered entrees - I ordered the chicken tortilla soup, my hubby ordered the fish and chips which were so good! Our friends ordered the salmon and the special of the day. Everything was so fresh and delicious... dessert was next level.
