The food is not authentic Indian cuisine at all. We ordered Mutton Biryani, Butter Chicken, Butter Naan, and Tandoori Chicken. The biryani didn't taste like biryani, had very little mutton, and the portion was extremely small for the price especially compared to other Indian restaurants. The Butter Chicken didn't resemble butter chicken in flavor; it tasted more like chicken mixed with ketchup. The Butter Naan had no butter, and the Tandoori Chicken didn't taste anything like proper tandoori. Portions across all dishes were very small for what they charge. The place also didn't have a restaurant atmosphere everything was served on disposable paper plates with plastic cutlery. Service was minimal. The space was clean, but it didn't feel like a dine in restaurant. Overall, I had zero satisfaction with the taste, authenticity, or portion sizes. Based on this experience, they should not call this Indian cuisine. read more

We had such a great experience here. The woman working was part of the family of owners. She was so welcoming and helpful in our decisions of what to get. We were semi-familiar with Indian food but haven't had for years. The portions were plentiful and everything was delicious ! The chef came out and made sure we loved everything. Himalaya opened in the spot where TacoLoco was previously. I am always open to good Indian food and decided it would be our Friday night dinner. We went for carryout and it only took about 15 minutes for it to be ready. We ordered Chicken Tikka Masala, Allo Gobi and Daal Tadka with an order of Naan. They included a large portion of rice for each entrée. We actually cooked our own basmati rice and were glad we did because they did not provide good fragrant rice. We saved it and made fried rice later. We wanted to like this better than we did, especially considering the rave reviews. We found it bland in general. As a matter of full disclosure, when I order for the two of us, I cannot choose spicy. In this case I ordered mild so that "you-know-who" can eat it. However, lack of heat is not what I am referring to. It was just not particularly well flavored. The daal in particular was almost unseasoned. The chicken chunks were large, overcooked and quite dry. The chicken was over-sweetened and it as well as the Aloo Gobi lacked the wonderful sweet-sour balance that I expected. Don't get me wrong, this was not bad. It was just not five-star. We need to get back to Masala Bay and see if we had better food there. It has been a while since we went there. We had higher hopes for Himalaya because it is so close to home. We have long time Indian friends who told us that Nepalese cuisine is "Indian Lite", so maybe that is the reason for a reduced spice palette. I will try it again for sure, but probably will have to pick up something else for Ms T, because I am not coming home with mild again. We really wish it had been better. read more

We ordered take out. The chef and server seem like very nice people. We sat at the bar (we were the only ones in the restaurant at the time) and waited for our good to be prepared. Three entrees, one appetizer and bread. The entrees were Lamb Rogan Josh (excellent), chicken tikka masala (chicken was very dry) and Lamb Saag. The lamb in both dishes was nice and tender. Unfortunately the chicken in the CTM was very overcooked and the sauce was sweeter than we like. The appetizer = lettuce wrapped chicken was simple and nice. The bread (garlic naan) is not made fresh. All in all this is a good alternative to the traditional seafood served in OBX. We would recommend you give it a shot. read more

A bit of a different experience. The food was pretty good. They don't have Nepalese food despite the name and sign but the typical Indian items were average or slightly better than average. They have tables inside but it seems like a takeout restaurant. You order and pay at the counter and they bring food in disposable containers with paper plates and takeout utensils sets. They don't have water. You can buy sodas or bottled water from the cooler but they won't give you water or fill a water bottle. Something about their water tap. Might get takeout in the future if we're really craving Indian but won't go out of our way. Definitely won't eat in again. read more

On August 4th, around 5:00 pm, we ordered Indian food from your restaurant. The food was atrocious. Without detailing all the issues with the food, we contacted the restaurant the same day. We called on August 4th and 5th to report this, but the staff was uninformed, not knowing the manager's name or contact information. The staff was poorly trained and failed to apologize, which was very disappointing. The owner called us after a day. She outright refused to refund our money, asked the food back where she knew we stayed at the hotel and they cleaned our room, didn't apologize, and claimed she couldn't check our order from the previous day. When we described the poor food quality and service, she dismissively said the food wasn't meant for Indians but for locals. This is unacceptable. We were visiting Kitty Hawk and are of Indian descent; we know how Indian food should taste. The owner's rudeness and lack of professionalism are inexcusable. While we wish to support small businesses, this is a prime example of rudeness, cheating customers, and providing poor quality food and service. read more

Delicious Indian food in a friendly, welcoming and accommodating environment. We pre-ordered and picked up our dinner "to go" but there was also indoor dining available. We have vegans in our family and the restaurant was very helpful in pointing out vegan options. The mango probiotic drink was amazing. All our dishes were extremely tasty. It is absolutely wonderful to see a fresh new flavor in the obx! We had done beach Tex-Mex twice and were looking something different. The sweetest woman helped us navigate the menu to find our absolute favorites and the service was phenomenal. We decided to take the food to go and left with all the fixings of an epic meal with our family. The naan was made to order from fresh dough, the rice was the perfect texture and every single spice level was perfectly on target. The restaurant is clean and inviting and I hope to be able to dine in next time. Once home we decided to eat family style so that we could try everything. The biryani was amazing. The shahi paneer was my choice and was some of the best I have ever had. My husband chose the chicken vindaloo and thoroughly enjoyed it. The tomato soup was fantastic. We drove for 90 minutes from Hatteras Island to get a curry. Called in our order, 20 minute wait, was ready when we arrived. Clean establishment with a friendly chef & happy staff. It was time for a change of pace and Himalaya Indian Food was the answer. We decided to order carry out as our group of eight had all been doing different activities. Everything was nicely packaged and the order was all correct. We ordered there and the restaurant was very nicely decorated. Our group all have different levels of "spice" preferences. I personally do not enjoy spicy food but the Chicken Biryani was just right and delicious. I also tried the vegetable Biryani and I too was outstanding! Some of the other dishes being enjoyed were Shahi Paneer. Chicken Vinaloo, and the tomato soup. Of course the Naan was very tasty too. We definitely had plenty of food! The food is good when they get the order right. Make sure before you leave if you get takeout. Ask for a double bag for take out or be very careful of the bottom. Ours spilled all over the garage. They offered to give 1/2 off I drove back. This is obviously a great scam. Crappy bags and they sell 1 1/2 meals. If I didn't take them up on that silly offer I was told since it happened in my garage it was my responsibility. Two stars is a gift. read more

Great new addition to the restaurant scene in OBX. Well worth the drive from Avon. Counter service casual, order and pay at the register, food comes out on trays to eat at picnic style tables and benches indoors or at the bar. We sat at the bar, and were promptly greeted and offered a sample of their delicious mango lassi beverage, which was delicious. We promptly ordered two to enjoy while we decided what to have. Food arrived quickly, about ten mins after we ordered. The Samosas Chat were the best I ever had, the tamarind, yogurt and mint chutney sauces were spot on, topping a crispy samosa, sauced with savory chick peas in sauce. A total flavor bomb that has taught me a new appreciation for tamarind. My husband huffed the Tandoori chicken Tikka- ichunks of tender, moist boneless white chicken, beautifully marinated and spiced, tandoor grilled and presented with the traditional green peppers, onions and lemon wedge. I managed to grab a bite before it disappeared. Ah- mazing! So delicious. Again, one of the best I've had. Naan was homemade and hot. Alloo Gobi- the cauliflower and potato curry, bright yellow with golden turmeric, and favored with fenugreek, herbs and spices and garnished with green peas, was a great veg dish. One of the most enjoyable meals I've had on a minute ! This is also the sort of food that works brilliantly for take out and reheat, so next time we go to town, I'll definitely be ordering some take out to bring back to the island! This place is very casual but the food is incredible! You order at the counter and the food is cooked to order and comes out quickly. We had an appetizer, naan and two entrees. All plates and utensils are disposable. They also give you plenty of rice, extra utensils and containers to take leftovers with you. The wait staff and cook both asked us for feedback on what they could do better and we could give them nothing that could be improved! Highly recommend! Try them.
