You're on the Outer Banks, so there's always a bit of a "bridge tax" built into dining, but nothing here felt unreasonable. I ordered the lamb and beef gyro. One thing I appreciated is that they actually have an in-house vertical spit. Unlike some gyro places where the meat is processed with seasoning mixed in, this appeared to be made from whole pieces of beef and lamb stacked on the spit. It leaned more toward beef than lamb. My serving was not cut directly from the rotating spit. The meat had already been chopped into bite-sized pieces and was being held warm at the service line where the sandwiches are assembled. So, if you are expecting long, thin slices carved fresh from the spit, that is not what you will get here. The meat was still flavorful and satisfying, but the presentation was more chopped than traditionally shaved. The toppings were fresh, and they were generous with the tzatziki, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. I appreciated being able to customize everything exactly how I wanted it. The meat portion was measured with a ladle before being added to the pita. It wasn't overflowing, but I also didn't walk away feeling shorted. The only thing that gave me pause was the combo price. Adding fries and a canned drink for an extra $4 felt a little steep, so I just stuck with the sandwich. If you're comparing this to a dedicated Mediterranean restaurant, it's probably not a fair comparison. This isn't trying to be that. But if you're on the beach, want something that's a little healthier than another burger or fried seafood basket, and you'd rather support a local small business than another chain, OBX gyro is absolutely worth a stop.

This Mongolian grill: sit down, look at a menu, decide to get the Mongolian grill, get a ticket, put your name on it, decide which size bowl to get, what kind of rice, take your bowl and ticket up to the raw ingredients area, fill it up, use those sauces but don't use those sauces, give it to the cook, they cook it and then deliver it to your table. Anyway, the food was fresh and delicious, but this was a one and done situation. If you visit: pile up all the ingredients as high as you can to get the most bang for your buck. And good luck with the sauces. Inside is very nice and clean.

I decided to try the Gai Yang Thai Barbecue Chicken. I received a chunk of very dry breast meat and a drumstick. Again the flavorings were not remarkable. This breast piece was dry, nearly inedible. I chopped it up and put some of the good soy based sauce that they provided and managed to eat it. The drumstick was not dry, but again was not flavorful. This came with vegetables that I really liked. I seriously do not think the rice was Jasmine. It was not fragrant. It was more like Japanese sticky rice. The Chicken with Thai basil was the best of the lot. I was concerned about too much basil, but ended up wishing for more. This chicken was better than the other dishes. We really wanted to like this food but were disappointed. We enjoy Thai flavors and they were sadly lacking here. The servings were generous. For us this is a weak three stars.

Prior to arriving in town, I had made a reservation for dinner at Olives for later in the week. The day we arrived, after we unpacked and settled into our rental, we decided to take a walk to explore as we were staying in town. We happened to walk past Olives and decided to look at the menu - and that made us want to go there that night as we did not make any plans that evening and didn't want to get back in the car. I spoke with someone at the host stand and made a reservation for us. I figured I could cancel the reservation for later in the week after we had dinner. (Spoiler: We decided to keep the other reservation.) The food and the service were both excellent. The first night, I had the tri-tip souvlaki which was a special and my wife had the chicken souvlaki from the regular menu. We started with an order of the dolmas and they might be my new favorite. We both enjoyed our dinner and a nice booth with a view of the marina. We ordered a piece of the baklava to go. The second visit, we started with the hummus appetizer and I had the Keftedes and my wife ordered the gyro. The keftedes was so delicious with the tomato-based sauce. Luckily I had some pita to dip in that sauce. My wife enjoyed the gyro and I enjoyed the bite I got to try. The restaurant has a few greek wines on their menu but not a lot of selection. The restaurant is on the smaller side but they do have a few tables outside in the courtyard which in the nice weather is a good option and helps with capacity. The suggested substitute, pastitsio, did not meet expectations. The béchamel layer was sparse and lacked the rich, creamy character that defines the dish, and the ziti pasta appeared to have been overcooked (even for a casserole) during reheating of a pre-prepared serving. One aspect of the meal left me puzzled. Why serve Greek rice alongside a dish that already contains plenty of starch? Greek cuisine offers so many wonderful vegetable accompaniments that would have provided better balance and showcased the flavors of the region, including fasolakia, briam, yemista, gigantes plaki, or kolokithakia tiganita. On the positive side, the staff remained attentive throughout our meal, kept our water glasses full, and genuinely tried to accommodate us. However, they did not seem fully familiar with which menu items were available (wait staff need to check the 86 board before and during service!). Several tables offer pleasant views overlooking the park and wharf, which adds to the atmosphere. I also would have enjoyed seeing more of the classic blue-and-white décor that evokes the charm of a seaside taverna in Greece. Overall, the restaurant has potential, but the execution of the food and the dining experience fell short of the expectations created by the menu and the recommendations.

My husband liked his soup and he shared my Panang Curry with me, as the portion size was large! He loved the curry sauce. I liked the smaller pieces of chicken (some places cut the chicken pieces too big). It was overall very good. We would return in the future. The bill was $30.
