Vegan Tikka Masala - animal chicken meat
    Smileey F.

We had high hopes for this establishment because of the nice selection of vegan items but only received 4/8 dishes correctly prepared. FOOD -vegan tikka masala had chicken -we didn't get one item -we got a random sweet dish that was not ordered -we got two different Briyani but ended up with the same dish twice -momo stacked and packed, looked like ravioli -our veggie dishes tasted like frozen vegetables were used and so salty -packed in containers with no worry of spillage, bagged nicely SERVICE -over the phone ordering was difficult -everyone I spoke to was extremely sweet (two stars for that) -staff was kind but not fully present at pick up resulting in the order being so wrong Maybe a sit-down experience is better but ordering out (for a large group) was a bust.

OK, so it's not like we were scaling Everest like Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, but Jamie W. and I had never walked the full length of University Avenue before. On the western edge of the UC campus, we decided it would be a worthwhile stroll to the Fourth Street corridor on a coolish Saturday afternoon, especially since we weren't aware of the various dining options along the way. That's how we discovered this inviting Nepalese spot and decided to give it a try since it was a long way to Tipperary...I mean, West 4th Street. Choices were plentiful on their menu, but we decided to go vegetarian all the way. We started with the $7 Himalayan Salad. It was a straightforward plate of mixed greens, carrots, cucumber, and tomatoes in a honey-based housemade dressing (photo: http://bit.ly/2Q2lc6V). The combination worked as we wanted something fresh and simple to start. This was followed by the $12.95 Himalayan Yogi Tarkari, a similarly straightforward dish that combined assorted seasonal vegetables with a tomato and onion sauce with the consistency of a light curry (photo: http://bit.ly/2PY0Onx). Accompanied by a complimentary bowl of brown rice, it proved to be a warming and filling dish. Another act of kindness came with complimentary bowls of dal soup (photo: http://bit.ly/2QTClRo). We had enough sustenance to continue on our non-Himalayan journey. FOOD - 4 stars...simple veggie dishes nicely executed AMBIANCE - 4 stars...spacious, full of Himalayan decor SERVICE - 3.5 stars...quietly efficient TOTAL - 4 stars...no sherpa needed for this visit RELATED - If you're looking for other dining options in Berkeley, here's a list of places I've tried and reviewed: bit.ly/2N4anQA

    3. Chicken Momo

So I came in today because I had a coupon from Restaurant.com that I had purchased in April, but never had the chance to use it. This was our first time eating here and I called the restaurant ahead of time to make sure they accepted it. It was hard to hear because of all the background noise, but the man on the phone said that they accept it, but for dine in only. The coupon said dine in only, so that's what we were planning on doing in the first place. It also said $25 off $50 purchase, which we were aware as well. There were two people working. A man, who I assume is the manager, and the waitress. We were seated in the corner by the window. The tables were pushed very close to each other, crowded, and there wasn't much space to get by. The table where the waitress sat us at was very small and there was not going to be any space for all the dishes we were going to order.I asked the waitress if they accepted the coupon, just to make sure. She said that they are under new management and that they did not accept the coupon. I told her that I called ahead and the person on the phone said that they did accept it. Based on the reviews, it looks like new management has been around before April, the time I bought the coupon online, so I don't understand why they would still have it up then. I told her I had already paid for the coupon and she said that she will still accept it only if we spend $50, which we were going to anyways. It took awhile for the food to come out and me and my boyfriend were already starving before we got there. I thought that our food was coming, but it went to another table that came AFTER us. The manager and waitress seemed to be tending to other tables more than to us and we felt a little biased seeing how the tables that they were mostly tending to were White. We were rarely checked on and we didn't get our water filled until it was already empty and we were about to pay. We ordered two orders of chicken tikka masala, two garlic naan, lamb briyani, mango lassi, and chicken momos. Because of how small our table was, we had to make space and had to put our drinks and condiments on the window frame. The table next to us were so close that we couldn't even have a private conversation without them looking over at us every 10 minutes. It was so annoying, and I caught them staring at us a few times too. The food overall was okay in my opinion. I feel like I've had better chicken tikka masala elsewhere and the lamb briyani had huge chunks of herbs that I kept having to spit out when I was eating it. Not sure if the sauce for dipping the momo in was supposed to be cold, but I didn't like it. However, my boyfriend did enjoy the food, so thats why it's 3 stars. Points were knocked off for the service provided. We might order again, but probably do take out.

    Thumb-sized cinnamon bark

The order I placed with Himalayan Flavors tonight was incorrect (missing items), over an hour late, and cold. I tried to call the restaurant and got the answering machine. I ordered at 630 and didn't receive the food until 820. All of the food was cold.  The items each had large chunks of cinnamon sticks in them. Tree bark sized chunks that are both inedible and dangerous. Additionally the curries were runny, more like soup than curry, the lamb and chicken were not tender. Overall this meal was expensive compared to other similar restaurants and not satisfactory. There are a lot of delicious Indian and Pakistani options in Berkeley, I'd recommend dining elsewhere. I called your customer service and was on hold for 15 minutes at which time I gave up.  I would appreciate this situation rectified.

I was spending my birthday in San Francisco for a week and had to take a side trip to Berkeley for this place. It was such a beautiful quaint place with gorgeous artwork. I love the lamb, the flavors were excellent and just packed a punch. My boyfriend really enjoyed his meal too. The service was pleasant and we're looking forward to coming back.

The food and service was great! Had the Mixed Grill Tandoori plate with Chicken, Shrimp, and Lamb Seekh w/Brown Rice and Roti. Definitely a must try.

Unique decor with good Indian-style food. The momo's are unique. They're dumplings with a kick. The meat in goat curry is a bit tough. Highly recommend buttered mushroom chicken and garlic naan!

2.4 not too good...oily, greasy as heck, and slow ( we being only ones in there for about 20 mins) Underwhelming food. I have some authority to speak, as my guy grew up in Bombay ( bom bahia: good bay) & is a finicky foodie! Breads were not good for us. Not risky, not special. Buckwheat pancake: 1 of them $3.50! Prices here are steep for quality and quantity. Our malai kofta was made with beets primarily. Really??$13 for 3 small balls!!! Will not come back.

Mixed Momo - a little undercooked, skin loose & not closed fully

OVERALL PROS: - Nice atmosphere, feels warm and homey. - Very friendly service. We got a free dessert and were treated well throughout dinner. - Good variety on the menu. I couldn't choose for the life of me there were so many things that sounded good, including the juices & smoothies. - I came with an SFGate deal that made the dinner pretty affordable. The lentil soup that came with our meal and the free dessert didn't hurt either. OVERALL CONS: - The food itself, unfortunately, just didn't live up. The Assorted Tandoor came closest to impressing me, but everything just didn't taste as good as it sounded on the menu. - Be aware that they only have one juice per day! We were excited to order the "Pomegrateful" only to find out the juice of the day was "Fear Not" and that was all they were serving. It wasn't bad, but it would've been nice to have our first choice. THE FOOD: * Lentil Soup - This was a pretty lackluster dish. I could clearly see a layer of oil on top of the soup, and it was pretty watery and not as full of flavor as some other lentil soups I've had. * #5 Mixed Momo (Sampler of 3 pieces of steamed dumpling with chicken (ground chicken, chopped onion, garlic, ginger, cilantro, soy sauce, soy sauce, olive oil, herbs and spices), lamb (minced lamb, onion, garlic, ginger and cilantro) and veg (cabbage, spinach, mushroom, cashew nuts, onion, cilantro, olive oil, herbs and spices). Served with tomato chutney) - I was excited to try this new thing called momos that I've never tried before, but found them to be basically dumplings with slightly different fillings and dipping sauce. They were very loosely wrapped and had come partially open when they arrived at our table, and they just didnt' taste fresh. The fillings seemed too soft and undercooked, and we couldn't even tell which momo had which filling. * #23 Bhutanese Datshi (Bhutanese assorted vegetables sauteed with ginger and garlic, cooked w/ yogurt and goat cheese) - I LOVE goat cheese so couldn't resist ordering this. However, it was not very flavorful and you couldn't taste the goat cheese at all. It was just really plain, and the vegetables were way too assorted and random - there would be a couple giant chunks of each vegetable and they didn't compliment each other well as a dish. * #25 Lamb Samdeh (Tibetan stew of lamb cooked with onions, tomato and pepper, anise seeds, cumin, coriander and tumeric along with a touch of soy and cilantro) - The flavor of the stew was really good and it had a really nice thick texture. But the lamb was overcooked and took too much work to chew through! * #42 Assorted Tandoor (mixed platter of tandoori chicken, lamb kabab, shrimp tandoor, and chicken tikka marinated according to ancient tradition and grilled in Tandoor oven) - The lamb was a tiny bit overcooked but still had a good hearty texture. The shrimp was good (though there were just a few pieces) and the chicken fairly tender. A good sampler dish with a variety of protein. * #75 Kheer (rice pudding) - This was pretty different from any other kheer I've had. It's much less watery with a higher ratio of rice to pudding, making it more chewy and with more substance. It was topped with several spices that added to the flavor. * Fear Not (Juice bar menu: kale/chard, celery, apple, parsley, ginger, lime) - Very healthy tasting, fairly light and refreshing. I enjoyed this but my friends thought it tasted "too" healthy.

Got regular naan pickup via Grubhub+. It was a bit too chewy for my taste. It just felt more paratha-ey than naan-ey.

Though the exterior of…read morethe restaraunt is unassuming, and the building itself is quite small with limited seating, the interior is still very clean and neat, and the workers are very nice. I placed an online order for the C Chicken Momos and the Garlic Cheese Naan, which were both phenomenal. The naan was some of the best I've ever had. It was so fluffy, thick, and pillowy soft, and was not overly charred/thin or too crispy like other naan. Just pure doughy goodness. There was also a perfect amount of cheese filling--enough that you got the subtle kick of milky acidity, but not too overpowering. The naan itself was also not too greasy, and the garlic flavor was very aromatic. You could also taste a hint of the slight tartness from (I'm assuming) the yogurt used to make the naan. The "C" Chicken Momos came with eight large pieces, which is definitely enough to fill you up. The sauce tasted like a classic sweet-and-sour sauce with a very mild and pleasant spice. Also, because the dumplings were fried, they were crispy despite being covered in sauce, but still had a bit of the nice chew you would get from a steamed momo skin. The fillings themselves were also super flavorful: you get a herbal and fresh taste from the ginger, which balanced the tanginess of the sauce so the meal did not feel too heavy, and the subtle nuttiness and pepperiness of cumin in each bite. The dumplings also had some warm broth in them, which is perfect for a cold day. The prices are fair too. You can often find small discounts on Snackpass or delivery apps like GrubHub. Needless to say, I will definitely be coming back. Totally recommend!

Granting them the 4 stars. You can choose the spice level as well. Every dish we got we enjoyed. Lassis were sweet, yogurty, and had nice spice to it. The fish thali has wonderful flavor that paired well with the sides (except cold potatoes were ok). Samosas chana were also well flavored, paired well with the sauces and chickpeas, and crispy after being deep fried. Tikka masala and butter chicken were served in roughly 8 inch length dishes. Wonderfully seasoned, I would eat them for the sauce alone and chicken was tender. Served with rice and works great with it, but we also got some garlic naan (very garlicky would recommend). Chicken momos were ok in my opinion. Ok flavor but juicy and skin wasn't too thick. Isn't my taste personally, but similar to a korean mandu. However, can't rate them 5 stars because the service wasn't that great. We weren't checked on at all during our meal (or any of the tables next to us), no one even came to refill water. We had to flag them repeatedly to try and get the check and get a bag for our leftovers. They were attentive to what containers we needed for our leftovers though. I'd recommend this place for the food if you are ok with potentially lackluster service

I could tell he was a but overwhelmed since we were a group of 5, but he was really nice and courteous. He also answered the questions we had concerning the food. It took about 40 - 50 mins for our food to get in. We were the only ones in the restaurant so I'm surprised it took the long. That being said, i realized there was only one cook in the kitchen to it makes sense why it took so long however, I was not mentally prepared to wait that long. Around 12 pm, the hostess came in and was shocked to see us. She apologized for being late and wanted to get our orders but we told her the cook already got them. After waiting for about 50 mins, we finally got our orders. The food was AMAZING. Starting with the chicken sekuwa. It was a complete 10/10. I would definitely come back just for this. It was seasoned to perfection, very tender and juicy. The C Momo was very crispy and covered in a nice sweet chilli sauce. They're like deep fried dumplings. I would give it an 8/10. The lamb curry was very savory and filling. We got that with some rice and roti. It paired very well. I would also rate that an 8/10. The lamb thali was good but I think I was overwhelmed with everything on the plate. It was not bad, the lamb and lentil soup were good but I think I did not know how best to eat it so I could not fully appreciate it. I would give it a 6.5 The thai iced tea was pretty standard one. Very nice and not too sweet. 8/10 for ne The food here was pretty remarkable. I usually don't care about 'bad' service but this one really had a huge impact and stopped me from giving it a higher rating. I would not be too keen on coming back here with how understaffed they are but I do understand. If you're not in a rush, and are ready to grow your fruit of patience, I would definitely say the food is worth the wait and it was really good.
