Okay so my current obsession has been soup dumplings and I have searched far and wide for a good authentic place. I strictly come here for xiao long bao or any of the soup dumplings which are fantastic. The broth is so porky and flavorful and always brought out piping hot. I have even brought some of the most finicky eaters here and they can attest that this place is legit! This place hits the mark but unfortunately the lack of cleanliness really ruins the experience. I do really want to give this place 5/5 for the food but the restaurant is super dirty. Last few times I went they're were flies and a funky smell from the bathrooms. My water also had some weird stuff floating in it. I know its china town and I love a good hole in the wall but I can't compromise on questionable hygiene. Hing Kee has some of my favorite Xiao Long Bao! I really like the Crabmeat and Pork Soup Dumplings the best. The space here is a little cramped, especially during normal dinner hours. Usually the wait for a table has been no longer than 5 minutes in my experience. Once seated, they have a wide variety of dishes to choose from. The food - As mentioned before, I really like the Xiao long bao. They always come out super hot! Definitely poke/bite a hole in the top and let some of that heat out before eating (be careful not to let the broth come out). The tricky thing with these dumplings is that the only thing separating them from the container is a piece of lettuce. The longer the dumpling sits, the more stuck it becomes which increases the chance of the bottom tearing when you go to pick it up. The best method to eating it is to carefully pick it up, put it on one of the soup spoons, poke the hole in the top, wait a few minutes, and then pop the whole thing in your mouth. The flavor of the broth is really nice and I like watching the lady in the front making them by hand. Overall I like Hing Kee a lot because the quality and the amount of food you get for the price is very reasonable. Also it doesn't usually take too long for the food to come out. The only downside here is that, as others have mentioned, the service isn't always attentive or the best. Regardless, I frequently visit here and have enjoyed the food every time I go. read more

Best xiao long bao in Chicago!!! Hing Kee has large portions for a small price, 3 large entrees for under $30 after tax and tip. Soup dumplings are delicious, the spicy lamb meat on handmade noodles were great, and the fruit smoothies were extremely fresh and tasty. The beef pancake seemed like a larger fried spring-roll, was okay but didn't rock my world like the rest of the food. The food is okay, the only thing that's worth it here is the soup dumplings. Even at that they're okay. We had general tso chicken and it was the worst tasting general tso we ever had. I'm sure they added pickled something because it was just so pickly. Couldn't eat it. We also got some noodles and they were actually good. The servers are friendly and will take care of you. Normally try not to leave mediocre reviews but felt the need to warn people. I'm assuming this place gets packed bc it's in a central location with lots of foot traffic and not because of the food quality. Portions are super small and prices are too high. The sesame chicken and Mongolian beef were both just okay. I will say the soup dumplings were delicious but definitely smaller than others I've gotten in China town. 5 stars for their Xiao Long Bao from me, a person born in Shanghai, should have done all the talking :) Having been to many places claiming their Xiao Long Bao to be authentic, I'm lowering my expectations and be reluctant to try the so-called authentic soup dumplings simply because they aren't even close. Don't ask me why I haven't been to this place when lots of Yelpers said their Xiao Long Bao is amazing and I have lived in Chicago for years... but I finally walked in the restaurant today! Because of my suspicion, we (3 people total) started with one order. Xiao Long Bao has a decent size and I can see the soup inside meaning the skin was thin. When I lift it up, the soup dumpling formed a water-dropped shape, so I know it has enough soup and filling while the skin is strong. The flavor is FLAWLESS! so we added 2 more orders lol The only unfortunate part was that about 4-5 dumplings out of 24 broke on the bottom while we transfer them to the dipping sauce :( Overall, highly recommend this place for Soup Dumpling lovers and glad that I can finally say Chicago has a place for authentic Xiao Long Bao! It is amazing how they make the dough for their tang bao (also called the xiao long bao). It is at once thin enough to really accentuate the juices from the different flavors of fillings, but also thick enough to not break at the slightest poke of chopsticks. Truly an art that can only come from those trained on the street stalls of China (coming from someone who has lived in China for 3+years). Close your eyes and these soup dumplings could be comparable to the upscale restaurants in Shanghai (maybe just about 10% worse), and definitely on par with the city street food stalls featuring women whose adept fingers have been making them from scratch for their entire lives. Noodles taste hand-pulled and made in house. I don't know why you'd get anything other than the soup dumplings and the noodles (and by noodle dishes, I'm not including the pho or the random tom yum). 4 stars because I got some of their other dishes and was actually mildly disappointed with the taste. The ambiance of this place can really use some work. At an initial glance it's not much to look at, and there is a strange smell. However, don't let this fool you- the dumplings were on point and priced amazingly! I was able to feed 14 people for under $150 which is literally amazing. I love that its BYOB as well. After trying a couple of places in chinatown our first choice used to be "Phoenix" most times but today was an exception which ended up fine. The place was crowded but got our table in 5 min.Not much to talk about the decor.Service was ok but unlike other places they dint offer Green Tea which is Bit Off for me. You can get it on request but its not great and tastes like hot water. The Menu is huge as they are doing Sushi ,Smoothies and Bubble Tea as well.Everyone on reviews mentioned about Xiao long Bao(Soup dumplings) hence ordered it. Flavorful with soup dripping once you take a bit but I prefer my Bao to be try so not a great fan. Mango chicken was pretty good with right combination of sweetness and tanginess. Hong kong style sweet Dough are my favorite after trying them at "Ming Hin" and they could get the same taste in the sweet sauce which is really a good thing. I come to this place at least once every two months because it's got such a comforting feel to it, especially in the wintertime. The xiao long bao here are really solid, not spectacular, but the best in Chinatown! You can see the ladies making them fresh in the window front, and they're always soupy and delicious! I usually order their traditional handmade noodles as well--there are ~20 soup options and 4 different noodle thicknesses to choose from. If you've never had Chinese traditional handmade noodles before, this is a good place to try them! Pulled noodles have an elasticity to them that you can't get elsewhere. I've tried about half of the soups by now--my favorite is the Fatty Beef and Enoki Mushroom! The noodle soups are nourishing in the winter, and it's a large, filling bowl for like $8. If I'm in Chinatown and want something really comforting but I don't want to spend too much money, Hing Kee is usually where I go. For two people, an order of xiao long bao and a noodle bowl each is more than enough food, and it's about $25 total before tip. The rest of the menu is pretty standard for your typical Chinese restaurant--well cooked and satisfying but not particularly impressive in any way. However, I don't really get why they serve sushi (It does not look good. Don't get the sushi.) when their Chinese dishes, like the salt & pepper shrimp, are already solid. The first time I tried Hing Kee, the dumplings were decent, but their wonton soup with homemade noodles was flat (lacked deep-roasted chicken flavor and was watery). I gave it a 2nd try. The dumplings were significantly better; they were great, fatty, and had a rich flavor. I tried the wonton soup with non-homemade noodles, and it had a deep-roasted chicken flavor and was great. I will go back for more this week, and hopefully I get the good Hing Kee. 1 star removed, because this place smells extremely strongly of moth balls... prepare yourself when you enter. This was our worst experience eating outside in a restaurant post pandemic and Hing Kee made it possible. First of all, the attitude of the people managing and serving in Hing Kee is awful. They put up a 'Don't care attitude for customers'. They served us with utter apathy which highlighted their extreme lack of hospitality. Second, the food was served in paper plates, plastic spoons and forks and plastic water cups. I have been to several restaurants in Chicago and none did actually serve in paper plates. For a second we thought as if we are buying food from a food truck ! I mean come on guys we pay for you to serve us on paper plates and plastic spoons.Third and maybe the most important, the FOOD WAS HORRIBLE. We ordered Schezwan chicken and all we found was 3 tiny pieces of chicken and lots and lots of onions. It was basically Schezwan onions ! The dumplings were HORRIBLE too ! They had a thick shell and tiny portions of cabbage and chicken( though I doubt there was any chicken). There are several good restaurants in Chinatown which serve not only good food but also also serve in a good presentable manner with the required hospitality ! For Hing Kee management : Guys if you don't want to serve, then don't open the dine-in option, just have delivery. You guys are setting a bad example for Chinatown restaurants. read more

I'm NOT a dumpling person-I ate like 30 when I was a kid in one sitting, got sick,and since then usually avoid them... but these are delicious and i'd happily eat 30! We got the traditional pork ones. I had soup dumplings at nearby Dolo and these were MUCH better. As for service, well that's Chinatown. Still on the hunt for the best xiao long bao. I love that you can see the woman at the front of the restaurant making each one by hand, so you know they're fresh! Can't say they are the best I've ever had, but definitely at the top of the list as far as what I've had in Chicagoland so far. You can select the noodle thickness, which is pretty cool. I got the thick noodles, and it reminds me of the thickness of the Thai noodles, pad see yoo. Or papardelle pasta, if you want to compare to Italian noodles. I used to come here 3-4 years ago and the soup dumplings were GREAT. I came again for the first time in a while and wanted to try their noodles since they are hand pulled. We got the beef noodle soup. The serving portion is very large, well worth your money; however, the noodles are not very chewy - they don't taste or feel hand pulled so I'm not sure if they really are .... I would suggest probably only coming for their soup dumplings. If you want other dishes I would check out other restaurants in Chinatown. I also like to order a bowl of soup with my dumplings. That is how I grew up when I lived in Taiwan--dumplings with soup. Their soups are decent--hot and sour soup and corn chowder with minced chicken. A small bow can feed two people! :) Hing Kee has good service.
