Still absolutely on point with the service, attentiveness, quality and selection of rolls. It was really hard to stop by when they were only open for short hours Wednesdays, but with the new hours and days we will definitely be stopping by more often! We love Hinoki's AYCE spot, and enjoyed the Omakase experience a ton. The temaki bar is a great one between to get access to some higher quality fish and nigiri while also still paying for around AYCE prices. There have been some additional temakis options added since they first opened, and they made the nigiri combo (the best bang for your buck for a genuine Omakase style nigiri sampler I've ever seen) a permanent part of the menu. They usually have a special going on as well. We do wish it was a bit more decorated, or maybe had some nice quiet jazz playing, as it did get a little quiet at times and the blank black walls with the high ceilings were not doing any favors. Otherwise, that has nothing to do with how good the food is. We are looking forward to our next visit! read more

It's dangerous to have all my go to stores In one convenient shopping area.. I've been craving poke, and of course I had to stop... I wanted it as a side to go with my salmon dinner.. Already had scanned the menu before arriving, and went with the "just poke" bowl. I did not know it is also the entrance to the Hinoki Omakase..(which I need to try).. Yum!!! This place is great; you get a huge serving and is fairly priced. The space is small inside but they have several tables outside reserved exclusively for Hinoki patrons. The staff was friendly and attentive. I really enjoyed my poke bowl, the fish was fresh and so was the mixed greens and the rest of the ingredients. I'm glad this place opened as we didn't have a great selection of poke places in town. This for sure is my favorite one! read more

Wow! What an amazing experience! My husband surprised me for our 10 year anniversary with an evening at Hinoki O with wine pairing for me, and sake pairing for him. I loved that it was a small group, which made for a nice and intimate evening. Also, the group we shared this experience with, was lovely and everyone talked and shared stories. Each item we tasted, was SO delicious and just melted in your mouth. My husband and I both just kept looking at each other, wide eyed, amazed at everything we were tasting. I enjoyed my wine pairing and I know he found a new favorite sake. I can't even decide on a favorite because it was all just absolutely wonderful. I would say that it is very pricey. But, a perfect place to enjoy on special occasions. In a city where we're bombarded with AYCE sushi on every corner, this is a wonderful addition to Reno. read more

YUM! So, we wanted to check this place out because it is always appealing to be able to create your own poke bowl. To summarize my experience, here are my top things to note: (1) fresh flavor (2) big portions So, I had the fried tofu and it was just perfectly done! I also added lots of toppings and had two premium toppings which made the bowl quite hefty. For myself, I could easily eat half now and save half for a future meal. There were lots of sauces and seasonings to add for any flavor profile. My husband got the ahi tuna and he commented on how fresh the taste was and mentioned it tasted fresher than this place we had while we were in Hawaii... So that is saying something! When you get there make sure to read the signs for directions. For example, for the protein you can choose up to two different proteins! I also enjoyed all the Asian and Hawaiian beverages they have available, so make sure to look and try something new! read more

I was looking around for lunch and saw that Hinoki Poke recently opened up. They are located next to Mari Chuy's in The Village at Rancharrah. There are plenty of parking spaces and they are currently in their soft opening phase until the end of the year! If you've tried Hinoki Sushi before, this is under the same owner. The poke bowls are $15 each. There is only one size for their bowls. We opted for the build your own bowl. In our bowl, we got: base (white rice), protein (salmon, yellowtail), sauce (yuzu shoyu, ceviche), toppings (imitation crab mix 2x, red onion, cilantro, mango, ginger, cucumber, seaweed salad, won ton strips, tempura onions, green onions, furikake, fried garlic). I liked how the mango was fresh and not canned. They also had tempura onions. You only get two scoops of protein though while other places give out 3-5 scoops for around the same price. It was interesting to try the ceviche sauce which I don't think other places have. I noticed there is no extra charge for avocado and it is listed under the premium toppings. Overall, not bad. I do still have my favorite poke place, but this place did not disappoint either. I will probably check it out again once their soft opening is over. read more

What more can you say about perfection? That Hinoki O is serving some of the best sushi I've ever had is certainly a subjective statement. That the experience is exceedingly intimate - almost to the point of being daunting - is also correct. However, if you love Japanese cuisine as we do, then this is a place you absolutely must visit. What Duc, Chef/Owner of Hinoki O has done is create a bit of a separate peace; entering through his more conventional restaurant (Hinoki Poki), a sliding door reveals a small side room with just enough room to seat six at the bar, plus the chef, his assistant and the sparse yet attentive waitstaff. The menu is omakase-style, which means you leave it up to the chef to decide what you'll be having and how it will be served. The price ($160 for standard, $200 for deluxe) may seem high, but in all honesty I think Duc's breaking about even considering the quality of fish and the expert service you receive. We had the deluxe menu, which included Japanese uni (small and sweet) and seared wagyu (meltingly rich and delicious), in addition to the 12 other courses that come with the regular menu. Duc started us off with chawanmushi, a light broth and custard dish hiding a delightful surprise slice of scallop at the bottom. And what followed was a wonderful procession of sashimi and nigiri sushi, all of it perfectly prepared and seasoned. All the while, Duc regaled us with stories of sushi - what we were having, where it was from, why he was presenting it and how it should be enjoyed - which made the experience effortlessly flow. Don't expect to get California rolls here, nor a bath of soy and wasabi for your sushi. This is the real deal, artfully prepared and ready to enjoy. And enjoy you will. Okay, Hinoki Poke, you win! In my opinion, this is the best poke place in Reno. Super fresh quality ingredients, generous portions, and made super fast. The best part for me is that the little fish eggs are tucked far into the corner and not thrown all over the place like at many other poke places in town. They do a great job of keeping ingredients separate here and as someone with an allergy, I really appreciate that! My custom bowl was delicious! Came here on my lunch break today since I'm already in love with their sushi spot on Longley. I absolutely love Poke and tend to have high expectations especially since they already have a sushi spot. Portion wise, the bowl itself is pretty decent size, about 20 ounces. As for the protein choices, you can only pick 2 and it's about two ice cream scoops worth, so for $17, it would be nice to get at least one more scoop or have up to 3 choices. But compared to other poke spots in town, their fish tasted fresh! As for their sauce choices to choose from, great choices of shoyu, spicier sauces like spicy mayo and my favorite, teriyaki. As for the toppings, you can have a good amount of their initial toppings but they do limit only 2 for the imitation crab/ avocado/tobiko, and then you have to pay extra if you want more than two, which understandable. I usually only get two anyways. In terms of crunch toppings, that have wonton strips! Super crispy and adds a great crunch, they don't have any nori though to offer which would be a preference I would suggest. In terms of the service, I was there to pick up my order and the staff was very hospitable and had my order wrapped up and ready to go. They also use compostable utensils and packaging, which is a plus for me! read more

Finally got a chance to stop by and share a bowl of poke at Hinoki, and glad I did. The fish tasted really fresh and they have a wide variety of choices. The choice of sauces was great as well. Building your own bowl with the help of the staff was easy although with so many choices it is a little daunting. While you could eat inside, it was such a glorious day out, the ability to eat outside is a great option. The price of $17 for such a large bowl is very reasonable and was able to feed two of us. Hinoki poke is my usual choice for poke, but was pretty disappointed in the quantity of my poke bowl this time around. I always get a mixed green poke bowl. This time the amount of mixed greens in my bowl was much less than usual. My sister and I went together and had different people doing our order. Her mixed greens were filled to the top of the bowl while mine was maybe a handful. I had asked for more but not much more was added, and I didn't want to keep asking since she wasn't adding much. It was even more disappointing since the price of the bowls went up to $17. Its more worth it to go to Loco Ono and get more fish and more mixed greens for about the same price. Also, the wooden spoons provided are not well made. Both my partner's and my sister's spoons (I opted for chopsticks) broke immediately. It's be nice if better quality spoons that don't easily break were provided. read more

My husband and I went to Hinoki Poke at the Rancharrah community for lunch one day and it was a very nice experience. It is very small inside but it is meant to walk in and order only and then they have nice seating outside. If it's cold or bad weather you won't have anywhere to eat but could eat in car or take home. It is a a little pricey but they do give you a decent amount of food. They have good sauce choices and something different I haven't tried before in a poke bowl and fried onion strings and they have them as a topping which was pretty good. One of there normal bowls includes a base, three scoops of fish and a myriad amount of toppings and choice of sauce and shakers. They also mix the fish with the sauce before putting it in the bowl which is good and my personal preference. The staff were also very attentive and nice! It was a fantastic experience provided by chef Duc, the 15 course meal was well balanced. Each item was delicious as stand alone dish, and harmonize with each other perfectly. The portion size was carefully designed, we left the restaurant feeling completely satisfied without feeling too full or unfulfilled. In addition to the food, chef Duc is a wonderful food guide and great conversationalist. The sushi was of high quality, and we had a really fun time talking with Chef Duc and our fellow diners. So why was I disappointed? At this price point, the comparison is not with AYCE places in Reno. No question, this was far and away better than those places. At $200 per person, the comparison is with other omakase sushi restaurants in bigger cities. Here are some things that I wanted but didn't get: 1. An artfully arranged plate of small appetizers to show off different cooking techniques. 2. A sashimi plate with an assortment of small garnishes. 3. A few out-of-the-ordinary, unusual fish selections. 3. Freshly ground real wasabi root on the side. 4. House made soy sauce with extra flavoring, like bonito or plum. 5. Richer dashi flavor in the chawanmushi and miso soup. 6. Ponzu sauce to go with the scallop. 7. Something more filling at the end, such as a rice dish. 8. A creative house made dessert. 9. A better sake selection. What I did get was an interactive, fun dinner featuring high quality ingredients (like uni, toro, and wagyu) not commonly found at other Reno restaurants. This is an audacious attempt by Chef Duc to introduce omakase sushi to Reno. We enjoyed our dinner, but I hope he is able to step up his game and bring Hinoki O up to big city standards. read more

Got a poke bowl with salmon and yellowtail with a mango sauce, and while it was fine, as someone who has eaten a lot of raw fish over the course of my life, there just wasn't a ton of flavor, to the point where I tried the fish individually and both the yellowtail and salmon were pretty similar. Servings are fairly large, but not absurdly so: it came in a pretty large tray but the tray was at best half full. At almost 20 dollars a bowl, either you need quantity or very high quality, and this wasn't either for me. Not a disaster: I just prefer the sushi personally at the other location. read more

My new favorite spot for poke! Me and my girlfriend chose to visit here to try the poke after attending Hinoki O (omakase experience by the owner of Haru, Hinoki Sushi, Hinoki Poke), and we were very happy with our experience. We typically frequent Loco Ono for our poke, but have lately found the quality to be rather inconsistent - not here! The bowls, while similarly prices to Loco Ono and smaller, contains far better ingredients. There was also a huge variety of items that could be added to the bowl, which all tasted fresh and had amazing flavor. The fish tasted incredibly fresh and was flavorful. Often you find that fish either has incredible flavor or incredible texture - rarely both - but the fish here definitely was the best of both worlds. A nice touch here is that two premium ingredients (avocado etc.) are included with the bowl, as opposed to most places that will charge a couple dollars extra. I find that this adds a bit of extra value, as you will opt for wonderful items you may not usually spring for. I'd also like to mention that this place is housed in the new Rancharrah venue, which always has a great vibe to it, and is beautiful itself. We'll be back here often - though this venue is home to a few great places to eat. Stiff competition! read more

The experience here is difficult to fully articulate. Years ago I enjoyed omakase at Morimoto's, which was an adventurous experience to say the least. But what it lacked was the face-to-face engagement. Through our interaction with Chef Duc, we not only learn about the amazing ingredients he painstakingly prepares and the culture they derive from, but also how much he genuinely cares about what he does and those he serves. Every single morsel was perfect, nothing incredibly complex, simple and fresh, and prepared with a respect and mindfulness that you can't help but adopt in your enjoyment. I didn't not take any pictures out of respect for the chef, but the restaurant was clean and comfortable. If you can find an available sitting I strongly recommend this as a must in Reno. read more
