I've really tried to give this place a chance for years but it has just declined in quality and increased in price over the years and just doesn't quite do it for me. I've tried at least 4 different variations of specialty drinks since April 2020 (Rick Ross, Yoncé, I'm in Love w/ Da Cocoa and the Iced Mint Drip) and have adjusted milk substitutes and levels of sweetener but still tastes subpar to just plain bad. The drinks taste like pure sugar and when the sweetness is cut back, there is no actual flavor to the drink (hence why I guess they make it so sweet). The drinks range from tasting like diabetes in a cup to most recently, tasting like plain minty water. About 5 years ago, Hippie's Brew used to be very good. I've just not had a good drink from here for the past half dozen times I've visited since the beginning of the pandemic and it's really quite disappointing as it used to be such a Hayward staple! I'd much rather make the drive over to Philz (where it's cheaper and coffee quality is so much better) if I have the time but when I don't, I settle and come here. I'd love to give 5 stars if they went back to what they used to be but sadly, my past few visits don't show that it'll happen anytime soon. read more

We came here on Saturday at noon and the line was out the door. The location is a bit small and there was the Farmer's Market going on. It's located next to the library, so we just parked on the street. This place is definitely geared to those who like sweet & creamy coffee. I decided to get the Gangsta's Paradise with almond milk. It's their cold brew with coconut cream & coconut flakes. It was a bit sweet for me, so I asked if they could add more cold brew. They were happy to do so and it tasted good after that. The iced mint drip is like the Philz mint mojito. It was alright. We were on the way to lunch, so we didn't want to try their food. Their toasts sounded delicious though. The patrons and staff at this spot are so nice, it really has a community spot kind of vibe. I actually found out about this place because a customer found my dog (we had just moved nearby and she snuck out, I was looking all over the neighborhood for her) and the manager called me to let me know she was found there! They were nice enough to offer me a sample that day of Gang$tas Paradise and it blew my mind and made my day, on top of finding my dog. So this is now Navi's and my favorite spot to get coffee in Hayward! There's a lovely park across the street where you can enjoy your morning coffee. $7 for a large coffee, not unusual these days, we come here as a treat in our days off! Attached to the new library, this place is a super cute coffee shop that touts unique coffee drinks. A lot of reviews of this place focus on price and yes it's true this place is definitely expensive for coffee I will say ... but it does taste delicious in the end. My cold brew Yoncé was a little too sweet and in my opinion needed a little more coffee (but I wasn't going to pay extra for a splash more of cold brew). If you're looking to have a coffee chat with someone or catch up with a friend, I would recommend coming here and chilling outside either in the near park/square across the street or even in the outdoor seating in front of the shop. Overall, the staff here were very helpful especially with it being my first time visiting! I tried the Ice Loves Coco and the Ice Mint Drip and both were great! Strong enough with the right amount of sweetness and creaminess. I've seen many people from the Hayward/SJ area post their Hippies Brew and what better way to get a caffeine fix after hiking around Lake Chabot? It's only about 10-15 minutes away. It's a newest spot in a construction zone, parking isn't too bad off of C street or neighboring streets, once you see a spot I suggest just taking it and walking to the spot. It was a bit confusing when I first go there because I saw a kiosk so I assumed I had to press it but usually a worker is taking orders and that's where you pay (I blame the confusion due to being tired from my 12 mile hike). You can't miss it because there are always a ton of people outside waiting for their coffee or catching up. I was then greeted by a friendly worker who helped me make decisions on what to get. I've only seen Iced coffees posted and it was a little cold so I was contemplating on getting a hot or cold drink and the worker recommended it iced for your first visit. I went with the infamous Rick Ro$$ and I was very happy with it. It was their dark roast cold brew with cocoa powder, cinna vanilla, sweet cream topped with cinna suga (cinnamon sugar). I was surprised that it wasn't as sweet as I was expecting it to be (I don't like my drinks too sweet, I def think Dutch Bros and Philz sweet & creamy drinks are overly sweet). I drank it on my drive home and it gave me the nice caffeine boost and it tasted really good. I wanted a little snack to go with it and yo momma's cinnamon toast was perfect! It came with 2 toasted cinnamon bread pieces. And especially easy to eat while driving. Some other honorable mentions is the Sorta Kinda Latte, which is similar to the Rick Ro$$ but it's with a medium as opposed to dark roast and instead of cocoa it has brown sugar. I have been dying to go to Hippy's Brew in Union City but once I heard that there was an "express" in Downtown Hayward, I just had to try it. Two times before I visited this location today, I had a friend pick up a hot Rick Ro$$ and an Iced White Iverson and I was hooked. Also very caffeinated for the rest of the day. I had to get my car serviced in the morning and was told it was going to take 3 hours (yikes) so I ended up walking to downtown to see this place in-person for the first time and man, was I not disappointed. But before that, let me just say that it was HARD to spot this place and if you're driving through downtown, you're going to miss it. For those who need cross streets, it's on the corner of C St and Mission inside the new Hayward library at the corner. There is plenty of parking on the adjacent streets and there are parking lots nearby that are never full so don't worry about that! Customer service wise, this location has that down as you are warmly greeted by the person at the front and are not rushed through your order. Food wise, their breakfast sandwich, the McLovin is my favorite hands down with its spicy (not really) chipotle mayo. I've also heard their freakin French toast is really good as well. Drink wise, I had enough caffeine to get me through my two jobs and still write this review! Definitely very sugary drinks but you can taste every flavor that they advertise and they have some really creative flavors Price wise, this might turn some people away as it is a bit more $1-3 more than your usual Starbucks/Peet's order but let me tell you, it's worth trying! I've seen many social media posts on HB and I'm glad I got to check it out for myself. This was just a taste test... I'll have to come back to try the whole menu over time! This coffee biz is attached to the library entrance. How perfect there's a garage right behind it and I was able to find parking no problem. Otherwise I'm usually weary of downtown areas. Friendly service - the cashier apologized several times for the long wait, which I didn't think was even bad. Good to see a steady stream of customers supporting this small business. Also a mini plus for the cute environment-friendly paper straws. I got the in-love-w.-da-coco and it was good! Creamy + the right level of sweetness and toasted coconut. I could do without the coconut flakes toward the bottom of my drink but it's fine, they probably added to the flavor. My coworker got the yoncé and had quite the excited reaction. I think HB is way better and lives up to the hype more than Philz. The coffee made me more awake than normally but didn't keep me up at night, nor did it make me jittery. The Kinda Sorta Latte is pretty much the same, but has brown sugar instead of cocoa powder- also delicious if you prefer that. My sister and I love coming by here to grab a cup of coffee. Be aware that the prices here are about $1-2 more than your usual Starbucks/Peet's, but it's so worth it. We've tried RICK RO$$, Kinda Sorta Latte, The Yonce, I'm In Love with Da Coco & White Iverson (so basically all of the coffee flavors), but RICK RO$$ is hands down both of our favorites. They do sell their drinks by the 1/2 gallon in store. Full gallons are also sold, but that must be purchased ahead of time on their website to pick up in store. They sell branded merchandise from hats/beanies, to t-shirts/hoodies, to stickers as well. If it's your first time coming here, it will most likely be difficult for you to find since there's no storefront sign. You can just park and walk on over- parking was pretty easy to find the multiple times I've gone. The shop is connected to the Hayward Library, but there is a register outside of the shop where you place your order. After placing your order, once your name is called- you will step inside to grab your drink. Overall- I'm so glad we came across this coffee shop. What a pleasant experience! Everyone was super nice and the service was so quick. I tried the gangsta's paradise and it was a tropical delight. The coconut bits at the top were such a nice touch. My partner tried the yonce and found it too sweet for his liking so he waited for the ice to melt into the drink a bit more before really getting into it. Personally, I love sweets so I enjoyed my coffee more than he did his. If you are looking for a strong coffee flavor, I would recommend asking to adjust the sweetness. I could not stop myself after the first sip. It's one of the best coffees I have had in a long time. Nice spot to grab a coffee or boba! My friend and I came here to hang out and catch up (socially distanced and outdoors). There is some sparse seating outdoor but most people just take their drinks to go. The line and ordering location are outdoor, and you only need to go indoor briefly to pick up your drink. I gave this place 4 stars for good service and good vibes, and took off 1 star because I think the drink itself was just so-so; perhaps it was just not my style. I had the 40WATAH which is black tea with cinnamon vanilla cream. It was super creamy which made for an interesting texture, but I felt it was too heavy after drinking half of it. I would definitely consider coming back to try other drinks and enjoy the positive vibes. While my friend and I were here, there was actually an incident where a car hit an employee's parked car and then ran off. Located right next to Hayward Library, there is always parking available in the parking garage, and it's free! The majority of customers come for their cold brews, but it was too late in the day for me to have caffeine so I'll have to come back and give that a try. It seems like their menu is now condensed (not sure if that is due to Covid or this location), and I only saw three food options available: Freakin French Toast, McLoving Muffin, C Me Rollin.. They Hatin!!. I would definitely come back (and likely opt for their larger location in Union City the next time around) to try their McLovin Muffin, OG Bagel Sandwich, and their cold brews!
