I asked if it was okay since i had my sweatshirt covering my face and nose and he said no. He then proceeded to tell me that he can SELL me a mask for $.50. Are you serious??? You cant just give me one? Ridiculous. Remember the days when masks werent available and you could tie a bandana, scarf, shirt over your face and were allowed inside an establishment. Very cute little venue and concept for a place, but location really blows for the vibes that they have going on. I wish they had a larger space with off the street back patio outdoor seating rather then being right along the main drag of the street. There is usually a line because they are good, so yeah.. deal with it. When ordering for multiple people you will likely not get served up as you would a normal sit down restaurant. They are a small venue and serve up in an efficient way that makes most sense for them. If you want a real sit down and be served experience you should go to a sit down location. Cutesy little names make this menu fun to mull over and it is most definitely a young eclectic group of people. I hope to return to try some more bites next time I am in the area. Enjoy! read more

***Review before Covid-19*** Finally! After a long wait, we are back and at the first location to open after their mutiple closures. This is a tiny hole in the wall, even smaller then the OG joint. They didn't have oat milk, so we went with almond for our two large Gangsta's Paradise. Creamy and sweet, we had to stop our selves from guzzling down the entire drink. Plus there were several activities occurring such as farmers market and Mayday. We ordered Rick Ro$$ and Ice love coco, and we had them hot. Before Coronavirus hit, Hippie's Brew was our favorite local coffeeshop. It became tradition that, my cousin and I frequently sat in the lobby to catch up over our favorite HB drink. Mine is the Rick Ross. Her favorite was the mint coffee drink (apologies I do not know the name). I was initially skeptical of the Rick Ross because I strongly dislike cinnamon but this drink won me over. The Sorta Kinda Latte is a unanimous favorite. It's a more subtle Rick Ross. We were initially worried about how they would survive with the pandemic and we were thrilled to see them quickly pivot into bulk jugs and a streamlined menu offering. As soon as shelter in place lifted, we head right over to pick up baby jugs (1qt) for home consumption. We also tried their boba but I would not not recommend. Will stick to coffee. I docked one star for price. After doing the math - $14 for a 1quart/32oz jug is equivalent to two(2) medium 16oz cups. That's $7 for a medium versus their in-store price of $5.50/medium. I understand that the cost of doing business is higher now and the argument is that the bulk jugs are more concentrated. However, I found the price difference hard to ignore, especially if I want to frequent them as often as I used to. Our strategy now is to buy the jugs and drink them slowly, diluted with lots of ice so they last longer. Or we buy large cups (still cheaper at $6.00) and ask them to put less ice or we keep them as-is and stock them in our fridge. Easier on my budget. read more

It was pretty delicious. This was my friend's order but I took a bite out of it. I got the McLovin Muffin (pork sausage patty, egg, cheese) and an iced Sex Pot (loose leaf tea). So when I first started eating the muffin, I thought it tasted alright but when I got to the bottom of it.. that's where all the chipotle mayo sauce was! It wasn't spread out good but oh well. Waited about 20 mins in line and another 20 mins for our orders. My tea had a strong green tea taste (description shows CA orange peel & elder flower blossoms). This coffee is amazing it's so smooth and delicious. Usually when you try specialty coffee it's very sweet but this had the perfect sweetness. I tried the ice loves coco and rick Ross and they were both amazing. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with any of their drinks! I am pretty much a usual at HB and wanted to get my fix and saw that they had this location! It was actually my first time here and safe to say that it was probably my worst experiences. It hurts me to write this review! I came in and was excited bc usually HB workers are amazing and also so welcoming. As soon as I walked in, I had some really negative vibes. There were two workers but one of them was busy doing other stuff. The one who helped me was a tall guy with slightly curly hair and a beanie. He didn't seem really enthused to be working at all. He mumbled a couple of words, and took my order. I had asked him for no ice in both of my drinks when I ordered. But when I saw him add ice to the cups, I asked him if I can get no ice in both the drinks and he rolled his eyes then looked up and he just dead stared at me with no response. An "ok" would've done it for me but he literally just STARED at me! He then accidentally spilled and missed the cup when pouring one of the drinks and then proceeded to say "f*ck!" Not sure if you want to say that in front of a customer. He also didn't let me know which drinks was which and I couldn't tell bc he didn't add any brown sugar or caramel drizzle in either of the drinks when it's supposed to come with it. Luckily the drinks are basically pre-made so it tasted good even without the toppings- hence the two star. Safe to say that I will never come back to this location. read more

Yesterday I went here and I absolutely loved the artsy, laid-back atmosphere with it's cozy old fashioned dinning room tables, fabric armchair facing the window, and an old school boom box blasting r&b music. I was a little let down that a lot of the menu items were out of stock, but thankfully the baristas were very patient with me and switched out the drink I initially bought because i found out it was coconut. They're coffee is super strong (which I loved), and they managed to find me something sweet to drink. Plus, their McLovin was a very meaty, filling breakfast sandwich. Another reason the baristas have the patience of a saints was because there was a homeless man that was boarder-line harassing them. They were nice enough to give him a cup of water that he requested. It wasn't a problem until he decided to go in and out of the shop at least 5 times in the short amount of time I was there, asking for random things pestering the workers (thoroughly freaking them out), attempting to make small talk with me/scaring my dog, scaring a mom who had her toddler with her, and scaring two white guys eating outside because he decided to yell curse words at them for whatever reason. It's a good coffee shop. And it's in a nice neighborhood and has so much potential. But the owner probably needs to consider how to address these situations. It didn't feel like a safe situation for anyone, and the baristas handled it gracefully despite having no idea what to do. They deserve a bonus. read more

Finally got to knock this one off my bucketlist. I didn't realize this was the express location so I didn't get the full experience of the HIPPY DIPPY VIBES but that's alright. Parking is easy as it is street parking. No public restrooms so that's a bummer. The layout of the store is not as inviting and could get very crowded but many people would wait outside, go in to order, then comes out to wait for their drinks. They did have a few tables outside. There was so much going on that I stumbled when ordering but the girl who helped was super helpful for my first time. She told me what was what and what most people got. I have to come back to try the other drinks but I got the rick ross and the ice loves coco, the 2 most popular drinks. Like others, what really got me were the name of the drinks. They are creative and just make you really vibe with the darn coffee. Like how cool is it that a drink is called Im in luv with da coco or rick ro$$. So creative and fitting. I didn't realize they had other milk options and cold brew available, but that's more reason to come back. I stopped by Hippie Brew for a quick caffeine fix before a road trip. I was surprised to find it located right underneath the Hayward Library - what an awesome spot for a neighborhood coffee shop! Good thing too because this Hippies Brew is really small and not suited for working or studying (hence the Express name). It was a good sign to see a handful of people inside this tiny shop at 9am on a Saturday! Here's what we ordered: Rick Ross (dark roast w/ cocoa, powder and cinnamon cream) - really good, not overly sweet/creamed or loaded with cinnamon. Just a well-crafted drink. I have no problems with making this my go-to at Hippie Brew. Peppermint patty (cold brew, cocoa powder, mint & cream w/ peppermint shavings) - didn't taste nearly as much peppermint as I expected. Slightly creamy. Tasted like a very mild version of a Philz Mint Mojoto. Would probably try slime others drinks Cool drink names, good quality and nothing too overpowering here. Their cinnamon toast they make is divine. I had it for the second time today while waiting for the Hayward public library to open. The portion size is beyond generous. I ate a few slices which were sliced like cinnamon toast sticks. It's perfectly sweetened. I like sweet cream cheese that came with it. I saved the rest for breakfast in the morning. Absolutely love that Hippie's Brew is back, and, in the perfect location! I've been going since I moved to east bay. However, I thought it would be worthwhile to mention what a debacle it was to purchase and pick up whole beans from Hippie's Brew; hopefully, whoever is in charge can smooth the process over in the future. So, it was midweek and I thought I would stop by Hippie's brew to pick up some beans instead of going to Peet's or Starbucks, both of which are right around the block. We were told that they don't have beans to sell in stock--however, they could order some. Well, I'm a fan of local business and Hippie's brew so, sure, I bought some. But, wait. The first issue, they only do orders on Mondays. They said they'd call when they were there. Second issue: Ok, come back next week and find employees inside but a closed Hippie's Brew; Um, their hours on Yelp say they are open until 7pm. In any case, around 4pm they are inside closing down yet do not open the door though we're waving (thanks guys!). Days later, someone on a 3rd visit (just for beans!), said 'oh yes they're here!" Overall, it shouldn't take three trips to pick up beans. I'd like to see them stock some local beans in the store for purchase. Someone should make a website and put out correct information on social media and Yelp. In addition, they should make employees aware of customer orders (the one's there seemed clueless someone ordered beans) in case whoever places the orders isn't there when the customer picks up their order. Post-it notes? Whiteboard? I think if they sold local beans and showcased them it would go a long way. read more

If you love sweet coffee, this is the place to get it. It is now located in the heart of Hayward and if there is no street parking, you're able to park in the parking garage! I love the vibe of the coffee shop because it feels homey. It does however feel like a small space, especially when it gets busy. There's not a lot of places to sit (unless the library is also open, but you can't bring it in there either lol), and there's a few tables and chairs outside as well. The coffee is amazing, I've tried a handful of the different drinks, and I love the names they have named their drinks. Each one is unique in taste and I hope to try the rest of them. My favorite things to get from here are sorta kinda late iced and they OG bagel I get it with chipotle cream cheese instead in a jalapeño cheddar bagel. My boyfriend loves Ice loves coco they also add coco puffs on top of this drink. This location is located on the corner of the new Hayward library. If you're looking to sit down and have brunch you can go to their bigger location which they just opened in Union city.m.
