It was so good lao style so flavorful and pungent. . Duck larb which is different and duck larb is such a bougie dish to me, the herbs is so good mixed in and a great salad for the hotter months. Great if you don't want something too heavy. . Overall they do have specials for beers. Make sure ask specifically for the happy hour beer. Service was just simple and nothing special. I was introduced to this place by a family member who goes here almost every week, and it lived up to my expectations! The atmosphere was cozy, with dim lighting and comfortable seats. The green curry (mild spice) had a lot of depth and a good spice to it. There were a lot of veggies inside, like bamboo shoots and eggplant. The consistency is more liquid-y compared to other green curries I've tried but I would still recommend. I also enjoyed the Pad See Ew dish but would get mild spice next time. Love it! Hiso is a fantastic addition to the Sacramento area for authentic Lao and Thai food. It's not located directly downtown but on the outskirts, depending on where you're coming from. After reading several positive Yelp reviews, we decided to give it a try and made the trip just to experience the food for myself. Parking is limited to street parking, so we had to park around the corner and walk to the restaurant. Once we stepped inside, we were greeted with beautifully curated Southeast Asian decor. The space felt very welcoming and aesthetically pleasing, with one standout feature being a map of Laos spotlighted on the wall in the waiting area. I loved that touch, it really added to the charm and authenticity of the Lao & Thai vibes. Although it wasn't very busy during dinner time, we still had to wait a bit to be seated. For dinner, we ordered the truffle fries as an appetizer, followed by the chicken pad Thai (medium heat), Lao-style steak, and noodle soup kao piek. * Truffle Fries: A great starter, perfectly crisp and flavorful. * Chicken Pad Thai: The flavor was spot on saucy, sweet, sour, and the perfect level of medium heat. I couldn't get enough! So good! * Lao-Style Steak: A good portion size but on the pricier side for $35. The cut of steak was fattier than I expected, which was a bit disappointing. * Noodle Soup Kao Piek: The broth was rich and flavorful, but for my personal taste, the white pepper was a little overpowering and overshadowed the other flavors. Like a lot of midtown/downtown restaurants, the portion to price ratio isn't the best. Street parking. Service was average. Even though they weren't busy, we were standing around and waiting to get seated for a while. It also took them a long time to check on our order. After our dishes were brought out, they did check in a couple times though. Food-wise, everything tasted good and had a lot of flavor. We tried the following dishes: Fresh Roll, Butter Shiitake Mushroom, Tom Yum, Tom Kha, Mango Curry, Pad Thai, and Basil Fried Rice. Surprisingly, I preferred the Tom Yum over the Tom Kha. The Tom Yum was more flavorful, and the coconut flavor wasn't as present as l like it to be in Tom Kha. I really enjoyed the Fresh Rolls. The peanut sauce was one of the best I've had. To drink, I tried the Green Thai Tea. This was not the drink for me. It was so overly sweet; I had a hard time getting it down. The total came out to around $70 so I think pricing on food was a little expensive but worth it for the experience. They had 90's - 00's hip hop and R&B playing, which I loved. Ordered the chefs special ribeye. It's not a traditional steak. Wanted some soup different than my typical go to ramen and pho and decided to get some Thai soup! I've only had Thai soup a handful of times before, but have kept it safe and so I wanted to venture out of my typical order at a Thai spot. This spot seemed pretty cool as it has a fusion of Thai, hiso, and Lao dishes so I decided to come for dinner on a weekday. Right off the batt the waitress was so kind and informed me that their happy hour would end in 4 minutes and handed me their happy hour menu to order in time if I was interested. It's not often that waiters do this so I found it very thoughtful of her! I ended up ordering the fried chicken skin appetizer because I heard it was popular and due to the happy hour it was $8 instead of the normal $15 price point. It was a whole basket of chicken skin! Freshly fried, hot to the touch and every piece was so crunchy. It airy, with each bite giving that nice crack of the fried skin - it was definitely giving chicharrón vibes! Lots of pieces for sure and it paired well with the sweet chili sauce. 8/10 The soup came out quick and was piping hot, just the way I like it! Also the spice level was perfect. Sometimes at restaurants it's a hit or miss. I love spice but I think I'm traumatized from some places because the medium ends up being like Thai spicy haha. So I decided to play it safe and got a medium and it was exactly that in the best way. The tom kha seafood was delightfully creamy. I've never had soup with coconut milk and it was a great balance of smooth, rich, and spicy! I was also delightfully surprised to see the size and freshness of the scallops (see below for reference, like come on! Those are some fatty scallops!). You can tell they were not that basic typical white small scallops, as they had a more clear, slightly translucent look to them and for me I know that's when scallops are nice and fresh!! Them scallops were literally the circumference of Oreos haha. Pretty good portion for the soup as it came with 2 scallops, 4 calamari, and 4 shrimp. 8/10 The basil fried rice was decent, It was more on the drier fried rice side, which isn't bad but I prefer more of a soft fluffy friend rice. I would probably order something else instead of this for next time. Lord of chilis inside! 6.5/10 Service was very good, waitress was attentive and filled my water without having to ask. Seating is spacious and comfy. 10/10 Saw a table next to me order Thai teas and the cups were so unique and large I was like damn imma have to get that for the next time. With so many Thai restaurants to choose from in Sacramento, it'd be fair to say we had some trouble settling on where to satisfy our cravings. However, once we came across Hiso, our decision became a whole lot easier. Between the great reviews and photos, as well as the fact that they serve Laotian dishes as well, they immediately shot to the top of our list! Located on a quiet, sparsely populated block of 12th Street, Hiso is like an oasis in a seemingly barren area for restaurants (a lot of commercial types of businesses around here). At the same time, it works out great, as there was a ton of street parking along the block. Inside the restaurant, the decor has a hip, industrial sort of look to it with a cute, casual sort of vibe. As for the menu, it's got a little bit of everything...literally. Stretching from apps, soups, salads, and curries to wet and dry noodle dishes, fried rice, house specialties, and desserts, almost every type of offering (and meat) is accounted for, even if there aren't a ton of choices for each. -- LAO SAUSAGE with Sticky Rice...$18 I love Thai sausage, so I was curious to see if this was any different. Probably not all that surprising that it's not, but that was perfectly fine with me - this was so good! The sausage was juicy, spiced well (yet not spicy), and just very flavorful. -- GRILLED PORK JOWL...$18 This wasn't the best one I've had, but I thought this was pretty good. The slices of pork were moist, nicely charred, and were only slightly fatty (some had more than others). Plus the dipping sauce this came with was terrific! -- SPICY STIR FRIED EGGPLANT with Beef...$15 This wasn't quite what I had expected, nor as big, but it was actually pretty solid. The eggplant was cooked well, and I liked the ratio of beef to veggies, but the sauce was a little too sweet (which was surprising, since I expected it to be salty given how dark it was). The one thing that really regret about eating at Hiso was that the two of us were only able to try a handful of things. Word of warning though on the papaya salad, even though we asked for 2 out of 10 spicy, it was more like a 7 out of 10 because no matter how little spice they put in, there's nothing really to absorb or tamper down the thai chili juices. Super scary experience dining around 12:30pm on Sunday 11/9/25. A mentally unwell person came Into the restaurant while it was occupied by my table of 3 and one other table of 3, so practically an empty restaurant. A mentally unwell person came Into the restaurant and started talking to the server and once our server realized he was unstable she went and hid in the back. No where to be found. She left my table and one other table with two young children all alone and unattended in the whole restaurant with a crazy person. He started verbally harassing my family and I and the other table. We felt so unsafe and no one in the restaurant was to be found. When the crazy person left after verbally harassing us for over 5 mins the server conveniently came out of hiding. Horrible experience. Hiso is one of my sister's favorite restaurants. We usually get takeout, but I've dined in the restaurant twice. While I've had Thai before, I've haven't had a lot of Lao food so I was really curious to try it. Lao food is similar enough to dishes that I'm familiar with but still different enough to make it unique. The dining room is a small but very cute area with a minimalist decor. I came with 2 foodie friends so we ordered a little of everything so we can get a feel for their menu. We started with fresh rolls, Lao pho and Lao egg salad. The Lao pho didn't seem to be very different from Vietnamese pho. The egg salad was delicious. I really loved the presentation of mixing the salad to blend all the ingredients. For our main courses, we got the yellow curry, pork ribs w/ sticky rice, salmon bite, mee kati w/ ground pork, and crab fried rice. All the dishes we got were a symphony of flavor. The stand outs were the mee kati w/ ground pork and the crab fried rice. We ended our meal with the mango sticky rice with a scoop of coconut ice cream and thai tea. They served the thai tea in these carafes that ensured we had all the tea we wanted. Service was excellent. Our order was taken promptly and food delivered in a timely manner in the order it was supposed to arrive (i.e. appetizers, main course, dessert) Some places, if you order a lot o dishes they bring them out as they are ready, which means the food is hot and fresh, but it may also mean that you get entrees before appetizers. However, that was not an issue at Hiso. Both times I dined in, I was able to score street parking in front of the restaurant. I've come for pick up on the weekends and parking can be more challenging. All in all, Hiso is an excellent restaurant if you're looking for something other than just Thai food. We were not even finished eating , chewing our food, and the waitress rudely asked if we were ready for the check. We felt rushed and made the food taste without flavor. This was the first time that I've had green Thai tea, and it was delicious! The fragrance and the aroma was different than the traditional black tea one and I really enjoyed it. The larb dishes are delicious, but the size is a bit disappointing. Usually, I expect Lao papaya salad to be a miss (it's either too sweet or sour), BUT this is one of the few times that I've been impressed by the level of execution. My father who's into architectural design pointed out many little details such as the lighting next to the brick wall to create more visual texture. Whereas my mother thought the gray painting of Laos was just abstract painting... the place has the appearance of high end restaurant and definitely feels so. Looking up meaning of Hiso in Laos and it becomes obvious. Food wise there were some highlights and low lights. The highs: Tom kha soup was tasty and I've never had shrimp as crisp and fresh as these before! The butter shiitake mushroom was flavorful and with good texture as well. My mother and I enjoyed the Laos ribeye steak and the dipping sauce is a milder and thinner version of gravy, but for $35 it is steep. My father is a calculated man and did not find value in the steak. He thought it was too tough to chew. Drunken noodle was tasty with great scent of basil. There weren't that much noodle in comparison to other Thai restaurants where quantity is usually expected, but it made the dish light and less carb burden. Salmon bite was also very good with quality fish, unique and flavorful. Lastly, the Lao sausage was very good with good variety in texture and chewy without being too oily. The not so great: My rice that came with the Lao sausage was still wrapped in Saran Wrap inside the bamboo container and I did not like my food in contact with plastic. We were given the choice of Thai and Lao papaya salad and Lao style was recommended. Unfortunately the flavor is very fishy, and off putting. I would try the papaya salad next time to compare. Salad flavor is more preference and not the fault of the restaurant or server, and it's just part of trying new cuisine. So far it feels like it should be 5 stars and ready for a revisit! The minus 1 comes from the restaurant employees showing up 11 minutes AFTER the restaurant opening hour of 11am and 3 groups waited for them outside wondering if it's even open anymore!? Not on time to your own store hours is unprofessional and I feel a loso behavior. Just my personal opinion. Secondly, we were the first to order for a party of 3 and it took them some time to bring out our food. It was just as the limit of almost slow, but the third group waited an hour and left without eating. Beware of slower than expected food service and have some drinks and maybe you won't be disappointed.
