Very friendly cafe with friendly people!! We stopped by during a road trip and it was a great decision. We got the blueberry pancakes and the corned beef hash. Pancakes were nice and fluffy, with blueberry inside and outside very sweet. Corned beef hash was nice and crispy, very tasty and they put peppers in it. Stopped for breakfast this morning and what a HUGE disappointment. We ordered at 9:20 and then watched everyone that came in after us get served. Finally the waitress realizes something is up and asks the cook about our ticket but it can't be found. She then comes to retake our order at 10:15. Says "it happens all the time". Then shouldn't you FIX it?!?!?! The waitress apologized, but that doesn't make it ok. Now almost lunch time and the next place is quite far away. Sadly, this ruins my opinion of this place and I won't be back after coming here for 30 years. read more

Wish we had a better experience. The interior of the restaurant was appropriately decorated and had news articles about the area. Service was okay, they were busy during our visit. We had some basic dishes, some were great and others missed the mark. The biscuit and gravy was bland and had one chunk of sausage rather than being distributed. The chicken fried steak was amazing, as well as the pancakes. The sausage links and patty were also very good. A historic place to visit. Very solid diner! I would absolutely be back, especially if I'm staying again at the motel next door. Some things to note: -they have indoor abs outdoor seating. They get busy and packed but they get them in and out effectively. I ordered the special churro French toast which I was actually expecting something different. It was just your regular FT with a few pieces of churro with it but the cream cheese whip cream def added something to it. Decent coffee. The eggs scrambled soft with cheese were def the star of the plate the eggs were damn good. A bit too much cheese but still it was fantastic egg. The more mature lady was a gem also. We went in today and was pleasantly surprised by the new menu I do love a good steak and egg breakfast but I'm skeptical being no one ever gets my steak right, lol. I have been coming to the Hiouchi Cafe for over 40 years (damn I'm old!) and it never disappoints. As a matter of fact, it's only gotten better over time. Had a lovely "morning after Christmas" breakfast with my family and left full, happy and content. My spinach, mushroom, bacon and cheddar omelette was loaded and perfectly sautéed and cooked, the hash browns were crispy and the rye bread was wonderful. Tasted everything on the table, and all were delicious. The pancake (the size of a tire) was one of the best I've had. A couple of cups of hot and flavorful coffee and I was ready to conquer the day! Unfortunately I forgot to shoot some pics, but you get the idea. If you're in the Cresent City area, make the beautiful drive out to the Historic Hiouchi Cafe. You won't be disappointed! Stopped on our way home and had another great experience! Besides the huge 4-egg omelet my wife ordered I had the Big Hiouchi Platter Cake, a whopping 16" pancake served on a hot pizza pie pan. Fun to eat. We boxed up most of it with half the omelet and gave it to a homeless woman at a rest stop. But that's another story. This is a wonderful place. Easy to just drive by. There aren't too many options in the area, so it's a captive audience for people visiting Jedediah Smith Campground. They could serve much worse food, but they don't. We were in town for a basketball tournament and some friends recommended we try the Hiouchi Cafe for breakfast. It was a little out of our way but it was a nice drive through the trees. There was plenty of seating and the cafe looks like a place where locals and visitors come to relax and enjoy a meal! Our server was very nice, but toward the end of our meal she had disappeared. We never got offered refills on drinks and when we were ready to pay, we waited for a bit for the check to come, but it never did so we just went to the front counter to pay. The meal I ordered, the Breakfast Bowl, was a mountain of eggs, sausage, cheese, potatoes, and gravy in a sourdough bread bowl. It was humongous! In fact, all of the meals were very large. I didn't even make it through half of it and I was stuffed, so I recommend sharing a meal if possible! The Breakfast Bowl was very tasty, and the sourdough bread was actually my favorite part. Absolutely love the small town cafe feel of this place! Located really close to redwood national park and it opens at 7 am, it's a must stop for an early breakfast before heading in for hikes. We were warmly greeted and given the go-ahead to pick a spot. Every table had a great view of the surrounding area. Bathrooms were clean. I made it a point to stop at this historic cafe because of its great reviews and convenient location on Hwy 199 right before entering the Jedidiah Smith Redwoods State Park. Our server was friendly, courteous, and checked in with the crew to confirm they would be able to fulfill our meal requests. Unfortunately, the ice tea didn't taste fresh, the waffles were soft like pancakes, and the chicken was hard as a rock. Would I stop here again? Was a perfect historic restaurant. We stopped for brunch after a few days at the coast. Service and staff was amazing and so was the food.

We stopped her on a road trip and stumbled upon it just as they had closed the restaurant. We asked them if we could grab a quick to go order and the waitress did not hesitate to hand us menus to see what we wanted. The food is delicious and they have excellent service. It is your classic country coffee shop/diner with a woodsy feel appropriate for the area. I had a burger that was very juicy and all the fixings were nice and fresh. I ordered the bun not buttered and no pickles on the burger and they got everything right. Sad because we have never been here before even though we lived in CC for 26 years. Always heard good things about this place. But our experience was way different. Biscuits were burnt on the outside and raw in the middle, and everything tasted like old grease, especially the soggy hashbrowns. A several flies were flying in the dining area. Not to mention the older waitresses thought she was the star of the restaurant to all the local, but when I asked for the check the 3rd time rolled her eyes. Then had one of the other younger waitresses give us the check. Because of this experience we won't be trying their new restaurant on 3rd street. Most amazing breakfast place in a small town of Hiouchi along the 199 HWY to Grants Pass has been around forever with the recent owner taking over the mom and pop restaurant into one of the most popular breakfast special place in a short time. Oh, and the food ways good too! We enjoyed pancakes that were thick and extra chewy, sausage links that were tasty but spiced in an unexpected way, and the breakfast burrito. Sitting at the counter, we had a direct view of the grill and kitchen. So, I can report for a fact based on looks alone that the breakfast sourdough bowl stuffed with eggs and meat, and then smothered in mounds of breakfast gravy, is at least a full days worth of calories in one meal.
