When Shige Sushi closed down we didn't really expect there to be a worthy successor, but guess what? Hito Yatai is definitely that worthy successor. We finally managed to visit last night and we were thoroughly impressed. The interior has been redone in a suitably minimalist style. Very clean and orderly and pleasing to the eye. The service is very friendly and personable. We were told more than once that we were appreciated which felt nice. The real star is the food. We ordered sunomono, veggie tempura, the Hokkaido roll and a special roll (Red and White roll). The sunomono was delicately seasoned and the shrimp were very fresh and sweet. So good. The veggie tempura was nice and crisp and included a couple of unusual ingredients - okra and parsley - which we really enjoyed. The flavors of the two rolls were amazing. No goopy sweet sauces on these, just fresh ingredients expertly prepared and served. We definitely recommend the Hokkaido roll (it's on the regular menu) and I would definitely trust the chef's specials based on last night's experience. This will be our go-to when we want excellent sushi. read more

What a bummer!! Came in with my boyfriend for a much needed sushi date. A large party got seated before us, so we sat at the bar. It was cool to watch, but the sushi chefs seemed more invested in taking shots with the other patrons than getting our order ready. We ordered the potstickers appetizer, dream fish roll, and a 10 piece Nigiri. The dream fish came out, and I wasn't a fan of the flavor- so I sat and waited for the potsticker appetizer which never came out. We had to remind them three times, as they gave it to the patrons taking shots with them on accident, I also tried to order a different roll that they never made. Somehow paid $91 and left barely having eaten. My boyfriend did enjoy his nigiri. Super disappointing. read more

I've been here a couple of times now and can confidently say it'll be one of the sushi spots I have in rotation. The remodel upon change of ownership is nice. I did wish they did not have the lights on so bright as all that artificial blue light messes with the circadian rhythm. I prefer restaurants with a bit of a dimmer setting. However, sitting at the bar helps a little bit with that problem. Fish here imo is on the more fresh side. It is buttery and delicious. I've had sushi where I can taste the ice in the fish and have since been on the search for restaurants that care more about quality than making a large profit. The dream roll was alright. I would probably never order it again. I love the rainbow roll. I've gotten that one every single time. Chu toro and negitoro is a must try here. The Yatai roll was good and what caught me by surprise was the Dragon roll. I normally do not like unagi or dragon rolls for that matter but the way they torched and did just a thin layer of unagi was the ticket! The tonkatsu was a really thick cut of meat and surprisingly cooked tender. We did wish the crust was a bit crispier. Chicken teriyaki was just alright. I'd pick tonkatsu over the teriyaki for sure. Also before I forget, the wagyu asparagus is so delish! Another dish we order each time. Overall, I am happy to have found another small business to support and can't wait to try the rest of the menu this coming year. read more

The interior is clean, modern yet contemporary. The menu is straightforward which shows more focus on the quality of your food more than the amount of selections available. They also have daily specials and their selection of nigiri. We ordered the Croquette, Potstickers, Aged Chutoro, Dream Fish Roll, Rainbow Roll, Dragon Roll, Yatai Roll and Chicken Teriyaki. Every I listed was absolutely delicious. Every roll and dish ordered was unique in its own way and complimented each other. Service provided was amazing and helpful. The timing of each plate was perfect, not rushed at all. It showed the attention of detail of their culinary skills with each plate arriving to our table. We walked in on a busy Friday night and were immediately greeted with a smile and invited to sit at the sushi bar (mind you, we have a two year old and had no reservations). We were a little nervous with how our son would behave, but everyone made us feel so welcome, even the guests sitting next to us. It was a great atmosphere, so great that we stayed a really LONG time ! We chatted with multiple people that came and went next to us, it was so much fun! Along with the amazing atmosphere the food was SO delicious. We tried so many things off the handwritten menu board. Every single thing was super fresh, beautifully plated, and tasted amazing. A standout for me was this beautiful sashimi (apologies, I don't remember the name of the fish) but it had diced fresh mangos and truffle on top. I'm still dreaming about this! The owner and the sushi chef serving us were SO kind to our toddler and even gave him a little sushi hot wheels car they had displayed behind the sushi bar. This place had great reviews so we decided to try it out. Can't say we had the best of experiences so this is my first subpar restaurant review. The food was good but service not so much. Had a 6:30 reservation but place was full and waited 25 minutes to get seated. So what the point of making a reservation! The waitress asked if we wanted to order our meal while waiting and my wife did... big mistake because she was served her meal right after we were seated. Well, my wife wasn't going to start her meal by herself. So her meal got cold by the time ours were served. Waitress should have known not to serve one meal when there were three waiting for theirs. Food also took a long time to get to the table. Meantime, I can see the sushi chef serving customers at the bar (I suppose it was because the bar customer bought the chef a glass of sake so he got the personal attention). Then, the waitress never came back to our table. In fact; never even looked our way as we were trying to get her attention. We ended asking another server for more hot tea. If you know Sacramento sushi then you might get my reference that this place reminds me of early days Kru before they got trendy and upscale. This place doesn't serve run of the mill frozen gyoza and the standard trio of salmon, maguro and hamachi. They have interesting choices of fresh fish of the day served nigiri style. I had nigiri of barracuda (kamasu), ocean trout and toro zuke. These were all served beautifully and tasted fresh! My husband had the dream roll which excluded rice, which was interesting. Our most favorite items of the night were the gyoza and Saikyo Yaki which is their miso black cod. The gyoza were clearly hand made with chunks of ingredients and perfectly cooked. By far, the most amazing star of the show was the Saikyo Yaki black cod. The fish was perfectly prepared, deliciously marinated and absolutely delicious. My husband said that this was the best fish dish he had ever had. We drank their iced green tea, which actually tasted like green tea. The ambience of the restaurant is casual. You'd fit in wearing a pair of shorts or jeans. The restaurant is also small, so I imagine as word spreads about this place we might start seeing it get pretty busy. I've been Chef for over 30 yrs., having studied at The Culinary Institute of America, the top culinary school in the country, and one of the top in the world, where just about every celebrity chef has studied. And knowing it had only been open 3 wks at the time didn't help either. Boy was I wrong. In short: Atmosphere: was greeted warmly and sincerely when entered. Very friendly. The restaurant was clean, bright, and tastefully decorated. Felt very "homey". Food: The sushi chef/owner, went to great lengths to describe and explain the dishes. The restaurant has an extensive selection of fresh fish, and it all looks fresh and brightly colored. Upon arrival, the dishes were masterfully presented and attractive. Each dish tasted fresh and flavorful. Some of the best I've ever had. Price: I was pleasantly surprised at how reasonable their pricing was. 3 specialty rolls, teriyaki salmon, soup, salad, gyoza, tea & beer for $70, inc. tip. The same meal at one of the local "more visible" sushi restaurants, (Mikunis, etc.) would have been 25-30% more. This is now my go-to place for sushi in Sac. Their menu is specially curated with the most freshest fish available by each day so you will see different menu every now and then. We drove 25 minutes to try this place out. We wont be coming to this restaurant again. Both the service and the cleanliness of the facility has not improved with nee ownership. A good sushi, restaurant, should not smell like fish when you first walk in. It appears that the owners made no changes to that. Secondly, we went and waited before the restaurant opened was greeted by the hostess sat down. Waited 20 minutes to be served in an empty restaurant, only for the hostess to wait on the table that came in after us. It's too bad. Because my children will prefer sushi over any other food, and we go tp Mikuni at least 6x a month. I was excited to try a more authentic sushi place.
