A friend suggested we try out Sora Sushi. She has been here before and since I haven't she figured I would like it. I love sushi so I was completely down to try out a new sushi spot. We arrive and we walk in and I notice the restaurant is completely empty. I started to wonder if this place was good? But, I was like whatever I'll try it. We walk in and are immediately greeted and told we could sit anywhere we like. The waitress brings us water and menus. The waitress was friendly and gave us time to order. I ended up ordering a vegan roll and a Philly roll with hot tea and a Sopporo. My friend order edamame and a veggie roll as well. My tea comes first and then our beer and food. My goodness the Philly roll was so fresh and delicious the salmon was fresh and not the smoked stuff. The star however was the veggie roll the avocado and cucumber were so refreshing. This was easily the worst sushi I have ever been served. I previously worked as a sushi restaurant supervisor and have eaten sushi extensively, including in Tokyo, so I don't say this lightly. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I visited on a weekend afternoon and was the only customer in the restaurant, with just one chef and one server present.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I ordered a torched roll. I could hear the torch being applied for several seconds, and when the plate arrived the rice was literally blackened and crunchy from being burned. The albacore on top was stiff and overcooked, the sauce was excessive, and the shrimp tempura inside was soggy. Every component was mishandled -- from ingredient freshness to execution -- and after two bites I felt sick and could not continue eating it. I considered asking for a replacement, but the chef left the restaurant immediately after serving the dish. The server was polite and understanding when I explained I couldn't eat the food, and I left without ordering anything else. I have given this restaurant multiple chances and this was the final one. With several other sushi restaurants nearby, I strongly recommend choosing elsewhere. read more

The service is great, but the food is just subpar. I've been a couple times now when I'm in the area and I may still visit in the future, but I never leave feeling like I had amazing sushi. This is my go to spot for good quality sushi. I always order the pepperfin, which comes over their ponzu sauce that hits the spot every single time. I'm also a big fan of their BBQ albacore, but I always ask them not to overcook it, and when they get it right, it's perfect. My usual order includes three rolls: Nova, Phoenix Kuma, and Spicy Paula. The rolls are fresh, flavorful, and never disappoint. I typically do takeout, but my only complaint is that when I place an order for pickup (usually an hour in advance), I almost always end up waiting another 20 minutes once I arrive for it to be finished and packed. It's a little frustrating since I expect it to be ready at the time I requested. Other than that, the sushi here is consistently solid. read more

A superb sushi restaurant located in a small strip mall. Their sushi rolls are definitely some of the best, freshest, unique, and most affordable I've had in the area with plenty of toppings and filling inside each one. While they have classics like cherry blossom or dragon, we went for some special ones. We tried the Nova, Polar Express, and Spicy Paula and liked them in that order. The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive and during the Olympic season, they have TVs showing the games. There are plenty of tables and their dishware is also really unique! read more

My daughter is an incredibly finicky eater. We constantly try to expand her palette and Sora has been a great place to go. Food is great, especially their rolls. Prices are reasonable. We really love the service, even when my daughter is big on "...on the side...", which they accommodate. We try to go weekly if time permits. Today was my first time that I tried the food along with some of my friends from work at Sora Sushi in Rancho Cordova. All I have to say in 3 words is GREAT food, GREAT service, and GREAT ownership hospitality!! We were immediately greeted by the owner Sun who was the friendliest person you would ever meet and immediately became excited to hear that we were there celebrate a birthday and that it was the first time for some of us. The variety of sushi rolls that we ordered were packed with flavor as we enjoyed every bite. At the end of our meal, we were surprised with a special dessert made with fresh orange slices and whip cream as well as a slice of birthday cheesecake and chocolate moon pie as we sang to the birthday girl. The absolute worst was the Zig Zag hand roll which had brown colored guacamole and virtually no fried crab. On the whole, the food was underwhelming. I've only every ordered delivery here, never dined in. But my experience with delivery and their food has always been positive. They're super quick and their food tastes great. It is also presented nicely and the sushi doesn't fall apart like at some places. They have a fairly large menu and lots of options, which is nice. The miso soup and potstickers are always a regular order for us. Can't go wrong with those two items. Like I mentioned, the sushi is great because it doesn't fall apart and it tastes great. Always door dashed this place so we decided to finally try it in person. Quick fast service. The employees were very friendly and polite! Food was full of flavor! I wasn't expecting it on a wood block so that was a nice surprise. As for ambiance I thought the seats in the middle seemed too close together but it's not so bad because of the barrier. From someone who professionally manages 1700+ meals 3x a day you don't close early. You can close the tables and patio. You can send 3:4 sushi prep home. You leave one and a server who can finish the dishes Then when the 5 of us walk in 40 min before close you would have made enough to fix your bad night. I was craving for sushi so we decided to check this place out as my sister briefly mentioned it one day. We came in at around 7:30pm and it was not super busy at all. Since it was my first time here, I asked our server if she had any suggestions and she told me that the Phoenix roll was one of her favorites. We ended up ordering that roll along with the cherry blossom sub with cucumber wrap, Sora's sashimi and a chicken teriyaki rice plate. We also ordered some sake, but unfortunately they were out of the one we wanted. Brandon notified us and brought out the 2 they did have available. We asked for his suggestion to which he suggested the Kigen. The Kigen was really good. Smooth to the taste and definitely paired nicely with our sushi. The phoenix roll was great and it had a nice charred taste to it. Definitely a roll I would order again. The sashimi especially the salmon was my favorite and you can tell it was super fresh and of high quality as it melted it my mouth. 5 stars for their customer service as it can't be beat! Not only did our server checked on us, Brandon did as well and another server who walked by to help another table also asked if we needed anything else. What made it even better was that as we were getting ready to head out, Brandon walked over to us and handed us another bottle of Kigen to take home since we liked it so much. Dined in with a friend on a Wednesday evening, close to 5pm. There was virtually no dinner rush! We ordered two appetizers, the tofu fries and stuffed jalapeños. For sushi rolls, we ordered the Spicy Paula, Polar Express, and the Aspen. Three out of five items were disappointing, but *especially* the tofu fries. The sauce the tofu fries came with was good, but I wouldn't call them fries at all. Fortunately my friend was with me, and it was kind of humorous that they came out looking like french toast sticks. I love tofu, but these were gross. They aren't consistent either, as other Yelpers posted photos of them being cut to actual fry size, not just slicing a whole block of tofu length wise a few times. As for the other appetizer, the stuffed jalapeños were unique and I liked the plating of them. The stuffed crab on the inside and the Sriracha on top was a nice touch. For the sushi rolls, neither the Polar Express or Aspen really stood out, and they were kind of inconsistent in taste. The only real standout of dinner was the Spicy Paula roll. It was really good, though I wonder if this place can keep the consistency and if it would be as good if I ever came here again for *just* that roll. As of January 2023, the price point here is close to $20 per roll, a basic fountain beverage being $3.50, and appetizers ranging $7-$10, this place is easily $40+ per person. Though, I think if you order a plate, which comes with miso soup and salad, a couple of them range in the $25-30 dollar range, so you would save a few dollars and get more a more rounded meal, versus just two sushi rolls. Between the price and the interior ambience, nothing about this place has me desiring to return or recommend. read more
