This place is yyuuge for a restaurant/bar/karaoke place. Heard the buzz from fellow yelpers about this Convoy location, and I wanted to check the soft opening out. Parking, like all Convoy spots, sucks. It is like winning a mini-lottery. Carpool/uber/lyft. Saturday night at 7pm, there was a small crowd inside, but I observed that it can be quite packed later during the night. There are no great white buffalo sightings here, but they do have Buffalo Trace whiskey, if you are into that. I was greeted with their statues on top of barrels near the entrance. It is a decent bourbon that they use for their old-fashioned drinks. I like their leather couches to wait while being seated. There are a lot of chairs. Dining chairs are comfy too. Arcade machines to make the wait feel short, I didn't bring quarters though. Projector screens, tv's, and the like are scattered, suggesting that you can watch your favorite sporting event here. The menus are in sheet protectors, reminiscent of my high school days. Hopefully they will get proper menus soon when they solidify their lineup. We got a complimentary sparkling wine since we came to celebrate an early birthday (thanks Hive!). Yelp check-in gives you 20% off your order at this time, thanks again! Their offerings are a bit interesting in terms of variety. From pasta, bulgogi fries, and burgers, I am not sure what their focus is. Maybe they are testing the waters out on what items sell well here. Full bar, draft, and wine list. I got the bleu cheese burger with fries and an old fashioned drink. The drink was decently made, wished it came with a stirrer. The bitters were made apparent in the drink. Bleu cheese burger though, at 14 bucks, I was unimpressed with it. Yeah it came with a pretzel bun, but the taste was a bit bland and the sauce with it was forgettable. I would order something else next time. Fries are at least hot and crispy fresh. There are a lot of staff members here, and the service was good! Although there were times that they were bringing food that we did not order haha. It is all good, working out the kinks. Keep in mind though that there was not that many diners in at the time yet. I wonder if the service keeps up though during peak times. I saw a big group of diners doing a social function, this place is certainly big enough for that. Bathrooms are clean and spacious. This place is like a beehive, a lot of different sections that have different activities (bar, karaoke, arcade, restaurant, lounge area.) The happy hour $6 old-fashioned is amazing. SERIOUSLY worth $6. The old-fashioned is made very well (reminds me of Seven grand) I've tried their $1 oysters and could not complain either. I'd probably get these every time. They run out fast so don't be late! As for the fried chicken (Korean fried chicken), there was something left to be desired. The chicken was way too tough..and the pieces were so small! The chicken that all of us got were mostly bone. DISAPPOITING. But I had low expectations so whatever. Chicken Gizzard were okay - we got the deep fried version and thought there was too much batter but still tasted good. Really good beer selections. Come here to drink and snack. HIVE is the new go-to bar in Kearny Mesa! They have tons of karaoke rooms, craft beer & cocktails, fusion food, and a game area (great for men to entertain themselves while the ladies sing). My favorite food items: shrimp fried rice, carne asada tacos ($1 on tuesdays) and the salmon steak over a orzo risotto. As far as beers go, they have a huge selection of craft beers: ninkasi, ballast point, belching beaver, green flash and more! My favorite "barrel-aged" cocktails are the vieux carre (new orleans specialty) and the old fashion #1 (bourbon based). But in the end, was this an awesome main event for my best friend's bachelorette weekend? Yes, yes it was. The drinks were good, the karaoke was super fun, even if the English song list wasn't super up to date, and the staff was pretty friendly and helpful. The service wasn't super on point as they left us for long periods of time without checking on our drinks, etc, but it wasn't a big deal. Overall, if you're willing to go with the flow and ask for what you want, this place is the perfect spot to make some hilarious memories with friends. From what I was told it gets pretty busy on Friday and Saturday nights when they have a live Dj. It wasn't that busy on this Monday night we had stopped by. I tried their Barrel aged old fashioned bourbon and it was pretty much on point! Loved it. I also tried the food. It was their 6 piece fried chicken and the portions were pretty good. It came with a side of fries. I also ordered a side of veggie fried rice that was pretty standard. My buddy had also ordered a bulgogi entree that I tried and that was pretty good. Shout out to one of my favorite DJs, Paul who spins there on fridays and saturdays! Now they have two djs, one of the main room, and one for the dance floor. I love their drink menu, especially since they serve my all time favorite drink, the Vieux Carre! Which is similar to a cross between an old fashioned and manhattan. As for food, its okay. Needs more work, and takes forever to make. And you can also get bottle service here, its about $150 a bottle, depends on what kind of alcohol you get. Let me start by saying I really, REALLY wanted to like Hive. Right now they're still in their soft opening phase, so it's understandable that they'll be working out a few kinks. That being said, this place has a long way to go. I came here last Friday night with a group of 5, and I was super excited to try a cool new place. Located in the same center as Manna, parking is kind of tough but we managed to find a spot relatively quickly. I had called in about 45 minutes before we got there to get a table, but turns out that wasn't necessary because even though there were a decent amount of people, the place is HUGE with tons of seating! The venue itself is pretty cool, very industrial-chic with bare bulbs and draping rope decor. The bar is pretty impressive, spanning the entire length of the restaurant and they had a pretty lively crowd over there. However, so much about this restaurant left my friends and I super confused. First of all, the menu seems to be suffering from an identity crisis. There's a few Korean/fusion dishes, as well as pasta, burgers, and a chimichanga, of all things. Don't get me wrong, I love options as much as the next person, but I couldn't quite grasp what kind of vibe/ theme they were going for here. Our group ordered the Parmesan fries, fried chicken, and the thyme and shrimp pasta. The food was just alright, the fries seemed to be everyone's favorite- the serving was definitely more than enough for all 5 of us to share with plenty to spare. Secondly, the wait staff was nice, but seemed under trained and poorly prepared. We sat for about 20 minutes before someone took our order, and that was after we attempted making awkward eye contact with each and every waiter that passed by lol. Additionally, waiters kept bringing food to us that wasn't ours! It happened 3+ times!! Not a big deal, but obviously management needs to invest in better training for first-time waiters. The music at this place was also headache-inducingly loud!! My friends and I could barely hear each other and while the DJ was good, it was super annoying to have to shout and it definitely killed our vibe. Things that kept it from being a one-star kinda night: the drinks! They have a pretty good drink menu and I really liked the passion fruit mule I ordered: tangy, sweet, and refreshing. I came here twice thinking I would give this place a second chance since the first time I was here the service was horrible and it took me 45 min to get one drink. The second time I came with friends and we reserved a karaoke room. Our server took our order within 15 min of being in the room. Awesome decor, cool games, excellent bar, tons of beers on tap, lots of dishes to choose from, a bunch of tables. I would imagine this place is loud when it's busy! A little too much for my blood. The 2 stars is directed towards the food we tried and for the subpar service. We got the $15 Bulgogi Fries. Bulgogi Fries: Huge portion of Fries, lots of sauce, Little meat, and mostly pieces of fat.... They definitely skimped out on ingredients considering it's $15. I felt like it was primarily fat trimmings that was served. This left me with an upset stomach. Service: We showed the Yelp Coupon for 20% off, and the server quickly said that it for next time use, when it clearly said 20% off now. I asked another server and she kindly helped out. Servers should check the coupon or at least know the specials, discounts offered at the restaurant before making assumptions like this and totally disregarding a customer's plea to get a discount. Karaoke places are hard to come by when you are trying to find just the perfect one however The Hive is a solid place to go for a night of fun with the friends. They have golf simulators, pool, ample amount of alcoholic options and pretty decent karaoke selection. There seems to be a shortage of workers as it takes quite a while to flag down a bartender to help take your order for any of the services at the location. We ordered some korean fried chicken boneless which was pretty delicious along with some crispy french fries. The soju was delicious and not too overpriced as well. In terms of the karaoke, they have a lot of classic good ole karaoke songs but dont really update their list to include new ones that I would have enjoyed singing. They have disco lights in the karaoke rooms and the price is very decent for groups of 4 or more. Came here for dinner and drinks late night with some friends and we called about an hour ahead and got seated right when we got there. Disclaimer this is a review on their soft opening so take it with a grain of salt. We were seated and given water but it took almost a half hour before we were even acknowledged by any of their staff. We proceeded to ask one of their staff who gave us a weird look if he could help us out. He then asked every single person on the waitstaff to come see us and it took ten minutes, followed by a little looking around before we were served. Throughout the night waiters would come to our table with the wrong food orders indicating some sort of organizational problem or undertrained staff. We ordered the Parmesan fries and the fried chicken. Both of these plates were fairly large so good for family sharing, but below average in terms of quality. I found the chicken to be too crispy, the fries were basic, nothing special about either. For drinks we had a large yogurt soju ($25, expensive in my opinion) and my girlfriend had the passion fruit mule which was actually pretty good and came with a slice of pulverized citrus. Halfway through the night, a DJ began to play music deafeningly loud that I couldn't even hear my friend speak who was only two seats down from me. Although, I was feeling the electronic/hip hop mix of music, I just wanted to have dinner and chat with some friends. The best part about this place was the layout of the building, it's a huge warehouse with an enormous bar set up and a ton of tables with a sophisticated decor and lighting. Next time, I would come here just for drinks with some friends and probably not the food. Apparently, it's also a karaoke bar! Hive is an up and coming bar in the heart of Clairemont. The space is huge and can accommodate a large party and more. I came here for a friend's birthday gathering and the party had over 20 people. There was a table that was able to seat us all together, and plenty of open space throughout the restaurant and the bar area. Just judging off of the quality of the service, we can tell that this is a new place and the staff were probably new as well. It took a while for us to wave down someone to take down our order. The food was all right. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich, and the chicken was kind of dry. Glancing at the menu, there were not too many budget friendly options if you're looking for something to keep you full. Overall, I think the group had a great time. Beware, they only accept I think 4 credit cards per check. A huge downside to the place is that the parking lot is very small and oddly shaped. They were playing hip-hop/rap when I was there, so definitely a bonus. Came in and they checked my ID at the door and gave me a stamp.. During their soft opening, they're having 50% off beer ! Yaaaas. They have over 30 beers on their draft list !! Great place to have drinks since they got a FULL bar. Only downside is that parking may be tight tho.. and a lil bit of a bitch. A very modern and hip twist that accompanies the aesthetic rugged building that is the Hive. One thing I noticed when I walked in is that there is SO MANY things going on. They have an arcade room on the left side of the room, bar on the right, DJ banging some tunes in the middle, and 3-4 HUGE TVs with the live basketball game all while being a restaurant with decent food and an open window showing the chefs at work. Don't forget the karaoke here as well, like I said, so many things going on! On to the review, the food was decent. The only gripe I had about it is that I ordered the spicy rice cakes (tteokbokki, $10), and real talk; it took 45 MINUTES until I got it. Other restaurants I've been to has it done in less than 10 minutes. But alas, there's so many things happening and the waiters are running around constantly, I guess I'm not that disappointed... as I'm not really an impatient person anyways. But it was pretty good. I also had just a rum and coke, was nice. My friends ordered a Moscow Mule, Spicy Margarita without the Spice, Midori Sour, and a Burger/Fried rice for their entree. They all enjoyed it and had no complaints. For the damage just know there's only a 3 card max for your group, so if you got a party have some people bring some Jacksons or Benjamins. One more thing I'd like to mention is that sometimes it gets a little rowdy at night. Maybe it's the millennials like me who are trying to be loud and obnoxious, or the older men who are drunk and being too crazy. While we were walking out to another area with our group a guy cut in front of me disrupting our little train. Saw his hand floating to touch my friends lower body like he was going to get a nice grab of melons. If he had touched her I would've beat the living shit out of that Sammo Hung looking fella. But hey, it's convoy. It's a bar. It's hip, it's now. It's where everyone alike can hang out. I'm not asking to up the security, it's just something that irked my night a little. Overall: 3/5. Came here for karaoke, the experience was the worst ever. I knew it was a Korean place so I wasn't expecting too many non-Korean songs, so that part was as expected and I was fine with it. As for food, the bulgogi fries was interesting, and wasn't too bad, I actually liked the combination. The layout of the place though... It's a maze around the karaoke boxes, so you better have your friend come pick you up from the entrance. But that wasn't nearly the worst part. Worst part of the visit - paying. They have service bells for calling waiters. When we wanted to pay, we pressed the bell at least 50 times, waited at least 40 mins, and still no one came. We went out and grabbed the waiters, they said they were coming but no one came for another 20 mins. Finally, they took our cards to process payment. BUT!!! Before we got our cards back, this waitress with a straight garbage face came in to our box and kicked us out with shit attitude because "our time was up" and the next group was waiting outside!? WTF? We wanted to leave like an hour ago, you kept us waiting, remember? The manager came apologizing many times and gave us discount, which I really appreciated (hence 2 stars instead of 1), but that garbage attitude waitress kicking us out with that I-don't-give-a-shit face was really a no no. Interesting concept for a bar/karaoke joint: they purchased the old Chorus bar and made a huge open bar concept with karaoke rooms on the side. It's similar to Min Sok Chon, but more modern in its interior, featuring some big screen TV's and projection screen's for watching sports. At nights on the weekend, the place becomes like a night club. They also serve food and drinks in the main area and karaoke bar. Ambience is nice here. It has a huge open area in the main bar and it's looks clean and modern. The karaoke bar has a huge song list. Downside is the rooms are quite small and very poorly ventilated. Other downside is that at the main bar on weekends, there seem to be a lot of thuggish unsavory types who show up and start fights. Service is super slow and the waitstaff/front host are also a bit snippy at times. Food and drinks are ok, just overpriced. Why would I pay so much for this when I can BYOB/S at other karaoke bars? I'd give the place 3 out of 5 stars. A bit more ventilation in the rooms, some efficiency and attitude improvement of the waitstaff and dropping the prices would make the Hive much more of a place I'd like to spend my weekend coin at. read more

First and last time I will be going to this establishment. The service was incredibly slow and the bartenders kept ignoring us despite us trying multiple times to get their attention. In addition, I ordered food and it was never delivered to me. They went ahead and gave it to another costumer for "free." I attempted to get a refund for the food but even that seemed like a difficult task for the staff. The owner eventually refunded a partial amount which at that point I just accepted since I just wanted to leave and not deal with them anymore. To make matters worse, a few days later I checked my bank account and noticed that I was charged a second time. So what was the point of refunding me money if they were planning on charging me again for items that I never received. Went in with a group, and we got checked in quick, it was not busy at all, there was maybe 1-2 more groups doing karaoke in the rooms, so I can only imagine how busy they could have been. Once it came to do the bare minimum of show us the run around of things we were mostly set but had some extra questions and we had the misfortune of dealing with associate Gabriel, dude had a very rushed and bothered attitude with any questions that required more than bare minimum effort. When asked for what they had to drink on beers and man said "which one do you want" as if we knew what they had, hence the question, he couldn't even be bothered to guess the name of any drink they had to show some decent service. Every interaction with him was very limited because his attitude was short and bad that nobody wanted more to do with him in complete honesty. His presence as a server supercedes the food which was hot and tasty, quality was there so thanks to the kitchen for their had. If it wasn't for Gabriel, and others who apprently also have an attitude problem from different reviews, this would have been a nice outting, kinda killed the vibe overall. This review is mainly for the karaoke experience. After seeing how huge this bar is, I wouldn't mind coming back just to hang out. We came here with a group of 15 people for a friend's bday party. For starters, the service button in the room was broken (they didn't tell us) so for the first 15-20 minutes we were just waiting for them to show up to take our order. A few of us went to the bar to order and found out that the button was broken then. They never once came to the room to check on us, we had to keep leaving to get drinks or food. They were also under staffed at the bar so it took a while just to get a couple of beers on tap. I've had a much better experience at the karaoke rooms in Min Sok Chon and will definitely recommend them over Hive. read more

This place tries too hard to be the "hip & happening" spot, when in fact, the overall vibe is very confusing. It's part karaoke, part sports bar (large projection screens showing games) and part club. The "club" seemed like a warehouse connected to the main space - little janky imo, BUT could be fun if your group is looking to dance afterwards. Pros: - Large space, good for big groups. - The large soju was good for sharing. Cons: - We ordered the popcorn chicken & calamari - NOT WORTH IT. Awful, dough-y breading, extremely greasy and not what you'd expect at an Asian fusion spot. - Drinks were only alright, nothing spectacular. - Service wasn't great either - it took us a good 20 min to get anyone to take our order. Worst service, do your karaoke at home or anywhere besides this place. So rude and we were willing to eat, sing and drink. Please teach your workers to treat others with some respect. I went to HIVE on a Friday night and this was my first time there. There was a large group of us. First off, we weren't greeted by any one and we even walked through the bar and the many hallways trying to find our karaoke room. It was confusing and not easy without guidance. Once we found our room we had a great time. One of the waiters was really cool and nice. The other one was very rude and even tried ending our session 1 hour early. After we straightened that out he came back an hour later and basically said get out because I need the room. We spent a lot of money on drinks and food so all of us were kind of turned off by that approach. Overall it's fun but the service could be much better. The bartender (the only female we saw working Friday night) was very kind, helpful and provided a nice experience. I would come back but never again if my second visit goes the same way. Came here for dinner on a Friday night around 6pm. Was thoroughly surprised at how much ROOM this place has. It's very nicely done with decor and had a welcoming atmosphere. Would be a great place for a party. During the time we entered and left (about 1.5 hrs), there were only about 5 other tables that were filled, so it looked pretty empty since the space is so big. Regardless, we ordered some food and drinks. We were there during their Happy Hour and they had $1 oysters and 20% off beers. We ordered nachos, which were delicious cos they actually used nacho cheese. And there were chopped jalepenos as well as a lil bit of bulgogi in it. Not sure it's worth $14 tho, but still delicious. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich. i wasn't wowed by this one at all. While the chicken was super tender and juicy, there was just way too much batter and it made me feel gross eating it. Garbage. Complete and utter garbage. Took about 45 min to get checked in to our karaoke room. Drinks took a while to get ordered and delivered. Big default was the sound system kept cutting in and out. Also management didn't do a dang thing when we were waiting or trying to get the sound fixed. Completely upset about the service and care of the owner and management. Tried to pay us off in shots of alcohol for being 40 min late for our reservation and awful service. Hi, we have come to hive monthly for Karaoke. Every experience has been great except for this particular night. We were ignored by the hostess as we walked in and tried to approach her. We waited while she had helped others while my party has asked her multiple times for a room. She was unclear about the times saying it was until 10:30 or 11. She finally decided it was until 11. She had told us our time was up until 11 pm and she would notify us when our time was up. Around 10:45 she came into our room and as we were packing up to leave she aggressively raised her voice to tell us our time was up when we still had 15 minutes. She continuously gave attitude and was slamming the door open. Also she was on her phone as customers were trying to approach her which was highly unprofessional and inattentive to guests. The highlight of our night was our service by Christian. His service and hospitality would be rated 5 stars . He was attentive, professional, and was so friendly. If it was not for his service, we would have cancelled our kareoke room. It is the service by these staff like Christian that keep us coming back to hive. I hope this hostess at the front is talked to management, the service has ALWAYS been great except for our encounter with the lady in the picture.
