I won't come back here again I was really disappointed, the food was terrible. The meat and shrimp inside Wonton were sour, even Wonton wrappers was not fully cooked. I suspect the meat in this Wonton is not fresh at all, and even seasoning can't hide its sour taste. From the picture, you can see that the chicken wing bones are covered with blood. I seriously believe that chef can't cook at all. You fried the wings without thawing them, so there was blood on the inside of the wings. I just played badminton today because I was tired and hungry. I still finished eating chicken wings, but I couldn't eat Wonton. The sour smell made me want to vomit. I used to love eating Wonton here, but now I don't even want to give you one star. This cafe is a full blown Cantonese style restaurant. I love their staff; patient, helpful and happy. The ambience is welcoming and we were seated in a private section which is delightful. Now for the food...we have to find a restaurant that pleases 3 different palates. My husband and I are elated when our family enjoyed the dishes; Roasted duck, salt and pepper wings, chicken and abalone porridge, deep fried tofu with peanuts, shrimp omelet, deep fried calamari. Their food has always been good. They added a few more outdoor seatings and added a menu delivery/takeout menu. They still have their normal menu, but they added family meal sets now. I don't think those sets are on the delivery apps though. But I'm guessing they also offer their own delivery? My go to at this place is always their roast duck. So juicy, tender, and delicious. I almost always get their porridge too. I've tried maybe a little more than half of their bbq items and so far everything's been good. After my visit, I'm confident that Ho Kee is here to stay (at least a little longer than the previous tenants!) Ho Kee is like what Sam Woo BBQ used to be. I've seen this place when I drive by on the street and thought to stop by and try it out. Parking is shared among the other businesses in the Arcadia Center; it's right next to the Big Lots. We came on a weekday during lunch and there was no wait. It looks like they have a digital waitlist in place similar to the Yelp one. Since the place was pretty empty, we didn't get to use it. After being shown to our table, we tried to figure out what we wanted to eat. The staff seemed pretty anxious to take our order because they kept coming by to ask if we were ready; majority of the time, we were not. The decor of the place looked fairly modern with lots of lights and glass walls. The kitchen area was interesting as it had an Asian looking facade. Restrooms are located to the right of the kitchen. We ordered the following: - Beef Chow Fun (dry style): it was pretty good and was lightly salted. - Yang Chow Fried Rice; needed a bit more seasoning since it was bland. - Beef Stew Noodles; not very flavorful but the beef was soft and tender. Very tasty. Half Roasted Duck: A One of the better ducks I have had, I like how it was not over roasted on the skin and the meat was pretty tender, and packed with lots of flavors. Came here for New Year's Eve because it was open but for good reason. Their food was mediocre at best. I was super excited to try their chashu pork since they have a large bbq section and it was not very good. Pork was extremely tough and hard to eat. I was eyeing this on yelp all night since they also have their famous chashu butter bun but nope extremely hard to eat. Also did not have a honey glaze. French style beef was bland to me. Don't get me wrong the beef was very tender but it needed that black pepper sauce you to flavor it up you know. I also tried their fried fish bifongtang style and I would stick with the regular salt and pepper. My fave had to be the fried tofu. Nothing wrong with this and super yummy!! This place is low key awesome. The food might not be pretty to look at, but it's outright one of the most delicious food you'll ever love. Some of the most delicious southeast Asian food you'll want to order is at this place. The place get mad recommendations from everyone for BBQ pork and such, but I can tell you that you'll missed out if you don't order their roast duck. That is probably the best roast duck you'll ever get. There are other plenty of great dishes here. Such as their popular Crispy Beef Brisket. Think brisket cut in the perfect bite size that get deep fried. It pretty much melts in your mouth like butter. Speaking of butter... one of the hottest trend in the past few years in the food festivals circuits are the butter in a bolo bun (think pineapple bun variety). The buns on this is not bad, but what makes it up is the addition of their BBQ Pork with the butter. I never thought it was going to be this good, but boy was I so wrong. It was fantastic! Overall, there are many other types of dishes, such as noodle soup bowls, fried rice, and other "congee" type dishes. Big recommendation is get their BBQ dishes and get their crispy beef briskets. Thank goodness for businesses that open early on weekends. We came at 8:30 on a Saturday morning because it was quick, easy, and the San Gabriel location didn't open until 9. I'm surprised and glad that so many of my favorite restaurants are opening up another branch in Temple City. There seems to be a good handful around Baldwin and Las Tunas. The Arcadia Ho Kee location is much fancier looking. They even have private party dining rooms and glass light fixtures. Luckily the prices are the same. There's a good-sized parking lot for the plaza and ample seating since we came so early. I think the service is better here than the San Gabriel location. The servers don't look away and ignore you (which happens sometimes at the other place). These servers, although equally busy, kept eye contact with their customers. I would recommend giving this location a try, especially if you're like me and hate waiting in lines. read more

A new review and of course, a new restaurant to dine at. Big Lots! is next to Ho Kee Café and across the street from them is Arco Gas Station on Baldwin Avenue and Las Tunas at the Temple City/Arcadia intersection. Parking: Free and spacious! Upon entrance, we were immediately greeted and seated. After browsing through the menus, here's what we got: Drinks: Iced water. Refill is only by request. $1.50 Rice per bowl: Rice does not accompany any of the lunch dishes. You might want to order plate of fried noodles or fried rice to help supplement along with your other dishes. This really irked my Mom. The dishes were not only overpriced, but also tasted salty to her, especially, the duck. She had brought this to our main server's attention and told him how disappointed she was. Our server was kind and understanding and gave us a complimentary bowl to help ease down the saltiness (that was really sweet of him!). $8.95 Beef Stomach Noodle Soup - The strips of beef stomach (tripe) were plentiful, good and tender. The noodles were also plentiful, but a bit al dente to our liking. The bok choy needs to be cooked a little longer because the ends were hard to bite off. The broth tasted light at first, but the sodium aftertaste hits you pretty hard afterwards. $13.95 Roast Duck (Half Plate) - Mom and I both agreed that the skin needs to be crispier. The skin tasted hard and chewy for my Mom and she ended up spitting it out. I was fine with it, but I do agree, the crispier, the better. The duck meat was at least meaty and juicy. However, the roasted duck was really salty, especially, since there was a lot of roasted duck juice poured over and underneath. Thank goodness for the sweet and sour (with a tiny kick of heat) plum sauce. It was good to try here, but Sam Woo still wins our loyalty. $15.95 Crab Meat w/Seasonal Veggies: The bok choy needs to be boiled longer. Again, the ends needed to be cut off because biting off the leaves were a bit difficult. Furthermore, some of the bigger pieces needed to be chopped down to smaller pieces. The crab meat was flavorful and generous. I ended up pouring the sauce over my rice. Dessert: Complimentary orange slices. This was brought out after I went to the restroom. My Mom ate some and said they weren't sweet. I didn't eat any after that comment and I had just washed my hands. $13.95 House Special Chow Mein - We took this home for dinner and we didn't like it. The noodles tasted gross with so much oil saturation (even after draining it all out). The shrimps tasted bland and rubbery, while the gai-lan stalks tasted old and chewy. The only decent thing about this dish was the remaining toppings: chicken, char siu, octopuses and squid pieces. Service: Our main server was nice and friendly. Our dishes came out within a good and timely manner. However, once they got a little busier, flagging down any server became a hit and miss. Our server was attending to other tables and so we couldn't get ahold of him. We were then able to flag down the Host and he boxed up our leftovers at the table. Upon leaving, our main server said goodbye to my Mom (I was already out the door) and hopes to see us again next time. Ambience and Décor: Clean and pretty, main dining room. Larger parties are placed in the private dining room. The tables in the main dining room are pretty close to one another and so you might be rubbing elbows with your neighbors. Families with rambunctious, little kids need to make sure they sit still so that they don't run into the servers with hot plates and/or bumping into the other neighboring chairs and tables. The Women's Restroom is clean, nicely stocked and maintained. Overall, I can definitely say that this place is a step up from the San Gabriel location. I won't rule this place out completely yet. I've eaten at Ho Kee a countless amount of times for brunch, and I really like the combos. There is nothing particular special about the coffee or milk tea options that are included, but I am always a fan of the rice noodle rolls, porridge, and simple wonton noodle soup. The rice noodle rolls contain more texture than other restaurants because it is wrinkly instead of flat (see pics). Although this makes for a less neat appearance, I believe it feels better this way. Taste wise, I found it to be on the blander side. The porridge has always been consistently thick, which is a pleasure since some restaurants may service porridge that is runnier and watery. The wonton in the wonton noodle soup taste normal, and the noodles are always crisp, making each bite a satisfying one. The broth however, tastes like soy sauce water. Our table also ordered the duck, which many Yelpers have commented on. Unfortunately, I did not try it, so I cannot comment on the duck. read more

This is a much nicer location than San Gabriel, and I really enjoyed our secluded table right behind the front desk. The glamour kind of reminds me of Longo Restaurant in Rosemead, but much more convenient, but smaller. The Peaking Duck here is delicious and the Duck meat is provided at the end with a nice orange sauce; my son took it for lunch the next day! Other amazing foods included the little appetizer sandwiches of butter and Char Siu. Any of their meat dishes are excellent, and their vegetables fresh and a little spicy as well. I would certainly like to try their pasta and rice dishes to see if it also qualifies for perfection. I really appreciate the clean and contemporary decor, which makes me feel so good after a long day at work. We came here last Friday with a party of 20. It was a last minute reservation, and boy did they come through! We got our own room, including a small kids' table. The server was amazing. He took our orders quickly and was so friendly with my Dad. We got a ton of dishes, including a pretty steamed fish and 5 pounds of giant prawns. Silly, some prawns had eggs still attached to them! We came here for dinner during Mother's Day weekend, so yes it was crowded and we had a long wait. Once seated, we ordered quickly since we had time to decide during the 1.5 hour wait. The food came out swiftly and I was pleased with the quality and taste of the dishes. The string beans had a good snap to them and weren't oily and wilty. The house special tofu, walnut shrimp, and duck were delicious. The fried fish fillet was light and crispy. Our only complaint was that the rice was dry and stale. We mentioned it to a waiter and they were apologetic and rectified the situation promptly. I would come back again to try breakfast and more dishes. A few weeks ago we visited one of our favorite Chinese restaurants called Mr Chopsticks for a banquet with my wife's immediate family. Although most of the dishes were decent, we could tell that the quality of some of the dishes have gone downhill. Hence, we began to explore new options for restaurants that are good for large Cantonese style banquets. We decided to give Ho Kee Cafe a shot. Our experience here exceeded our expectations. The restaurant itself is not too large and parking can be a little challenging, but we managed to find a curbside spot in the parking lot (not sure if it was legal). The restaurant is brightly lit and every guest and staff member appeared to be following good guidelines for Covid. Seating is in large round tables with a large lazy susan in the middle. The kitchen area is visible behind a large glass so one can get a glimpse of the cleanliness of the cooking area. Speaking of cleanliness, I believe the construction of this place is probably fairly new as the restrooms are pretty modern looking and clean. The restaurant also offers free Wi-Fi, although it appears that their current password was not working at the moment. Menus are extensively illustrated in laminated pages and there is a special menu book for preset meals if you don't want to fuss with assembling a bundle of a la carte items. I uploaded pictures of all the dishes we ordered and it appears that the cooking staff hit the mark on all the dishes. There is ample choices for non-meat eaters like myself, although I took small samples of the meats for the sake of evaluating their quality. The fried tofu is nice and crispy without the shell feeling too oily or heavy. One of my favorite dishes there was the snap pea and lily bulbs stir fry, the latter item being a rare offering AFAIK for Chinese restaurants. Our kids who can be finicky, loved the wonton noodle soup and the fried rice. Service was pretty attentive throughout the meal. However, I was a little bit disappointed towards the end when our promised red bean dessert took a little long to arrive. I didn't complain much as this was a complimentary treat for our party. Overall, a nice place to hang out with guests (we had out of town relatives from New York as our special guests) if you are looking for a clean place to eat Cantonese style dinner. They serve overnight rotten food!! And this is not the first time! It also happened to a few of my family members and some friends! I called in for take out and when my husband brought it back, the duck was spoiled.. As I was deboning parts of the duck pieces for my daughter, I kept smelling a rotten stench. I visited Ho Kee in Arcadia for a dinner gathering with friends. I heard that the place is popular for roasted duck and the wait is about 30 minutes. Actually the wait is about 5 minutes. Let's begin with the delicious seafood-king crab! We ordered king crab to make 4 dishes out of it. They are steam King crab legs, garlic pan-fried king crab body, steam egg on shell, and fried crab meat in rice. That's one of the best I had in years. The next favorite item is their in house roasted duck. The meat is juicy! And the skin is crispy! You got to try it yourself. Especially when the roasted duck fresh out of the oven. I must say all the dishes are very good. But most surprising for me is the large fish head herbs soup. It's full of flavor and it's like homemade long-heated style. Hubs had been wanting to come back to Ho Kee since we first went to the San Gabriel location 6 years ago. 6 years later, we managed to come back but to the Arcadia location. Upon entering, the restaurant is big, but not too large. The dining area appears to be split up, as there are glass walls surrounding some of the tables. The walls are covered with paintings, with a TV screen placed near the corner of one of the walls. The back wall is brick with slight "rooftop" edges placed over it. The kitchen is also visible to customers as well. At the back of the restaurant is a window that allows you to watch the cooks make the meals. This window also has a place where roasted ducks are kept. We ordered E22- Tofu Family Style. It was nicely fried and crunchy. Hubs loved it. crunchy on the outside and supple and soft on the inside. Daughter loved it and thought it was nice and puffy. She loved the deep fried tofu with a passion. Next, we had C26- E-Fu Noodles- simple mushroom and soy. Hubs thought it was ultra delicious. Finally, daughter and I shared C21- Minced Beef and Raw Egg Rice- daughter and I loved it. Hubs was on Lent and salivated over it. We loved the raw egg and stirring it with the minced beef. As a native born Konger, I give this place a pretty high rating for Hong Kong cuisine. First there is no wait even though it's packed. They are pretty good at getting the food out fast so the turnaround time for each table was pretty quick. For a traditional Chinese restaurant, this place is stylish decorated and comfortable to sit at. Food 1.) Pork Butter Bun- 3/5 stars. Delicious for what it's worth ($2), but could be heated more so the butter would be more melted inside. The crust was done well though. I hate it when pork butter bun's crust falls everywhere which indicates it's an old bun, but this place you can tell the bun was freshly made. 2.) Roast duck- 5/5 stars. We ordered the plate portion which is $9.95, totally worth every penny. This is considered cheap for any Chinese bbq dish. The duck was juicy, tender, and flavorful. 3.) Foie gras goose liver yi mein- 4/5 stars. This isn't a normal traditional Cantonese dish, but they did well on this. The goose liver flavor isn't too strong, but is mixed well with every strand. The noodle has an amazing texture, extremely bouncy. The milk tea and lemon tea were good, free refill as usual.
