Ho Wah Chinese restaurant makes some of my favorite Szechuan dishes like Ma Po Tofu, Szechuan Beef, and their Green bean in Garlic sauce is a memorable experience for your palate. I appreciate that there is no MSG added to their food. Great lunch specials and they reopen for dinner after a day of shopping or hiking along the Monterey peninsula. Decided I wanted some Chinese food to take home. Well I regret ordering from this restaurant. The hostess at the register isn't very friendly and when I picked up my order she didn't even say thank you. I had the very basic food which consisted of chow mein, broccoli beef and fried rice. The chow mein was very oily and tasteless and the fried rice also had no flavor. The broccoli beef tasted ok but the broccoli was to under cooked for my liking. I eat at Ho Wah regularly. The food is delicious. I highly recommend the Salt and Pepper Shrimp, chicken, ribs, or fish. Among my favorite dishes are the Spicy Orange Chicken, Combination Sizzling Rice Soup, and the House Special Fried Rice. I cannot resist the Fried Crab Wontons, or the Sesame Balls. The restaurant is very clean, and the staff is so inviting. This is the best Chinese food on the Peninsula. All of cooked from fresh ingredients and no MSG. read more

Mongolian beef was all onions. Potstickers undercooked,barely tan on one side ..dough seemed raw, and again no taste. Sweet and sour was ok but not great. I heard owner yelling at a young lady working after we gave the young lady tip personally and the owner took it from her saying she "stole". I told her it was for the young and she said she would get it later but it went into her pocket. While the owner was yelling we heard some very prejudice comments that had nothing to do with the work environment. Completely unprofessional and we saw the poor girl crying as she finished cleaning up the entire dining room by herself! Food was also very bland and extremely over priced. Waitress with the glasses was very sweet and stayed professional and continued to check on us. Will never go back due to this experience. I tried. I can't. So nasty. Where do I start? It's overpriced bland food. Paid $50 for the family #2 box. Delivered on time. Food was right so I gave the guy a $5 tip. Halfway through our meal my daughter pulls out a HUGE hair that was clearly cooked in with the orange chicken. I have had past issues with this restaurant not securely storing my card information. On delivery orders they take your credit card number. Write it down and doesn't process it then and there. 1 day after I purchased with their restaurant I had fraudulent charges elsewhere in marina, I am NOT saying they stole my card info. It is likely it was left somewhere or visible in trash and someone obtained it. So I ordered today and paid cash...$50 for hair and orange chicken. Just call noodle bar. So I've ordered food a couple times from here. Super disappointed this time. First they are out of sizzling rice soup, I understand the time it goes into making those rice cakes. So I ordered the egg drop soup, NEVER AGAIN. The soup was a congealed mass that had no flavor. It was BLAND BLAND BLAND. Basically tasted like cornstarch slurry. I also ordered chicken chow mein Hong Kong style with gravy, chicken and bok choy only. Why waste all the other vegetables if I know I'm not going to eat them? What I end up getting are chopped up squares of pan fried noodles that are nice and golden on one side and completely burnt on the other. Didn't realize until I ate a couple pieces and taste the horrid burnt bottom. The gravy was so watery it was like the consistency of soup. I only ate about three pieces of the noodles and tore off the golden parts and discarded the burnt. Thankfully I have noodles that I can cook up at home to salvage this, and hopefully I can thicken the sauce. The amount of noodles provided for the cost were small. Spent about $20, including the $2.00 upcharge for pan fried burnt noodles. The free sesame balls were slightly overcooked, the sesame took on a dark color. Oil was probably too hot or left in too long. My prior experience was oily food. Hard to find good chinese restaurants. Everyone seems to lack quality. read more

Stopped in today after shopping at the Asian market next door, and the food was an amazing surprise. I've lived in China for years, and my girlfriend is Cantonese, so we're very particular about Chinese food and often disappointed. But this place blew our mind. We only tried two dishes, but both of them were really something special. The Salt and Pepper Wings--The name doesn't sound like much, but these may be the best fried chicken you'll ever have. It's a variation a Taiwanese dish, "yansuji", and a very good one. Really just awesome, and you get a very generous serving for a good price. House Special Wonton Soup--Most Americans probably think of wonton soup as a filler dish, but not here. It starts with house-made chicken stock, and about a dozen very good Wontons. My girlfriend was especially impressed with these: they're massive, packed with flavor, and perfect in the broth (which has a very Cantonese vibe to it). It's a very American take on the dish in the best way, as the Wontons are mixed in with a massive helping of chicken, pork, barbecued pork, and shrimp.
