Really enjoy the food here. Everything taste very fresh and flavorful. The Orange Chicken is authentic and delicious. The Salt and Pepper Wings are the BOMB! Love them! We were visiting town for a long weekend. Stopped by Ho Wah for our fix of Chinese food and weren't disappointed. They were able to serve up the dumplings boiled/steamed as opposed to fried which was great. Ordered 2 chicken dishes over rice which had similar flavor/sauce -- Chicken with Broccoli and Chicken with String Beans. They were both very tasty. Chicken was tender and the veggies not over cooked. The sauce was a brown garlic sauce - on the sweet side of savory, but delicious! The kids were happy to get fortune cookies at the end. read more

Ordered the mu shu pork, teriyaki chicken, chow mein, and egg fried rice. Standouts were the mu shu pork and feriyaki chicken.. pork was super flavorful and not too salty with lots of meat and tasty sauce. The chicken was super crispy, which was unexpected but tasted really good! They even packed the sauce separately so it wouldn't get soggy. HUGE portions. The food is the best Chinese you will fin in Marina and surrounding. the price, either they need to update their online menu or then are skimming $1.00. I ordered by phone. BBQ Pork Fried Rice, Sweet & Sour Pork, and Pot stickers. I was quoted $31.95 for delivery. I asked what the delivery fee was and was told $3.00. Based on their current (03/03/2018) prices on their online menu. Looking for a place to eat dinner after an all day study session at CSUMB, this was far more than I expected. Looked over the menu, they had a great selection but kept coming back to the specials menu. Seafood delight (hope the name is correct ) was delicious! Aug 5, 2018 Very unpleasant experience walking in the door. Young man said "we're closed in 10 mins. That put me off. Then an older woman came with a pouty attitude and the young man continued- but we can do take out. She took my order with distinct resistance. Auuughhh!!! I just got home from a commute and was tired and hungry. I worked in a restaurant and I never gave rude service or made someone feel like they were inconveniencing me like this woman did. Terrible attitude she served me. If I weren't so hungry I would have left. They're food is sooo good too! This was only my 3rd time there. Plus I pull out my card to pay and she curtly says do you have cash? I motion to look through my bag but I'm already miffed..,so I ask "why do you not take cards? (I've eaten there twice before and paid with a card). And she continued her momentum with "we prefer cash" I wanted to argue that there wasn't a sign that said that. What's worse is a couple came in right at closing and she turned on the charm for them. What?!! So unhappy. read more

Me thinks not! Really! I ate at this place once, and twice ordered takeout. I think if I decided to open a Chinese restaurant, my food would taste a lot better, and I don't even know how to cook Chinese. You may wonder why I ate here 3 times if I thought the food quality was horrible, well, it's because my boyfriend is from Long Island, NY, and apparently they are not as picky over there as us San-Franciscans... Anyhow, here's what we had there: fried rice (dry and disgusting), Mongolian beef (smelly and disgusting. Oh and beef tasted nothing like beef, more like dirty socks. I have never eaten dirty socks, but I imagine this is what they would taste like), orange chicken (over-fried and disgusting). The only two things that I thought were decent enough were their won ton soup and mushu pork. We usually feed leftovers to our dogs but i was worried that they would have diarrhea because of such bad food quality... Oh and let me mention, my boyfriend once called in while he was driving home from work. They said the food would be ready in 20 minutes; however, when he showed up, turned out they lost his order and he had to wait. And they weren't even that busy to lose anything... This restaurant just got taken over by new management and boy has it changed. The food is great the service is excellent! Very friendly staff. We had chicken fried rice, chicken chow mein, and broccoli beef. also ordered two different soups, my mom the wonton soup which she liked said surprisingly had lots of wontons instead of just one or if your lucky two at most restaurants. I got the the sizzling rice soup which i loved! I haven't have it in years. We both ordered smalls which I thought would be little cups and when our soups came out they were like mini bowls. Went back tonight 9/20 to get an order to go since I had a bunch of leftovers from last night. Ordered the salt and pepper wings, they were GREAT! great flavor the batter was perfect and fresh and hot. If you appreciate good Chinese food, one of the first things you will learn when you move to the Monterey Peninsula area from the San Francisco Bay area is the lack of affordable and good quality Chinese restaurants in the area (especially Dim Sum!). Over the years, we have tried different Chinese restaurants in the Monterey Bay, and have not found a place we consistently liked. We ate at Ho-Wah several years ago and was disappointed and did not come back until we heard about the new owners / new management and Chef. So we gave it another try, first for lunch and then for take out, and so far, big improvement on the taste and quality of food! As other Yelpers have pointed out, the green been dishes are terrific, and I am also a fan of their salt and pepper pork ribs. Though many reviews mention the eggplant combo positively, I found it to be overly sweet & oily, and will not be ordering it again. However, based on our 2 visits, we will continue to try out different menu items. Note, in the SF Bay Area, Ho Wah would have received 3 stars, but considering the lack of good quality, reasonably priced Chinese restaurants in this area --- and going into North Monterey County in particular --- I am giving this restaurant 4 stars. A very surprising find in Marina, most Chinese restaurants in the area are run by Koreans, don't get me wrong they're making decent food, just not very authentic. But even the few in the area aren't Cantonese. But Ho Wah is both! They actually make wonton noodles w/ the proper thin egg noodles. They have Cantonese dishes like salt and pepper pork chops w/ the authentic flour and not the popular beer batter method. Portions are large, but I always order too much. I would recommend family style ordering, so bring friends. Lunch is around $6, rice, soup, dish. Dinners are around $10. Food's good, but not amazing. This restaurant is really good!! My friends and I were planning on going to Jim's. However, as fate would have it, it was closed. We decided to check out Ho-Wah, and we were blown away by the awesome service we received from Decen. She's really nice!! We ordered from the lunch special and let me tell you, we definitely got our money's worth. I especially recommend the asparagus dishes and the orange chicken. They were delicious :D Decen gave us sesame balls instead of the fortune cookies others got. She was happy to have students from CSUMB dining at the restaurant. Sometimes I have cravings for bad Chinese food. Like really bad cheap Chinese food. Often, late at night. And there's definitely no shortage of that anywhere in Marina. Ho-Wah is one of those fine institutions. Except they have such cruddy service! (And I really do like bad Chinese Food--it's weird) Honestly, I picked up the phone for their delivery service and the lady started to yell at me. It made me so uncomfortable that I had to hang up the first time. I got the nerve (plus I was too lazy to cook) to call again and she was still yelling. I inquired about the food, and she just kept yelling "$20 minimum!" In my head I was like: "yes, I can still hear the echoing of your voice...can I please just ordered my freaking food?" Then she kept insisting my order was $12.00 and I ordered three things. I told her to recalculate and she was like "fine, only $23.00." Talk about service. And she was just so rude and terrible. 1 1/2 hours later the delivery guy calls me speaking in indecipherable English asking me where I live. And I'm not just being a racist asshole, I've dealt and been kind to thick accents. I like the challenge. But hell, I really couldn't understand what he was saying from the thick accent to the the terrible signal. Then two hours later, he shows up at my door knocking loud as hell. He literally shoves the food into my arms and takes the money, that I haven't even counted yet. Just wow! Horrible nights on both ends I suppose. However, I've eaten in here years ago and they were decent. Chicken wasn't too over cooked. Vegetables were identifiable--somewhat. Okay, service but I still felt like they were staring at me. Loved Ho-Wah!! Tried it for the first time yesterday and I will definitely be going back. We were 5 people, and one of the girls in our party is actually from Hong Kong so we were extremely pleased when she said it all tasted as authentic as back home. The dishes we had were: Beef Chow Fun (AMAZING!), Garlic Chicken (Spicy but so tasty), Pork fried rice, salt and pepper fried squid, walnut shrimp (to die for) and a few other dishes. The portions are very big, it's perfect to share. Don't double order the same thing so that you can try more deliciousness! I am so glad I found this gem in Marina, and will definitely be paying Ho-Wah a second visit soon. The prices were very reasonable as well. read more

Not sure if it was just an off night but we walked in just before 7pm on Friday. The place was very clean. There were two other tables with customers. We waited a few minutes to order drinks. Waitress told us the green beans were delicious so we ordered them along with combo chow fun and combo mooshu. We also ordered sizzling rice soup. We waited about 35 minutes to get our soup, and in the meantime the place was filling up. It took about an hour or so to get our food. Sadly, the mooshu pancakes were moldy and the cabbage was raw. We had to return it, and since no one came to our table to check, my husband had to carry the dishes across the restaurant to the front counter. The rest of the food was okay, pretty average and slightly greasy. No one came back to check on us, and many other customers were getting antsy and we could hear talk about the wait time. One table that was there before us didn't even get one of their dishes until we were almost done with our meal! We ended up paying at the counter and leaving. First impression was very bad! Don't think we'll be giving it another try. Can't get over the moldy food and super long wait. Makes ya wonder what you're eating! read more
