My husband and I are living here temporarily since Spring and once we discovered Ho-Wah we started coming one every week or two! The food is so delicious and our top dishes are the beef chow fun, orange chicken, veg egg rolls, salt and pepper wings (we ask for not spicy), and the special that is a combo of meat and shrimp with green beans. All the ingredients are fresh and well prepared and Dezen the owner or manager is very accommodating and sweet if you get to know her. Her and the rest of the staff always have quick and friendly service and the food quality is consistently excellent and made to order. No msg and fresh ingredients, you can also let them know how spicy you can handle. Dezen is so nice she even let us stay a long time while we were chatting last time, bringing us extra tea to sip on. It feels like home here. My husband has the best time practicing his Chinese here too and she is so encouraging to him and his studies. Just moved to Marina with my wife and we both figured we'd try the sizzling rice soup and the won ton soup here. They were by far the best soups we've had ever. Staff is super friendly and appreciative of their customers. The place itself appears a tad small, but it is definitely nice, cozy, and intimate. We will be going back again soon. read more

We got there took them 10 mins to seat us another 15 mins for water.. we ordered TWO dishes... the green beans came out first we were waiting on the rice but didn't want the food to get cold so we started to eat it. we were almost finished when I asked about the rice. they tried to play it off like they were still making it yet everyone who came in after us was fully eating so we FINALLY get the rice and roommate goes to take a bite and there was a hair.. I didn't realize there was something other than pizza for delivery in Marina. Found the menu and was easily able to place a first time order over the phone. The food was on time, quick, hot and fresh. The kids loved it and it was great to get sweet and sour the way they prepare it. Went once, won't ever go back. Here's what we had: 1) Mu Shu Pork - pretty good. Tasted fresh. Sauce could use more flavor. 2) Hot and Sour Soup. The soup was neither hot nor sour. Tasteless. The broth should have been a wonderful brown, but looked clear like egg drop soup. Luckily, the large bowl was the SMALLEST large bowl of soup I've come across in a restaurant, so it was over pretty quickly. 3) Ma Po Tofu - similar, in lack of taste, to the soup. Not spicy at all. I had a hint of sourness from the tofu, but that's about it. The main veggie used in the dish was obviously canned, sliced mushrooms. The above 3 dishes, with rice and hot tea, ran $27. OK - I may go back. I won't eat there, but I may show some friends or relatives the "decor". Ho Wah has the absolutely filthiest carpet I've seen in my life. It's really impressive. read more

I've been living in Marina for about 7 years now. I never dared to try Ho Wah, because my husband and his friends told me horror stories about this Chinese restaurant. When I saw the "Under new management" sign, I mustered up some courage and gave this restaurant a try. The food was good under the new management, so I referred family, friends, and our clients here whenever they asked for a Chinese restaurant referral. Well, I brought my family of 3 here for dinner last weekend, and had the worst dining experience ever. I don't know what we did to piss off the server/cashier lady, but she was just so freakin' rude! And the service is so slow. First of all, we waited about 15 minutes before our order was taken. I had to flag them down to take our order, otherwise who knows how long it would've taken them to come by. (This is not a huge restaurant either!) Waited another 10 minutes for any water/tea and they never once refilled our water. Then we waited forever for our food! A party of 4 that came in 10 minutes after us got all of their food before we did. What pushed everything over the edge is the server/cashier lady. She literally came by and threw down our plates. Then she brought the crispy rice for our soup, threw it in the soup, immediately turned around and walked away as if she was feeding her pigs! Then we waited forever for the bill to come, and she didn't bring us fortune cookies like she did other tables. So while she was standing next to our table, calculating our final bill, my 4 year old asked her extremely politely, "May I please have some fortune cookies?" The lady didn't respond, so my daughter looked at me confused. I told her maybe the lady didn't hear you, speak louder. So again, my 4 year old asked very politely, but louder this time, "May I have some fortune cookies, please!" The lady still didn't engage my daughter or make eye contact or even bother to look up! Just about when I was about to say something, without looking up or smiling, she said, " I be back with crackers." WTF! So she obviously heard her but didn't bother to even acknowledge her! I get it, you are busy, but politeness is a choice! With that attitude, you won't be busy for long! As a fellow local business owner, let me give you a tip of advice. If my receptionist ever EVER did that to my clients, I would fire her! Customer service still matters! And when an innocent child talks you, make sure you address her back! Because you don't want to piss off the mama bear! The child even said "Please!" and "May I", THAT is a big deal! I vow to NEVER come back to this restaurant and I will not refer anybody to you ever again. Our bill came out to 50 something dollars. For that price, I rather go to P.F. Chang's for FAKE Chinese food, so I can get some decent dining experience and free rice! Also, lunch price is cheap, but dinner prices are too expensive for the small portions and they charge for rice. Very good Chinese for a place being in middle of almost nowhere (they are just north of Monterey). Good authentic Cantonese food. The sizzling rice soup has that home cooking feel to it. It hits the spot in a certain way for me. My wife and I then tried the salt and pepper chicken wings. My wife is a chicken wing snob and she loved it. Just enough salt and pepper and fried to a perfect crisp. We then had the green bean combo and the tofu fish for entrees. Portions were huge and it tasted fresh (didn't have the heavy oil taste you get at other Chinese restaurants). It didn't look like we ordered a lot but we were stuffed and had to grab Togo boxes for the wings, beans, and tofu fish. We will definitely be back soon when we're in town again. read more

This place has great Chinese food. I always come here when I have a craving for Chinese food. Highly recommend the sweet and sour pork but I have never been disappointed with food from here. The chow mein is especially flavorful. I really like getting the happy meal deal from here because the amount of food in it is great and the price for it is fair but I wish there were more options for this meal deal. His mom did the ordering and thankfully the waitress told us we only needed the family sized dinner for 4 people even though there was 6 in our party. Man was she right because we had leftovers. We got the menu 3 which included sizzling rice soup, an appetizer plate with pork, fried shrimp, and wontons. The entrees were snow pea shrimp, sweet and sour chicken, pepper steak, cashew chicken, pork fried rice, and these sweet and sticky chicken wings. We also ordered asparagus beef and mu shu pork and received complimentary walnut shrimp. Needless to say we are glad the waitress told us to only order for 4. I've eaten here a few times over the last year and was never really impressed but I thought I would give it another try because I saw the under new management sign. I'm so glad I did. I had the green bean special, crab puffs and some hot and sour soup. The special was really tasty as was the soup. The crab puffs were a little over cooked but the filling was really yummy. That's really the only reason for 4 stars and not 5. It was good just not perfect. On a separate note the staff was SUPER friendly and I will definitely be back. read more

about three weeks ago me and my wife visited this place cause we really wanted some Chinese food. it was very disappointing... the fried rice was white rice with soy sauce (that's what it looked like), my mom can do better than that and she's Mexican... the "pork" in it were a couple of pieces of diced ham, very un-Chinese.. my wife got a chowmein vegetable dish and it was horrible, utterly! don't pay $2.50 for green tea, all you'll get is a measly tea bag that seemed like it was bought at the dollar store... avoid this place. read more
