On advice from one of the client reps at our credit union, we decided to try this restaurant instead of our usual haunts in Seaside. It was mid afternoon, but we like to eat early so we pulled up to Ho-Wahs to find them closed. Closed?? Checking the hours we found that they would reopen at 4PM and as it was close to that time we decided to wait. Good choice. Fresh ingredients, no preservatives (MSG) and filling portions add up to a great experience. Ho-Wah was pretty ho-wah-ble (sorry had to be said), but in all honesty, it was pretty bad. We ordered the shanghai chow mein and sesame chicken, both were bland, I'm not sure what the sauce on the sesame chicken was, but it was a gelatinous gross version of sesame chicken. This place is pretty good. I've eaten there several times and nothing was bad, but I haven't had anything that blew me away either. A lot of Chinese restaurants taste alike, but this one is just a bit better than most. Broccoli beef which is often blah at other places had lots of garlic and was very flavorful. All the dishes tasted fresh and less processed than some other places. Their family style combos offer a lot of food and good value compared to ordering individual dishes. I can't go to 5 stars because it just doesn't stand out that much to me, but if you are in the area and you want Chinese, Ho Wah may be your best option. read more

The food here was really good. There was definitely lots of options. There was a coupon on Yelp that let me get a free dessert with a review on Yelp. Well, she made sure I gave them a 5 star review, but now that I am home, I can give a nice honest review. We got there 3 minutes before opening and the lady did not get there until 11 mins after us. She parked directly in front rushed to open the door and just looked so frazzled and out of it. When we got in we told her it was our first time and she said "okay, first time. good." She didn't tell us about any of the deals or options, just took our drink orders. When she came back, I told her I wanted egg drop soup and crab puffs as an appetizer and she said "Okay". Well, after she left I saw the 15.50 per person dinner deal for two people that had egg drop soup and crab puffs as the appetizer. I told my friend "well, guess we are getting this." And we decided on that. The food was pretty good and came out pretty fast, which worried me a little especially since the egg drop soup came out maybe 5 mins after we sat down, which meant it came out maybe 7 mins after they opened. But I won't ask questions,because it tasted good. Besides the two egg roll, two crab puff appetizer, the quantities of food were really big. And we took 2 full containers home of noodles, rice, and whatever our entrees were. My pet peeve, and the reason behind the 4 stars and not five is when restaurants that serve shrimp do not clean out the digestive track! The last thing I want to see when I'm about to take a dive into my dinner is a whole bunch of poop still inside of my meal! Hopefully they see this and start cleaning their shrimp better! The dishes were clean. Utensils clean. But the shrimp was not. Big let down. I would recommend this as a quick Chinese food dinners/lunch. This is the BEST Chinese food in Marina or Seaside! My family comes here at least once a week, usually more. There is truly something for everyone. My family members all have special dietary needs and there is always variety for everyone. We have one vegan, two vegetarians, and two Keto but everyone can always find something delicious to eat. This is our second visit here. Both times we really enjoyed our meals. The potstickers (6) were very good sized and the wrapper was delightfully chewy (not tough) and filled with 5-spice seasoned pork. We shared two entrees: Salt & Pepper Fish and Green Bean Chicken with Housemade Garlic Sauce. The chicken was tender and covered in a luscious garlic sauce with lots of blistered green beans. I wiped up every drop of sauce with steamed rice. Although the restaurant is known for its Salt & Pepper wings, we opted for the fish. We were not disappointed. The slices of cod were lightly coated in cornstarch and then deep fried and tossed with sliced jalapeños and green onions. So good! Service was only average, but we enjoyed visiting with owner. Good basic Chinese food. No surprises. We like to come here for the basics without all the fuss for other places. Recommend the sweet and sour pork. Kid friendly but no kids menu or kids utensils(glass of milk is just a big glass with no lid). For families recommend the takeout here. Chinese food that really deserves more attention. Their food is fresh and delicious. I've tried other Chinese places in the area and even in different cities. Ho Wah is my favorite. We always get the Green Bean Combo, and the Salt and Pepper Fish, and we try different things for the third entree. Today we got the Crab Puffs for desert. It's cream cheese wrapped in a deep fried pastry wrap, and it tastes so good. I love taking home some food from Ho Wah. It still tastes great even as leftovers. We love Ho-Wah! It is by far the best Chinese place in the Monterey Bay Area. Everything on the menu is amazing- we have been eating here for about two years (dine-in and delivery), and we love the salt and pepper fish, garlic eggplant with tofu, shanghai noodles, hot and sour soup, egg flour soup, buddha's delight, seafood fried rice, garlic green beans... you cannot go wrong with anything on the menu. They use some of the freshest vegetables I have had at a restaurant, and cook everything in house with so much care (and zero msg). The family is so kind and care about their customers so much- the main woman that runs the restaurant is always there to ask how your meal is and if you need anything else. It's a great value for money; each dish can usually last us for at least two meals per person and our leftovers are just as good as the first meal (and we usually hate leftovers in general). Coming from the SF Bay Area, 57 of us boarded a big bus to visit the Monterey Aquarium today. We went to Ho Wah for lunch. Our bus parked by the side of the restaurant. It was so convenient! The restaurant is clean and neat. The simple decorations create an appealing ambiance. Their restrooms are kept exceptionally clean. Our servers were incredibly kind and accommodating. Two weeks prior to our visit, we talked to Chef Steve who designed the following menu for us: * Egg-Flower Soup * Mixed Seafood (Fish & Shrimp) with Greens * Chinese Eggplant in Garlic Sauce * Stir Fry Chicken with Broccoli, Squash and Tofu, * BBQ Pork Fried Rice * Dessert: Sesame Balls (with red bean paste) Cost: $20 per person, including tax & tips The food was delicious. Probably the worst customer service I have had to deal with in Marina. Would highly recommend others to go to Noodle Bar or even somewhere like Panda Express because it will be better than here. This place is a joke! I was really excited to get my food after ordering pick-up. When I got there the young man at the counter was already pretty rude.. Once I informed him that I specifically did not want chicken wings and just salt and pepper chicken, he turned to the lady working behind the counter and said "this guy ordered the wrong thing and doesn't want it now" when I did not order wings at all. Told her that I would not eat then and instead of apologizing both workers behind the desk basically told me I was stupid and ordered the wrong thing and it was my fault for not asking enough questions. Then instead of taking it back, she offered me a sesame ball.. I just did not want the wings, not a sesame ball with the order...
