Small portions for the price and lack of customer service. Ran out of water mutliple times and the waitress only came back once (I left dehydrated and had to buy a drink elsewhere). We waited more than 5 minutes to get our bill and became so fed up after the waitress passed us up more than 10 times that we walks straight up to the front to pay. This is our new favorite restaurant in Marina. We took the advice of a friend and stopped for take out. The Pressed Almond Duck was really great and we never find pressed duck anywhere! We tried many dishes: plain fried rice (so flavorful we wondered, if this was plain...), Barbecued Pork Chow Mein, Paper Wrapped Chicken, Mu Shu Pork, Kung Po Chicken-everything was wonderful. The change in ownership was a step in the right direction...the restaurant became cleaner and there is now heat in the building when it's cold or air conditioning when the weather has been hot. The food is tasty and appealing to the eye.The portions are satisfying and served in modern style dishes for that extra flair. We have used their catering services for a school function and the attendees were happy with the choices served. Their seafood and asparagus dishes that had become a favorite of mine and my family that we sometimes share as a side dish. They have a dessert type sesame seeded ball that is filled with a chocolate that has been deep fried and is delicious. Service is friendly and fast and they go that extra distance to make sure you are enjoying your meal. I had been there when it was under the previous owners and because it was so filthy I never went back. However, my family and I "LOVE" going to Ho Wah, their food is fresh and very delicious. Ordered two nights ago delivery. I ordered egg rolls, fried shrimp, white rice and moo shu pork. I don't usually eat chinese food, I like thai, but because it said in the ad NO MSG so I tried it. Lots of food, no greasy egg rolls or shrimp (and lots of fried shrimp). The moo shu was great, everything was great. This will be the only chinese restaurant I will go to or order from. Good not great food. Customer service is bad. Their delivery service consistently misses orders or special requests. They offer a discount for local college students but none for military or veterans. Being in a large military and veteran community I would think we would get a discount too. Too much hassle with their service. I asked to speak to a manager and "they weren't working". Such a shame a possible great establishment can do this. This restaurant was recommended by the hotel I was staying at. They said the food was very good. But since I was stuck at the hotel without a car, I needed it to be delivered. Problem is, they require a minimum of $25. I am by myself and how many people can eat $25 worth of food. I travel all over the country and this is the first restaurant that required that much for a minimum purchase. I ordered $21 and they still would not deliver it. The food was so fresh and no MSG for sure. I know because I'm allergic to it. Definitely worth the trip to Marina. We started with the Crab Puffs. They came out piping hot and crispy with delicious Sweet & Sour Sauce. Cooked perfectly and you could tell they were fried in clean fresh oil. They have a coupon for 6 Free Crab Puffs for Tuesday's only with a minimum purchase of 25.00 excluding tax. If you go in the owner will give you one. (6.50 savings), other coupons too! They are worth the full price though for sure. For my main meal I had the Green Beans with Homemade Garlic Sauce and Chicken. Honestly, the best I've ever had. It was one of the specials. Had a lot of chicken and the perfect amount of sauce. The chicken was nicely cut in bite size pieces and plenty of it. It looked like a picture on the plate when our waitress delivered it. We also had the Salt & Pepper Chicken Wings and Salt & Pepper Tofu. Both were excellent. My friend had the Hong Kong Chef's Wor Wonton Soup and loved it. It was served in a huge bowl with chicken breast, shrimp, BBQ pork, pork wontons and Bok Choy in homemade chicken broth. She's Chinese and kept commenting on how fresh it was and she would be coming back. For dessert we had Fried Mochi Sesame Red Bean Puffs. I had never heard of them but they were very light for being fried and tasty. Just the right amount of sweetness. My Chinese friend said that they were delicious and again commented on how clean their oil must be. We were full by then so I took the rest of the Chicken Wings and Tofu home. Even after a few hours in the fridge, the wings were still crispy and not greasy at all. I'll try to figure out how to post all the coupons they have, oh and there is no expiration date on them. The good thing is you can go in, get them from the owner and use them right away. It's the first Chinese restaurant I've ever visited that has a section on the menu called Healthy Entrees. I have loved getting delivery here. The food was good, especially since they're the only ones who deliver excluding the pizza places, however they screwed up now. You can tell that some of their staff haven't been properly trained in customer service and how to easily take someone's order. The girl who was taking my order didn't even know some of the items on the menu. They usually take 45 minutes to deliver the food, well actually they always get at our house in an hour. Yet I live in marina; does it take that long for some Chinese food to be made and then delivered within the same city? And this time, instead of the usual hour to be delivered, it takes an hour and a half to get our food. I called twice to see where our dinner was and all I got was "Oh I'm so sorry, it'll be her in 10-15 minutes." I wait and there's still no food, so I called the second time and I received the same thing. I let them know that this was what they said last time, and I got the same thing. It's final arrives 90 minutes later, and they even forgot the extra sweet and sour sauce that we ordered. Shocked and knowing that this was unacceptable, especially for regular customers, I tried to get 10-15% off my order due to the unacceptable "customer service" and extremely long waiting time. Amazingly they said no. This was not worth the "wait." Unless you want good Chinese food to be delivered two hours later, with missing items, and still be charged for their "customer service," Don't Get It, It's Not Worth the Money or Time! read more

This restaurant is a hidden gem in Marina, and it's surprising how few people are aware of it. The first thing you notice pulling up are the beautiful red Chinese lanterns decorating the front of the building, especially at night time when they're glowing, and the decor inside is just as welcoming and bright. I won't talk too much about the atmosphere and the decorations, it's enough to say that as soon as you walk in, you can tell that the owners take pride in their restaurant. Onto the food and service! I've been to Ho-Wah several times both by myself and with friends and family, and I have yet to order something I haven't enjoyed. The chicken chow mein is delicious and generously portioned, the orange chicken tastes fresh and is high quality (don't expect Panda Express, this is not as sugary or fatty, and Ho-Wah never uses MSG) and the egg rolls are crispy and full of fresh veggies. If I had to pick a favorite dish, though, it would definitely be the Mandarin Shrimp. It is hands down the best meal I've had in Marina. The service here is speedy and cordial, you can tell it's a family operated business and they appreciate every customer they get, which is why it's mystifying that they often have a quiet dining room. Bring your friends and family, enjoy their amazingly cheap lunch specials, or have a family style dinner and bring home enough leftovers for the rest of the week! :) read more

I read a favorable review of this restaurant in the Monterey County Weekly newspaper and further checked it on Yelp before venturing in with my wife on one of our frequent trips to the Monterey Peninsula. I am writing this after having just enjoyed it for dinner and while the experience is fresh in my mind. We chose the five-course dinner for two for $15.50 per person and felt it offered good value. The portions were large at each course as they were on the tables around us. Our two entrees were shrimp and broccoli in a garlic sauce and the egg foo yung. There was no over-cooking or dryness in anything we were serves. All veggies, including those inside the EFY and the egg rolls were cooked al dente. We liked their warm crab puffs, finding to our surprise they were akin to a lotus blossom shaped blintz filled with a whipped cream cheese flavored with crab. A bird's nest soup, egg fried rice and fresh vegetable chow mein were our other three courses. For a cocktail type beverage we chose a delightful hot green tea flavored with pieces of lemon and ginger in the pot. It was more enjoyable than a beer, but savor it as it is served like a beer, without free refills. Our table was adorned with a fresh, fragrant rose, planting the idea when you sit down that what you'll be served will be fresh and enjoyable without the scent of a typical Chinese restaurant kitchen. read more
