You definitely get pampered here! I came to get my hair dyed and was immediately impressed as I opened the door. Very stylish, modern design and full of products for customers to purchase. Very welcoming staff and environment. I was even offered tea or water upon my entrance! Went to the back and was also impressed by the design of the decor and the clean and comforting earthly tones. The staff was very wonderful and even offered me a hand massage while I got my hair dye washed out. I would definitely recommend this place! Overpriced. I go to a great salon in NYC normally and I was in a rush to find a place for a blowout. I knew I would be in the area so I just booked an appointment. The receptionist was really annoying. Not professional. She just kind of floundered about and passive aggressively asked me to not sit down in a chair. I totally am fine with that due to covid, I just can't stand people who are too meek to be direct. Just tell me directly I don't care. Laughing awkwardly and phrasing everything as a whiny question just irritated me. As far as my appointment went, I have very fine hair that's been damaged from my time in the sun. So, post wash it's always a giant tangle. Again, I have fine hair which is especially prone to breakage. The hair stylist just held my hair at the root so I couldn't feel pain and yanked the brush through my hair. I'm sure she undid like years of me trying to take care of and grow out my fragile, long hair. The curls didn't even really hold like a couple of hours and I paid like $90 for this. Drybar is much cheaper. Would have gone there if I had time to run to Kaka'ako or Waikiki but I didn't. Would not recommend! Very mediocre for the prices. The BEST Salon and Spa on Island I went for a 9:30 am appointment this past Monday and was in for an unexpected treat. My stylist was ANJALEE and her assistant was CORY. This team was more than a man could ask for. I didn't know what I wanted in a hair style though I knew I wanted something that would look good for my upcoming trip to Tokyo this fall. ANJALEE and I decided to do something where I could paste the top in a bed-head style with short sides. Sounded great to me. I was met by CORY who was her assistant. She began with a selection of 3 oils which I could choose from for a head and shoulder massage. I chose the "Relaxing" oil. Let me say this with authority from many past experiences with salons and spas... CORY was the best. She warmed the oil and had me take 3 deep breaths. Next she massaged the oils into my scalp and that was heaven though I had a really tight neck and left shoulder from being online all the time. She worked them into butter. This wasn't a 2 minute massage of careless disregard. She put that "extra touch" into it and then that was just the beginning. CORY took me to the washing area where she continued to massage my head with shampoo and felt as if she was working on it for hours. During this time I received a hand and forearm massage. After the stress melted away, I had a hair coloring applied and a hot towel applied to my face. I rested in that position for a relaxing 10-15 minutes and then the hair coloring was rinsed by CORY with yet another massage. By now I'm ready to sleep. By the time ANJALEE returned I was ready for my style. She took over 40 minutes in making it perfection. Snip here, comb there, trim here, snip again. It was magic. Was this the end? No. I was returned to the washing area where I received the most relaxing wash and rinse again with the magic fingers of CORY. I returned to ANJALEE where she dried and touched-up my hair again, then applied a paste to the top and when she was done I HONESTLY looked and felt 5 years younger. The gray was gone, the sloppy hair I came in with was replaced with a current, modern style. The entire process took just over 1.5 hours. The care and attention to detail, the massages, coloring, washing, and yes, the style were stupendous. I left a new man. With a $40 fee, I left a very generous tip of honest gratitude for both CORY and ANJALEE. I was told to return in a few weeks for a complimentary "touch-up" before my next appointment. I will return for a final style and coloring before my trip though I wish my hair would grow faster... I want to return again today!! They did not told me how much is was to have a message. I try to ask but they did not even answer me. It seem that they don't want me to come back after this. On my day of my appointment which is today. I was call by one of there employee and told that my appointment was at 1:15. The person did not even greet where there calling from and did not even introduce themselves. I knew it was them calling because that the only appointment I have. I told her that my appointment was at 2:00 check in at 1:45. That person keep tell me that my appointment was at 1:00. She sound upset that I was not there yet. I ask kindly if there any other opening. She told me that she could take me in at :145 but must check in at 1:30. I feel that their appointment schedule is so screw up and the way the receptionist call is so rude. I rush catching the bus and when I came to the place. I told the receptionist that I came for my appointment and she told me just have a sit. The receptionist did not even have a smile on her face. It make me feel really uncomfortable. My experience with the receptionist at this place make me very disappointed and don't think I will come back even if my message person was good. So I found out yesterday that my hair stylist at Salon Blanc is no longer there and no one knows of where she went! A co-worker suggested I see Masami at Aveda as she worked with him before in the past and said that he is the best for hair. It was very easy to get an appointment with him the next day and I was quoted the $80 first time hair cut rate with Masami and then $100 every session afterwards. I was a little taken back by the rate as I typically get charged around $65 , but I thought why not, try something new. This was by far the best hair salon experience I have ever had. You are paying for the overall experience of the spa in addition to the hair cut. When you are greeted you are offered tea/ water/ coffee and after Masami saw my hair and we discussed of what I wanted to do his assistant (I think her name was Miyuki?) did an amazing scalp, shoulder and upper back massage in the chair. You are offered Rose, Jasmine, or Citus oil/aromatherapy to do the scalp massage. She then took me to do a wash and did an amazing neck and head massage and while my hair was deep conditioning she did a hand and arm massage on me. Masami saw me afterwards and he is very good at what he does. He told me that he worked for Aveda in Hawaii since it opened back in 2000. Masami is a precision cutter and really has a good eye as to what looks good with your features. I really liked it that he took his time and spent about two hours working on my hair. He made it so that I still had the length that I wanted however, thinned it out (I have very thick hair) and added alot of texture with the cut and style that he gave me. I am consulting with him next week for Japanese relaxers and will let you all know of how that goes. Definitely check Aveda and Masami out if you are looking for a new hair stylist. Prior to COVID, customers could enjoy the lounge area, relax with a cup of water or hot tea, and utilize the bathroom amenities and shower facilities. Now, those luxuries are gone. Even though COVID has thrown a major wrench in our daily lives and forced businesses to change their policies and procedures, Ho'ala has done the very best to still provide outstanding service. I had a relaxing 90-minute massage with Stephanie and enjoyed every minute. Those added luxuries may have disappeared, but I'll still continue to support local. read more

Spas are one of my favorite indulgences. Ho'ala Salon and Spa used to be Aveda (located at Ala Moana on the upper level Neiman Marcus wing by Swarovski). Although their name has changed, their service remains consistent. Prices are on the upper end of the spectrum, so I recommend this salon if you are willing to spend a little more for a nice pampering. My girlfriends and I enjoy spa days together and I have been to at least a dozen different places on my own. I come here mostly for the massages and brazilian waxes. Appointments usually book up at least a day or two in advance. Every so often (it seems quarterly), they discount services by around 25%. I usually choose the Elemental Nature Massage (a blend of Swedish, Deep Tissue, Sport, and Trigger Point Therapy). Prices range from $65-$195 for 25-90min, so I always go when it's on sale. Once there, an attendant greets and seats you in the waiting area where refreshing mint water is served. Shortly after, the attendant escorts you to the changing rooms to use the bathroom and derobe. Before your massage, you get a relaxing foot/calf massage with scrubs, warm water, and finishing lotion. Once inside the massage room, they ask your preference of three different aromatherapies. Soft music, complimentary tea/water, steam room, showers, and relaxation quarters also add to the ambience. There is no rush, and you can stay as long as you wish. On a sidenote, I choose NAMI. She's a petite Japanese woman who does a great job on massages, waxing, etc. She knows just the right pressure, when to speak, and when to be silent to allow your mind to drift. In the end, you feel decompressed and relaxed. The payment in the end is a slight wake-up call, but you leave feeling like it was totally worth it. read more

Granted any salon visit is risky during a pandemic, but as an FYI to inform customers' risk decision making, this is a COVID-19 hotspot on Hawaii as of this week. I was notified yesterday of a staff member who tested positive on 1 August 2020, the day after we had 2+ hrs of close contact during my appointment. It would be surprising if the staff member had no symptoms while at work the previous day, so whatever processes the salon has in place may not be adequate to promote symptom/risk disclosure. While I have no doubt that the laws will be followed with regard to sanitizing the space afterward, the hospital I called to schedule testing said they had many test requests linked to this salon, so (as always) assume the staff are infected and take appropriate precautions. ETA: The haircut turned out really beautifully, but not worth having to undergo testing and find childcare for my baby for two weeks while I am quarantined apart from my family. read more

Only in the past 6 years have I learned to treat myself. When you are a mom, you need a couple of hours of pampering sometimes. I finally found a pedicure place I love and a hair stylist that I trust. Now I found a facial place that I am crazy about. This past Tuesday, I went to get a facial. The elemental nature facial. I checked in and immediately, I was called in to change into the robe. When I got into waiting area, I was surprised to get a foot bath and massage. It was relaxing, especially since I recently completed the 2011 American Heart Association Heart Walk. Then my facial attendant called me in to the room. Very calming music and aroma. The facial attendant was brilliant. She was the one to get me started using sun screen from my last visit here to Hoala Aveda spa. My skin felt refresh and relaxed. It was a heavenly experience. I got a facial from Tiffany about two weeks ago. Tiffany seemed sweet, but I am not a fan of this spa's facial techniques. Ho'ala utilizes some device that shoots steam on your face, presumably to open the pores. Yeah, not a fan, the steam spraying on my face made it hard to breathe. Plus, it made those bubbling noises, much like your garment steamer at home would. Not pleasant. The technique used to massage products onto my face didn't account for the fact that I needed to breathe! There was a lot of massaging over my entire face, including right over my nostrils, which also made it hard to breathe. Finally, to top this entire EXPENSIVE experience off, I get a HUGE cystic pimple right at the tip of my nose. Not a pimple that one should expect after getting a facial, you know, one that goes away quickly. No, this cystic, painful pimple has been with me since the day after the facial. And none of the acne products I have is taking this sucker down - not salicylic acid, not Mario Basdescu's drying lotion, nothing! Needless to say, I am NOT PLEASED with my experience with this spa and am not going back! This entire experience has made me rethink facials altogether. read more

You know the cool thing to do now a days is to let the public know when you have a staff member or multiple test positive for COVID. Here's the not cool thing to do after someone on your staff tests positive: -Keep operating at normal business hours. -Fail to self-report and let the public know staff has tested positive in your salon. -Fail to provide detailed steps you are taking to keep your staff and the public safe before and after someone tests positive for COVID on your Instagram, Facebook, and website. -Put profit over the safety and well-being of staff and the public by pretending its "business as usual" during a pandemic. I get that it's incredible difficult to run a salon, keep it open, and provide good customer service during a pandemic. I understand your team is probably stressed. What people will remember when this pandemic passes if you keep operating with this level of negligence is that you put your staff and the public at risk. Having your salon known as a "superspreader" or "COVID hot spot" is not how you want to go down. Do better. People's lives are at stake. read more

I know, why is a guy writing a review about this place??? Well, I am secure and besides, I love their products! I first came across the Aveda brand when i was staying at a W Hotel in California. The smell was amazing and even for a guy. Well, the W Hotel does not use Aveda any more, they switched to Bliss which is just as good. One of the reviewers said that he paid $85 for a haircut, that is weird, their price list says $40. Also, if you want quality service, it is best you set up an appointment. I don't come here too often, because I hate malls but when I do run low on shampoo and gel, I usually get a cut as well. I started looking for a new salon probably a year ago. Whereas I was happy with my stylist, she had moved to a location that was loud and crowded and constantly felt frantic. Not what I'm looking for when I'm going to get my hair cut. I tried a few other places that all gave me that same feeling. That's when I decided to give Ho'ala a try. I had read that it was more expensive (my haircut runs about $78+tip), but I figured if I could go in and not feel like I was being rushed or crammed in with a dozen other people it would be worth it. On arriving, you're directed to a waiting area where fruit infused water awaits you. Your stylist will come get you to begin your hair cut experience. You start, as expected, with a shampoo where everyone makes sure you're comfortable - recliner that supports your legs, a little hand massage while your hair is being washed - yeah, that's the stuff. Then, off to your stylist. I've worked with two and have found both to be very nice and very competent. As I look around the salon at other clients leaving, their hair all looks good, so I can't imagine that you'd have a poor stylist experience regardless of whom your appointment was made with. Obviously, this is my new found salon. My daughter and I will be here regularly. read more

I've been going to Ho'ala Salon for years but haven't been back since the pandemic has started. I'm never particular with who I request, and this time I thought I'd treat myself to a more experienced stylist. I made an appointment with Blanca, and let's just say... maybe she should retire. She has zero customer service skills. First of all, she was 10 minutes late. I let that slide. I showed her a picture of what I wanted. She takes me to the bowl and gives me an underwhelming scalp massage. Aveda has always gone above and beyond with this, so that was disappointing. She barely puts my hair in a towel turban and by the time I got to the chair it was on the floor. Nice. I could tell she was experienced because the haircut was extremely quick and it looked fine. When she started to style my hair, she gave me a great blow out. Here's where I take issue: without telling me it would be an extra THIRTY dollars to "flat iron" my hair, she says, "I'll need to straighten the back a little for some stubborn pieces." I say okay, unknowingly adding an extra $30 to my already expensive $110 dollar haircut. Honestly my hair looked worse after she did the flat iron touch ups, because the bouncy blow out looked good. When I was checking out with the girl in the front, she tells her what services to total up. The last thing she tells me is that she would get me her business card. I was shocked when the total was nearly $200. With the "hot tools", "service fee" (something they implemented during Covid -eye roll- a salon SHOULD be taking extra measures for cleanliness, it's the literal law), and my tip, I just spent $200 on an okay haircut. I've had better at places like Dada Salon or Bravo salon for a lot less. You come to Aveda for the amenities, all of which they stopped doing like the hand massage. After going home and looking at my receipt I called the salon to question the hot tools and service fee. I had the store manager, Bailey, call me back. She left a voice mail saying that Blanca claims she let me know that a flat iron would be an extra charge, which just goes to show she lied about it. They were pretty defensive and it was such a turn off after many great experiences here. Never again. read more

Their massages are NOT worth the money spent. Go elsewhere and get much more value per dollar. This coming from someone who gets a massage once a month. I got a $200 gift card for my birthday, so I came here for the first time. The massage was decent, but unfortunately the person giving the massage just didn't have enough power. I honestly felt bad because they were doing their best, but for a $200 massage, I had expected a massage that could help relieve some muscle ache. Unfortunately, it was at best a decent a massage, which I guess if it cost $60, I would be saying it is definitely worth its value. But multiply that cost 3x and it doesn't make sense to spend that much money here. I don't want to name her name because she was a nice person and did her best. She did say halfway through the massage that I should have gotten a male to do the massage, but quickly followed up saying, oh but we don't have any male staff. Doh. If you want to splurge, I wouldn't pick this place. There are other massage places that you can get for 1/3 the price for literally the same value. Talking to the manager didn't help -- she even passive aggressively blamed me saying that maybe it's the client who is the one having the issue. Really?? So, it's my fault, and this is your best response to a customer who just paid $240 (including tip)?? If this was a $60 massage, I would have been like MEH life goes on... but $240 and that is your response? It could have been a simple apology, but nah let's just flip it on to the customer. Honestly, I probably wouldn't even be writing this if it wasn't for her attitude. Front staff was kind, shower room was nice, the masseuse was kind, the massage was average, and the manager had terrible customer service skills. Save your money and go elsewhere if you want a massage. I don't know about the other services, so maybe that's where they truly shine? But if you're there specifically for a massage, go elsewhere and get much more value per dollar. read more

AHHH. This was my first spa experience and it absolutely will not be my last! Thank you Ho'ala Spa for making our Mother's Day treat so amazing! I don't even know where to begin.... Everyone that works here is really sweet and friendly (the girl who did my nails was a little less friendly but nothing snobby). They really understand that you came to relax and do everything they can to make you feel it! We got the Mother Nuture package which was $162 before taxes and tip. It comes with a massage, treatment, pedicure and make up touch up (honestly they can leave out the make up touch up part cuz all they do is brush your face with powder and apply lipgloss). I'm pregnant and I was worried they wouldn't let me substitute for a different massage but they accommodated me with no problem! The facility is clean, relaxing and refreshing. When they offer you tea, grab it. Every. Single. Time. Grab it! The tea is so delicious it's like crack! My hair is a little tricky to cut as it is thick but not too thick, very wavy but not curly, textured but not coarse. Hairdressers typically approach my hair with fear or with overconfidence - either way, I very rarely leave the salon feeling satisfied. I went to Diana over a year ago and left thinking, "Wow that is exactly what I asked for and more." Fast forward to present day and several very disappointing haircuts, I decided to give this Ho'ala location another try, but only because the Kapolei location couldn't take me. I didn't even ask for Diana because I couldn't remember her name but when I showed up, I was pleasantly surprised to see her! I'm one of those people who seizes time spent in the salon chair as an opportunity to meditate and just allow my mind to rest, so it works out that Diana is quiet. She listened and even seemed to intuitively know what I wanted but couldn't communicate. Needless to say, I walked out feeling giddy. The next day I washed my hair and it looked even BETTER. My first time at Ho'ala Salon & Spa and I LOVED it! Been wanting to try this place out for awhile and finally decided to go ahead and book an appointment! Called the day before to get an appointment for the following day and they fit me right in for an afternoon haircut. Atmosphere was lovely and so relaxing! They began my session promptly and started it out with a massage! She did my neck, shoulders and head and it was def much needed. I felt so spoiled and pampered especially after such a hectic crazy day so thank you ladies for taking such good care of me! But wait it didn't stop there-we proceeded to wash and condition my hair and guess what?? I got another massage on my scalp as well as my arms and hands. They didn't rush it and took a good amount of time massaging and washing my hair! Seriously I would just go back for that! On to the haircut! My stylist was Janelle and she was awesome! Conversations were smooth and she was attentive to me the whole time. She gave me exactly what I wanted and honestly I've always left a salon feeling I didn't get what I asked for or they couldn't do what I requested BUT not this time! Decided to stop in on a whim, since I was spending the morning at the mall--despite some other reviews that I read. First, ladies at the front were sweet and polite and helped me immediately. Second, I had Blanca for stylist. I just got a trim (no color), and she listened to exactly what I wanted! PLUS! She did these fabulous neck and arm/hand massages between hair washings that really helped you relax. I was so pleasantly surprised. It was worth every penny. If I was here on the island longer, I would go back in a heart beat. read more

This is my favorite and only place for spa. I've been here several times. The therapists are all excellent. It must be because they're calm and stress free from the real world. They always offer water or hot tea before and after your spa. I also like the fact that they use natural ingredients but I'm not sure if their product is 100% natural. It's good to come on a weekday versus weekend of course. The only bad part is when you have to leave and return to the real world of chaos. read more

On a random Thursday, September 21, I decided I was tired of my long dry hair. Hey I was off and I was talking to Aimee from Aimee French waxing (she's awesome i have to write a review on her too!) about just feeling blah. She suggested to get my hair done and I say you know what I should! I should just go to some random salon and get it cut. Then Aimee looked at me and suggested maybe you should go to that Aveda salon in Ala Moana, Ho'ala. And I said that sound like a plan, I'm in the area already why not. I got to the salon and ask if I could get a consultation. I didn't know what I wanted to do but I knew I wanted to get my hair done. The front desk was nice and very accommodating. I was able to be seen that day. I also mention to the girl in the front desk I wanted to speak to someone who is use to dealing with my type of hair (long and wavy you know had a life of it's own kind of hair), they said no problem. Came back for my consultation, waited a bit in the waiting area where they offered water and tea then met Janelle. Janelle brought me back and I sat down facing a full length mirror and we just talked. She asked what I wanted and at first I didn't know and I ask what do you suggest. Rewinding back I am Filipino and my hair was long practically ending where my butt starts. You think Filipino maybe straight hair comes to mind but I have very thick frizzy hair. Last time I went to a salon was maybe in a year. Janelle suggested to cut my hair but keeping it wait length and some layers in the front. I personally was told this a million times from a million different hairstyles so I interject and was like I want to go shorter. She said the shortest she will go is shoulder length because if she goes shorter my hair would just puff up, which I totally agree (high school experience was a looking like a lion in one point of my life lol) then she suggested highlights and I was sold. It wasn't something drastic but it was different. So I told Janelle okay when can we do it? Can we do it today. Janelle checked her schedule and said yes we can. So on a random day I got 10 inches cut off with highlights. The cut and the highlight I think cost me around $100 something but I was feeling good. No more dry ends and a different look, score! I'm actually going back to retouch my hair. Janelle is sweet and glad I decided to go to a salon that is always training their staff on the last thing. Ho'ala Salon and Spa - Day Spas Near Me - Honolulu, Hawaii

I haven't been to this salon for over 5 years, but wanted to try something different from my usual Aveda salon in Kahala. Luna was very sweet, listened to how I specifically wanted my hair cut (A line) and gave me a calming head massage (another staff gave me a short, but nice hand massage). I enjoy the spa-like experience here. Even though high end hair cuts are a little more pricey, it's worth it if you get the results you want. Will definitely come back! read more

Had my first facial done and I gotta say it was just as good as having a full body massage. I do believe that it really depends on ur masseuse, in this case the aethestician. They can make ur visit a good or bad experience. I had Terri and she was excellent. She listened to my concerns before starting , making sure I didn't have any known skin allergies, etc. She explained every procedure she was doing and made sure I was comfortable. I told her that I had a sinus headache earlier and she made sure to press those pressure points on my head which felt great. Terri was excellent and I would highly recommend her to anyone.
