The Hobbit Cafe serves up wonderfully delicious food. When you dine at The Hobbit Cafe, you get what you pay for; flavorful and unique dishes that keep you wanting to come back for more. Our experience at The Hobbit Cafe was made even better thanks to our knowledgeable waitress, Daniela M. She was able to answer all of our questions, without hesitation, about the menu and the movies. Our food was delivered hot and with minimal wait time. We ordered The Fellowship Plate as our appetizer. Everything was fresh and flavorful. My husband, son, and I ordered burgers. My husband substituted buffalo while my son substituted lamb for their burgers. I decided to stick with traditional beef. All of the flavorful meats were cooked to perfection. The sides offered were also wonderful. My husband ordered onion rings while my son and I ordered the Uruk fries which had queso and chorizo. Superb! My daughter ordered the chicken fajitas. The chicken was marinated to perfection, served sizzling hot and with plenty of vegetables. The fried pickles were also tasty and served with two different dipping sauces which complimented them well. Needless to say, we had leftovers and took our yummy desserts home for later. Not sure what happened to this place. I hadn't been in years and was excited to take a group of new coworkers there for dinner just to be disappointed with the food. We live in Spring/Conroe area so it's a drive. The menu changed and the quality of the food wasn't as great as it used to be. I had hyped this place up so much just for it to be a downer. It wasn't too busy and we did benefit from the happy hour. I was sad that they didn't have my favorite burger anymore and even more distraught with the sweet potato fries. Our waitress was kind of off, not knowing the beer they have on tap then bringing the wrong beer and disappearing long enough for the rest of us to be half way finished with our meals to make the adjustment. Another weird thing was the staff was putting lights on the trees and one of them backed her ass to my back lol. Perhaps do that when the tables around are empty or before/after hours? read more

I've been several times, and I'm not sure why I decided to eat here this past weekend, but I did. I ordered the lamb burger. The waitress seemed disinterested in her job, going through the motions, but not providing much else as far as courteousness. The order was placed, and it took about 20 minutes for the food to arrive. The burger itself was alright. The meat patty was dwarfed by the larger bun and the amount of greens. The patty tasted fine, but really didn't provide much flavor. Lamb typically needs something alongside it to boost it's flavor, so I wouldn't be too critical of that. Mostly, I was disappointed with the service, which has almost always been this place's heel. The sweet potato fries were tasty, and a decent portion. Other than that, the diversity in the menu is the biggest selling point. Service and actual flavor is meh. read more

The Hobbit Cafe does not disappoint! We went here for a last minute girls brunch, and sat outside on the patio on a nice Sunday. They are doing a great job with social distancing and all staff were wearing masks. We only waited for about 15 minutes for a table for 2. I love the avocado omelette served here, it's just superb, I am also a fan of their bloody Mary's which hit the spot. My friend enjoyed the chocolate pancakes and we both loved the breakfast potatoes served here, they just tasted fresh and the sautéed onion in them make them a hit. The Hobbit Cafe has been operating since 1972 and started out specializing in vegetarian dishes! They have since added in non-vegetarian dishes but still have an extensive vegetarian selection! This restaurant has a lot of personality! If you enjoy "The Lord of the Rings" movies you will enjoy looking at the displays inside the restaurant. There is indoor seating as well as outdoor patio seating that is pretty shaded by trees. Parking can be tough as this is a popular destination for brunch! Speaking of brunch- it is served on the weekends until 2PM. I have not ordered drinks here but I did see beer and wine options. Last time I visited the Hobbit Cafe was for lunch and I ordered the black bean burger with a side of brown rice. The dish price was $8.79. I also had some iced tea since it was a pretty hot day! The portion sizes here are very generous- I always take home a doggie bag. I like this restaurant because of all the vegetarian dishes and the hippie vibes! If you are in a hurry I would not recommend the Hobbit Cafe. You need to be prepared to wait and have time to just sit back and relax. read more

Before entering the building, I was SO excited for something as eccentric as rainforest cafe but a LOTR version about hobbits obviously and the decor was a slight let down, but it doesn't change the fact that their food is awesome! When waitress was taking our order, we asked if it would be possible to make a small modification (adding bacon to the jalapeno poppers); she said no because it would confuse the cooks. This place is not what I expected. It's location is hidden behind two other restaurants. All three share the same parking lot, so it can be difficult to find parking. One of the restaurant's offers free valet parking but you can easily get confused thinking it's for The Hobbit, when it's not. After we parked, my wife and I were expecting fans of the books or movies to be enjoying themselves merrily. Instead, we were greeted to a questionable clientele. Most of them seemed out of it, while others were clearly drunk. This is more like a bar than it is a cafe. The inside of the location smelled funky and all decorations related to the LOTRs trilogy were old, dusty, and poorly taken care of. It didn't look so much like a museum of collectibles as it did an abandoned house with LOTRs paraphernalia left behind. I ordered quesadillas, was giving food with a hair, it was in the greens I knew it wasn't melted cheese... I told the waiter, hesitant because I hate to complain... she tells me to point it out I do with my phone light, she proceeds to push the hair into the food with a fork and says she can't have them remake it or take it off the tab because she didn't see it. She then takes it back to the kitchen wipes the greens off and brings it back and asks if I want a box. I wish I got a picture but I was just expecting a simple remake. That being said, the food was pretty subpar. Got the fish tacos because it was on their recommended menu, but it didn't really stand out in terms of taste. I've been here a couple times and it's always a reliable, no-wait-time spot with a large menu selection. I usually end up here when it's after 11 a.m. on a Saturday or Sunday and I don't feel like sitting around at the latest trendy brunch hotspot for the guaranteed 1-2 hour wait. Jamaican jerk burger: yummy! Messy. Packed with delicious goodness and toppings. You might be wearing some of those toppings afterward but just pretend you're saving it for later. Pancakes: First off, I'm obsessed with pancakes so I am serious about finding high quality pancakes. I got a 3-stack and chose a variety. I got the peanut butter choc chip, ginger bread, and coconut (with choc chips added to have a "almond joy" flavor at the recommendation of the waitress). So the pancakes themselves are decent - I think they were overmixed as they were a bit chewy. The flavor is very good. I would not recommend adding choc chips unless you have an extreme sweet tooth - they add a TON of choc chips to the point where it's overwhelming. Next time I will get the choc chips on the side and just add them in myself. The coconut flavor has its very own coconut syrup on the side that is very good. The maple syrup they offer is also very good. Service is decent, very friendly but can be a little slow. Might need drink refill reminders. The restaurant setup is good in some ways and not so good in others. For example, the patio is very nice and shady and a great place to sit on a nice day, but some of the tables are practically on top of each other where you're literally bumping elbows with the folks next to you. Inside there's more space but it's very much got that "old wood house" feel, complete with the matching smell and echoing wooden rooms. The decorations scattered around are top notch though. The service wasn't bad but it wasn't anything amazing either, just serviceable enough. The food was a disappointment. I got the beef fajitas and eggs, which comes with tortillas. To my horror, I realized these aren't homemade tortillas, but rather the kind you buy at the grocery store. They didn't even cook them on the stove, it's almost like they threw them into a microwave- you can tell through the taste and look of them. The eggs were on par with the eggs my mom makes me, and that's not necessarily a compliment (sorry mom). The beef was the highlight. Unless you're a major Tolkien nerd it's a hard pass. read more

We ordered the shrimp rolls as an appetizers, OH MY GOSH they were perfect, warm, texture wasn't strange, sweet and sour sauce to dip it in. We were beyond hungry so they tasted even better! We ordered the avocado burger not only because everyone and their mom yelped about it, our waitress recommend it. As promised it came with a massive amount of avocado - it's like they have a never ending supply of avocados in the kitchen. So I was very disappointed in this place. I went with some friends and we were very excited, but ended up underwhelmed. First, the atmosphere is great. Lots of posters and signs great for us nerds and geeks that get into that stuff. Also, the hummus was good and had great accompaniments. Unfortunately the service was slow and seems unconcerned. It was not that crowded, and they seemed to have the staff. (that has been an issue and I try to give some leeway) Two of our party had wine, and it was not very good. I never knew Hobbits like guac as much as they do because Hobbit Cafe puts gobs of it on everything! Call them what you want but they don't shortchange you on the portions or the toppings. The owner of this place has to be a diehard Lord of the Rings fan because there's LOTR memorabilia all over the restaurant. I'm not a huge fan of this genre but I like themed roller coasters, events and restaurants. I'll always give additional points for places that are creative and original, and Hobbit Cafe is both of these. Now we get to the million dollar question: is the food good? Well, here is my honest answer: it's okay. Yes, the prices are good. Yes, they give you a lot. Yes, they put a lot guacamole on your burgers and sandwiches when most restaurants just give you a tiny amount. However, the food is just average. Note: I had "The Shire" w/fries. Overall, I liked this place. The staff and decor impressed me. This would be a good place to bring someone you know is a fan of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. First off hobbits must have built the parking lot. It's TINY!!! And falling apart. The spaces are designed for like kia souls and honda fits. Once I finally squeezed into a spot I sat on the patio area to eat. The food was mediocre like many have suggested. However the serving sizes are HUGE!!! I had the blackened tilapia with fresh veggies and rice. The cream sauce on top was pretty good except it was too sour. Rice and veggies nothing special. I was told they have good sweet potato fries, well I asked for them and apparently they are just normal fries seasoned to be like sweet potato fries. Eh...Nothing special. Even though everything was delicious, unfortunately we could not finish our food (totally our fault). We ate 3/4 of the nachos and I could only eat 1/4 of my burger and half of my fries. Have you ever been somewhere pretty good like fourstarsgood, made a return visit, and become instantly puzzled about this bizarro-impostor in its place? With all fairness my first time here was for a late dinner out on the patio in the cooler months of the year. Then my next time it was hot, it was lunch, and it was inside. The first time there was perky menu-girl who seated us instantly. The second time there was a nasty orc that felt free to keep saying "in a minute, in a minute, I'll be with you in a minute" so that knocked a lot of points off by making me wait without regaling me in song or lavish compliments about how awesome I am. Just kidding. But the situation could be handled a lot better - like working harder, working faster, taking our party name down FIRST and then go slumbering about menial tasks .... instead of just kind of standing there, glazed over and moving kinda slow. We were sitting in the back room which felt at least five degrees warmer than any other point in the restaurant. It was loud. And the fan was off - are you kidding me? In Houston? Surely a joke. There is very little attention to detail - but at least they don't bother hiding it, they rub your face in it, and would ask you to fill out a questionnaire about the experience if they had a little more motivation in their heart. Order something special and you see what you did NOT order arrive, and the waitress in plain view, just goes ahead and takes it off in front of you, then gives a half-hearted apology with the subtext of "I really don't care dudebro" - that kind of shtick worked well in the movie Juno, but non-moviestars just can't seem to pull it off as well, especially if they look like they need to see an orthodontist. The food is the best part. The food is good. If you can ignore everything else about this place and just focus on the food, you could be a very happy person. If you want ice water in Houston in June, that part is going to piss you off because you got room temperature water. Yum. I would never do lunch here again. I would never come here expecting any kind of decent service. I would never come here between April and late November. I would never sit inside again. I would also like someone else to be driving, seeing as how this is the ABSOLUTE WORST PARKING LOT IN THE WORLD. I brought my Hubby here for brunch during his birthday weekend because of the Lord of the Rings theme. However, I was vaguely disappointed in that part of it-there isn't that much memorabilia and they didn't name their dishes with the theme...which I was expecting. I've heard so many great things about Hobbit Cafe, and being the major Lord of the Rings geek that I am, I thought I was going to be a huge fan - but honestly, I would not come back here. Some of the sandwiches have LOTR themed names and there are a few posters on the walls, but other than that there's really no connection to the franchise whatsoever. We came for dinner and it was already dark outside, so the dimness of the restaurant paired with no natural light made me feel really claustrophobic. I ordered the Smaug's Delight sandwich with shredded carrots on the side with the Mithril Mix smoothie (I'd heard you have to get a smoothie here, otherwise I normally wouldn't order one). The smoothie was good and I liked that they served it in a mason jar, but I would not pay $5 for it. My sandwich was good, and I definitely appreciated that they were very generous with the avocado, but again nothing so special that I'd rush to return. Also, the sandwiches come with a side of shredded carrots. I was initially really excited about this because I love carrot salad, but it was literally a heap of dry shredded carrots. If there were some dressing added I think it'd be good, but I didn't finish them because who wants to just eat forkfuls of dry carrots? Lol not me! Also french fries are $2 extra as a side even if you ordered a burger, which seems odd to me. The menu is so extensive that I'm sure there are other options that are more special, but personally I would not return. Went there yesterday after not having been there in about 10 years. I can only blame my absence on having moved out of Texas in 2001. While I was away, The Hobbit moved to a much larger place. It's still just as quirky and fun as ever. The food is fabulous. We started out with appetizers; spring rolls and spinach mushroom quesadillas. Scrumptious. I could have made a meal out of those alone. My friends split a Hobbit Wrap. It was huge and full of so much food it would've fed me for three days. They looked like they enjoyed it. I had the chicken enchiladas verdes. It was good but I won't eat it again. I was expecting a lot of green sauce. Frankly, it was a little dry and plain. My wife had the spinach and mushroom enchiladas. I should've stolen her plate from her. We gave each other one enchilada from our plates so that we could sample the others. I was much happier with the spinach/mushroom enchilada. It was moist and delicious and I savored each bite. We sat outside so we didn't have a wait. We had reservations, or so we thought, but when we arrived our reservation wasn't on the books. Luckily it wasn't "buggy" out there though certain patrons near us seemed to think it was. They were spraying themselves with "Off" every few minutes and to stay it smelled was an understatement. I don't want to smell that when I'm eating dinner, do you? Oh, Hobbit Café. On one hand, the food here is really, really good. I ordered the self-explanatory boudin burger, and it had one of my favorite foods (boudin) in another of my favorite foods (burger). The sweet potato fries are fried well, and Hobbit has generous portions - good value, in my opinion. BUT. And HUGE buts (I wish I had one!). Service is incredibly lacking, the restaurant has a small bug problem (don't sit near the windows...), and you get charged for every little substitution. * Service: literally sat at our table for a solid 10 minutes before someone took our drink order (keep in mind we got here at 1:30, not exactly the lunch rush - I got seated immediately). When our server was taking care of us, she wasn't the nicest either. I don't expect kissing my ass, but a smile wouldn't hurt. * Bugs: WHY ARE THESE IN HERE. I've read previous reviews that the tables next to the windows have a problem with bugs, and I can confirm. They look like fruit flies to me, and the restaurant doesn't seem particularly dirty, so...why? * Charging for subs: I understand charging for avocado and up-charging sweet potato fries, and I *suppose* I get why cheese is $1, but if you tout yourself as a vegetarian friendly restaurant, WHY do you have an upcharge to make certain dishes vegetarian? Makes absolute zero sense to me; it's almost as if you're penalizing vegetarians for their dietary choices. * Also, super minor issue, but the restaurant literally has zero connection to The Hobbit except for a couple of posters on the wall and naming a couple of menu items after things in Tolkien's series. Hobbit Never Comes Up Short! The Hobbit Cafe has been a Houston favorite since the 70's with many famous and semi-famous customers. They are located off Richmond Ave, but can be easily access via Portsmouth St. Free parking lot is available but can be a real issue due to the popularity of the restaurant. Also, they share the parking lot with another restaurant. Street parking is available all over. It appears that the restaurant was built around a huge Oak Tree and that you are entering a scene from "The Lord of the Rings." The Oak's canopy shades the outdoor deck area which includes several tables. Inside tables and seating is also available. The restaurant is clean and cozy and loaded with theme based fixtures that are worth a look and maybe a pic. Sit in the beautiful wood bench, it's designed for a Kodak Moment. Customers include Locals, Business and Legal Advocates, Tourist, Trendies, Foodies and Kiddies. Any palate can be met, Breakfast, Brunch, Lunch or Dinner, Carnivorous, Pescatarian and Vegetarian. Offering amazing menu choices like, omelets and pancakes (Only available durning Brunch Sat/Sun), fresh fruit smoothies, homemade vegetarian soups and salads, fish chicken tacos and blackened Tilapia, mexican dishes, angus beef and buffalo meat, homemade soy patties and black bean patties. All dishes are presented with confidence and are picture perfect. Desserts include homemade Key Lime and outsourced cakes that are off the hook. Wine and Beer are available boosting many beers on tap. Servers are awesome! Friendly and knowledgable of the menu and will not hesitate to help with a recommendation. They appear to be college students and attentive to your needs and request. ***My recommendation is the Tropical Chicken Salad (Spring Mix with Fresh Fruit and almonds tossed with a Yogurt Dressing and topped with Jerk Chicken and toasted coconut) and the (OMG) Carrot Cake.*** Take-out is available.
