Hopefully, you haven't had to learn the hard way that you should only get your Subaru fixed by a full-time Subaru mechanic. I also had to learn not to get my car fixed in a gambling town (see my review of Pro 1 Automotive in Reno, Nevada), but I do recommend getting your car fixed in Motown. Hodges is fast and fair, and we were able to drive my Subaru back to Los Angeles without incident. I loved being Molly with the California plates, and the car is running like a champ. I stopped in one day just to buy a part for my wife's Tribeca, and this dealership just happened to be on my way home. Phil was the first person I ran in to and he was extremely helpful. He helped me by looking up the part, telling me how much it was and where I could get it. I didn't know that the key to a locking nut was something that I had to special order (duh!) After that was said and done I mentioned that the brand new Legacy in the showroom was really sharp and Phil mentioned that I test drive it. After thinking about it for about a second I was all for it. Phil just handed me a plate and a set of keys to a Legacy that was on the lot. I was really impressed by this because I hate being "sold" a car. I was able to take this car up and down Woodward all by myself. Most places will have the salesman ride with you and talk your ear off the entire time. Doing this I was really able to get a good feel for the car. I actually came back a week later during the Dream Cruise to talk numbers with Phil just so I could get a rough idea of how much I would need to put down to put my payments where I wanted them. A couple of days later I was driving a brand new 2011 Legacy with payments that I wanted and an interest rate that I wanted. With all that being said, the whole crew at Hodges has been very nice and extremely helpful. I have never owned a brand new car before and they have been there for every question that I have had. Took my Forester in for a recall, Jeremy at the service desk was very professional. Gave me a loaner had me on my way quick. Came back at lunch to pickup my car, noticed some dried soap from the complimentary car wash. It wasn't a big deal, but one the employees came by and said he saw me checking it out and he would take care of it. He went ahead and buffed the whole vehicle. These guys are great! read more

I can recommend both the sales and service staff here without reservation. I bought my first Subaru at another dealership because they had the model and color I wanted, but I always had my service done at Hodges because they treated me as though I had bought it from them. I don't think Jeff could mislead a customer if he wanted to because it's just not in his nature. He was always very direct in telling me what I needed to do to my vehicle, and what I DIDN'T need to do. He recommended against certain repairs because he didn't think they made economic sense for me, and he was right. He helped me keep that Impreza on the road for a long time. When I finally sold it, I got a very good price because the buyer couldn't believe what good condition it was in given its age and mileage. I give credit to Hodges for that. When it came time to buy my next Subaru, I decided to give the business to Hodges. Danielle Isabel was incredibly patient with our picky specs for a vehicle (she had to bring a vehicle to Ferndale from southern Ohio because we wanted an Outback with MANUAL transmission in a specific color) and was a pleasure from beginning to end. This was despite the fact that we were using Costco pricing and the dealership profits on our purchase were being dinged as a result. I've been dealing with Hodges Subaru since 2000, because the dealers are helpful and show great integrity, and because they have fast, effective repair service. Just completed a new car purchase with John Gawaran. He is knowledgeable, earnest, and fun to deal with. He clued me into the Costco buying program, which gave a very good price, on the low end of the suggested price from the Consumer Reports car pricing service. When the model and options i needed proved hard to find, he worked tirelessly to find a dealer who would do an exchange with Hodges. John was not shy about getting out the screwdriver and testing out a transfer of my old roof crossbars onto my new Subaru. He also spent about 45 minutes giving my wife and I an orientation all of the features of the Starlink multimedia system. When going to a BRZ I started by emailing the various dealerships as I wanted a quote in writing. Hodges was the only dealership that put the quote in writing including all the options I wanted. Ordering a BRZ took time, as they're made in Japan and shipped to the US. My 2013 BRZ became a 2014 BRZ and Hodges beat their original quoted price by $2000 at time of delivery. By far, Danielle (sales person) has been excellent to deal with. In ordering and delivery. Danielle has also been instrumental in my car measuring and testing for my parents' next Subaru. Can't say enough about Hodges Subaru. Bought an Outback there in May 2018 with excellent communication with the salesman Corey and the sales manager. Really made the experience very fluid and quick. In the same week took my other Subaru ( Legacy ) in for Service for a quirky noise problem. Problem solved and got car back same day. It is not a mistake I tried to give 0 stars but couldnt post without at least 1. . I had a knock in a 2010 Forester's engine. Called service for an estimate on a possible engine rebuild as my assumption was it was driven without oil by one of my children. Needless to say I was given an estimate that if it was the engine after their evaluation, worst case would be $4K for a rebuild based on the description. I asked should I have it towed or drive it - I was advised to add oil and drive it some more and the knock may go away as Subarus are sometime loud and this occasionally occurs. , After driving to see if it went away, it actually seized and I then had it towed to the dealer. After the write up and there complete disassembly of the engine bay, they told me 6-7k. Obviously I told them this was unfair and this is not what I was originally told. I told them well put it back together and I would leave They proceeded to tell me to it would be an additional hourly rate to reassemble my engine and if they stop now I needed to pay them $900 for putting my engine in my trunk and the tech actually laughed when he gave me my car and said "GOOD LUCK PUTTING THIS BACK TOGETHER". After numerous complaints the manager graciously offered $200 back to me. This was 1 year ago and i am still trying to get an engine for my vehicle as the engine bay is completely epmty and it 'was running before the tech recommended "I drive it to see if it goes away ". We all learn from our mistakes but this is not how you treat consumers. The owner/manager should have been responsible for his employee action and at minimum stuck with the original estimate. I will continue to write mpore reviews as this was the worst experience I have had at an auto service shop in my lifetime.update 5/13/18- in their response they mention a " rough quote over the phone" They failed to recognize the issue was that their technician advised me to continue and drive the car - that is what made the engine blow - You need to be responsible for your employees actions. read more

This dealership may be small, but their customer service makes a HUGE impact. The store front and curbside lot are small. Don't let that fool you. The building is small, but clean and well organized. I was initially afraid that many of the cars I had seen on their website were not in inventory. There is a second lot tucked away a few blocks away with a large well stocked inventory. I was shopping for a car to replace my beloved 2010 Impreza that was totalled in a traumatic accident. That was my second Subaru. Both of my prior Subaru vehicles saved my life in accidents. The entire staff took the time to welcome me, hear my stories, offer condolences. I was blown away by how comfortable I was made to feel at a time that was for me personally very difficult. I was afraid to even get in the first car I drove. TJ Mendiola was patient and understanding the entire time. He directed me to drive the first test vehicle to the second lot. Once there I was treated to a hands on sampling of many vehicles. TJ explained the standard features, any upgrade packages of each vehicle in great detail. I was able to quickly compare and sample my options with confidence, feeling I was armed with the best knowledge of the Subaru line possible. I selected a tangerine orange 2013 Crosstrek limited. This is my third Subaru. It's been 4 weeks and I am loving the car. I used the Costco auto program. The entire transaction was handled perfectly by Hodges from initial email to completion of the transaction. I brought my own financing to the table. They ran my credit to see if they could beat my rate. The process was treated as consultative. I didn't feel there was high pressure to use their financing. Picking up the car was simple. All the paperwork was ready to sign. TJ went over the car with me, helped my sync my phone to the bluetooth. The easiest part of the aftermath of this accident was getting a replacement car. Visiting Hodges felt like visiting a family welcoming a new friend. This is a no pressure sales environment with a friendly knowledgeable staff. Bought a used 2011 sti earlier this year from a dealership in florida, mostly because I wanted a hatchback and they don't make them anymore. Had hodges do some repairs. There were many more issues with the car than I thought. TJ made me an offer to buy the car from me for exactly what I paid for it and sold me a brand new 2015 sti at a fantastic price. We were thinking of getting a Subaru Forrester because of the very high rating that Consumers Report had on the vehicle. I went to the Costco Automobile site to see what dealership sells the Subaru with the Costco Discount. Hodges Subaru is the one in our area that offers the discount. Talked to Chuck Modrack the next day, took the Forester out for a test drive and we fell in love with it. Just like most of the Subaru dealerships, the style and color that we wanted was not in there stock or any other dealers stock in the area. Chuck was very helpful in searching out dealerships for what we wanted. We waited for about a week, and then decided to order the exact model along with the options that we wanted. We had to wait about six weeks for the car to come in, but it was well worth it. We are extremely happy with the Forrester and we got what we wanted. This is our second Subaru Forester. I just purchased a 2013 Subaru Tribeca from Chuck Modrack at Hodges Subaru. This dealer goes out of its way to make a big purchase decision low pressure and easy when you are ready to move forward. This is the 3rd car I bought from Chuck and Hodges. Why? While I love Subaru, I was in the market for something different and test drove several mid sized SUV's. What was lacking with the Tribeca (having owned a 2007) was rear leg room and some of the newer technologies. What was lacking in the competitors was the driving experience. The Tribeca is a luxury vehicle and is more comfortable and responsive than the others. In the end, I came back to Subaru because I knew that I loved to drive my 2007 Tribeca and would love the 2013 too. I also believed that the investment I would make would pay off at least as well as it had with my previous purchases. Lastly, and maybe most importantly, Hodges is just a great neighborhood dealer that you can trust on every level. Over the years, I never once felt like anything Chuck said to me was less than the truth. He is actually pretty careful not to over commit or sell you on anything. That really let me make my own decision and I appreciated that. And when it comes to service, the team is awesome. I have known Greg Kracht the service manager longest on that team. He too maintains a commitment to excellence and a high level of integrity that infects others at Hodges. Overall, a great crew from owners to technicians. I have been car shopping for about a month now, I walked into Hodges Subaru in Ferndale, MI checking out the Forester. I was told I would be given an additional $500 towards my trade in towards the lease of a new Forester. After my appraisal came back, a young guy, I believe his name was Dave, he gave me a really low trade-in value and was not including the additional $500. He was very rude and arrogant when I brought it to his attention. He never said anything else after that. He was very unprofessional and most the staff there was not customer friendly what so ever. I was expecting much better customer service from this dealership. I went to Suburban across the street and also checked out a few other dealerships in the area trying to weigh my options of vehicles. Walking into Suburban compared to Hodges, was night and day. Totally different manorism and they were very professional and were concerned about what I was looking for. Suburban even offered $2000 more for my trade-in, A few staff members greeted me, offered coffee or water and I felt very welcomed as soon as I walked in the door. Hodges Subaru in Ferndale are the most arrrogant and unprofessional place I have ever seen. I will NEVER walk in this place or even recommend this place to anyone what so ever. Made a 9:00 am appointment for the 60,000 maintenance on my Subaru Forester. I was told that it could take a couple of hours and that they would call me when my car was ready. Eight hours and three calls later, I was told that they had not even looked at the the car and that they were unable to get to it that day! Made appointment for synthetic oil change and diagnosis of check engine light. Was told it would be an hour as we were waiting for the vehicle. Three hours later the car was finally done. They diagnosed CEL as needing a new gas cap, which they installed. A day later the CEL was back on, same code number as before. Spent $60 for a misdiagnosis, a gas cap that was unnecessary and a wasted three hours. Won't be taking Subaru back to this service department again. read more

I love the service I got at Subaru. Danielle Isabell searched far and wide to find the vehicle I wanted to lease in the color and package I wanted. I got it for my girlfriend as I live on a dirt road with a long rustic driveway. The symetric 4 wheel drive works great. I leased the Imprezza which is a great car. I may switch to a Forrester when they get the CVT option. I recommend Hodges and Daielle if you want a specific thing. To use it, you go on-line and enter the type of car you are interested and your zip code and they provide you with a dealer who participates in their program. When I entered my zip, it came up with Hodges Subaru in Ferndale. I thought, "Okay, where is Ferndale". I learned it was about 30 minutes away. They contacted me and I went in for a test drive. The salesperson, Sheri Lyn Grzywinski, was wonderful. I had hundreds of questions and she was very kind, patient and professional. The entire staff there worked to make it a smooth transaction. I was directed to Hodges Subaru through Sam's Club's auto buying program. I must admit when I found that they were are located in Ferndale (45 minutes from my home) my enthusiasm dampened a bit. I was pleasantly surprised by the prompt reply I received from Danielle Isabell. Finding a 2014 Forester with the specifications/color I wanted proved next to impossible, but Danielle worked tirelessly on searching for one and found one that fit the bill in Ohio. In only about 24 hours time, they had the SUV transported to their dealership and waiting for my approval. Even though Hodges worked so quickly on satisfying my requests, I didn't get the high pressure sales push I have experienced at other dealerships. Danielle Isabell told me I could come out when it was convenient for me. As the vehicle was being detailed for my visit, a minor scratch on the bumper was found. Danielle was up front about it and called me right away to tell me and even sent me a picture of it. The vehicle was immediately sent to have the entire bumper repainted. Danielle did everything she could to accommodate my schedule, even offering to come pick me up at home. In the end, it worked best for us to get the Forester on her off-day. She had all the paperwork in order and TJ (her stand-in) was pleasant and encouraged us to look the vehicle over completely before signing anything. It looked great and now I have a wonderful new SUV! Although I have yet to meet Danielle Isabell, I feel like she is an old friend. I was in the market for a brand new 2015 Forester Premium since a lot of the 2014 have sold out. I was refered to this dealership through the Coscto Auto Buying Program. I worked with John Gawaran and told him what color and trim level I was looking for. He was able to tell me right away what they had coming in and it so happens that one of themwas the right color and trim. I reserved it with a $250 deposit compared to other dealers asking $500 deposit,. He answered all my questions and was very knowledgeable about the product. He made the car buying experience stress free. He even ordered accessories that I wanted from their parts department, so when I took delivery the accesories were already there. Even after the sale, he inquired as to how its going with the new vehicle and if he can be of turther service. This is one dealership that does not forget you after the sale. I am a very frustrated Subaru owner, who has purchased two new Subarus in the past 18 months. Neither from Hodges, but only because, at that time, we were having a hard time finding exactly what we wanted, as no dealers were really wanting to dealer trade. This review has nothing to do with that, however, it has to do with a used Forester, that was on craigslist and the dealer site. I emailed and it took a day or so to get a response, but when I did, it was a very business like response, so I was happy at that time. At no time did the salesperson ask for any other contact information from me. I emailed her back and we exchanged a few more emails, back and forth about the condition of the vehicle. Then I received an email from her telling me that I may want to put a small refundable deposit down on this vehicle as ANOTHER salesperson had a client who was coming to see the car and I would want to hold it if I wanted to see it. I did not see this email for over a half an hour, as I said, she never asked for my phone number, that doesn't show me that she was really interested in my business to tell the truth. I went to answer her email and then another one from her came through telling me "it is no longer available". I then picked up the phone to call her myself. She proceeded to tell me that email/internet leads are not generally serious leads..that did not sit well with me. She also said that it was not her client, it was a client of another salesperson. She would immediately call me IF they did not like the vehicle and then I could put a deposit down on it. (they had 5 days to make it good) This was on the 22nd of Sept. Their 5 days, would have been up on Tuesday of the next week. I noticed throughout the week that this car was still on the site, so I called her back on Tuesday. She told me that she would be off on Wednesday and said they had until 6 pm on Wednesday to either buy it or not. She would let me know. My husband and I decided to call there Wednesday evening. I spoke with a salesperson, told him the situation, he in turn spoke with the manager and I was told, their deposit was no longer valid and they took a $500 deposit from me. Then told me they would let her know and that we could come and drive it the following night. The next day came and by 10:30am, she had still not contacted me, I called her and she proceeded to tell me that someone one was picking it up that day! From what I was told from the other salesperson and the manager, she should have asked me at the time she told me the other person had a deposit on it, that I could have had a back up deposit. SHE DID NOT! Apparently, from what the manager told me, deposit #1 walked away and there was a second deposit, that I was never told about. (her client) I will NEVER step foot in Hodges Subaru as I do not feel as though they are an honest dealership. We since went to another Subaru dealer and have been very happy with them. read more
