Fun fact--since it came from Japan it had all the chips in it and we don't need to take it back for chips like some cars! I am extremely grateful to the man who greeted me at the Service Department yesterday. I told him the hood latch on my car wouldn't close right probably due to the single digit weather. I didn't feel safe driving on the highway in that condition. I hadn't been sitting more than 3 minutes in the waiting room, and the man returned to say it was fixed. He oiled the latch, tested it out, and it worked. I asked him how much I owed him, and he said nothing. Every relationship has that falling out of romance phase. It's been a slow one for me with Hodges. I loved buying my car there back in 2018 before the world fell apart. And when I needed an oil change, Hodges was great. Then, the pandemic hit. And I started driving a fraction of what I used to, stopping by less and less. But when I did I noticed the service starting to slip. Possibly because I'd finished paying off my car loan and slid out of warranty, and of course things were going to start costing money now. So I started getting oil changes at the Pennzoil place around the corner from my house for convenience. Last week, there was an open recall on my car and I needed an oil change so I figured I'd head in. From 2018 to 2022 the first word I'd hear would be there's an open recall. This time, no mention of it at all, which I chocked up to the fact I was in the express lane. The oil was changed. The multipoint inspection showed my brakes were sliding into the red zone and the service advisor said it would be about $500-$800. It felt like dealer prices, but I was driving a time zone over for the Holidays and I asked if they could get me in next week. Which they did, and I figured the open recall would come up then. Cut to today. I drop my car off. The new service advisor says it's probably going to be $1000. $1300 if I need new rotors. No mention of the recall. Half in a daze at 7:45 am I'm not quite sure what I've agreed to until I get the text saying I need rotors too and here's your $1320 estimate. At this point, I don't really care about the open recall. I call the advisor back and say thanks but no thanks, and that someone told me it would be about $500 to $800 and I would've gone somewhere else if I had known. She seemed shocked someone told me that price, and that's not her fault. But it is her fault I hadn't heard about the $90 brake inspection until she was handing me my key back. And at that point Hodges had slid from being more than a car dealer to me to just another car dealer. Long story short, I might bring my car in for an oil change in a few months to another dealer and see if they mention the recall. If they do, that's probably where I'm buying the Outback I've had my eye on in 2026. read more

I had a few terrible experience with Hodges lately. I scheduled an oil change appointment weeks in advance and my appointment still took over three hours. The service guy knocked $10 off my bill without asking and then acted like he was doing me a solid. $10. For an extra 2.5 hours. I won't say what I lost in billables for those 2.5 hours. But the real crappy experience started last year when my drivers window would not go up in cold snowy weather. I took it to Hodges and they said there was nothing wrong with it. This year, when the same problem occurred as the weather got bad, they couldn't get me in for three weeks. My window wouldn't go up reliably in the snow and cold! So I went to Glassman. In and out and fully repaired the very next day. In less time than an oil change at Hodges. And they updated my software. Unfortunately, since Hodges didn't fix the issue while it was under the manufacturer's warranty, I had to pay $125 out of pocket for the deductible on an extended warranty. I called and left a message for the Hodge's service manager and he never called me back. I guess it'll have to wait till the next time I run into him in town. read more

I feel as though I need to share as it's left me feeling swindled after my Outback was in their shop for over 3 weeks. Originally on March 19th, 2024 I had brought my 2012 Outback in for service. I advised Jordan of a water sound coming from the dash. He informed me that the technician would test the system and if there was any issue (including head gaskets) they would be able to diagnose it and get word back to me. I let him know before leaving I tried burping it myself and where I thought the problem might be on front driver side (which turned out to be exactly where it was originating from). Fast forward to March 27,2024 I was given the vehicle back with these notes: "Technician performed cooling system leak test-states no leaks at this time-technician tested headgaskets and vehicle staying at operating temperature. Technician found air in cooling system-technician burped system to correct clients concern. Road tested to verify repairs. Complete. (39 - Nick *****- M284555)" While picking up the vehicle I had noticed coolant on the lower engine cover but was told that was due to having the system burped - then drove home with no issue (5 miles). On March 29th, 2024 I needed to help my father move a storage unit and drove 35 miles there and back to get it done. Half way home my engine dash light came on due to overheating and had to tow it 15 miles back home. I returned the Outback to Hodges 2 days later and was told by Jordan there were blown welds on the radiator, and that the head gaskets have now failed. The repairs to try to undo what was done start at $3000 and would increase as they found more things wrong. Asked about the pressure test and how that would of failed on blown welds? After that he let me know he had miscommunicated in the email and there were not blown welds on the radiator and that this was due to a head gasket failure the whole time. I'm not sure how all of this this would have gone unnoticed with the tests that were performed according to the notes 2 days prior. Especially when a head gasket test was specifically outlined in the work order. After speaking with the service manager Greg I was told there was nothing he could do and that this has now gone from a $500 repair to now a new engine is needed. After I had admittedly lost my temper and started leaving - was approached by Jordan and was told I needed to remove my vehicle right away or they would have in impounded. Luckily I was able to talk to Greg (basically forced to shake his hand) again and have it picked up the next day. They understand they have you at their advantage and it absolutely shows. If this was all found on the original diag it wouldn't be so personal - but the way this was handled was borderline criminal. I'd advise if you do decide to come here to document absolutely everything. I'm now looking at a new engine and maybe some time in small claims once I get the invoice for the new engine. Was promised that the vehicle I purchased was in immaculate condition and nothing was wrong with it. I asked many questions about the vehicle and was lied to by the salesperson. I was told that I could bring the vehicle back as soon as I get my title in the mail. The sales person then changed her mind days later. This dealership is in violation of the Michigan consumer protection act. Even if a vehicle is sold as is, if the sales person or dealership misrepresent or lie about something you ask, they are liable still. That is the exception to the "as is" rule, And yes, I have documentation/proof of this as well. I left a voicemail for the supervisor today. This has been going on for a week now. (Within half an hour after driving the vehicle off the lot, I was having problems.) The dealership would not even carry out their own wheel and tire plan which they sold! Three hours for a tire patch. Which was free because I bought tire insurance from Subaru (which is a waste of money). It's the third time they have patched that tire. If I wanted free tire patching I'd buy my tires from discount. They include it in the cost of the tire. Hodges wastes your time and then tries to please you with a free spray and rinse of your car. Maybe have the guy washing the cars do tire patching? Also I was initially told one hour for the repair. Which is excessive to begin with but I'm an understanding person so I said I'll wait. After the hour passed no one came to check on me or fill me in. Not after two hours. Not even after three. Three and a half hours passed. For a 'free' tire patch. The third one. On the same tire. The second patch you could stick a marker through it was so big. They patched it. And it steadily leaked. But I didn't take it in because I'm busy and anything at Hodges takes over an hour so I avoid going at all costs. And now I will do just that. Avoid Hodges. Which sucks. Because my Subaru is great. Wow the service here is exceptional even though they are a very small dealership. I worked with Sheri to get my mother into the safest vehicle I could find, which was a 2018 Subaru Forester. I wanted her to have every bell & whistle safety feature I could find, which entailed AWD, automatic emergency braking (both forward and in reverse!), forward collision warning, blind spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, lane center assist, adaptive cruise control, steering responsive headlights, high beam assist, navigation, and an SOS button. Sheri understood my needs/wants to get my aging mother in the safest vehicle possible, and went above and beyond to make that happen. Although they have yet to track down the car she wants in the color she wants, with all the safety features I want, she is on the road to make that happen for us. Since I am from out of state and is a fairly new driver it took a while to get car insurance. He was nice enough to help with that situation and even offered to drive my dad and I back while they took care of the registration and whatnot. This would be a 1 star review if it had not been for the exceptional care I received last summer. The service manager was great, he explained everything to me when my head gasket needed to be replaced, and gave be a competitive price. In October, on my way to work (without even 3000 miles since the last service) my low oil pressure light came on and I had no oil in my car. I added four quarts and took it in. I was told they could not tell what it was, but also "don't you know that all Subarus burn oil?" This car had barely over 120,000 miles on it, so I figured whatever, just run it until it dies. This was not the same person I dealt with over the summer. Likely unrelated, I am now smelling gasoline intermittently in the cab, and by now I need an oil change. I drove it in last week and they said "we are so slammed, we can't even look at your car until February" and told me I was having issues because I "overfilled the oil by 1/4-1/2 quart which is worse that running low" and was also told this GEM that makes me never want another Subaru ever again: "I just had a lady in with an '03 Forester like you, just over 100k miles on it, and she just put $10,000.00 in it so it will run another 100k." I may be a woman, and I may drive an older car, but it is not because I lack resources. Incompetent - They replaced a part that I knew wasn't the issue. They replaced it anyway and the problem remained. Go figure. Dishonest - Since it wasn't the sensor, their next attempt was to replace the wiring harness. They didn't replace the harness but told me they did. Corrupt - Charged me $1300 for a job they never did. I only discovered that it's the original harness 2 years later while doing other things to the car. Basically fixed it myself. Location is a little oddly organized and you have to approach it from woodward even though google maps will tell you you can approach from bennet, staff were helpful in pulling my car around however. I commented that the garage bay for oil changes only had one car in it and the staff said it was a slow afternoon... oil change + tire rotation still took 50 minutes and cost ~$80. Don't trust them unless you are ready to cancel your credit card after test driving a vehicle. I have been a new car and service customer of Hodges Subaru for over 10 years. I used to go out of my way to come to get service on my three Subarus done at Hodges (great food in the area). My 2011 Forester, although running just fine, was always requiring me to add oil between changes. I mentioned this at the dealer and received nothing but a shoulder shrug. I was such a loyal Subaru owner that I did not suspect that something was wrong with the car - my first Subaru went almost 300K before it needed anything more than regular maintenance. When it became painful how much oil was being consumed (8-10 quarts between changes), my wife finally convinced me to 'google it', Sure enough, there are many, many people who have had exactly this issue with 2011 Subaru engines of the same type. There have been two or three Technical Service Bulletins on the issue released by Subaru to its authorized dealers. Despite this, Hodges Subaru never mentioned the fact. The next step was to have Hodges perform a "oil consumption test'. Sure enough, the consumption test demonstrated the car was consuming approximately a quart of oil every 600 miles. Even with this evidence that there is clearly the same thing wrong with the Subaru I purchased as with the other Subarus of the same vintage, the best Subaru is willing to do is to pay the dealer $1650 to tear down the engine to further diagnose it. Hodges has told me the 'fix' to the oil consumption issue will cost anywhere from $4000 to $8000. I have gone from being the model 'love my Subaru' owner to the opposite. I feel betrayed by Subaru and let down by my dealer. Hodges should have alerted me to these technical bulletins and should have resolved this issue much sooner. I will now go out of my way to find other Subaru dealers for service. I'll miss my regular visits to Ferndale, I always found a good restaurant while in the area. read more

Said I'd be there the next day to look at it. Well, apparently this little rinky-dink dealership is more about providing cars for the employees to drive than actually selling cars. The car I had called about had been driven home for the weekend by an employee. What?! Is that insane or what? They claim to be the area's only Subaru-only dealership. Hm. There are about 12 cars on the lot. But not the one you want to look at! No worries. I went home, got back on the internet and found a better deal in Toledo. So I guess I should thank Hodges, right? BEWARE - Do not take your Subaru to the service department here. So ever since powder coating my wheels less than a month ago, http://imgur.com/a/jbhf1, I have had this clicking in my left front wheel. I took the car into the Hodges cause I was at a loss of where it could be coming from and just wanted to know what it was so I could fix it. I have taken my car to this dealership before and they seemed to have treated it nice and have good reviews. So, get a call and they say they cannot hear the clicking so I speak to the service manager, Greg, and he takes it for a ride and he did hear it. They tell me they inspected the brakes and the suspension and they think it's the brakes. I go and pick up the car and drive home. Two days later I'm washing the car and notice that the powder coat is chipped off on 2 of my wheels near the lug nuts. http://imgur.com/a/Uka6T So I spoke with the service manager and he told me they never took the wheels off. So they inspected the brakes without taking the wheels off? I took the car up there and they looked at it, took some pictures, and called me today saying that they didn't take the wheels off so they didn't cause the damage. I'm super bummed cause the wheels have to be re powder coated and I haven't even had them for a month. I think it's really crappy for Hodges to deny the damages. This is a pretty clear cut case of dealership damage. I called and left a message for the owner but haven't heard from him. I will edit my review once I hear back from him. Your move Hodges. Edit: spoke with the owner Felipe Mendiola and here is his response to the $300 estimated damage on my wheels. Mind you these are stock wheels with stock lug nuts. Hey Christian. If all those marks happens from onetime wheel r n r. You won't have any paint left after 4 wheel rotation. Not a bad route to take but in this case I have pictures of the wheels after powder coat, after I installed the wheels with my expensive lug nuts, as well as pictures of my wheels with the stock lug nuts that show no damage done by myself. If love is what makes a Subaru a Subaru, then my slow-burning romance reached that honeymoon period when my beloved vehicle made it through a Michigan winter without one white-knuckled moment of slipping or losing traction on our terrible roads. I renew that love in every moment of inclement weather or the hair-raising commute down I-75, like this morning, when some driver decided to slam on their brakes. I narrowly avoided a pile-up thanks to my Subaru's ABS systems, while the drivers behind me will be making insurance claims. The basis of this review relies on the parts and service department, rather than the new/used purchase. Read my previous review for an accounting of how that turned out. I owe my chariot's fine condition to my partnership with Hodges Subaru, which fast became my local dealership of choice. Proximity to my home helps and Hodges has the hometown feel due to its relatively small footprint, rather than those huge, sprawling dealerships full of a hundred cars and a changing array of salespeople. I meet the same people whenever I come in to the service department, and while not on a face-to-face basis with the mechanics, I recognize the fine technicians helping me to keep Zorya (my vehicle) in prime condition. One huge plus: the online reservation system allows for a quick survey of the service area's schedule. No more waiting on hold or playing calendar roulette trying to find an opening! Better yet, the system accommodates notes and selecting issues, much like I wish physicians' offices had, so I can track those pernicious little issues rather than forgetting them while on the spot. Hodges accepts over the phone or drop in requests, and even better, they offer evening and Saturday hours for those of us with 9-to-5 jobs. Mike in particular has helped me troubleshoot issues, saving me hundreds of dollars. Yes, you read that right. The dealership actually saved me money. I'm a firm advocate in knowing a good independent mechanic, especially when your dealership isn't down the road. This may be the first time I kindled a firm relationship with a local dealership, due in large part to the service team's ability to diagnose the issues with my vehicle and offer an alternative that did not force a new, expensive fix or diagnostic test. When it looked like I might be out a couple hundred dollars for a problem, he and the tech discovered an oil filter hadn't been installed correctly at my last oil change. They put me on the road with money still in my bank account, and Zorya continues to operate wonderfully. Went to Hodges Subaru today for an oil change... they asked me if my car came with the leather seats to which I answered, "Those are seat covers." After cashing out with them and getting back into my car I noticed the driver side seat cover was removed to the point of barely hanging on... sagging off of the front of the seat. Who does that?! The cover takes some effort to remove. It doesn't just fall out. It was frustrating because it takes a bit of work to put back in it's place and it makes me think someone was scoping around the interior of my vehicle. I left feeling uncomfortable with the service.
