This is some of the best chicken fried steak I have ever eaten. The breading is perfectly seasoned, just the right amount of salt, pepper and a slight hint of garlic. Nice and crunchy, served under a layer of delicious cream gravy. Cooked perfectly, just like my Grandma used to make. The homemade mashed potatoes and yeast rolls were amazing! WHAT A TREAT! Every single time I have had a meal here I have had something different. Seems like an almost endless supply of options. It's got a good atmosphere. The food is delicious. Our steaks were prepared just as we asked and had a good flavor. The staff seemed preoccupied, but provided good service. I had boudin balls as an appetizer. They were delicious but overpriced at $2.50 per ball. The beer was ok. The happy hour price was overpriced at $2.99 for 12 ounces of draft beer. The price of 2 steak dinners with two beers apiece was almost $100. We probably won't go back until after we win the lottery. It's an old school small town honky tonk kind of a place, complete with George Strait playing over the speakers in the "smokin" section and "kuntry" kitsch for decoration. With a groupon in hand, I ventured in to Hofbrau Steaks. They had a large smoking section for those that wanted but it didn't interfere with us. The wait staff was busy but the service was prompt. Every one enjoyed the fried mushrooms for an appetizer with the salads served soon after. All our steaks were cooked to order and the variety of sides ordered were presented well. This place has been a fixture in this small town for 20+ years and it has never been outstanding, but also never bad either. Long before the area became the suburbs, Hofbrau was offering friendly service and adequate meals. Over time, while they've maintained the image of the restaurant, the quality of the food and the value for the money has decreased significantly. The menu prices are astounding when compared to other steakhouses. They boast "Nolan Ryan" beef as a selling point and presumably a price driver, but I can buy the same cuts of meat at the local grocery store for FAR less and it's honestly substandard regardless of where it's purchased or cooked. $35 for a 16oz ribeye steak that's mediocre (at best) is absurd. Even a filet at better known and higher quality places isn't that much. Not to mention there's a fee for a baked potato. Appetizers are over priced and for average food. The stuffed shrimp tasted like spoiled fish. Sour and very pungent tasting and smelling. Not edible. They're also priced individually (who even does that?) at over $3.50 each. Each! Also the "Texas Dip" sandwich is advertised on the menu seemingly as high quality thin sliced beef with sautéed onions and mushrooms. Reality: over cooked, over salted pot roast with 4 mushroom slices and a few strips of almost raw onions. Don't swap fries for onion rings. The plate came with 5 smallish rings. After sending the rancid shrimp back, we did get the $8 for 2 shrimp comped - but the management couldn't be troubled to stop by our table at all. No apologies, no anything at all. read more

What a great little steakhouse! The outdoors of this restaurant is reminiscent of an old cabin with a wrap around porch. The interior is also cabin-like and is very warm and cozy feeling. We were greeted by James when we entered and he sat us at the table of our choice. I ordered the half pound pork ribeye (a boneless pork chop) with grilled veggies and a baked potato. My father got the chop as well with the grilled veggies and green beans and my mother got the beef tips and gravy over mashed potatoes(and they are real mashed potatoes) and a side of green beans. You can get the chop grilled on an open flame or seared on a flat grill. My father got his seared and I did the grilled. Both were quite tasty but I preferred the taste of the flame grill. I asked for extra sour cream on my baked potato. This is the first time at any restaurant that I actually got a LOT of sour cream. The potato was perfectly done. Very hot and fluffy. The grilled veggies were tender crisp and the porkchop was very juicy. My parents both said the green beans were very good and their meals were quite yummy as well. We also got the onion ring appetizer. These onion rings were fantastic. Big thick onion coated in a flavorful crispy coating. James was also our waiter and provided exceptional service. The other staff were quite friendly as well. Great food and exceptional service make this a definite go-to place for me. read more
