I don't know that there's anything that sets them apart from the other similar places in town, aside from the what-would-seem-to-be-intentional misspelling of hoagie in their name. They don't use the highest quality meats, the butt-end of the bread on my "chicken hogie" was kinda hard - not sure if it was stale from sticking out of the bags they store them in. Service is friendly enough. Hoagie, submarine, hero, grinder - everyone has their own name for it. Since discovering cheesesteaks, I've been on a quest to sample all the ones I could find in Tucson. Hogie House has been on my list for some time, and I was glad to finally cross it off my list! It was a pretty solid 3 star experience. Service was great, the guy at the counter couldn't have been nicer or more courteous. Atmosphere leaves something to be desired, but hey this is kind of meant to be a dive sandwich shop. My husband got the Carmichael, and said he liked it. I got the cheesesteak, of course, and it was good--not great. I still haven't found any place I like more than Frankie's. My previous reviews for the speedway location and 22nd St location were 5 stars because the foods amazing!! And very friendly service. But I'm thinking my last 3 visits are my last. It's become so pricey that as delicious as it is. I can't justify $22+ for one combo meal. ( 12" Italian sausage plain with extra cheese, fry and coke. I went to golden corral yesterday. All you can eat and drink was $7 less. We were at Chili's and was less as well. Fast food is getting ridiculously priced. I feel for the hoagie house and more as I know their cost and payroll has increased greatly as well. But if I'm spending less to dine in, and some like golden corral being all you can eat. Okay, like an anthropologist, I need to explain my bias first. My first job ever was at the Hogie House, back when it was the west half of the Chicago Bar. I worked for the founder, George Raizk senior, and now his son, George junior, is probably nearing Social Security age. George spelled it Hogie, without the "a" in it, which was incorrect, but that just made the Tucson stores special. Since that's where I started, I always want to correct the ones I see out of town. George came from Philly, and brought the recipes with him. Although they don't use all the meats and cheeses as they did when I worked there in the Sixties, they still put tiny slices of pepperoncini, a light dusting of orgegano, some olive oil, and a goodly mix of meats, cheeses, lettuce, tomatoe, and onion on the "Carmicheal," the housed specialty. But then there's the Steak and Onions, where the meat and onions are grilled as you wait and it comes to you hot and juicy. They didn't used to put cheese on them, but once you do you have the classic Philly cheesesteak. I won't bother talking about the changes they've made as people's diets have changed. The old recipes are tried and true. It would be like going to a Mexican restaurant and reviewing their hamburgers (although some have pretty good ones, why you order one when the tamales are so good?). Best of all, the Hogie House is on Speedway, where everything good was in the Sixties when we teens had cars and cruised the Strip. The other stores are great too, but they don't have the big hand-painted sign inside that is a rewrite of "Lazy, Crazy, Hazy Days of Summer" made popular by Nat King Cole, where George senior cleverly inserted "Hogies" wherever the word "pretzels" appeared. It's worth the stop of an old-time Tucson landmark like that, even though the store is different. Plus, if you can answer the daily trivia question, you get a free cookie (which I've had the honor to receive a few times). If you go, go for what they specialize in, and enjoy! There is a cinematic moment when you walk in, hear bits of conversations, both in front of and behind the counter, and meet the gaze of the cashier. I ALWAYS visit on Mondays when there are some very nice discounts going on! The 9 inch for $5-something is just right. I prefer the Carmichael which has cheese and ham in addition to what you would find on a regular deli sandwich. The BUN or BREAD, or ROLL, whatever ya call it, is SO much better than Subway or similar! Just put some mayo on a roll... I'll eat that, even, their rolls are so good! A small potato salad for about $2.25 is perfect to have with one's sandwich. The females behind the counter make consistently better sandwiches than the guys, its as if they want to feed me ...I love that! Any bad reviews come from the fact it's probably one of the guys that made the sandwich. This place is never crowded; never more than a two or three minute wait. If I wanted ambience or table service, I'd have more money and live in the hills. For Speedway and Rosemont, the Hogie House beats the competition. read more

Grew up in Tucson and only ate here a few times, but then discovered it after moving back. The Chicken Hoagie with jalapeno chips and a Big Red are AMAZINGLY PERFECT in their mix of texture, flavor and presentation. The restaurant itself is vintage 70's Tucson decor but man that chicen cutlet and the delicious hoagie roll are amazing. It's on my top 10 list of place to hit when I come back to visit Tucson. First time at Hogie House. First impression as you walk in is the light film of grease you feel. Usually not a great sign, but at least it wasn't as heavy as Lucky Wishbone. 5 stars for the cashier, she was super helpful and rung up everything maximizing any deals they had going on at the time. 3.5 stars for the food. We ended up ordering the meatball sub, chicken hogie, and a 1/2 moon burger in a pita along w/ potato salad and french fries. The meatball sub was pretty good and filling. The chicken hogie the same. The 1/2 moon burger in the pita was alright, but was messier than we wanted since it soaked right through the pita. Fries were super salty and the potato salad was decent. I can see how this would be the go-to place for local business since its quick and easy. I wouldn't turn the place down if we had to come back, but I don't think I could see myself eating here regularly (at least once a week). read more

Why when I go to you stores, both of them, your doors are locked, and your drive has been closed. I have tried one Saturday going to the Speedway store and your card reader would not work so after my meeting I tried going to your 22 Second street store at 8:00PM and it was closed. I like your sandwiches, so I tried Sunday at 1:00PM Closed then Monday and then Wednesday closed. Are you closing down your restaurants like you did on Oracle Road like a few years ago? When I would try to go there for lunch. I enjoy your food but I most likely will try again but my patience is wearing thin. I love hoagie house. I've been a customer since the 70s. I went there today, happy to still be supporting a local Tucson staple, and was so disappointed about the service. The sandwiches we got were awesome, thankfully, but I don't understand how a presumably struggling business in these 'trying times' would hire someone who clearly did not give a sh-- about the customers. When I called in to place my order, the phone rang at least 30 times. I thought maybe they'd closed for good. When someone finally did answer, clearly this person could not have cared less about providing good customer service. In fact, it was clear that she was bothered by a customer. I'm giving a 3 star review only because of the service not the food. Have been a loyal customer for 35 years and love, love, love the food. Don't get to enjoy it much since they closed the Oracle Rd. store so really look forward to it when I'm across town and can go to the Speedway store since it's an hours drive one way from my home but.... My husband and I went there Saturday and the gentleman at the register taking the order acted like he wished he was anywhere else but there and we were a bother to him. Didn't greet us upon arrival, didn't ask what we'd like, didn't repeat the order back to ensure he had it correctly, actually he never spoke a word to us period! Got the order didn't have salt or pepper on sandwiches had to go back and ask for packets, that was another inconvenience for him apparently. I have to say, I never even had a chance to taste the food, so I can't say if it would have been worth it to stand in line longer then the 15 minutes I did. I saw only a few cars in the lot so I figure a quick lunch, right? And I've wanted to try this place since I drive by it twice every day. When I enter, their is one lady in front of me discussing ( I think) a possible catering. I think hey, I understand, I know he's doing his best. So I wait behind this lady for 15 minutes, during which additional customers enter and stack up behind me. There's another worker walking around, slicing meats or something. Bottom line, at no time did either employee acknowledge me: say hi or I'll be right with you, or anything. He could have even asked the lady he was speaking with to hold on one minute while he helps those behind her. Do you think she would have understood, since after 15 minutes the line is to the door? Nancy B's review is similar to my experience, but sadly, mine was far worse. From the moment I walked in, the cashier seemed like he was irritated. I was up sold on onion rings without being told, and the total for a 9' terrible sandwich, 4 onion rings and a small coke was over $11! What they sell are NOT cheese steaks, but a small amount of low quality "beef", a few onions and an enormous amount of lettuce. Lettuce does not belong on a cheese steak, especially if that is the main ingredient. I asked for a to go bag for my dog, and the cashier asked if every thing was alright. I said I did not appreciate being up sold without being told. He proceeded to get very rude and indifferent about my feedback. It was really dead on a Saturday night at around 6:30-7:00pm, not sure how this place stays in business, maybe its a lunch crowd type of establishment. At any rate, here's my review: Really friendly staff, made us feel welcomed. The meats were good, fresh tasting. The bread was lackluster, the white/Italian bread seemed low quality, po' boy style and the wheat bread seemed like it was nearly over baked on the outside, crunchy seeds in the middle. I had to remove the top layer to avoid the burnt bread taste. I've driven by this place several times and have always wanted to try it. Now that I have I'll probably keep on driving and stop at the nearest eegee's. Grade C: mediocre. read more

I have to admit, I'm not really a big sandwich fan. I'm kinda...meh' when I'm offered a ham and cheese or a PB &J. But every now and then, I'm craving a cheesesteak. I'm taking gooey provolone, meaty steak slices and grilled onions on a bun that might not necessarily fit in your mouth on the first try. So I stopped with kids in tow after work, hoping for a boring sandwich for them (yeah, I said it...boring sandwich. Those with children under ten will know what I mean) I have to say, I was impressed with the service and politeness of the staff. My wife and I stopped in the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. We're from California and haven't lived in Arizona for over 25 years. Foster helped us out and He spent so much time talking to us and engaging us that we felt totally taken care of. He made us feel like we were guests at the four seasons resort. The absolute best customer service that we've ever had anywhere in Tucson for any price. Then came the sandwich... It was the best Italian grinder I think either one of us of ever had in her life.
