Randomly stopped by when walking back to my car. The "Original Taro Donut" sign caught my eye. I got the Purple Haze donut and it's got to be the most unique donut experience I've ever had. I didn't realize the donuts themselves were made of taro and made fresh to order! A bit pricier but that's to be expected from a gourmet experience. My donut came in a cute little box. This little shop at Ward got the CUTEST doughnuts!! I saw them on IG and I had to go try it for myself! Location: they are at Ward, same area as piggy smalls! Parking: free parking at the structure unless you like valet. There is also street parking too. Food: these doughnuts were so cute and full of sweet flavor! My toddler fell in love with them and would hold them like they were her own babies. I loved that they use local ingredients to make them. The flavors change all the time so you just gotta keep trying. Price: it's not cheap, but for the ingredients they use, it's worth it. For the coffee lovers, they got stuff for you too! Besides malasadas I can't think of another bakery that you can order donuts and wait while they prepare and you'll receive it fresh and hot. I walked in expecting to see a showcase of donuts to pick from, I got confused and turned to the limited menu of special one of a kind unusual flavors. I didn't mind the wait as they fried my made to order donuts with freshly untouched glaze straight into my box! It was meant for me to bring home to share, but when I got the box and smelled the goods, I sat on the benches right outside this place and had to have one. They are right, very light, crunch in each bite, fluffy innards, and nice colors in their $12 sampler. As I entered their establishment, it was very spacious and such a small space behind where the donuts are made fresh. To get that crunch...it must be fried or baked at a high temperature, then lowered the temperature... whichever technique they used. Açaí Donut is sweet, but not sure if it tastes like Açaí, but added sweet thin dried strawberries and flavored sweet drops sprinkled on top. Sugar donut had edible flowers on it...interesting. The chocolate swirl was a deep rich chocolate flavor and my favorite. However, the maple donut had toasted coconut that a different additional flavor. I happened to walk-in looking for coffee and discovered they have vegan donuts. Who knew? With the help of the cashier, I decided on trying the OG original and the special yuzu donut. Great space for a quick dessert. These donuts are so good when fresh and with a cup of coffee. I personally enjoy the sweetness level. It feels slightly less sweet than other donut shops and for me that helps the flavor shine more. Otherwise a lot of places all i taste is sugary glaze. I love coming to Holey Grail Donuts for when I get a donut craving! I like that they always have a rotating menu since all their different flavors are so good! I got the Lydgate Farms and the sunrise shack donuts. They were fresh and hot when I got them. You can't go wrong with any donut you get from here!! I tried their ube matcha and it was good but couldn't really taste the ube. I love their cashew coconut milk that they use. It always has such a good creamy flavor. Doughnut was fantastic but the Latte was one of the worst I ever had. It had tasted of water with the after taste of coffee and they didn't even give me the cocoa nibs that is supposed to be in there so it was basically the standard Latte just a dollar more. Another great find while walking around Ward! What makes this donut place unique is that all their donuts are TARO based! This gives it a softer chewier feel than traditional donuts; not quite mochi, but not quite normal cake bread either. We went in and ordered the tasting menu, which consists of their 4 seasonal flavors ($12). The lady at the front told us it would be 6 minutes for the donuts to be ready, which I found funny and oddly specific. 6 minutes later, 4 adorable donuts were born! One of the donut meccas in the US is Portland Oregon, home to many "micro" donut shops- the mom n pops that developed there own donut identity and following. In Yelp Type in "Donut", location- Portland Oregon and you'll see what I mean. Many a time when we visited friends and family in Oregon we would make our pilgrimage for some great donut delights. Hawaii has now risen to the challenge and a slew of donut designers have come to fruition on our shores. And I don't just mean Honolulu either. But this review focuses on a shop I have wanted to try but never had a chance to check out until recently, "Holy Grail Donuts". They have a surprisingly light, cake donut base (taro) with a multitude of topping flavor combinations that are offered on a rotating/seasonal basis. The donuts sell for $4 each or if you buy 4, selected by the store, the total would be $3 each or $12 for this sampler box. They are essentially cake donuts with ono toppings that they make while you wait. No show cases with donuts on display, you look at the board, order your donuts and wait for your order. This being my first time I went for the tasting box which on this day contained: Chocolate Crunch (Hawaii chocolate single source nibs), Wild Guava with bee pollen, North Shore with tangelo, turmeric and black pepper, and Saffron Snickerdoodle rolled is sugar. They use locally sourced ingredients as much as possible and it shows in the taste. The taro donuts themselves were very tasty, light and not oily tasting at all. (They use coconut oil) Each flavor was subtle but pleasing and tasted great. I was most interested to taste the tangelo, turmeric, black pepper flavor and it did not disappoint. A nice citrus taste, with that little something that you can't put your finger on. The stronger tastes were brought out with the chocolate and guava flavors which were also good. The snickerdoodle donut was bathed in sugar and tasted great. The donuts have just the right amount of topping to donut ratio, neither overpowering the other. So easy to blimp out with so many great donut shops in Hawaii now. The need to keep disciplined to not overdose on donut delights was never stronger than now. Can't wait to try some of the other offerings the next time I'm in the mood for cake donuts with a bit of exotic sweetness. read more

Bit pricy for what it is but the donuts here are delicious! I came on a Monday afternoon around 3:30 and the store was pretty empty. They offer some drinks as well, but I was here to try their famous taro donuts ($4 for all flavors or an original glazed). There are four flavors which are swapped out on a weekly basis. I got the Purple Haze, which comes with ube and lilikoi glaze. The donuts are made to order, so I had to wait a few minutes for my donut to be ready. It was pretty good. I could definitely taste the taro in the donut, but it was a subtle flavor. The ube and lilikoi on top added a sweet flavor to it. Like I mentioned before, it is a bit pricy, especially given the small donut size. That's why I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5, but I did enjoy my donut here. read more

I was excited to come here, having read reviews about gluten free donuts, only to find out that they use cake flour and their donuts are "very low in gluten" but not gluten free. Despite living only a block from this place I have never tried. But finally got to try their donuts at the Ward Village Mother's Day event yesterday and their donuts were AMAZING! It was still warm when we had it! And the edges are still slightly crispy/crunchy! I have also always loved the mocho-like consistency (like that of Mister Donuts in Japan/Taiwan) or like Modo's here. The dough on these donuts is like those but I feel it's even MORE chewy! . The size of the donuts are great as well and makes for good portion control! The normal sized donuts are often too big for me! I had their chocolate donut but my friend said the original had such a strong and unique vanilla flavor that he actually liked that one more! Fresh out of the oven (frier)! The first time I had the donuts, I thought it was ok. I waited too long to eat it and it was cold when I tried a bite. You absolutely cannot eat these donuts any other way! They must be hot! I'm so glad they were able to open up a shop. The taster box is the way to go! This way you can try all 4 specials and it's totally Instagram worthy! The specials for that day was guava, lilikoi, sesame, and coconut. The guava had colorful edible flowers sprinkled on top. Ahhhh my wallet hates how good these things are. I normally won't get anything besides a plain glazed donut but so far every single flavor has been a winner. Cardamom rose is my #1 so far. More importantly, the donut itself is sooo good. Exterior is almost like a fresh andagi, crisp and crumbly, just oily enough to be flavorful and not greasy. Inside is chewier than regular donuts, apparently bc it's made with taro. Clarified with a worker, it is not gluten free. Anyway for $4.50 per barely 3-inch donut...well we keep coming back so it must be worth. Drinks are fine. As a lactose intolerant person I appreciate that they use cashew milk by default (no lactose intolerant tax! And it's not nasty almond milk!) The chai was a little bland even after adding syrup, same with the ube latte. The mocha (cacao?) latte was pretty good with some vanilla syrup. I'm usually skeptical of really hipster/gentrified places touting sustainability and local sourcing, but they do showcase their supply chain. Located on the former Paina Cafe, this is an easy place to spot & one of the place I want to have a quick hangout with friends while having a quick bite. I walked in and immediately did a double inhale because it smelled so good. I wish I had a chance to try their coffee but maybe next time. Schrute Farms (Maui strawberry, beet, thai basil) - Honestly loved this flavor so much because all the flavors were extremely subtle and I could really taste the freshness of the donut. I was a little worried about the beet at first, but it still tasted amazing. Love letter no. 9 (lavender, lemon, black pepper) - If you love lavender, you will definitely love this! I didn't get too much of the black pepper which was nice but the lavender and lemon complemented each other so well. POG (local passion fruit, orange, guava, Tahitian lime zest) - Probably my least favorite because the orange flavor was super strong whereas I wish the passion fruit was more potent. I love carbs, desserts and sweets. This is why we all gained that quarantine 15 during pandemic. Luckily, I am motivated to workout 4-6x a week just so that i can afford to eat anything i want to! LOL One afternoon me and my friend swung by Holey Grail so that I can try these donuts. I haven't read any reviews, never got around trying them out, I pretty much don't know about them. She suggested I bring home a tasting box so that me and my husband can sample some of their flavors but to make sure we have them while they're warm that same day. The store is really cute, there was no line, donuts are a bit on the pricey side too. We got each of our boxes about 5 minutes after ordering. I bring them home to share, and they're good. Whatever oil they fry it in, is different from what my normal tastebuds are familiar with. The size of the donuts reminds me of the small white Loves Bakery donuts you'd buy from the grocery store lol. But back to HG's donuts, one of them had flower petals on it, it tasted fine. All donuts were good and all were gone in one sitting hehe. I wasn't in love with them, nor did I find them bad. It was just good. Maybe I'd have to go back and try other flavors. WOWOWOWOWOW! I heard about this place, but my son went to get these and brought them home. I wasn't NOT expecting anything different. I mean, come on, we have all eaten donuts and we all have our favorites. There were 4 donuts and this is the first time I was simply blown away at how good a donut can taste. They were not overly sickly sweet like other donuts. In fact, each one had a distinct flavor; and the crunch! Let's talk about a crunch that lasted over 20 mins later (remember this was takeout). Crunchy, salty, sweet, unusual. It was like eating something familiar yet very different! These "donuts" rock big time!!!!! I heard they come from Kauai and while I am from the Big Island, those people from Kauai are amazing!!!!! The island has fabulous singers and I play with two of them! Holey deliciousness! These donuts are yummy! My friend gave me a tasting box for my husband's birthday last month. It came with four flavors that were all very good. The donuts are not overly sweet and the the different glazes compliment the donut itself. It's located right next to where their truck used to be, in the old paina cafe. Not sure if this was normal but they only had 5 flavors to choose from. I decided to try the strawberry fields and my husband got the L&L. $4 for a donut is pretty pricey in my opinion but I liked that the donut was fresh and made to order. The strawberry fields had a good taste and L&L was also good but I would've liked a little more lemon flavor. It reminded me of a churro texture. The staff was very friendly and the wait wasn't too long to get a fresh donut. Next time I might try another flavor and get a coffee the next time. read more

I was excited to try these because past reviews said they were gluten free. I'm going to clear this up right now: they are absolutely not gluten free. I end up with a Holy Chai latte, while my partner had two donuts: a chaga chai and a miso honey. He says eat them hot and enjoy the unique flavors. They are soft inside and crisp outside. My Holy Chai was delish! It had homemade nut milk (on tap! So cool!). The shop is cute, trendy and clean with outdoor seating and easy parking. Service is quick. Don't do it. Holy Grail Donuts are nothing to write home about. We could have been satisfied with our donut in its nice packaging IF the service was not painful! It was our first time to holy grail donuts. I LOVE donuts! So I was excited to indulge in a new donut shop. We weren't greeted by pleasantries... donuts make me happy, so I thought I could expect a pleasant greeting. We asked questions about the donut options only to be briefed by a less than interested employee. We ordered our over priced donuts. We waited outside because it was too hot in the store. When our order was ready the same unpleasant employee brought us our order. Packaging is classy, almost high end. What ruined the experience for me was the delivery of our order by this clearly unhappy employee. No thank you, no smile. The donuts were warm, which was nice, but if someone were to tell me that I could never have this donut again in my life. I would be perfectly fine. Holey Grail is simply holy for using taro to create their donuts! My friend, who's vegan, found this place for us to try and it was pure perfection. We're already planning our next visit to come back and try their other flavors! What I love about these donuts are the unique flavors and combinations. They rotate their menu daily so I recommend checking their IG, website, or coming into the store to stay up to date! I opted for the Strawberry Fields donut. The donut wasn't overly sweet. It was dense, had a slight crunch, and you could taste the strawberries in it. In terms of customer service, it was wonderful! The worker at the counter talked story with us and explained the menu since it was our first time. He also kindly boxed up our donuts together, which was appreciated! Parking is free and easy. I parked in the Ward Village lot by Genki. Apple Maps says Holey Grail is on Ala Moana Blvd. but it's actually off of Auahi St. We used Apple Maps to find it and got a little lost, which was my fault. Holey Grail's easy to spot from the street but if it's your first time going I recommend following directions off of Yelp or Google Maps. read more
