I first tried Holy Basil by ordering their egg rolls for delivery on DoorDash and they were SO good that I had to place a pickup order just to see the restaurant in person. Turns out it's tucked inside a hidden little food hall in DTLA, with plenty of table seating. Such a cool, lowkey spot. I'm a big lover of egg rolls and lumpia, and when I tell you these egg rolls are next level... they're unique, insanely crispy, super flavorful, and LONG (like, laughably long lol). They're filled with pork and come with a delicious Mae Ploy sauce that complements them perfectly. Super tasty and officially my new favorite egg rolls right now. initially thought $10.50 for three was a bit pricey, but after seeing the size and tasting them, they're 100% worth it. I crave them anytime I'm in the area. I also love the packaging and overall aesthetic, and I'm definitely coming back to try more of the menu (Pad Thai is next). The employee who handed me my meal was polite and acknowledged me right away when I arrived to pick up. Highly recommend checking them out.
Heard so many things about this place from peers! So excited I ran into this Thai shop. I love the decor and the seating all the small details like their pink plates Love that you can see inside the kitchen especially when they making your food. Food came delivered to our table piping hot! I've never had drunken noodles before I like that they have two different types of noodles you can choose from. Definitely has a kick of spice I was sweating up! Really glad I got to try! gotta come back to eat the whole menu
Just had my first meal at Holy Basil and everything was absolutely delicious. Every dish hit the mark and I honestly can't wait to go back for more. The manager, Aron, was great too... friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience even better. If you're in the neighborhood, this place is a must. Ambience is really nice clean welcoming. I love the holy basil light. It's a really cool vibe on the inside like an outdoor market at night.!
I'm glad I got to try Holy Basil! A little hard to find, as it was located in a food court-esk place in the fashion district (?) there were shops on shops selling suits for a great price on the same street. Had to order my go-to: pad see ew. Service was great, very friendly! They have a few tables designated for their restaurant but other seating around as well. The pad see ew was very good, just enough flavor of salty/sweet. They give you a good amount. I can say that out of all pad see ew I've tried, this one is most comparable to Hanuman Thai in OC (my favorite...). I chose pork loin in mine out of shrimp and tofu. It was flavorful and tender, I normally don't like pork that much but it blended nicely with the noodles. If it is in your interest to visit, please do! The quality of food and flavor definitely lives up to the hype :)

Good Thai food in LA with moderate menu pricing. Located in a small food hall competing with a Pizza Hut and Broken Mouth (renowned Hawaiian fusion), it holds its own. The Pad Kee Mao was nothing crazy with a $4 up charge for 3 pieces of shrimp. The Green Curry and Grandmas Fish and Rice are what you should get from here. Service was friendly and attentive with everything we needed. I'd say it's worth a try if you're in the area and Broken Mouth is too long of a wait.
This place has a fun vibe, very small but surprisingly echoey when you first get in there. We did not have reservations one bri arrived but we are lucky that it was only a 10 minute wait. I think we got some of the best spots in the place though, at the bar, so we can see where all the magic happens. However like I mentioned earlier it is so noisy in there! The venue is pretty small and because the room shape is relatively boxy with hard walls and with the kitchen up in the action makes for a relatively loud ambient noise space. I think the place has enough charm and various sounds going on to justify probably not having music, but I'm pretty sure there is something playing that was echoing in the place, but couldn't tell you what it was. Anyways enough on that. The food really does have a very eclectic approach, I think drawing together Thai in Mexican influence, at least based on my taste. The rice dish was a little bit plain but very fresh and well executed based on the ingredients contained within. The chicken dish was enjoyable it was a fried chicken as it's protein which had a subtle crunch yet perfectly cooked and delicate on the chew. The sauce was an unmistakable mole type sauce flavor And while good as a combination I thought it lacked a little bit of depth in the flavor. The wagyu steak dish had great flavors textures and overall good combination but boy does it kick you in the butt on the spice level. I would not order that last one again unless there's a way to adjust the spice level. We weren't asked about spice level so I'm not sure if that's something that typically comes up or if it's a common concern for guests. The last dish we had was the key lime pie which to me was the star of the show. It is homemade and I probably could eat two more slices of that in one sitting. I would definitely come back, but I would certainly choose different entree options to get a better feel for the restaurant. And I'll probably order that key lime pie again, so good!
My gf loves thai food and I recently found time to get an order in after work. We got the pad kee mao, gra pow eggplant, and chicken and rice. I waited about 30 minutes for my order to be ready even after ordering for a specific time pickup. The pad kee mao was my favorite of the 3. The noodles were chewy and springy and I loved the strong taste of the sauce they used. The generous amount of veggies and soft chicken meat was tasty too. I usually don't like eggplant, but the gra pow eggplant was delicious. I loved how soft and almost mushy the eggplant was along with a light eggplant taste. The addition of the mushier and crunchy skin pumpkin went well. I didn't expect there to be rice included since that was not mentioned on the menu. That was a big plus. The chicken and rice dish was also better than what I was expecting. I'm a big fan of hainan chicken rice and this was both similar but very different. The chicken was the same style and soft. The nice crunchiness of the bits of garlic and cucumber gave some refreshing taste of the stronger taste of ginger. The rice also had a garlic ginger taste to it too. Overall, I would put this spot as my favorite thai spot in DTLA area. The food was great and my gf also really liked it too. I will be ordering other things on the menu when I get a chance to try them out again.
I used to order once a month AND dream of the pad see ew at this place. And now I feel like the brand has got a little too big for its birches. I think the food has been holding up a bit but its service continues to be really over the top stuck up that I'm uncomfortable when I try to bring my friends to try it. There's been too many incidents and I don't think it's worth submitting my friends/fam to this. And I think the last draw was ordering delivery for the famous pad see ew only to get this stringy version that we absolutely disliked. Ps- note I forget the green curry here is super delicious but more watery than most.
I love a good eggroll, someone here said that these where their favorite. What kind of crack are you smoking? Hands down the sorries eggroll ive ever eaten. All you taste is the wrapping, and they are 10 dollars!! Truly criminal eggrolls to the point i felt compelled to make this review. The main dishes are decent but over priced for the portions.
Unacceptable $26.40 for not even 1/2 a teaspoon depth of curry sauce. Called the restaurant back and the woman's response was " it's not soup. You can contact owner or go to our web site. " What's the point of curry when there isn't enough sauce to put on rice. The issue isn't the portion of shrimp. The issue was the lack of sauce to put on the rice. Picture shows the depth of sauce with a plastic soon.
Today, I decided to go in person and order. I ordered 2 veggie fried rice and 1 pad Thai. I was charged $54 for those 3 orders. I knew the price was off but since I was treating a friend that came with me I didn't want to question the price in front of them. I even tipped an extra $2. I've ordered every 2-3 weeks recently and sometimes the same type of order via delivery and it isn't this much. It's always like $44...plus tip. I went home and put in the same order on Uber eats and lo and behold it came up to $44. I don't know why I was charged an extra $10. I think he assumed I wasn't a regular. Seems very dishonest. I'm very disappointed. Updated: with taxes it's supposed to be $48. As per Uber eats pickup.
Fantastic Thai spot with excellent service. Had the pad khee mao, calamari, green curry risotto, and chimichurri steak. Everything was delicious. Small venue so recommend a reservation. Would definitely come back again.

I ordered pad see ew and the thai tea. Both were delicious. The pad see ew I've never had a tastier version and I eat Thai all the time - the best. I was only going to eat half and save the rest but it was so delicious I could not stop. I noticed there is more flavor- there is more fresh garlic and white pepper and some kind of beans I've never seen before in the dish. The greens inside were cooked perfectly - crispy and flavorful. A good amount of protein from eggs and chicken. The Thai tea was the best too I only wish there was more lol. They bottle their own which you can get with oatly. I'm used to getting a larger glass at other restaurants. The seating is cute and indoor. You order the food at the window and they bring it to you. Will def be back for more! read more

Way overpriced for the amount you get - $5 upgrade for shrimp in pad sew ew and all it came with was three super tiny shrimp that might as well have been craw fish. Its. shame because the food is tasty but not worth any premium upgrades read more

Wow! I almost have no words for how deliciously authentic this restaurant is. If you've been on the search for the most delicious Tom Yum since you've visited Thailand then this is your spot! Bursting with flavor and just the right amount of spice, the food at Holy Basil is a journey for your tastebuds. Located in the heart of DTLA, near the fashion district, we were lucky to find street parking. Of course, even on Sunday we still had to pay for parking but don't let that stop you from going. Holy Basil is worth every penny! The staff were extremely friendly and offered suggestions, hence why we got the pork belly with the Pad Kee Mao and it did not disappoint. They also serve beer, natural wine, and sake if alcohol is your thing. May i also suggest the Thai Tea with Oat Milk, as it's supremely delicious! They have limited seating but we didn't have difficulty finding a table. The table settings are very similar to the night markets in Thailand with the plastic chairs and tablecloths. It's such a fun touch! We sat next to a window that gave a view into the kitchen and you can see them cooking with all the bright colorful ingredients and spices. Everything about this restaurant is curated so nicely that it will keep you coming back for more. We can't wait for our next visit to try more items. I seriously can't recommend this place enough; you have to check it out for yourself! read more
One of the best Thai food spots in all of LA! Seems like super authentic Thai street food with a bunch of options. Staff is super nice and friendly. They have seating in the food court area with bathrooms. It's a food hall so it can be a little busy and noisy at times. Ordered takeout a few weeks ago for me and my bf because I didn't want to walk all the way up to Sticky Rice and I had heard good things about Holy Basil. We got: * Panang curry - not what I expected but good beefy flavor with nice spice. came with free jasmine rice. * Jidori chicken wings - smaller than we expected but full of flavor * Pad kee mao noodles with crispy pork belly - also spicy but really delicious. I added on an egg and extra veg and I didn't notice much more veg than I would have expected in a typical order. * Steamed wontons - tasty but probably better at the shop Overall solid. But if I want more selection, I'll probably head up to Sticky Rice. read more

Service a little slow, food took a little too long to come out. The kitschy vibe only goes so far. Those plastic stool seats were very uncomfortable and not designed for the type of meals you go to meet with friends. It's more of an "eat and leave" place. Yet, the food and prices are meant for a nice sit down meal. a juxtaposition that didn't work. Also, they only gave us chopsticks. Thai food usually rated with a fork and spoon and only noodle soup eaten with chopsticks. The food was just alright. I've had far better tasting and more authentic food. It's a one and done place for me. Not sure what the hype was about. But just had to check it out. read more

My hubby & I have been ordered from Holy Basil for years. Since they first opened. Lately we get delivery about once a week or 3-4 times a month. I just like to support local businesses especially Thai restaurants since I'm Thai. Generally this place is good... But a couple of times I've been disappointed. Smaller than normal portions or some inconsistency with the food but I always thought they may have run out of something or too busy or maybe just pandemic troubles, so I had never complained before and still continued to support them. But this last time was super annoying. One of our orders was missing it's main component . We ordered 2 sets of Gai Yang( grilled chicken ) rice bowl combo that comes with a pork bun and a side. But one set was missing the Gai Yang and the rice (the main thing). So, My hubby called to let them know and figure out what we should do. The lady who picked up had a slightly annoying attitude on the phone and kept saying that she was the one who packed it and for sure she put everything in. My husband told her maybe that's so but we didn't get it. She kept repeating she packed it and started to sound like we were lying or something. Like we want free stuff!!! She told us to come get it. HELLO!!! If I have time to go pick it up, I wouldn't order for delivery. I'd get takeout! And....How do u know for sure that u put everything in the bag? You never make a mistake??? Or...maybe it dropped out of the delivery guys bag....or he might have taken it. It doesn't actually matter because for me...I just didn't get the food I paid for. I'm super hungry and I have no time to get out and pick something up....which is why I'm getting delivery..duh. And besides that we want this business to know about the problem so they can do something to prevent this happening again... Here, let me help you come up with some ideas... when you pack, make sure to close the bag so that nobody else can put their fingers or hands in to steal or mess with our food. Our food came in a big handled paper bag that had one piece of tape closing the bag..in the middle only. Two sides of the bag were wide open. If you are using tape so tape the end of each bag too, so the food will be sure to be safe in there. Oh! Since it was not our fault, you should be nice on the phone toward us. I would be more happy just you listen to what happened. And the solution to just get a refund from Postmates was also just not that helpful or caring! I understand Postmates probably takes too much money from restaurants but if we can't get delivery we won't be able to eat from this restaurant. I was so upset just the way she talked on the phone. Otherwise, I would let it go and not write a complaint like this. I never want to give a bad review if it was tolerable. Even though I complain, I still give them 3 stars. How nice am I? Ok! Well... Let's talk about the food! Grilled chicken from many times I ordered tasted good. It was my fav dish here.. Good marinade but it's kinda oily a little bit. (One time I got a very small portion....like I only got the chicken soul it was so little...less meat more bone.. but that time I didn't complain. I should have. ) Rice berry is cooked well and is really good and much healthier than white rice. It's cool that they feature this with their dishes. BBQ pork bun was not impressive. Bun texture wasn't that soft .. seems not so fresh.. it has a texture like when you reheat some bread.... Some parts were hard and rubbery. Wood ear mushroom was not light. It had a lot of sauce, not my favorite..light on sauce would be preferable to me.. . The mushroom was crunchy though. Green Curry from many times before was good...pretty creamy. Spicy eggplant Gra-POW was not bad! Eggplant cooked right!..good softness. Not too soft or too hard like many other place. Beef Gra-pow was also awesome. The fried egg on top puts it over the top good. Garlic Chili Basil with crispy pork Moo Krob was tasty here. Crispy...heart attack deliciousness. This is kind of their specialty. Food here is generally authentic"Thai" spicy but can be ordered mild if sensitive. read more

The service is absolutely wonderful. The portions are large and the food is fresh, and came quick. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because of the area. It's a big grimy and unsafe. The second reason is that the pork belly was more like pork fat or pork grinds which is not really for me. Next time I go I will go with a different protein but this place is def worth a try! read more

Today I'll be feauturing @holybasil_dtla a Pandemic born restaurant that has taken up habitat in Downtown LA. With no sit down options at the moment, online orders or window orders are available, don't let their packaged food discourage you from dining here as their food is PACKED with intense flavor. I promise you will not be disappointed with this Thai food packing some serious heat to the table . So hows their food? Pad Kee Mao w/ Moo Krub (crispy pork belly) $15: Crispy pork belly, wok-fired smoke flat noodle, egg, bird's eye chili, pepper, Thai basil, garlic, scallions and XO sauce. Lets just start by acknowledging how the heat from the spices hit and has a slow creeping build up. The noodles are super chewy with an extremely present egginess, and that xo sauce has an intense salty, sweetness and aromatic scent. The crispy pork belly drenched in sauce became a bit soggy but packed an extreme flavor profile and had a bit of smokiness. This is probably the best darn pad kee mao i've ever had the pleasure of consuming. Moo krob $8: Sun-Dried then Deep Fried Churchy Fluffy Pork Belly served Holy Sauce. My family and I are no strangers to pork belly, in our career of being foodies we've consumed pork belly from many nations and many different styles of preparation. However, I can't say that I've ever had it sun-dried then deep fried, this is a first for me. Right off the bat the skin breaks like a delicate chip offering the crunchiest skin I've ever had, BUT get this the puffy looking ones popped like rice Krispies ya'll, a texture I've never had on pork belly. The pork meat itself is tender, juicy, and glistening with fatty goodness. Excuse my orgasm munching on the pork belly on video Overall, Holy Basil is forking delicious, you'd be a fool to pass up Holy Basil on Thai food Thursday! Don't go, food isn't fresh over salty and in my case they brought my friend's food first then we waited another 25 minutes to get mine once she brought it it was the wrong dish (I didn't say anything I was hungry) then the waitress comes back again tells me I got the wrong order, after I had bite on it took my plate and we waited another 15 minutes she brought the correct one but took the shrimps from my (wrong eaten first plate) and threw them on my correct new plate!!! read more

Really small restaurant limited seating. Food is mediocre I tried this place from online recommendations. It's just okay the grandma fish and rice rice is just okay do not have your hopes up. I love Thai food so I always like to try out different restaurants when I get a chance. So I'm looking at their confusing menu board and notice many of the items with taped off prices. I had to keep asking the cashier 'well how much is this?' and 'what size is this meal'. I didn't want to order a dish that was $20 or more, I ended up ordering the Pad Thai Goong for $15. When I received my bowl and showed my girls they were wondering that's all for $15?? The bowl was basically half full with three big shrimp and few bits of tofu. The noodles were flavored well but a bit salty on some parts. I feel the bowl could've had more noodles added for the price I paid. read more

Honestly, I had pretty high expectations with the price and how great the food looked. 1. They messed up on my order. For my pad Thai, I added the chilli flakes on top, bean sprouts on top, and the bean sprouts on top. Instead, I just had the normal pad Thai arrangement.. 2. Some of the noodles weren't even fully cooked. They had the same texture as the fresh rice stick noodles that haven't been cooked yet. 3. They really skimped on the sauce and seasoning for the pad Thai. I could barely taste the classic sweet and sour taste of pad Thai. It was as if I was eating a few spices and oil. If I'm paying almost double the price for pad Thai, I expect more attention to detail. On the other hand, the green curry was great. The right amount of spiciness, basil, and other spices. I love both green curry and pad Thai, so I was really disappointed with the huge difference in quality between the two dishes. read more

Very disappointing experience with this place. I remember the first time I had it when they were just opening, I found it to be enjoyable but also not amazing for the price. I remember thinking the pad see ew and Tom Yum Goong we're my favorite dishes. So today I decided to order delivery and order those two dishes in addition to the wings. Everything was extremely disappointing except the Tom Yum Goong. The pad see ew was pretty inedible. It was extremely burnt, small portion, and the shrimp were mushy. I honestly couldn't even tell if there were any noodles there. The wings were better but nothing worth the price and not flavored in a way I would ever crave them again. With so many good Thai places in LA this is just honestly not worth it. You can get way better quality food at a fraction of the price from like a dozen other places within a 3 mile radius of this one. I wanted to think of it as an off day but given my original experience maybe they just aren't that great. I just would expect more for this price range, in comparison to other Thai places in the area. read more
It was my first time here. I asked the lady if green curry comes with rice, she said yes and asked me to choose between jasmine and purple rice. After I got my receipt, I noticed the rice is extra charge of $3 and credit card fee is $1.05 which I was not aware of before ordering. The food is very good though. I got their green curry, rice, and drunken noodles with minced wagyu-medium spicy. It tasted very authentic. The minus one star is due to street parking is hard to find and a bit pricy. read more

Got the black tiger shrimp ceviche from the Holy Basil stall at the Smorgasburg market, and man the raw shrimp was so slimy and gross, and to top it off, it was way too spicy. It cost about $16 dollars and we just threw the whole thing away. Do not get the ceviche here unless you want to risk food poisoning. I wish I read the previous reviews on the ceviche here because the ceviche is supposed to be cured and cooked in the juices, but it definitely did not seem like the ceviche was made correctly. read more

Hands down, this is best Thai food I've had in LA so far. Came here to the DTLA to try this Thai restaurant that was recommended to me by a local. The restaurant is located inside a food court next to a Pizza Hut. There is few tables outside there and you order all your food from the cashier. I was very happy with everything I ordered to be honest. Their chicken wings were spicy and delicious. Their drunken noodles were great as well but we really blew me off was their shrimp curry. It was really really good. I only wished it had more sauce. I will definitely come here again and try their other dishes read more
