Came for a weekday group lunch. When we sat down they only offered us the regular menu. We had to ask for the lunch menu. SMH. The regular menu is quite expensive with the cheapest at $17 for appetizer and salad options and most expensive at a whooping $80. The lunch menu was more affordable but still on the pricey side $21-$32 with add on options. The waitress was taking our orders and what surprised me was with my co-worker ordered the pad see ew and the waitress asked her how spicy she wants it. I was aw shocked. I'm not a Thai food expert but I do know pad see ew is a noodles dish that's offers a sweet soy sauce flavor. Never served spicy. I didn't get to try the dish but when I asked my co worker how it taste she said it was spicy and not sweet at all. I'm not sure that was an authentic pad see ew. I ordered from the lunch menu and got the tumeric chicken, with steamed vegetables and paid extra $7 to substitute for a papaya salad. I asked for #2 spice level but it was not spicy at all. Other co workers said they asked for medium but it was way too spicy. So it looks like their spicy levels are inconsistent. I came here because I was seriously craving some mango sticky rice and this was nearby and still open. The rice was piping hot and the mangos were sweet and soft, drizzled with a generous serving of sweet coconut milk. Personally, the rice was a bit too soft for me and the coconut milk was a tad too sweet, but it still scratched the itch I had for mango sticky rice. I went close to closing so the staff could only offer me takeout, which was fine. They were friendly both over the phone and in-person when I picked up my order. Wow! I was impressed with this restaurant. After a visit to chinatown, my family and I were all craving some Thai food. White elephant was over at downtown, pretty close to where we were so we chose this place since the reviews are pretty good. Prices are also fair. $24 for the classic plates. We order the basil thai wings for the appetizer, pad Thai, pad see ew, drunken noodles, and yellow curry, all with chicken. Our favorite was the pad see ew. We liked the grilled taste for the chicken along with the savory and sweetness of the dish. The curry lacked a bit of flavor and could've used a bit more carrots. But portion size was good. For the 4 in our group, we finished everything. Each plate ranged from $24 to $32. Total for the 4 dishes and an appetizer came out to $170 with the 18% service fee that is included with the bill. Wanted some Thai food and since I live downtown, I figured it was finally time to give White Elephant a go. Even though I came here so I wouldn't eat fried chicken, guess what I ordered? DING DING DING, I ordered the Whitel Fried Chicken. The Description was Thai seasoning blend, cauliflower puree, and tangy sriracha butter sauce. Once placed in front of me, the portion was way bigger than I ever anticipated. The chicken itself was large and extremely juicy, while the breading had a lot of flavour as well. The salad and noodles on the side were solid as well, but who cares about those, the chicken was the only thing I actually cared about. Overall, I enjoyed the food at White Elephant but I will say, this place is on the pricey side and for some reason also feels the need to charge you for a tip on a party of two people. Here's the thing, you literally pick the wages for people and the prices of the food, so deciding to also pick the tip amount without giving the customer the option is both grimey and a bad business practice, minus one star for it. My girlfriend and I decided to dine here since we were in the mood for Thai food. I've seen great reviews about this restaurant and I wanted to see if the hype was real. Parking is limited but, you can pay to park in a structure across the street. The ambiance had a modern touch and the restaurant is really clean. Our waitress served our water while we explored the menu. My first thought was it's a little pricey but, I don't mind if the food and service are exceptional. I ordered the Orange Chicken and you can choose your choice of salad and choice of carbs. I chose the Arugula Bae salad with Jasmine steamed rice. The chicken I was lightly battered and super fresh. The flavor was great and the salad was extremely tasty. The dressing was my favorite part. My girlfriend ordered the Steak with Rice noodles and the Arugula Bae salad. We both agreed the salad was a 10/10. She liked the steak but, it wasn't her favorite item. We also ordered two Thai teas and they serve it a little different. They froth the cream and it's not overly sweet which we both loved. My ONLY issue aside from the prices is they add gratuity regardless of whether or not you want to leave a tip and it was only 2 of us. The pad Thai was really tasty but the Chinese broccoli was definitely my favorite! While we were a bit hesitant seeing that there weren't many customers, we still decided to give them a chance. Since we were in a hurry, we ordered the Tom Kha soup with chicken and the Pad Thai with pork belly. The soup was outstanding, bursting with every flavor you'd expect from a traditional Tom Kha soup. And the Pad Thai was quite good, though I'd prefer a different protein next time. About 2 weeks later, we decided to come back. On this visit, we ordered the Tom Kha soup again (because it was SO good the last time), Enoki Mushroom Crisps, Papaya Salad with Tiger Prawns and Pad See Ew with chicken. Once again, the soup was incredible. I could eat that every day. And the Enoki Crisps was also quite special with a spicy mayo for dipping. The Papaya Salad was everything you'd hope for, a little sweet, a little sour, a little spicy, a little funky, and those prawns were cooked to perfection. Rounding out the meal was their Pad See Ew, which had a fantastic char flavor and just enough sauce to lightly cling to the noodles. The food and service were extraordinary. I was in LA for a comedy show and I totally forgot about it for a moment. It felt like I was just there to enjoy this delicious meal. As far as Thai food goes, they're IMO the best in DTLA, and I hope they maintain the high level of cleanliness and tidiness there since a lot of places seem to be slipping in quality lately. I have eaten here once and ordered take-out a couple of times, and the taste and texture have always been the same as long as it hasn't been left over for several days. There are two dishes that I enjoy the most: spicy basil fried rice and the pad see ew with chicken. We decided to try some of the most hyped items from social media: the fried mushrooms, wings, crudo, drunken noodles, and papaya salad, along with their Thai tea and green tea. Food Ratings & Breakdown: Drunken Noodles (4/5) I opted for steak as my protein, and it was cooked perfectly, tender, well-seasoned, and flavorful. We shared the basil puffy tofu (I really enjoyed what tasted like miso tofu cream as a base), and I got the Drunken Noodles with chicken (level 2 spice - just perfect for my non-spicy palate) and my friend ordered the pork belly Pad Thai (level 0 for her) with a side of soda (OMG, we were both so excited that they served nugget ice). A really cute little Thai restaurant nestled in a little plaza in downtown! We had a friend visiting from out of town and decided to try this spot after another friend mentioned seeing someone online recommend this place! The interior is really cute and modern! It's very bright and airy and there was a lot of lovely natural lighting during the day time. As a heads up, there is no bathroom inside the restaurant and you will have to walk across and up the stairs. The security guard will ask for a receipt or ask where you're dining. Truthfully, the bathroom was a little scary! LOL! Parking can be a challenge so you may have to drive around for parking or settle for one of those lots with the flat rates. We found a place a block over for $10/day. It can be a little sketchy at times so always be mindful! I ordered the hibiscus sunset which was pretty refreshing and had a nice amount of sweetness. I didn't taste too much tequila so it's perfect for those who don't prefer boozier drinks. I also tried some of my partner's ube coffee but found it was a little too sweet for my personal preference. Amongst five people, we decided to split three entrees and share. We ordered the pad thai, coconut fried chicken with papaya salad, and the panang curry. I found the curry and pad thai to be very flavorful with a good amount of heat. The papaya salad was very light and had a good crunchy texture. I thought the coconut fried chicken was good but I think I would have liked a more distinct coconut flavor. I thought the dishes were pretty solid and wouldn't mind coming back to try their other entrees. Service was quick, efficient, and our waters were refilled promptly. It was great lunch with good portions that didn't make me feel overly stuffed. I do think it is more of a splurge type of restaurant so please keep that in mind as the prices will be higher than what you'd normally expect to pay at other thai restaurants! We stopped by after skating at the holiday rink at the Pershing square. We were happy and cold and craved some Thai. This place looks very nice and has a great vibe - well lit, stylish and spacious. The crowd was super eclectic. The service was attentive and fast, and the menu is concise with no frills. We had yellow basil fried rice and drunken noodles, and we liked the first dish better - more deep and flavorful. A friend had white fried rice with steak, which was pretty decent as well. We did not go for any drinks or desserts as the main dishes were quite filling (and a bit pricey given the added tag for DTLA location). Overall, it was quite tasty and pleasant. For more authentic Thai experience (with more things to try), I'd go further into SGV, but this was a great end to our night. read more

This is a hidden gem of a place in DTLA! Parking can be a bit tricky but there's lots of paid lots for under $10/12 you can park at! We ordered several appetizers and each a main dish and also tried their cocktails. If you don't drink they have a lot of mocktails as well which I loved! The sparkling pink milk was my favorite. The location was interesting as it was in sort of a food hall and you wouldn't be able to see it from the street. The place is much more upscale looking than initially expected and not too busy on a Friday night. Restrooms were shared with the other stores and restaurants and a bit confusing. I ordered the yellow curry which was pretty good though I wish the vegetables had been cut a little smaller. Also, I was originally trying to order another dish on the menu but was told it wasn't available yet which is confusing because they already put it on the menu... I came here for a quick Monday lunch and the service was in fact quick. It took under 20 minutes from placing my order for the food to be in my hand. I ordered the shrimp pad Thai which was good, more on the standard pad Thai flavor that I've had across the country. The do use medium sized shrimps and it was at least 6 in the dish. I forgot to say no peanuts but none were included anyways. The rice noodles did stick together quickly by the time i walked back home and opened my box. I paid about $19 for this dish before tax. The Enoki crisp were disappointing which sucks because it is a big portion. They were too oily, more than enough batter and some parts were too crispy to really taste the mushrooms. I think these require way less batter as they are already very thing mushrooms so too much batter and oil really overpower the delicate mushroom. I think they should reconsider how they make these and they could become more enjoyable dish. I paid about $18 for those i believe and not worth it at all. read more

This is one of the places everyone loves. I have been to undeniably amazing Thai restaurants. So I was curious when I saw White Elephant's amazing reviews. Anyway I went here a while ago so I don't remember exactly what I ordered but I clearly remember two dishes, Wings and Pad Tai. The wings were good but super heavy. I love bold flavors but they were way too sugary and sodium-loaded. The Pad Tai was overcooked and very watery. We couldn't even eat it. I do wish all the restaurants to do well and I don't want to hurt any business because of my negative reviews. I am aware that restaurants business is tough. BUT when owners charge 15-18% of healthcare cost to customers and serve not-so-great-food, I get frustrated. And this restaurant is on the expensive side to begin with. Why customers are responsible to support their business rather than buying their food? Yes I know I can decline the fee but since the charge is there, I feel like I have to participate. I tip 18-20% when I dine but restaurant wages are not minimum like they used to be. We tipped well for our server because he had nothing to do with the food quality. The Thai food here is absolutely delicious. I could drink their panag curry. Came here with a friend for lunch and we were both very impressed. I think the enoki mushroom crisps are good but very heavy and not ideal for two people but good for a large group. I would pass on the chawanmushi because it's oily and not like the Japanese version. The appetizers are HUGE in portions and a great value. Everything was very tasty and you can order level of spiciness. Toilets: no toilets inside restaurant, have to use mall bathrooms across the way and upstairs (security guard posted in front of bathroom entry door). I was on a hunt for whole fish. Can't believe how hard it is to find in Los Angeles. I was super excited when I stumbled upon this restaurant. I ordered the Branzino. Though it was cooked well, it lacked flavor on its own. The accompanying sauce was tasty and went well paired with a side of rice. I've been to this location twice now. The first time was during lunch and the second time was dinner. This is such a cute restaurant, small but felt spacious. The servers are friendly and attentive. I thought the food was decent, nothing spectacular. For the price, I wasn't disappointed. My friend and I wanted to try the mango sticky rice and despite it being on the menu, they informed us it was sold out. For lunch? Really? Fast forward for dinner. There was 5 of us and we opted to sit outside to enjoy the cooler weather. The place was not busy, but we had to flag our server for water and to place our food order. The food is aesthetically pleasing! So artistic! For dinner, we ordered the puff tofu, the chicken wings and the crispy mushrooms. Delish!! All these dishes were fabulous! The entrees though, not so much. The crispy branzino was alright and the sea bass was a bit bland. The fried rice and crying tiger steak was decent and couldn't complain about it much. I didn't have a table knife to cut the steak with but luckily it was tender enough to cut with a spoon. When it came time to order dessert, guess what??? They were out of mangoes! Really??!!??!! Okay I'm so glad this place made adjustments to their menu! There's really no local spot for Thai stir fried noodles so I'm glad they placed that in their menu! I got the egg rolls which were a mushy veggie filling I personally wouldn't get them again The papaya salad for level 5 could have been spicier but hey papaya salad in DTLA? I'll take it!! :D Loved their drunken noodles aka Pad Ke Mao. The spicy level at 5 was pretty spicy and flavorful had a good kick. Def also try their hibiscus sparkling house drink if you haven't! It's very different and unique (: Ambiance is also nice for a first date or what not it's really cute and modern. Price was a bit steep, but they do give a good hearty amount that can easily equal 2-3 meals should you have a smaller tummy. Now $18 per plate anything below the portions they give now would be bad. But as of right now I think it's okay since I'm able to have leftovers. Staff was very prompt and friendly def check this spot out if you are local and is craving Thai food! read more

I really wanted to like White Elephant because it was in a super cute spot and I was looking for a good Thai place in DTLA, but I was very disappointed by the food. I came on a Sunday evening and was expecting to wait a little, but there was no wait and the restaurant was pretty empty. The restaurant itself is super cute and the the service was very prompt. I looked through the menu and decided on a few things. There is wine, beer and soju. I wanted to get a certain brand of soju, but they only had the flavored one so I opted out. The food was a little slow coming out but that was OK since my friend and I were catching up. For the food, I tried: 1. Drunken noodles - This was very bland. I ended up asking for soy sauce and the chicken was also kind of gamey. I would definitely not order this again. 2. Salmon belly tartare - I thought I would like this more, but salmon was super fishy and did not taste fresh. I actually ended up not eating most of it. 3. Puffy tofu - Probably my favorite of the night. The tofu was cooked perfectly, but sides that came with it, the papaya salad and rice was just not very good. Overall, very disappointed by the food. I had high hopes for this place, but think I will go elsewhere for Thai food in DTLA. read more

i'm not exaggerating one bit, this is HANDS DOWN the best Thai food we've ever had. my man and i have been together for 11 years, and we order the same 3 items at every Thai restaurant we try (which is quite a lot of restaurants after all this time). we have NEVER been so blown away by our pad see ew, tom kha, and mango sticky rice. no other restaurant could even compare. every item here was so beautifully presented, so packed with flavor, and so incredibly delicious. and omgggg the truffle fries?!? crispy on the outside, and so fluffy and pillowy on the inside?! incredible. every menu item was 20/10 amazing, and we can't wait to come back and bring all of our friends. also, the restaurant itself is gorgeous, and every single staff member is so sweet, friendly, and accommodating. we're obsessed with this place, and we're so happy to have found a new favorite restaurant :) read more
