This is THE go-to spot for Thai. I first had their fried rice when they had a stall at Infatuation a few years back and never forgot it since. I love strong flavors and good flavor profile combos in my dishes and Holy Basil serves exactly that. They're located in a gloomy looking food hall with other restaurants, which tbh I forgot what they were after seeing that Holy Basil was open. Service is nice and they bring the food to you after you order at the door. The whole ambiance of the hall is not as flashy as the popular parts of DTLA, but dw, Holy Basil's food does all the shining. read more

I got some takeout last night to feel more immersed while watching The White Lotus S3 and it did not disappoint. The pad kee mow was insanely delicious paired with their Thai style fried chicken. That pad kee mow had a very unique taste because they used wagyu minced beef instead of regular beef and the texture of the crust on the fried chicken had the crunch of a rice cracker. First time but won't be the last! Absolutely delicious and wish we could have eaten more but we were too full. We ordered the gra pow moo krona, holy wings, garlic vermicelli and the chicken and rice. All the dishes with the exception of the garlic vermicelli were outstanding. They were simple but extremely flavorful and cooked to perfection. It all tastes fresh, there was great variation in texture and the spices played well with each other giving hints of spice, sweet, tang and umami. We really enjoyed our meal and honestly couldn't stop talking about what enjoyable food experience it was Highly recommend. Sorry we didn't take pics- we were too busy eating. I have been to holy basil since they opened their door. True, it has been a min since my last visit until today, but the last time I went wasn't like what I experienced today. The decorations got better, they have table cloth for their tables and real plastic plates we're used instead of paper boxes. The issue I had though was there were plenty of people working in the kitchen, but not a single Thai person inside. That really should trigger me but I had faith. I ordered holy wings, pad see ew, and a Thai iced tea. Thai iced tea came in a can so whatever, but the wings got way smaller compared to what it used to be. I asked for medium spicy for my noods and it came out with ZERO spicy, not even a pepper insight. It was almost like eating teriyaki, just pure sweetness. The veggie was also bitter. I seriously didn't know what to say about this... Did they sell their business? It went from amazing to trash just like that. Sigh. Time to find a new spot. 9/7/24: Good to know the business is still under the same owner. I can understand the explanation for #1 and #2, but for #3, you might want to train your staff and let them know to inform the customer about it. Had been really looking forward to the Pad Thai here based on the reviews. I had asked for it spicy and the guy looked at me confused and sad he could put on top. I ate in to save on disposable items. I was brought my meal with a fork. The tofu was barely cooked and very soft. The sauce was sweet and lacked the depth and savory taste I am accustomed to. The spicy I requested wasa dash of red pepper. If you are in this area I would recommend going elsewhere. read more

I live in the building next door and have ordered here quite a lot over the last several years but today marks the last time I will order from here. Multiple customers waiting at the window for pickup orders and no employee comes to the window or keeps the train running. They are always 20 minutes or more later than they tell you to pick up your order. The prices have gone up while the portions have gone down and the wait is ridiculous. As convenient as it's been to come here, today is my last time. And now, after sitting outside the window, my food sat on the counter for 10 minutes!! They never called my name. I think this restaurant converted me into a Thai food lover. I don't think I've tried anything bad, and I've brought my dad and a bunch of close friends who've all felt the same. The DTLA location seems a bit sketchy outside, but the benches and wide open space inside are a cool, casual vibe and the service is great as well. The wagyu gra pow is my go-to, but the yellow curry rigatoni is randomly good. Other favorite dishes include the Angus beef fried rice, grandma's fish fry, pad see ew, and pad Thai. The aroma of tamarind and roasted peanuts hit me first, with a subtle hint of lime and chili in the background. The shrimp being my fave was the cherry on top. 2. Kaeng Kiew Wan / Jidori Chicken with Green Curry: Never seen my mom eat finish a dish so fast before. The creamy richness of the coconut milk was perfect with the herbal punch of green curry paste. I just wish they put more veggies! 3. Grandma's Fish and Rice: We had to order ANOTHER dish after finishing the others. Always loved trying dishes that taste like home. Unassuming and simple. The squeeze of lemon and splash of fish sauce made it taste more authentic. 4. Absolutely deserving of 5 stars and more! While the dining experience itself is a little untraditional being inside of a food hall with tiny tables and stools, it's 100% worth it. I'm a big Thai food eater, but Holy Basil goes above and beyond in flavor and authenticity. I went with a few friends and we ordered a variety of things to share and not a single thing disappointed. We ordered the spring rolls, wings, pad see ew, fried pork belly, and pad kee mao with shrimp. The shrimps were BIG and juicy. The pork was so crispy and tender. The pad kee mao was delightfully spicy and tickled my tongue in the best way. The wings were crunchy and so flavorful. All of the sauces were so complimentary to each dish. We parked in the perfect parking lot and walked to the food court. Our first stop was Broken Mouth then my boyfriend and I picked up Holy Basil for takeout dinner after we had Broken Mouth for a late lunch last Saturday evening. Hehe. We were being food greedy. The food court wasn't crowded since we got there at 4pm. Broken Mouth opens at 4pm. Holy Basil opens at 5pm. Holy Basil has alcoholic beverages such as sake that you can purchase for takeout. You have to order online, you go to the restaurant for pick up only. You can eat at the restaurant if you'd like. It's food court style seating. There are also tables and seats next to Holy Basil. My boyfriend and I ordered: - Pad kee mao (x2 by accident) we meant to order 1 order, regular spicy - Tom yum soup (x2 by accident) same, regular spicy - Holy Basil chicken wings (x1) I really enjoyed the food even though it was one day old. The Pad kee mao was seasoned tastefully. The regular spicy wasn't too spicy. The Tom yum soup had just the right sweet and sourness ratio. It was spicier than the Pad kee mao though. I popped the chicken wings in the air fryer and they were still tasty the next day. So if you're looking at the photos, they are one day old. ABSOLUTELY THE BEST!! I literally blurted this out while eating. The restaurant in located with this food court. It's hard to miss as it's the first restaurant you see when you walk in. They have a cute dining set up made of red plastic crates and chairs that resembles the outdoor seating in restaurants back in Asia. Really nice touch to the ambiance of the greater space of the food court. The food was AMAZING. I ordered the Gra Pow with pork belly and the Holy Chicken. The pork belly was so crispy and delicious and the dish also came with a side of rice. The Gra Paw was medium spicy and it was a good level. If you can't tolerate spicy I would order non spicy. The Holy Chicken was also delicious. It was crispy and saucy. I highly recommend! They also have wine if you or a group is celebrating or casually wanting to drink. They had orange wine. This woman-owned business was the best way to spend our lunch break. Our group shared too many items to count - we had skipped breakfast lol. But the pork belly was probably the crispiest thing I have ever eaten, and whatever that green sauce is was fantastic. The skinny egg rolls were a 10/10 as well!! For my main I had the Pad Se Ew with shrimp and it was so delicious. Seating wise there isn't a ton, but if you have the opportunity to sit down and eat it fresh I definitely recommend it. read more

This time, I was feeling more adventurous and it paid off. Holy Basil is phenomenal at bringing big flavors and fine techniques. Gra Pow with Moo Krob: Gra Pow is a stir-fry of meat and vegetables. And this dish is an absolute umami flavor bomb. First, you register the sweet and savory flavors from the soy sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, and garlic. The flavors are caramelized and everything is a bit sticky. Next, you notice the eponymous holy basil, which has licorice, sweet, and peppery notes. Finally, the heat from the "regular" scoop of bird's eye chillies is intense. You might want to stick with mild if you're not comfortable with spiciness. The luscious pork belly (moo krob) is both super crunchy and succulent. The diced long beans are also crispy and are great vehicles for the flavors. Flavors were top notch, very familiar sweet soy type that I've had in other dishes coupled with a good texture of crispy pork made this dish so delicious with rice. Which it comes with! Thank goodness. I love that the spice level is indicated on the receipt by spoon measures. Regular spice = "1 full tea spoon" perfect amount of heat. Pad See Ew using Vermicelli Noodle (16) - the usual pad see ew flavor on angel hair-like noodles was a great take on something very popular. I was surprised at the generous portions. I will pay 16 if I'm getting something sharable and this checked the mark! Note the credit card fee of 3% which they have signage for. I'd say eat your meal there. Santee Passage is a promising food hall with a few stalls that's worth a trek especially when you're already visiting the Fashion District. The creativity in constructing these dishes, or rather deconstructing the standard dishes, but with the most interesting combinations. I mean, not natto beans With the Kabocha and eggplant??? The subtle flavor of the natto was a pleasant surprise and really knocked me off my palette. I am in awe of what they did with the chicken and rice, easy to eat, clean flavors, and just so sophisticated. But it seems pretty good. Not much fanfare here as it's a quick grab-and-go spot with some shared tables out in front. Food comes out rather quickly and the prices are OK. Ordered the following: Gra Pow Moo Krob - 8/10: Pork belly with long beans. Best dish by far. Loved the crispiness of both the belly and long beans. Not too spicy at all. Very flavorful dish that goes well with white rice. Kang Kew Waan Kai (Green Curry) - 6/10: Came with chicken. Pieces were pretty large. I thought the soup was too watery, however. Just very average. Kai Yang (BBQ Chicken) - 6/10: Big pieces of tender chicken, but lacked flavor. They don't have a fountain machine for soda/soft drinks, so keep that in mind when you come here. Although they do have bottled sparkling and regular water. Too many Thai places around town to go to, so I'm not sure if I'd run back to this one. read more

Holy Basil was great. We got there at 8:25pm on Saturday and they let us dine in. Since they were so close to closing they were out of a lot of things but we got the pad kee mao with pork belly and pad see ew with wild shrimp (3 huge ones) and both were delicious. The pad kee mao definitely rivals Anajak Thai's. I would say they're tied and Holy Basil is way easier to get to (and probably to dine at overall). We will definitely be coming back when we're in DTLA earlier in the night to try their other dishes. read more

I came to Holy Basil on a Friday at about 6:45pm. There was one table available but it was pretty busy with take out orders and the 3 other tables were full. Maybe my experience would have been different if I'd gone during a less popular time. I ordered the crispy rice salad, moo krab (crispy pork belly), gra pow eggplant and pad see ew with beef. The total was $86 which included a 20% tip. I was looking to order the beef tataki but it was crossed off the menu and I also tried to order a Thai tea but they were out. The wait for the first dish was about 30 minutes. The salad was served last and took a significantly longer time than the eggplant and pad see ew. The employee apologized for the delay in the food being served. All the food was good, flavors were authentic. The moo krab and holy basil sauce were great. The eggplant was cooked well and wasn't soggy. The food was good and I would probably come back at a non-busy time. OMG! Get here! This food was amazing. We got the pad kee mao with wagyu and I can't recommend this place enough. There was a sweetness in the sauce I loved. The noodles gave a slow burn that was quite enjoyable but you can change your spice level to be higher or lower. The guy who saw us wandering around the food hall was great at directing us to a menu that eased my husband's ordering issues. I can't wait to go back! read more

The dishes themselves are very flavorful, but slightly small for a "share plate" kind of vibe and for me personally a little too salty. I would still recommend this place to anyone seeking out Thai in LA. Love how they re-purposed wine bottles for water, it added an extra touch of fun and mischief to an already fun atmosphere. My boyfriend and I recently ordered takeout from Holy Basil on UberEats, so I can't gauge the service or ambiance. The food, however, was super tasty. We ordered a pad kee mao with flat noodles, pad kra pao with crispy pork belly, and the curry rigatoni. Pad kee mao was perfectly seasoned -- it was well balanced (spicy, savory, and slightly sweet) and had a good ratio of noodles:tofu:veggies. The crispy pork belly was my personal favorite. Despite our food being delivered and steaming in a tupperware for ~30ish minutes while our delivery was en route to us, the pork belly was still perfectly crispy. This is one of the few places where the spice level was actually as we requested: the medium had some kick to it. I do wish they gave a little more pork belly, but that's just wishful thinking lol. The curry rigatoni was just alright, in my opinion. It might be different for in-person service, but we recevied a scant portion that had maybe 7 rigatoni noodles max in our container. Sauce was fine, and the noodles were also a little overcooked for my liking (not al dente). Interesting concept but could've been executed better.
