I'm definitely late to the HomeState tacos' game, but I finally made it! These tacos really do taste and feel like the tacos I've had in Austin area before! The star of the show is their fresh, soft flour tortillas. I love a good breakfast taco, so I went with the Neches (eggs, refried pinto beans, and cheddar) and the Blanco (egg whites, mushrooms, and Monterey Jack). Both were delicious! My husband was hungry and somehow ended up ordering FIVE tacos! He did pretty well, though, and managed to eat four of them. His favorites were definitely the ones with the refried pinto beans. We also shared the chips and guacamole with our friends, along with an order of the Loaded Queso. And don't skip the brisket quesadilla! The only downside is that there are literally only four parking spots out front. But if you circle around the area, you should be able to find some street parking. There's also an outdoor patio, and water, utensils, and napkins are all self-serve. Service was great, one of the employees even stopped by at the end of our meal to offer us complimentary iced tea to go. We had a great meal here and will definitely be visiting the newer location closer to home soon. read more

Was looking for a brunch spot in the area and finally got the chance to try Homestate, a Tex-Mex chain that's been on my list to try for a while! They have an indoor dining area as well as a spacious covered patio. I also loved that their drinks are served in mason jars! Water, utensils, and napkins are self-serve. The service was excellent, and one of the managers (?) even stopped by at the end of our meal to offer us complimentary to-go drinks, which was so thoughtful! Their menu has a great variety of both breakfast and regular tacos, and you can choose between flour or corn tortillas - both types of tortillas tasted so yummy and freshly made. Quick order in a fairly short line. The guy behind the counter who took our order was very friendly and accommodating, especially as I asked if I could order my Migas with no onions (no problem-yay!). My husband got 2 tacos, brisket and chicken and a side of chips. I through in a side of crispy potatoes. This was a nice cool Sunday evening around 6pm, the vibe was full-ish but still places to sit. There's a big bar around the cook area inside where you order or a covered patio outside area (with heating if necessary). We had a lovely evening, so we sat at the end of a bench. Our food came to our table I'd say within 10-15 minutes of ordering. I honestly could have shared mine. It was a lot with those potatoes, and even my husband who's a thin guy said one of those tacos would have been sufficient (and he could have helped me with mine...haha). Homestate has been on my list for a long time and as a long time enjoyer and lover of breakfast tacos, I was really looking forward to it! There are lots of flavors to enjoy and it was hit or miss--some of the tacos were outstanding and others fell flat. The potatoes were dry and not sure if we got the end of a batch. The tacos also got cold very quickly--perhaps they are optimized for to go orders and reheating later. My sense is that homestate has a lot of potential and some great ideas but is still working out the kinks. The seating was ample and the vibes inside were nice! read more

Great spot for a last minute gathering with friends. Sat at the large patio tables. It was very comfortable with excellent casual ambiance and energy. Everyone LOVED their food! We had 8 people and everything from the breakfast tacos, to the street tacos, chips/guac (Guac was very yummy), crispy potatoes, chips/loaded queso, it was all gobbled up! The iced summer tea was refreshing on a hot day. I loved the Tijuana Panther taco with brisket and red salsa as well as the Chicano Batman taco with soyrizo and added sour cream plus their green salsa which had a little heat. Perfection. Homestate I love you but PLEASE bring back the old sauce (squeeze) bottles. These glass ones are awful. When you try to get the salsa out, only liquid pours onto the tacos and you don't actually get any of the salsa goodness until you wack the bottle SO hard and then it comes FLOODING out. I ate my tacos sans salsa because I couldn't even get it to come out of the bottle. What a bummer because their salsa is delicious! I got my usual brisket breakfast taco and it was just sopping wet. I don't recall it ever coming out that juicy. It was delicious, but super soggy. I also ordered my tacos on the corn tortillas which were good, but their flour tortillas are definitely the star. As promised, I went back after a couple of years. HomeState didn't get any better. I had a chicken salad and a side of flour tortillas. The ranch for the salad was extremely bland and watery. It tasted like a nondescript white dressing. The salad needed a good, tangy ranch. The chicken... just protein. And who doesn't love a good, homemade flour tortilla? We've all had them at Sonoratown and Casablanca... who doesn't want to eat like 10? The flour tortillas here are seriously like cardboard. I had to spit mine out. Who makes tortillas like this? Incredible breakfast tacos and Migas! I live far away in NorCal but every opportunity I get to visit LA, if I'm anywhere near a HomeState I will happily get my breakfast taco fix. This was my first visit to this location. There was only one person ahead of me when I lined up to order around 9:50 am on a Monday. Loved the chill vibe of the outdoor seating area, which was quieter than inside where there were a few tables. Service was friendly, and they bring your food out to you after you order at the counter. I ordered the Lonestar Migas (5/5) that was packed with brisket, cheddar, and pico de gallo. It's delicious and pretty filling on its own! For breakfast tacos, I got the Don't Mess With Texas (5/5) which is a MUST try. A perfect breakfast taco! I also got the Guadalupe (4/5) which was good but I realized I'm less of a chorizo fan and prefer the brisket or bacon I had with my other menu items. The outdoor area is also dog friendly! I fully enjoyed having breakfast here and getting to see a few sweet, well behaved dogs was a bonus. I wish we could get a HomeState in the SF Bay Area! First timer here! Gotta say, for TexMex it's pretty frickin delicious! Prices are not too bad because we're in Sherman oaks. The star of the show is definitely the Brisket Taco. Portions are generous with the meat. Love the Glass Mason jar. Ambience is wonderful not too loud. It is a busy place though, but they get the food out quickly as possible. The establishment is very clean. Would definitely recommend and definitely would love to come back. Only thing I wish they would change is that they would not wrap the tacos completely in tinfoil because it defeats the purpose of a crispy taco shell. I got three tacos on their house-made flour tortillas. I got chicken, brisket and Fort Worth (chicken with bacon and jalapeños). They come individually wrapped in foil. They were pretty generously filled! Beware the tortilla gets a little soggy and messy depending on the taco you get, so be prepared with napkins. I liked the brisket one the best by far. They offer open seating which was not at all crowded. The weather was great and it was just such a relaxing evening. The ordering process is pretty straightforward. Walk up to the counter, order your food, they give you a number and deliver when it is ready. On the subject of drinks, expect an awesome variety of interesting beverages. On the night that we went, they had two varieties of margaritas, one was spicy and so interesting. The staff was incredibly helpful and even offered us tastings to ensure that we didn't order something we wouldn't like. The menu is fairly simple. I always order the potato tacos, at five dollars you cannot beat it. They are absolutely delicious. I was turned off at first because of the price for their tacos not expecting them to be so much, however when our order arrived at our table I understood why. Their tacos are quiet large. One is almost enough for a whole meal. I tried the chicken and Picadillo tacos enjoyed them both. However, I'm not a fan of massive tacos like these. It almost felt a bit like a chore to eat just one due to their size. All of the ingredients were great and the tortilla suprisingly held up but it was definitely a bit of a mess. I also tried their Queso and Guac both of which were fantastic. I ordered a big queso cause I thought the lil might have been too small and boy was I wrong. A lil would've been enough. We ordered 7 tacos; one of each of the anytime tacos on their menu as well as one Tijuana panther and one Chicano Batman. We also ordered the loaded queso with soyrizo and the frito pie in a bag with brisket as they were running low on ground beef. Honestly ALL of their proteins were delicious even the chicken and soyrizo. We opted for flour tortillas and were pleasantly surprised with how generously they're served with meat and toppings. The queso had great flavor and the frito pie was so so good. They have red and green salsas both of which were yummy though neither were spicy at all. To drink we got margaritas on the rocks. A little sweet for me but boy are they potent lol they have both indoor and outdoor seating; the patio is more spacious and they have heaters. Yeah, well this is the closest I've come to that outside of my home state. (You see what I did there?) So proper respect to this homage to those greasy little bags. HomeState is a local staple at this point. The Trinity tacos are my absolute FAVORITE. The taco comes with Bacon, Egg and potatoes. They also bring two bottles, one red and one green, to top your taco with. Please spare yourself the Cholula, TRY THEIR HOMEMADE SALSA! It's not spicy but it adds PLENTY of flavor to everything. The service is always very quick and friendly. Their price-point is a bit above than average but they invest in their ingredients by providing pasteurized juices and Vital Farm pasture raised eggs. I recommend ordering 1-3 tacos. I typically got with 2 and a side of spuds with their tomatillo ranch and am absolutely STUFFED.. Please get the spuds, they're to die for. Especially with the queso.
