The quality of the food decreased dramatically. The guacamole that used to be plump and smooth, is now watery and melted looking, the beans also seem like a different texture. They give you more of the black beans, but you can tell they're not as good quality and the cheese on top of the beans used to be a tri-colored thick string cheese and now it's a thin white cheese that barely covers the top and the chicken portion decreased by half. Also the flour tortillas are more doughy than normal. This place used to be a go to for me because it was so fresh and clean, but I'm not sure anymore. I hope they shape up read more

I have to give a shout out to Jose at the Pasadena location. My friend and I asked if he can wipe our table down and with no hesitation he did and gave us wipes we forgot at home. A Tex-Mex taco spot right next to Altadena, this casual eatery is full of flavor and delicious homemade tortillas. The restaurant is modern, simple, industrial and has a plethora of tacos from breakfast to lunch/dinner. My husband and I came by for a quick lunch and ordered a few tacos to share along with a dip and drinks. My favorite was surprisingly the bean and cheese taco, simple but effective with charros refried pintos and flour tortilla. His favorite was the Neche: egg, bean, and cheese. Again the beans were the star of the show despite also trying out the brisket tacos, it seems everything here can be better with beans. The brisket tacos were fine, lots of meat and a bit of guac but overall it was a good bite. The soyrizo cheese dip was fire! And the drinks were just okay. I love coming to homestate bc the food always tastes amazing! My top 3 tacos are the Guadalupe, pecos, and the trinity! They don't skimp on the filling and the tortillas are homemade! They have 2 types of salsas for the table and other sauces like cholula and tapatio off to the side. I also love getting the chips and queso as a side. They also have homemade flour tortillas that you can buy. You can either sit indoors or outdoors (dogs are allowed on patio). HomeState is great neighborhood restaurant and it shows. Outdoor seating where you can bring the dogs, kids and significant others. We came for brunch but have also enjoyed their regular menu - you can't lose with either option. I ordered the Comal taco (eggs, black beans, jack cheese), Pecos taco (brisket, eggs) and the Guadalupe taco (chorizo, egg, cheddar) and could have kept going but didn't want to look like a glutton. I went to this place for the second time for lunch as it was recommended by others saying that the brisket tacos are the best. They were not lying, both times I have came to this place I have ordered the brisket tacos. The first time I ordered two brisket tacos, one with the flour tortilla and the second with the corn tortilla, both tasted good, they come with guacamole and cabbage and lots of shredded brisket. I also ordered the pinto beans with cheese. The second time I ordered three flour brisket, tacos, and I told them I wanted that with beans, I didn't specify the type of beans so I got stuck with the black beans with cheese. The first time I was able to pay cash and of course I left a tip since I was eating there and Happy that the place is open, most places are closed due to the Fires or the high winds tore off or damaged the roof. The second time I had to use my credit card and the only option is to leave a tip either 15% or 18% or 20%, so I chose 20%, when I paid with cash I actually left them a 25% tip, but the register that allowed to accept cash was being serviced. Anyway be prepared to use your credit card and leave a tip. Also when you order something make sure you are exact or someone else might decide to choose your options for you. This place has really great food and the staff is very friendly and nice and dressed professional. This place has mixed drinks. This place has indoor seating and outside seating with shade canopy, They also have their own parking lot and they have two parking stalls for handicap, so they more than likely share their parking with the business next door cause that parking lot has no handicap spaces. The parking is limited and both times I parked on the street around the corner. It is marked two hour parking limit. I highly recommend eating at this place. read more

Popped in for a late breakfast after a local hike. Checked the Yelps and saw the rave reviews for the tacos. Have to say, for $5 each they were comparable to the dollar tacos from the old school taco trucks before they became a bougie thing. They seemed mostly filler and teeny tiny. The stand out was the Migas! Basically a zhuzhed up version of chilaquiles. I would definitely come back for these. We had the Lonestar with shredded brisket for $12. The Pasadena location of Home State is located on the site of the now-gone "Lincoln" and it retains much of the vibe although the menu is completely different, concentrating on Mexican food(s). This review is for the tacos only, which are really creative and would be amazing if THEY DIDN'T ARRIVE COLD, wtf??? The fillings are generous, the tortillas are perfect, but the fillings are COLD, making them a real disappointment. They don't appear to be made to order either, another downer. If they were to correct this issue the tacos would be really, really good, but for now... They have a wide range of margaritas and a couple of beer choices, but the wines are weird and pretty mediocre; they should revisit this as well. Inside there are individual and communal tables and it can get a little boomy and loud; the patio has a nice vibe so I'd opt for that if the weather's cooperating. Service is attentive and friendly, but the tacos are served on a metal tray of sorts instead of a plate(s), another odd choice. I'd like to come back but not for those cold tacos, sadly. Today, I ordered my usual which is the Don't Mess with Texas and added eggs, but it usually just comes with bacon, refried beans, potatoes, and cheese, and their homemade salsas are sooo delicious. When I have tacos, I usually prefer corn but they have homemade flour tortillas that are so good so I always choose that option. For sides, I prefer chips & queso but we were feeling the loaded queso today (we chose the vegetarian option which is black beans but there's also brisket) and we ate it up! I was finally able to try HomeState after it's been on my list for the last couple of years. I came with a friend on a Sunday for lunch. I was very surprised to see a short line; usually when passing by this location on the weekend there's always a long line out the door and into the parking lot. Since it was our first time, it took us a while to browse through their menu. We ended up ordering tacos (Guadalupe - breakfast chorizo; Fort Worth - spicy chicken; Tijuana Panther - brisket + queso; Potato; and Chicken) and Loaded Queso with Brisket. Their tacos come with your choice of a corn tortilla or their homemade flour tortilla - we opted The tacos I ordered (potato & chicken) were good. The chicken was really good and didn't need any salsa added. The potato taco was a little more on the bland side. We shared the loaded queso dip, which also comes with chips, and it was super delicious! You definitely need to mix the cup since we realized that all the brisket was on the very bottom of the cup. Service here was good. Cashier service was average. You order and pay at the counter, grab your number and find a place to sit. You get your napkins, water cups, utensils, and salsa bottles yourself. A worker will bring you your food order, and from there the service was wonderful. The lady who checked on the guests kept coming around to check if we needed any water refills or anything. She even asked us if we wanted more chips for our dip! There's plenty of seating outside and some tables inside to enjoy your food. The bottled sauces aren't anything special and I found that it didn't add extra heat to my tacos or really add any extra flavor. The tacos are great on it's own. As for parking, there's a small parking lot in the front and additional parking can be found on the streets. I'll definitely be back here in the future. Portions are small and the guacamole tasted store bought and was not freshly made. Tacos are rolled into a small roll and ok only. On a practical level, basic upkeep is lacking. I have been here well over 100 times and have had to wipe my own table almost every visit. That is not a one-off issue, that is a pattern. This is not a food problem. It is a brand and leadership problem. There is still something worth saving here because the product is good.
