But you'll know you found the place when you see row of cars parked on the side of the building. Ambience: very rustic and dark. Cute date night venue that doesn't require fancy apparel. You're coming here to have good food and drinks. Eats: we ordered the broccoli, lamb banh mi, cheese sausage, jerk bacon, 1/2 lb brisket, with side of cornbread. We ordered all of this first and was hoping we wouldn't be as stuff to order wings later. But we were stuffed halfway through. Our fav was the brisket. It came with onions and pickles. I put the bbq sauce and hot sauce over it and some of the onions and it was perfect! The banh mi was missing something. But maybe because I'm Vietnamese I had high expectations. I'm not sure if it was the hype or the fact that the food didn't blow my mind but this was an expensive, underwhelming BBQ joint. Had I not paid $45 for a cucumber margarita, a brisket sandwich, and some beans, my sentiment may have been more positive. The brisket sandwich was good but it was not composed very well. It didn't bind together well on every bite. The baked beans were good, smoky, but not too flavorful. The wings themselves were nice and big but the flavor was missing a punch. The 'large' baked beans were maybe 12 oz of beans with some pickled onions on top. Weren't very flavorful and cost $10. Our table shared the wings. Hometown Barbecue opened in Allapattah in September of 2019. This is their second location. Described as New York's favorite barbecue, their first location opened in Brooklyn's Red Hook neighborhood in 2013. Hometown is the creation of Bill Durney, a self-taught pitmaster who was mentored by Wayne Mueller from Taylor, Texas. Durney was a bodyguard to the stars but the travel was negatively impacting his family life. Instead he turned to barbecue for a new career path. He took the traditional barbecue flavors of North Carolina to Texas to create what he calls Brooklyn-style with influences from Jewish and Korean food. The Red Hook location quickly gained a cult like following. The New Yorker wrote ""The meat falls apart on eating, as it should, and is both intensely peppery and slightly sweet. It's served on a butcher-paper-lined metal tray, with accoutrement in paper cups, but this is a meal which requires neither sauce nor niceties." Hometown has been called one of the best barbecue restaurants in the entire country. Located in the former Brother Produce warehouse space, the restaurant has an industrial feel in the open air warehouse. Lunch is counter service and dinner switches to a more formal atmosphere with wait staff. There is both indoor and outdoor seating. The Miami location has dishes inspired by the Dominican, Honduran, Nicaraguan and Cuban influences of Allapattah. The menu includes smoked meats by the half pound, ribs, Oaxacan chicken, smoked wings, sandwiches, tacos, specials, and sides. The have a bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. Dessert is banana pudding and an ice cream sundae. Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 PM. I came over to Hometown for lunch after a visit to the Rubell, a museum of contemporary art across the street. I loved the open feel of the restaurant. There is outdoor seating on both sides. As I was leaving a band was setting up. After consulting the menu I decided on the pastrami which is only served on the weekends ($18). I added on a small side of slaw $6 and a sweet tea ($3). I would have liked a cocktail but at $18 it was a little too rich for my blood. When my food was ready they brought it to my table. The pastrami was delicious. Thick slices of smoked brisket were sandwiched between rye and served with a half sour pickle. The slaw was the vinegar kind and I should have passed. I make a much better version. Really they should throw it in with an $18 sandwich. I have to concur with all of the people who have left reviews that have called them overpriced. So I finally decided to take a out a second mortgage on the house and hit Hometown BBQ up. I was pleasantly disappointed if that's an actual thing. The Beef Rib had none of the yummy bark you expect from a rib that style , was just a gelatinous mess. The chicken was great tho , both wings AND half chicken. Bacon was the star of the show by far. Had everything the overpriced beef rib lacked. Sides were lack luster coleslaw wayy too "mayonaisy" Overall if I came back, it'd be strictly for the sandwiches as that's all I could actually afford without having to whore myself out. We found this place by accident after attending an art exhibition nearby. This was the closest place for food so we took our chances without reading reviews. We were SO pleasantly surprised! The outside looks like it is to be avoided but this place is a pearl inside an oyster shell. Appropriate atmosphere, kitchen in full view (I love that when I am unsure about a place), our service was top notch (thanks Andre!) and the food was delicious. We tried brisket (fatty option), chicken, sausage, cornbread, and mac and cheese. ALL was delicious. FULL DISCLOSURE! I do not eat meat, so this place REALLY isn't my jam. That said, I do appreciate what they are doing here. Larry S. and I have a rental property close by so it's been on his radar to try for while. Last week, we needed to meet the painter at the property, so I dropped Larry off at Hometown to pick up lunch while I let the painter into the property. The weather was pleasant, so by the time I got back to pick him up, he had already consumed half of his brisket sandwich at one of their lovely outdoor tables. He ordered the yuca bowl for me, and I happily let him take the wheel so I could eat while we went on to our next appointment. Verdict on the yuca bowl: Meh. The slaw that the fried yuca bites were resting on was the highlight. Fresh and tangy, with small slices of habañero pepper hiding in the veg as a spicy surprise! I thought the yuca was very dry (although kudos, it wasn't greasy!). Larry reported that the interior was airy and spacious. There were garage doors that were open since the weather was good. Presumably, they would close in warmer weather to allow for a comfortable air conditioned experience. This set up is similar to many warehouse-style restaurants we enjoyed in Nashville a few years ago - not common here in Miami where we have space constraints, but it's a great idea if the space permits. He said they had on pleasant country music at a volume that allowed for easy conversation - as anyone knows from my previous reviews, music and its related volume are big components of my enjoyment of a restaurant! Larry loved the brisket sandwich. In fact, he ate the other half later in the day when we returned to the rental property to lock up after the painter. The painter was VERY intrigued by the sandwich and immediately headed over to Hometown to pick up dinner for himself! We ordered the Brisket, Pulled Pork, MAC & Cheese (my favorite), cold slaw, and corn bread. We ordered 1/2 pound of each of the meats and it was the perfect amount for 2. Update. This was our second time and I have to say you need to try the beef rib, wings , broccoli and save room for the banana dessert. So we heard of a new bbq place and after reading the reviews I know I had to take my husband. It is not in a part of town you would think about going during the evening, but definitely go! We order the 1/2 lb brisket and 1/2 lb of ribs, side of beans and mac n cheese. This was more than enough for two people. The brisket was flavorful and tender, the ribs were fall of the bone. I'm so happy that my family and I came to this restaurant. We came here on a Friday at around 6:30.. There was no waiting time.. we ordered and were seated immediately... This restaurant gives me Atlanta vibes.. there is outdoor seating on both sides of this restaurant. It's in the same plaza as the Wholesale Grocers.. the restaurant itself is an old warehouse that they turned into a hip restaurant... Ok so let's get down to the food... I ordered the Beef ribs, two chicken tacos, the Oaxacan Chicken, queso Mac and cheese and the coleslaw.. to drink I had the watermelon ginger limeade, my husband had an old fashion, my son the lemonade and my daughter the sweet tea... I have no complaints about the food or the drinks.. our food was great, it came out in perfect timing with great temperature... This place was very cool. It's in an old ware house and a fun place to go eat. They had live music on Sunday, as well as a lot of outdoor seating. Everyone was friendly. The best part was the meats. We tried the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket sandwich. Both we're really good and had a bunch of meat. The cole slaw was alright, but I wouldnt order again. The queso Mac n cheese was good, I might order again. The corn bread was also really good. BUT, the prices were high. Each sandwich was $15, each side (Mac n cheese and coleslaw) were both 10 EACH for a large, which I would not call a large at all. The single slice of cornbread was $5. It was $60 for a dinner for 2 and we shared sides. Overall, if you go, stick to the meats. The sides were good but not for the price. People had been raving about Hometown like crazy so I HAD to give it a try and let me tell you. THEY DID NOT DISAPPOINT! Everything was amazing. My margarita, the Frito pie, the Mac, the cornbread AND the pulled pork sandwich HIT THE SPOT! Everything was seasoned, *moist*, and flavorful. The pulled pork and cornbread were my favorites. I had never has pulled pork that good before. The Frito pie is what got me in the door, my bestie was raving over it. I liked it--didn't feel like anything was missing but wanted more. Hometown Bar-b-que is tucked away in a warehouse district in Allapatah so I would've have never found about it until friends from NY told me about the original location in Brooklyn. There is outdoor dining in front and in the back of the restaurant which is perfect during these times because I'm not ready for indoor dining just yet. Although, there is indoor dining and the tables seem to be spread apart responsibly. We got to try the brisket, chicken wings, chicken taco, pork spare ribs, mac & cheese, and the vegetarian yucca bowl. Unfortunately, some of the items we wanted to try were sold out, like the bacon and baby back ribs, but on the bright side, that just means we'll need to make another trip! However, when we are talking about barbecue and the subject of smoked food I wouldn't put it in my top 10. The food needs more flavor. A lot of the food seems like it's not brined or marinated thoroughly. The mac & cheese elbows were just a touch pass al dente so they still had a bite to it pasta should be a touch more clocked to meI think. Also, the mac & cheese was pretty soupy. The actual cheese sauce wasn't coated over the noodles. Barbecue is not an every day meal so when you're looking for barbecue, it's an occasion. This place won't satisfy your barbecue craving if you know good barbecue. Certain pieces had what appeared to be a good seasoned part but once you bite into it, it doesn't give any smoke, flavor, or that season sensation. The food was then delivered to our table with water. I personally don't eat meat but the rest of my group did. I had the Broccoli and corn bread for my lunch. Although it was delicious for $12 and $5 for the corn bread seemed expensive and not enough food so then I got the Yucca bowl for $10. I don't really care for flies in my restaurant either. It's also really hard to get service, you order, sit down and they bring to your table. From what I remember when I had visited before, the food was absolutely delicious, but I didn't recall the customer service, but I must say everyone who we came across was so amicable. We were greeted and told to sit where we wanted soon as we stepped in, our waiter came shortly with two waters in advance, took our order once we were ready and did warn us it was a lot of food we were ordering for two -- BUT whats better than not cooking dinner on a Friday night?! Not having to cook dinner on Saturday either!! We ordered the Beef Rib ($54), 1/2 Brisket ($20), Mac & Cheese ($11 Large portion), 6 smoked wings ($14), and one piece of cornbread ($7). For drinks, I ordered a Mezcal Grapefruit Cocktail ($15) and my partner had a Woodford on the rocks ($16).. The food including my cocktail was fabulous!! The only negative remark I'll make is for the wings, the dry rub way-too-smoky taste was not my favorite; nevertheless, this place is definitely worth a try or two :9 we also got a hat to support!! The place definitely looks cool -- it's a repurposed warehouse with dim lighting and a cute outdoor seating area in the back. The drinks were ok. My go-to cocktail is a margarita, so I was disappointed that our bartender did not salt the rim (what's a margarita without a salted rim?!). The food was good but not great. After 2 successful Uber eats deliveries, I had to go in person to give it a try. Here are all of the items I've tried so far: Oaxacan chicken (this was so good I had it for dinner two nights in a row), the brisket (so tender and juicy), yuca bowl (with pickled onions and cole slaw), potato salad (I don't even like potato salad and I loved it) and the elote (delicious chipotle Mayo on it). I didn't order a drink in person, but I did get one of their margaritas on Uber eats which was great. The service was so amazing and quick too. My server Perez was awesome, I felt like I was eating from someone's home. How can I put this? AMAZING! Absolutely everything I've tried in this place is FIRE! You don't need utensils to eat here. The meat of the brisket and the pork ribs can fall apart with just a shake of your hand. I've tried all their sides and every single one of them is delicious. Their cornbread is my fave and it's the best one I've tried in my life!! Crunchy on the outside but super fluffy inside. The place is like at an industrial location, but they have set up everything very nicely and have lots of outdoor seating.
