Very unfortunate change to Hon Sushi. We came here several times in the past ever since they opened, and this was our "will not disappoint" sushi place for us. Presentation and freshness of food was always on point and we left satisfied every time. The past 2 visits have been very disappointing, and we can definitely taste the difference. Sushi isn't as fresh and presentation is not as exciting. Everything just felt over priced and menu is a little misleading as some items without the hot/spicy chile marks would have serrano peppers slices on top. I've only been here for lunch. My service is usually great. Sometimes they take a while to prepare my sushi orders. I think it might be because they take a while to prepare the dish presentation. Although the dishes are beautiful, I would prefer if they didn't spend as much time during lunch since I'm always in a rush and I'm sure other lunch patrons are. The fish is very fresh. Possibly the freshest I can find around my office. I like that they don't use too much rice in their rolls. The udon was good. I went here at 9pm on Friday and Chef Charlie said that earlier, there was an hour wait since the place was so busy! I ordered the Omakase for $20 and 2 pcs of uni ($9). And oh my, they were all soft, succulent, and melt in your mouth good! You can taste the freshness of each sushi piece! 5/5! My girlfriend ordered the edamame, gyoza, and katsu. The edamame had garlic flakes on it, which added plenty of flavor! 5/5! The gyoza was crunchy on the outside and tasty on the inside! 5/5! The katsu and fried onions were delicious and crunchy, without tasting oily. 4/5! Chef Charlie is the man! He was very patient with answering my questions and catering to my girlfriend's food allergies! He even took my girlfriend's katsu and rolled it into a sushi for her so that she can have the "sushi" experience since she is allergic to seafood! Hon sushi is definitely at the top, the knife skills of Chef Charlie are sure to please any roll or sushi you order, and the freshness of the fish is sure to bring you back. Tucked away in an unassuming place you'll find Hon Sushi. Chef Charlie, the main sushi chef, has been a master sushi chef for 17 years, plus he's from Cali! I opted for the crunch salmon roll, which is a shrimp tempura roll topped with fresh Scottish salmon that is torched and topped with fried onions. If you're a salmon lover I recommend this roll! I also saw that they had fresh salmon belly and fresh escolar on the nigiri menu and opted for these selections. Chef Charlie recommended pairing the sushi with a side of ponzu sauce and man oh man, after I finished the first order, I placed another one of the salmon belly because it was sooooo good! My meal ended with some fresh fruit. Chef Charlie made a orange into a swan and even placed a google eye for added effect, it was very cute. Literally the only Japanese restaurant serving ramen and sushi at 11 am for a Sunday morning. I got here a little bit before opening hours but it looked like they were already open for business. I chose the ramen combo. The spicy miso ramen + California sushi combo. The California sushi was spot on (5/5), it was exactly what you are expecting from a California sushi, loved it. The spicy miso ramen is a whole different story. The noodles were perfect but the toppings and the flavor of the broth didn't really meet my expectations. I noticed the place was run by Koreans and Mexicans. The ramen didn't have the typical Japanese flavor I was looking forward to. It was more of a mix of Korean and Mexican. The toppings of the ramen definitely reflected that because it had corn, bellsprouts, and some other veges you normally would not see in a miso ramen. The combo was about $14 so definitely affordable for a lunch meal. But the flavors are not really authentic. Had a terrible stomach ache after my meal so I don't know if the place is as clean as it looks... Overall, I want to say (3/5) because even tho the ramen didn't meet my expectations.
