Quality has gone downhill. When I was there last, I ordered a ribeye medium-rare. It came out rare and was the most lifeless piece of meat I have ever seen. Came here this past weekend for Sunday brunch. The staff were great, extremely friendly and attentive. I don't really love buffets but was excited when my bf told me that it had an omelette station. Those made my entire meal -- very fresh ingredients and tasty. Great portion. Then I had a waffle. The fruit was extremely fresh at the buffet bar (watermelon, blackberries, strawberries, and cantaloupe). I was really impressed because fruit can be so hit-or-miss. While the food was good and service great, I wasn't blown away. Also, I don't think I will ever be able to eat for $30 worth of food alone. read more

Ruth Chris just has a little more flavor in pretty much all the dishes, and the sizzling butter is hard to match. But this a good steakhouse compared to every other place. Ok I have been to many good steak restaurants and this was just ok. Bar was nice but small,drinks good. Next our table was nice but our waiter was not friendly or fun and slow! The salad is a joke for a nice restaurant, iceberg lettuce that costs a few dollars that served a party of 10, give me a break! Everyone's main meal was good but again service was slow, major pet peeve for me! Now dessert I had the banana fosters cheesecake OMFG was it good! So overall we will not be returning unless it's for after dinner drinks and that dessert, thus 3 stars! We celebrated my mom's birthday here this past weekend, and it was our very first time eating at Hondo's. Service here was excellent! Our server Carmen was great and did a excellent job answering any questions that we had about the menu and wine list. My parents and I ordered rib-eye steak (I ordered the cowboy cut rib-eye steak, which has a bone in it) and my friend that came with us ordered salmon. All of us really liked what we ordered. All of our orders came with a salad. My friend and I got the Caesar salad, my mom got the house salad, and my dad got the hearts of iceberg salad. My friend and I had some reservations about the Caesar salad. We both felt that it tasted a bit spicy. It might have been the dressing that they used for it. For dessert, my mom got a free key lime pie since it was her birthday. She said that it was really good. I ordered a New York Style Cheesecake. I'm a HUGE cheesecake fan! Having a cheesecake at the end a meal is always delicious. The cheesecake that they served had a great presentation to it. It looked so good that its like I didn't want to eat it! The ambiance of Hondos was amazing. Great setup and all. Definitely a great place to go to celebrate a special occasion. I just wish the room was a bit brighter. It was kind of hard to see around the restaurant. I've been to the sister restaurants of Hondos: Schlesinger's at Newport News and Opus 9 at Williamsburg. I am stunned at how many times I have driven by this place and never stopped. Why its taken me this long is beyond my understanding. If you drive by this place and haven't been here yet its time to go! I came here for lunch on a random work day. Walking the place is clearly cut as an upper-end finer dinning steakhouse. Our group was the exact opposite of the decor in every way however, the staff never made us feel like we should of eaten at McDonalds instead. We got a great table outside to enjoy the weather. I ordered the Ultimate Burger. At first glance when it comes out it falls on the smaller or petite side. Do not like this smaller burger fool you! This burger is amazing! Every bite you get reminded that there are hints of Andouille Sausage mixed with the beef patty. The soft roll bun was good but not very memorable compared to the burger itself. You get your pick of toppings too; I had mine with bacon and cheese. Worth mentioning is that the fries are also killer (I haven't met too many fries I don't like). Great experience and rock solid food. I recommend signing up for their e-Club via their website to get chances at their coupons and promotions too! read more

Overpriced, underwhelmed! I decided to take my wife to Hondos for her birthday after receiving many great recommendations from friends. They all gave Honos high praise for its service and proclaimed it the best steakhouse in Richmond. Since the wife and I had not dined there before we decided to make a special night of it. The restaurant is beautiful and there was not a lot of people dinning there on this Monday night. Which made the slow inattentive service more pronounced. Though I informed them that it was my wife birthday when we arrive & when placing reservation no special attention was given to her, not even a happy birthday wish. The dishes were overpriced, flavorless, and the presentation uninspired. The waiter struggled with recommendations on the menu and in suggesting wine pairings. Then tried to tell me that the broccoli and cheese I received was indeed the broccoli au gratin. After explaining to him the difference between the two he still insisted it was correct. I ordered a 24 oz Porterhouse steak medium rare and received it prepared medium with an excess of fat remaining on steak. The Caesar salad with anchovies was prepared with thick slices laid over the salad instead for beating a few into dressing then tossing with greens. Extra sides that were ordered which were suppose to feed two were very small. Wife order extra shrimp with her Hondo special $15.00 for 5 or 6 small flavorless shrimp. Glasses of wine arrived after we had completed all but a few bites of our main course. The manager came by to ask how everything was before we even got our appetizers. All in all I would not recommend Hondos to anyone who values great food, attentive service and a upscale dinning experience. read more

This review is for their Sunday brunch only. As a broke grad student I can't afford to pay dinner prices ;) My boyfriend and I had reservations at noon and were promptly seated when we walked in. First thing I saw: lockers for I'm guessing really $$$$ customers/companies that go often enough to have the restaurant store their favorite wines. Haha, first time I've seen that anywhere. Anyway, the restaurant has a nice ambiance with the live piano going, white tablecloths, and a dining room resembling a nice sitting room in someone's grand mansion. Though it may seem way fancy/uppity, it actually wasn't that bad and I felt very comfortable dining there. Our server was very nice and attentive with bringing our drinks/plates/silverware and such. I kind of didn't like that I had to wait for her to come and give me a new plate before I could go forth and feast more but that was just the hunger in me acting out (I think). The food in itself was quite good for the price that you pay ($24.95) and there was a decent variety. Standouts were the Belgian waffle (I so wish I had the stomach to eat like 7 of them, seriously very delicious -- especially with their house made whipped cream and berry sauce), gnocchi (just soft enough with a nice creamy sauce), eggs benedict (perfectly cooked), prime rib, and the pulled pork (weird to be on a brunch menu??). The seafood newberg was also tasty but not much seafood in it. They had a fish dish that was not good, just overcooked and bland. Also the cakes just looked very standard, with the usual offerings like carrot/red velvet/chocolate.. didn't look too exciting so I didn't want to try. The chocolate fountain was a nice touch and was very popular with the kids (and me, hehe). I don't know if anyone would care but the bathroom was nice and clean and their napkins were so thick I thought they were made of cloth. I almost felt bad throwing it away. Overall it was a nice experience at Hondo's and I'd return for brunch again solely to eat $25 worth of waffles. Seriously, so good. read more

I'd heard a lot of good things about Hondo's from people over the past few years, and since i'm a steak lover, i decided it was about time I give this place a shot. Things Hondo's has going for it: - Friendly, fast service - Fairly nice ambiance Things Hondo's does not have going for it: - Excellent cuts of meat cooked to perfection I came with 2 friends, and we were all disappointed. I had the porterhouse medium rare. My friends ordered a rare strip, and a medium rare filet. The porterhouse was mostly strip - the tenderloin portion was non existent almost. The tenderloin that WAS there was not juice and full of flavor, it was more like a thin, crappy t-bone steak. The strip portion of the porterhouse, though medium rare, was very difficult to cut, and very much lacking in flavor. My friends basically felt the same way about their cuts of meat. I tried the filet, and was quite disappointed. I'd probably give Hondo's 2.5 stars, but our waitress was very friendly and gave us exceptional service. Thus, it gets 3. If the food was as stellar as our waitress, this place could be a top contender in the small steakhouse market of Richmond. read more

Hondo's is one of the few places in Richmond that wows me every time I go. The atmosphere is beautiful... perfect for a romantic dinner/nice evening out/upscale Sunday brunch. Think dark wood, nice table linen, and a suave bar with a giant buffalo head. (I could do without the buffalo head but that's just me...) First things first, prices: Ok, it's expensive. You've been forewarned. Service: Servers are always great, attentive, and personable. Food: Absolute delicious. I've had everything from their steaks, to the Madagascar shrimp appetizer (which I've almost ordered as an entree a second time because it was amazingly succulent), to desserts and brunch and nothing has ever left me disappointed. I've had two business dinners at Hondo's and give it a 3.4 stars. The ambiance/service is great and merits the opinion that it's one of the nicer steak houses in Richmond (as I've heard from a local). Overall, I think the food is pretty good, with some things here and there. Here's a partial list of things of what I tried there: Bourbon Pecan Brie: I loved this, and if I weren't with colleagues, I would have beast-moded it all of it by myself in 5 minutes flat. The bourbon pecan sauce is poured over a puff pastry, which is place atop of perfectly melted brie, accompanied with fresh raspberries, blackberries, and green apples. Hondo's Lemonade Martini: Delicious. Creamed Corn: Not bad, but could do without the layer of cheese on top of it. Calamari Frita: Wasn't a fan of the sauce. It's thick but the flavor is a little subtle. Boneless Ribeye: The cut is a little too thick..a thinner cut would have been preferable for a better seasoning:meat ratio. Frenched Australian Lamb Chop: This was near phenomenal...4 stars. You get three thick chops (menu says 6 oz each) and each are plump and succulent. It comes with wilted spanish which is perfectly seasoned. Now, the sauce it came with wasn't bad, but I dunno...my lamb chop preparation method of choice is seasoned (i.e. with garlic salt and pepper like my mama makes), and I guess it's just one of those things. But don't get me wrong, this dish was great. Overall, both of my experiences were very enjoyable and it's a great place to have date night and/or witty chit chat over drinks. read more

Hondo's has a nice, relatively new location. Fortunately or unfortunately it caters very well to the oh-so-boring corporate crowd. My guess is that 75% of all bills are picked up by a corporate AMEX. The steaks, however, are pretty darn good; as is the service. Don't expect much from the wines-by-the-glass list. Do expect to pay through the nose for very mediocre grape juice... I had a tolerable Cab Sauv that set me back $15 before tax / tip. Hondo's might be more than a steakhouse in a strip shopping center, but don't get me wrong... it left that to become a steakhouse in a corporate office park. read more

Service and quality are lacking while prices are exorbitant! It took at least 45 minutes after we finished app's for our entrees to be served and then we all sat waiting to eat for 3-4 minutes while they forgot to bring out one person's dish. My steak was cooked correctly but was served cold. Others in the party had their steaks either over or undercooked. We should have all sent them back for the price we paid but were all too hungry by that point. Water glasses were consistently empty. Dirty app plates sat on the table for way too long. Just overall very disappointing on multiple fronts for what was supposed to be a nice dinner. read more

It's where I take business clients for lunch or dinner, knowing the service and food will always be flawless. I was on training in glen allen and came across this steak house. I am not a steak eater but most of the time steak houses server good salmon and salads. So I went ahead and ordered myself a blackened salmon with mashed potatoes and some veggies. Salmon was perfect with good flavor and it came out well done as I wanted. Veggies were soft and moist and mashed potatoes were just the way I like. When back in town, I will be going to Hondo's again read more

****Update***So, a day later, I received a call from the Marketing Manger Toni. She was genuine and very professional. She took the time to listen so my concerns and really made me feel that my concerns were important. She was apologetic and assured this was not the standard that Hondos is known for. She even sent me a gift card which was gracious of her. You know, that is really all it takes, when you spend your money at an establishment you just want to know that when things go wrong as they sometimes do,that your concerns are not falling on deaf ears. This is a brunch only review: Went to brunch today to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had a table in a private room until they sat two tables later in our meal. I bet they loved sitting near the 10 of us just yapping away! First of all the $30 price tag seems a tad high. $20, sure maybe $25 but $30 is too much for what was offered. They also charge $3 for coffee which is high for a non-starbucks. One of our friends did not eat but she still charged her for the cup of coffee. Also, he implied coffee was included the way he offered it and OJ to our group. Mimosas were really good, though. The brunch spread had a variety of items, eggs Benedict ( but no scrambled eggs) bacon, sausage, grits the usual. There was an omelet station and prime rib. The waffles being freshly made were delish. The salad and desserts were good, but nothing was so stellar that I would rush back. Dinner is always good, so i think ill keep with that! read more

I had high expectations coming in for lunch today. The service was average but orders for the 3 of us took an hour and they didn't seem crazy busy. Perhaps the hostess apologizing for having only 1 menu was a bad sign. Anyway, I really wanted a filet sandwich but I didn't see that on the menu. The next best option seemed to be the prime rib sandwich. It was ok. The best part were the mushrooms. The fries were ok but too salty. Not sure if I will make time for an extended meal here anytime soon. My friends appeared to enjoy their meatloaf and bacon burger. read more

Great ambience! I'm a veggie but there's pasta and salad so I'm good! My dh and I have been coming here for almost eleven years, usually for an anniversary or birthday dinner but we've also had a couple New Year's dinners here. I love the salads...and before I was vegetarian, the steak and shrimp. The service is great, and there is a wide wine selection. Love the new location - cigar-odor-free! You can have a romantic dinner or come with a large group, or host a private event in the rooms available. But we've come most often for the bar area, when maybe we've been out somewhere else and want a nightcap or a yummy dessert (Love the one with pecans!). My fave is the dessert coffee, "Hondo's Millionaire." The bartenders are on their game, here, and you can watch some sports on TV, too. read more

Excellent steak! Need I say more? Well OK... The restaurant is kind of hidden next door to the Capitol Ale House in Innsbrook. The interior is kind of dark - classic steakhouse. Someone has compard it to a library room - I can see that. The service is perfect - attentive but not overwhelming. The wine list is very good - quite a few resonably priced (less than $100) selections - and a few true gems (if you want to spend the money). There is also a fair selection by the glass. The steaks (they have seafood and such as well but this is a STEAKHOUSE) are served with a salad - very nice ceaser-and choice of potato (not the norm for upper end steakhouses). The steaks themselves are nice cuts of USDA Prime. They are kissed with just a touch of better to bring out the good beefy flavor. Of course cooked just as we ordered them. Haven't tried the desserts but they did look pretty darn good... HIghly recommended! read more

I always get the Filet Mignon - usually I'm more adventurous about trying new things but here it's basically get the steak, get the cut you want, and you're done. My family has started going here for Thanksgiving brunch instead of making our own meal because this is so much better than anything we would make, and you lose the stress of preparing it yourself. read more

The place is beautiful. Elegant, classy, geat atmosphere for a date or business meeting. Service is excellent. The waiters are top notch, attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. Had caesar salad, not bad, with shavings of cheese added in the mix. Had hondo potatoes, the au gratin. Cheesy and rich, but a little dry. The mashed potatoes were alright, nothing extraordinary. Bread was good with sweet chef's butter. At the main event, the steaks failed. The rib eye and porterhouse were cooked to medium rare as requested. But there was no taste. Everyone at the table had the same observation. We tried adding salt and pepper, just got saltier. No beefy mineral tasteto enhance, or even a charred flavor to work with. Just nothing but a faint tinge of butter. Very disappointed. No way this is even close to aged steaks in any way. Choose another place for steaks. Since its a food review, lowest possible star. I came here for lunch with my co-workers for a holiday celebration so this review will just be about Hondo's lunch service. We had a table reservation and were seated right away when we arrived. At Hondo's you have two servers and they place a card with their names on the table for you. All the staff here are very attentive and the manager even stopped by once to ask us how the service was. They have a nice range of lunch menu items including some which are only $10 which makes this a nice but price friendly place to go. I had the Caesar salad to start and the sirloin cut filet with mashed garlic potatoes and veggies. The Caesar salad was pretty standard, but good. My steak was cooked exactly to how I ordered it. This is a huge plus considering I've had high end steakhouses in DC mess up my steak not just once but twice on the same visit before. My experience here would lead me to believe that their dinner service would be excellent and I would welcome a future chance to dine here. read more

Good quality food. THe place was not that busy when we arrived on a Friday evening. The wait staff were friendly and accomodating. The atmosphere is upscale, with very dim lighting, dark woods, and white tablecloths. Very old school upscale steakhouse. Be prepared to pay Ruth's Chris prices, though. This place isn't an Outback, and they don't pretend to be. Look for a new location of Hondos in the next few months, as they plan to move across the parking lot into an old Cartridge World building. read more

Came here with my family on Mother's Day. Although the steak I received was excellent (Cowboy Ribeye), it was visibly obvious that all the black patrons were seated in the back of the restaurant. My parents dined here before and also noticed the blatant segregation. This waour last time dining in this racist restaurant. Update: I am rather pleased that Hondo's chose to reply to my review albeit insinuating that it was for attention. How very business-like and professional of them. Nevertheless, if Hondo's is going to respond to my review they should respond to all of it not half. In my review I stated that that my parents dined here before our Mother's Day visit and also noticed the blatant segregation. Would Hondo's like to respond to that? In response to Hondo's sharing their method of reservation and seating for Mother's Day I would encourage them to do a lot of self reflection. If two parties of six were booked at the same time, they could indeed choose to seat the customers where they want and indeed enact their discrimination. In any case, it appears that Hondo's feel slighted by my review and instead of taking it as constructive criticism to ensure that it never happens again they instead want to wallow in their ignorance so I shall let them. And one last thing Hondo's, I will take you up on your offer of never returning. read more

Wow. We had a rehearsal dinner for our son's wedding at Hondo's recently and I can't say enough good about these folks and this place. The room was perfect--a richly-decorated library setting with crisp white table cloths and elegant place settings. We had maybe 35 people (same room would be perfect for a business luncheon or dinner meeting). The management and staff are thoroughly professional--well-organized and efficient--attentive but unobtrusive. The food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented (you can tell someone in the kitchen cares about what they're doing). Everyone raved about the meal, two of the folks who had steak (not a big steak guy myself) said it was the best steak they'd ever had. My wife and I went to Hondo's and had a great dinner last year but the true test of a place like this is whether they can deliver the same quality of experience on a larger scale. Hondo's can. Went here for a celebration dinner. Started with drinks. Waiter was less than attentive. The first beer was delivered quickly. Waited about 20 minutes before I finally had to ask him for another one and when that one came it was in a smaller 12 oz. glass. Waiter stated " they were out of mugs but this glass was almost the same size " Ask for our salmon with out glaze, however it was served with glaze. Side vegetables were less than impressive very thinly sliced with no flavor and like a child's size portion. Expected a lot more from such an upscale place. This was a horrible experience!! My family came to celebrate and we were greatly disappointed. My cousin's steak was sent back to the kitchen 3 times and it was still undercooked. Despite the bad food, the service was completely unacceptable. We were not given the tables and seating promised at our reservation. Staff members disrespected my family with their comments when they did not think we could hear. We would hate to think our being Black played a part in our treatment but we can think of nothing else. For the amount of money, the restaurant was not worth it. This will be the very last time we visit this establishment and they have no one to blame but themselves. read more

To be completely frank, I do not understand why this place has 4 stars. My husband and I took one of his colleagues to dinner last night and we were not impressed. The only decent part of the meal was the wine and french onion soup. Everything else was subpar and NOT worth 240 dollars. My husband said if he blind taste tested his steak and one from Outback, he would not be able to tell the difference. I got the crab cakes and let me say, I've been sick since 3 am. I only ate half of one. What if I ate both? If you want a quality steakhouse that's actually worth the money, go to Bookbinders in the city. read more
