Wanted to give a huge shout out and thank you to Hondo's for allowing us to have a nice celebration dinner with friends and family last night that ran a little later than we expected. Moreover, everyone in our party was extremely satisfied with the quality of service and food we received all around the table. The staff at Hondo's stayed cool about us arriving a little later than we hoped and let us stay past time to close in order to enjoy our dinner, all of which was delicious and well prepared. We never felt rushed or pressured to leave and for that I cannot thank y'all enough for the excellent wait service and meal which was provided. As a former server myself, I know how it felt having large parties stick around until after close, but thank you again for letting us stay a little late to close down the restaurant with you. All in all, this was a phenomenal dining experience and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves at Hondo's, we will definitely be back in the future for some more filet mignon! read more

In case my previous review could not have been more clear about the way this establishment does business, see Business Manager, Toni P.'s, response. I am not well versed in the etiquette of the food service industry (just a medical student here) but from what I understand it is standard practice to graciously accept negative feedback from a customer and offer a sincere apology. Well instead management at Hondo's felt the need to get on the defensive and make yet another feeble attempt to justify its actions. This place was an overpriced stuffy senior citizens joint.. We went there for a friends birthday. We were so excited to have dinner there, and enjoy each others company to celebrate. Management was discriminatory against one of the people in our party. How embarrassing!!! It pains me to write this review. Hondo's was one of my favorite "splurge" places to go for a long time, but in recent years (since the move to the new building) the quality of the food has been going downhill fast. My wife and I visited on Friday night for our anniversary; we had a coupon for a free entree because we're on the email list. It had been probably six months since our last visit, and this was our third straight unacceptable experience. My wife ordered the trout special. In retrospect, she should have changed her mind based on the less-than-enthusiastic response of our server. The trout itself was bland and lacked texture. It was served with risotto, which was too firm, in a mushroom sauce that tasted like campbell's condensed soup. It also featured asparagus, which was pencil-skinny, cheap grocery store asparagus cooked with no flavor. $40 for this entree? What am I missing? I had the prime rib, which lacked flavor and tenderness. On the plus side, I did enjoy my Hondo's potatoes and my caesar salad, which was very garlicky. Even with our coupon, our tab was still $85 including a bottle of cheap wine. That's really the issue here. In our last several trips to Hondo's, we've consistently had sub-standard food for the price. We've had overcooked steaks, veal chops covered in a thick sinew (twice), marginal-at-best fish "specials" (twice), and one service nightmare where our waitress disappeared when our food was delivered, not to return until she presented the bill. Hondo's menu hasn't changed in forever. They lack creativity. The only thing that used to make Hondo's worthwhile was that dining here was a great experience where you would be blown away by the high quality of the food. The atmosphere and decor are still excellent, and we normally get good service, but the quality of the food since their expansion to the new building is simply unacceptable for the price. read more

Yes it's late, but I gotta do this. I'm a simple eating guy. If we go out for a 'Steak dinner', considering we're paying for a baby sitter at $15/hr, I hope it's decent. Tonight, I don't know how it could of been better!! Perfect service thanks to Amie. My sweetie had two lobster tails ($60.00) that she absolutely raved about. Apparently, lobster tails are hard to do well but they did it well so that to me is a 'quit while you're ahead' situation. Ok, enough about her... my New York Strip (medium) with the fancy peppercorn sauce was yes I'll say it... 'beyond delish'... I must say, I'm young? (45) but I've never had a steak that "cuts like butter" nor do I ever want to have a piece of meat off an animal that... well.... cuts like butter...... bottom line, this steak was as tender as I can imagine and with the peppercorn sauce, this steak was sooooo damn good!! No excess fat and bone to deal with, just good old steak!! Please try the new location, if anything for a special ($175 without tip) night out!! read more

I went to Hondo's on Monday for a business dinner, which meant that I didn't have to pay for anything. Which was good because this place is pricey. Very, very pricey. The cost of beef is a lot of it, just because steaks are getting extremely expensive, especially the higher end ones. So if you're paying, maybe you should rethink this place. In terms of the food quality though, I thought it was very good. My group got a number of different dishes, and all the ones I saw were fairly impressive. The appetizers were tasty, and the crab cakes were definitely more crab than cake, which is a big plus. They bring you fresh loaves of bread for the table, and though for some reason I was the only one eating them, they were excellent. They aren't huge though, so I think that if you really liked the bread it might be in short supply with a larger group. The salads were good, and I really liked my caesar. The waiter even asked if I was interested in anchovies, which is a sign of a good caesar place, because that's what a true caesar would have on it. As for entrees, I got the filet and lobster tail. The filet was naturally very tender and well cooked, and I found it delicious. The lobster tail on the other hand was pretty tough, and there was a lot of cartilage left in it which made it very difficult to eat. I don't know if maybe it was my lack of experience with lobster or what, but I wouldn't go for that one again. One disappoint was the sides. I got the baked potato, and given that this place is pretty fancy I think I was expecting a similarly impressive side dish. However, what I got was literally just a baked potato on a side dish, and then the waiter comes and asks if you want chives, bacon, or sour cream. While the quality of all the add ons were pretty good (real bits of bacon and definitely heavy sour cream) when he just kind of plops them on your potato, compared to the excellent presentation of the other parts of the meal, its a bit jarring. I know many people don't want sour cream or bacon or whatever, but figure that out ahead of time, put the extra work in, and make that shit look good. When you're paying so much for dinner, presentation is a big part of it. Last came desserts, which were good but not really amazing. No huge pieces of cake at this place, but really just desserts that suit one person and that's all. Not that every place needs huge, multi person desserts, but if you can't share dessert, then whats the point? Getting fat on your own is no fun. Other than those complaints, the place was excellent. Service was very good and fairly fast, and they definitely were willing to do whatever you need to have a good time, save mixing the sour cream with the bacon ahead of time. My one last point would be that it gets REALLY dark inside. Like they turn down the lighting to the point where you can't see anything for five minutes until your eyes adjust. To make sure you can actually check the done-ness of your steak, the waiters carry flashlights. Maybe that's overdoing it, Hondos? Just my opinion. read more

Took my mother tonight for her birthday. Love the ambience of restaurant. I could not believe the wait time on getting a glass if wine. Then waiter (Trevor) drops the bottle off at our table without corking it and tells us he will be back. Meanwhile, he is taking other peoples orders while the bottle sits on out table. After 30 mins I call him over to open bottle. Who does this?? The wedge salad was a disappointment. Not crisp and no cold fork. Blue cheese was too sweet. Ruth Chris does it better. I had the cowboy ribeye bone in with blue cheese on top. Steak was amazing. Service was super disappointment. The wait staff did make over my birthday for her birthday quite Nicely--I really appreciate that. My wife summed it up best when we left Hondo's, "well, we can strike them off the list". I was very disappointed with my steak. I got the boneless ribeye and it had very little taste. Perhaps I should have gotten a bone in, but this was particularly bad. The fries were decent but nothing special. Mashed potatoes were good. My seafood soup was good but not great. The honey butter on the bread was the best thing. I would go back and give it another try but I will definitely get a steak-bone or ask for steak sauce. read more

Ate here for the first time this week. My other two favorite local steakhouses in Richmond are Buckheads and Bookbinders. Though my rockfish was frankly, not good, my daughters' chicken and salmon and my brother's ribeye were nicely prepared and flavorful. We also had a couple wonderful appetizers including a giant Madagascar shrimp and oysters on the half shell. Will definitely go back. One negative, I feel like they might want to break up the dining room a little bit more. It feels like a wide open room. Just my two cents read more

This is a really great steakhouse. I would put it in the going out for a celebration category though since it is definitely a bit pricier and caters to the dressier crowd. I got the Steak Hondo which is a filet mignon served on top of a portabello mushroom & topped with crabmeat, asparagus, and hollandaise ($43), it was awesome!! I got the Hondos potatoes as my side, they were a variation of scalloped potatoes and also yum. The service was excellent and they have you check each steak before they leave the table. The wine list seemed pretty good and I had a glass that went great with my filet. Will keep this place in mind for the next celebration that gets planned! read more

Disappointing. My sons UVA graduation was celebrated here. I've been before and was pleased but now the food was not as good. My in laws had tough prime ribs. They even asked for new knives. It didn't help. No one apologized for the tough meat. We selected because my son loves steaks. 5 of the 8 of us got steaks. Only 2 were satisfied. I had seafood trio. Ok. But at this level the seafood should be just as good as the steaks. Or the reputation of the steaks. I understand from locals this place has gone down. I see why. read more

Went on New Years Eve, had an early seating,have been there several times before. The atmosphere is very nice, clubby but can be very noisy if crowded. Steaks are very good, fish dishes only average. Seems very expensive for Richmond standards. Wine by the bottle priced nominally above when compared to other fine dining restaurants in town. The bar pours can only be described as 'frugal' and that would be a compliment! Overall I would rate it above average but not by a lot. To be clear regarding 'bar pours' I was referring to the hard liquor pours and not the wine pours, the wine pours per glass are quite satisfactory as Toni mentioned in his response to my post and thanks Toni for your prompt reply. read more

Hugely disappointed this evening by "fine dining " Hondo's. Even though Hondo's is a steakhouse and I am usually wary of ordering seafood, especially fish, at other than a good seafood restaurant, I figured Hondo's, with their reputation (and premium prices) would be okay so I ordered the "Chef's Fish", a Striped Bass with lump crabmeat and a lemon caper sauce. It was dry, way-overdone, tasteless, with an over- lemoned sauce and about a bare teaspoon of crab meat on top. To add insult to injury, my half-dozen half-shell oysters as an appetizer "Special" were not only served warm but two of the six were not even separated from the shells! Very rookie performance. I've been here a few times, this place is just OK. Steaks were drenched in butter and overly salty. Service was OK. The scratch sides I had were the best part of the meal (potatoes au gratin & salad). And my wallet gets crushed each time, when I could have spent a fraction of that elsewhere with better food. The management, John & Rob, are very accommodating & will make sure your experience exceeds your expectations. We started our meal with Calamari, Ahi Tuna, & Fried oysters, all perfectly prepared & full of flavor profiles. Our entree steaks, the Ribeye & Filet, were cooked & seasoned perfectly! Beware busy weeknights... My husband and I went in for my birthday on a Tuesday night. Once we got near the dining room we could hear nothing but loud talking...turns out there were several corporate events going on at once. It was so loud, we had to practically yell for our server, who was very nice, to hear us. To their credit, the waitstaff seemed so concerned about us being possibly forgotten in the fray that we had several stop by our table to ask if we needed anything, unfortunately, this had the effect of making us feel as though we were being rushed. My husband ordered the crab cakes (something he feels he needs to eat wherever he goes) and found them fine - if not great. However, my steak (which was meant to be a rare ribeye) came to the table 1. a NY strip and 2. medium verging on medium well. I sent it back and we waited for the refire which, while it was certainly rare enough when it arrived, was seared very hard on one side to the point of being burnt and not at all on the other (and still a NY strip and not a ribeye as I ordered). I ate a few bites but left most of it on my plate. When I got home, I took the steak to my own pans and finished it myself. All in all, not the best birthday experience. But most of the problems could have probably been solved by a less loud and frantic Tuesday night. I'm sure they know how to cook steak, but it just wasn't my night. read more

I was pleasantly surprised. The food was really good and cooked right. The shrimp cocktail wasn't that great. It was fresh - but the shrimps could have been bigger for what they were charging. When I objected, my son (his high school graduation celebration dinner) had to watch us all eat our meals and then they brought him an uncooked steak after we were all done eating. Manager assured me he'd talk to the owner and we'd hear from him the next day. That was weeks ago. Never heard from him.
